5 In order to have good kickoff coverage, every member must be a hitter. This unit is the greatest test of courage in football. A. HUDDLE - Always huddle before the kickoff. 1. Takes place on the 30 yard line. The kicker will give call to break the huddle. Clap and sprint to your spot. Get into proper position and alignment NOW!! 2. It is imperative that you get the call on the type of kick we will use. 3. Kicker must always check with coach before breaking the huddle. B. ALIGNMENT 1. 1 and 10 align with your back foot on the line five yards behind the ball (on the 30 yard line). Take your alignment from the end man and form a half moon to the kicker. Be sure to see the kicker. Two-point stance facing the kicker hands on knees and 10 will be five yards in from the sideline and each succeeding man will take a five-yard spacing. 3. The kicker must always be in position between the ball and the goal line. You are the last line of defense. Keep the ball in front of you. You are the safety, but you must go to the ball. 4. #5 is designated to check everyone's alignment. Be certain we have 11 men on the field and MOTIVATE. Tell the kicker when the kickoff team is ready. 5. The kicker can sometimes move the ball to the hash marks to disrupt return assignments. C. COVERAGE 1. It is imperative that no one be off sides. 1 and 10 are responsible for reminding players on your side of the kicker to stay onsides. 2. Wait until the kicker passes you trail him by a yard. The kickoff team should hit the line as a unit. 3. As the ball is kicked SPRINT! SPRINT! SPRINT! Maintain spacing. Get to the 20 yard line before the ball carrier. 4. If the opponent attacks, you must avoid the blocker. You may leave your lane but you must return immediately. Do not get knocked down. If the ball carrier is 10 yards or closer, we must take the blocker on rather than avoid him. 5. Eyes! Eyes! You must have great peripheral vision. See/recognize what is happening and react with speed. 6. Do not get forced too wide apart or become bounced. Never follow your own color jersey. 7. We cannot pull up if a team "short drops" us. We must wiggle at full speed. Use arm over technique with fake or double fake. 8. As you get downfield within 10 yards of the return, come to balance and stay in front of a blocker. Use your hands and play off the blocker. Do not commit to either side of him. You must work laterally along the line like a defensive lineman. 9. As the ball carrier commits himself to your lane, throw off the blocker and MAKE THE TACKLE!! Helmet across his bow. Wrap him up hard as you hit through him. Keep your head up and hips over feet. 10. The first man downfield that outruns or evades the blockers must force the issue. Take a shot at the ball carrier. The others converge and gang tackle the ball carrier. Keep the ball coned. The more gang tackling, the more chance for a fumble and the less chance for a long return. CREATE TURNOVERS!! Keep the ball on the inside shoulder and in front (ISIF). 11. Outrun the cross blockers and 9 be alert for reverses and trick returns. Think of this every time. If the ball is kicked away from you, don't cross the hash until the ball has committed away from you. D. REMINDERS 1. Covering a kickoff is strictly desire and carrying on detailed responsibilities. 2. The kickoff is the best time to start convincing a team we are going to attack them from beginning to end. 3. It takes 4.2 seconds for the ball to be caught in the end zone and brought out to the goal line, and it takes 6.2 seconds to get to the 20 yard line. 4. The kickoff is a free ball. If the receiving team lets it roll, fall on it. It is OURS! If recovered in the end zone, it is a TOUCHDOWN!

6 5. Do not be offsides. This is unforgivable and is strictly carelessness. Getting the jump is not worth the risk. Not only are we penalized, but also we ruin a good kick and good field position. 6. Tackle through the numbers and GANG TACKLE. Do not ever let up and do not assume a runner is down until the whistle blows. 7. The fair catch rule applies on the kickoff. 8. You cannot advance a kickoff unless the receiving team has had possession of the ball. 9. The reason you are on the kickoff team is that you are one of the faster, tougher men on the team. SPRINT AND GANG TACKLE! 10. Following a separation technique, return to your lane and find the ball carrier. Rip around blocks to the side of the kick. 11. The kicker should concentrate on the ball. We will use 4 kick variations: Deep Middle, Deep Corner, Squib, and Pooch. 12. Safety If the ball carrier should break loose, do not give him two running lanes but force him to the sideline. 13. We want to tackle the ball carrier inside the 25 yardline or surrender no more than 18 yards/return. 13. DESIRE and PRIDE are the greatest assets a player can have in getting downfield to cover the kickoff and make the tackle. Speed, agility, aggressiveness, and pursuit are VITAL. E. AVOID THE BIG MISTAKES 1. Offsides. 2. Not sprinting. 3. Not running through the ball carrier. 4. Breaking down too soon. 5. Staying blocked. 6. Not returning to your lane. 7. Not keeping the ball on the inside shoulder. F. FUNDAMENTALS 1. Get Off time up. Must have great get off. 2. Landmark know what your job is. Stay in your lane. 3. Pad Level stay lower than the man blocking you! 4. Crossface when you cross a man s face, get a great rip and stay low. 5. Inside/In Front Keep leverage on the ball by keeping it inside you and in front of you. 6. Avoid as call and ball goes where designed. G. OUR MAJOR POINT OF EMPHASIS IN DEVELOPING OUR TEAM WILL BE 1. Kick placement 2. Get off 3. Speed 4. Adjustment to ball 5. Beat blocks 6. Close and tackle H. AFTER SAFETY; KICKOFF OR PUNT 1. Restraining line is now the 20 yardline. 2. Same coverage and alignment as kickoff but the ball can be punted or kicked off. Punter will approach slower. 3. Huddle takes place on the 20 yardline (normal). 4. Free ball after it goes 10 yards. 5. Do not be offsides. I. A good take off is essential to good coverage; you should be running full speed one yard behind the ball when it is kicked. The key to coverage is accelerating over the first 10 yards after the kick. Never slow down for a blocker.

7 Speed throughout the play. Keep good lateral relationship when you cover. Early in your coverage you may run around blocks; however, deep in your coverage you must take the blockers on. When you set within 10 yards of the ball, you must take blockers on. Go all out! We want to make our opponent start inside his 25 yard line. We greatly increase our possibilities of a subsequent score if we can make the opponent start on his 25 yard line or less. This is the most aggressive play in football. Trade 2 for 1 taking out a wedge. Never 1 for 1. Force turnovers on the kickoff. J. KICKOFF COVERAGE Inside the 30 We Succeed Inside the 25 Good Inside the 20 Excellent Inside the 15 Superior Inside the 10 Game Breaker
