2 Galveston County Four Leaf Brief Page 2 Texas 4-H Opportunity Scholarships Deadline for Review: January 14 by 5 p.m. Galveston County Extension Office 4102-B Main St., La Marque If you are a graduating senior wishing to turn in the Texas 4-H Opportunity Scholarship, please note the various deadlines. The deadline above is an opportunity for you to turn in your application for review and edits. The sooner you turn it in the more time you will have to work on the scholarship if any changes need to be made. Deadline for Final Submission: January 28 by 5 p.m. Online through 4-H Connect NEW THIS YEAR!!! Each page of the application must be completed electronically, and then uploaded as a pdf during the online submission process on 4-H Connect. It is NOT necessary for you to print and mail in a paper copy of the application. Cards will be distributed to designated organizations in D9. Clubs can also distribute their cards locally to organizations of their choice, just make sure to Darla Cox the number of cards and where distributed, so we can turn in our community service numbers at Big Time in D9. County Updates Community Service Project Bottle Cap Collection Deadline : January 28, 2019 by 7 p.m. Galveston County 4-H will be participating in the 10 Benches Memorial Project. Sponsored by the Santa Fe Tribe Moms and the Santa Fe Strong Resiliency Center, this project consists of taking recycled bottle caps and turning them into benches for a memorial garden in Santa Fe. 3 Galveston County Four Leaf Brief Page 3 County Updates County Council Meeting When: January 28, 2019, 7:00 p.m. Galveston County Extension Office 4102-B Main Street, La Marque Join us for the next Galveston County 4-H Council meeting. Council is open to all Galveston County 4-H ers who are 12 years old or serve as club president or council delegate. Through County Council, 4-H ers plan and coordinate county involvement, develop leadership opportunities, and promote and encourage 4-H work. Remember to bring any bottle caps you may have collected for the 10 Benches Memorial Project. Mark your calendars for this year s schedule: March 25, 2019 May 20, 2019 TEEA 4-H Scholarship Deadline: February 15, 2019 by 5 p.m. County Extension office The Galveston County Texas Extension Education Association will be awarding a $400 scholarship to a graduating 4-H member. The award recipient of the county scholarship will be eligible to advance to the District 9 Texas Extension Education Scholarship level for the opportunity to receive a $1,000 scholarship. Fashion Storyboard New Categories Fashion Storyboard has two new categories this year. Home Décor: items that are easy to move and make a home visually appealing, examples of home décor include: throw pillows, table runner, or wall hanging. Home Furnishings: items that make a home comfortable for living or working in. 4 Galveston County Four Leaf Brief Page 4 County Updates Galveston County 4-H Roundup Deadline: February 14, 2019, Online Deadline for late entries with $10 fee per person: February 20, 2019 When: February 23, 2019, 8:30 am - 7:30 p.m. THIS WILL BE AN ALL DAY EVENT Galveston County Extension Office, 4102-B Main St., La Marque Members participating in any events listed below at District Roundup must participate at County Roundup Duds to Dazzle Teams of 3 to 5 receive textiles and each team has 60minutes to create a new product using items from the supply closet. Teams then present their item to judges. Educational Presentation Share your 4-H project experience by giving a presentation, by yourself or with up to four of your 4-H friends. Some categories available to present on are Beef, Food & Nutrition, Clothing & Textiles, and Shooting Sports, among other categories. Fashion Show This is designed for 4-H members to showcase their skills in buying and construction. You will create a clothing or fashion item, turn in paperwork explaining your item, complete an interview with a panel of judges, and last but not least, model the outfit on the runway. Fashion Storyboard This is an industry-inspired method of displaying original designs. The storyboard tells the story of the designer s idea. The storyboard includes original illustrations, flats, and more to promote the design. This year s theme is Once Upon a Storyboard, let children s literature be your inspiration. There are two new categories this year, Home Décor and Home Furnishings. Click here to find out more. All Storyboards must be turned in to the Extension Office by 5 p.m., February 14, Food Show Food Show provides 4-H contestants an opportunity to highlight their culinary skills while also improving their presentation and interview skills. This contest challenges members to create a dish using healthy ingredients in addition to learning in-depth information related their dish and its nutritional value. This year s theme is Restaurant Re-Creations. Public Speaking Interested in presenting on current events and issues? 4-H members have the opportunity to present a persuasive 5-7 minute speech. Unlike Educational Presentations, visual aids and props may not be used. Share the Fun With up to nine 4-H members, or individually, you can share-the-fun in one of several categories, including: Celebrate 4-H, Choreographed Routines, Dramedy, Musical/Instrumental, Poetry/Prose, Solo/ Band Performance, or Vocal.

Earn Points for your club! 1. Attend your club meeting every month 2. Participate in your club s community service projects 3. Attend County Council meetings 4. Turn in a record book 5. And more! Look for the logo! Every time you see the Game of Clovers Logo you ll know it s an approved Game of Clovers activity and you can earn points! Leaderboard There will be a leaderboard posted in the Extension Office so you can see where your club stands in the ranking. There is no fee, just fill out the information and upload two pictures. Any mixed breed or purebred dog over six months old by July 12 is eligible. 8 Galveston County Four Leaf Brief Page 8 State Updates Texas 4-H 2019 Beekeeping Essay Contest Deadline: February 3, 2019 Topic: Online via 4-H Connect Honey Varietals, State to State Each jar of honey reflects an unrepeatable combination of climate, soil, weather and flowers. Each state has unique honey varietals that beekeepers can market to their customers. Please identify one unique varietal to your state and discuss the flower s uniqueness and how beekeepers can effectively market that varietal. In your essay, please include a photo of the varietal s flower, an interview with a local beekeeper who collects this varietal and a recipe that highlights the varietal. The club also sponsored a game at the Galveston County Fair & Rodeo s Winterfest. Spot Light Galveston County 4-H Donates Toys Galveston County 4-H Clubs recently donated toys to Shriners Hospital for Children in Galveston. Shriners for Children in Galveston is a non-profit pediatric burn hospital, research, and teaching center located on the campus of the University of Texas Medical Branch. The hospital provides highly specialized acute, reconstructive and rehabilitative care for children with burns and other soft tissue conditions.
