1 The Galway Community of Practice (CoP) All about Athletics Session Overview Dynamic warm-up Running: Sprints Throwing: Javlin : High Jump Station Teaching Integration with Maths Facilitators: Ita Seoighe & Mags Nohilly
2 Dynamic Warm-Up ( rd -6 th class) Pulse raising activity: Jogging around the space, passing balls in transit - when not in possession, heels up to bum etc. Two-step: turning to face left and right Skipping - shake out hands and feet and change direction Stretching Phase: Straight Leg forward, bend rear leg and step to half-way line and jog across Lunge (straight trunk) with big stride and sink to half way, jog on Sumo: Legs shoulder width apart, down slowly and turn opp. direction Knee-up and grab to chest, alternating knees as step to halfway Roll heels to balls of feet, and take 0 tiny steps on balls of feet, and walk back Roll to heels, and take 0 tiny steps on heels. Swing arms forward/backwards together, brushing ears as you walk/jog across the hall. Core Movement Phase: Colour cone run Groups of 4 visiting particular coloured cones scattered over the space Individual walking/jogging - visit and count all cones of your colour, and compare answer! Jog now and step over each one of your colour Walk with group following leader ( snake walk ) Jogging in group with leader going to back on call Relay Square Groups of four with one at each corner of the square. They must pass the ball, shuttle run to the next corner and be back to their starting point before the ball has circled the grid to receive the ball and maintain the relay. 3 Multi-directional option is where the centre players mix their cones with the other lines and the ball must still be passed to their team mates (bibs could be worn to make it easier to locate them). Change centre players frequently to keep them on the move. Class: st 6 th Athletics Strand Unit: Understanding and appreciation of Athletics Mathematics Strand: Measures Class: 5th & 6th Athletics Strand Unit - Running Mathematics Strand: Measures,2,,4 One, two, three, four, (Skippers name) is at the cottage door. Five, six, seven, eight, Eating cherries off a plate. Measure an achievement i.e. record your speeds over a week/month and plot them on a graph. Analyse personal performance and that of others, (PBs). Use trundle wheel to mark out running lanes. Measure length of throws/height of jumps and compare. Interpret data on athletic achievement presented by another class or from the Olympics. How long would it take you to run to the end of the playground/pitch? Estimate what length the playground is? How can we check that? Estimate how long it would take you to run 00 metres. Ask a friend to time how long it takes you to run 00 metres. What is the difference between your estimate and the actual time? If you ran a kilometer at that speed, how long
4 would it take you? Could you run a kilometer in that time? Justify your answer.
