1 Big Lake Hornet Track & Field Citius, Altius, Fortius Swifter, Higher, Stronger It will be YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to understand the Minnesota State High School League, Big Lake High School Athletic Code, and the team policies. It is your duty to be familiar with these rules and ask questions if you don t understand. Team Policies Unexcused Absence: An unexcused absence is defined as an absence that does not have prior approval from your head coach or Activities Coordinator. To obtain coach s permission, you must talk to a coach before practice. Depending on the reason, the coach may then issue an excused absence. The penalty for an unexcused absence will result in the athlete being held out of the next meet. The athlete will still have to go to the meet and assist the team and coaches. Failure to do so will result in another unexcused absence. Absence the Day of a Meet/Practice: If absent on the day of a meet or practice for non-illness reasons such as a college visit or doctor s appointment, you will need a note from the Athletic Director to participate. If you are absent from school, unexcused to school, or leave during the day sick, you won t be allowed to practice or compete. If unsure, see Athletic Director BEFORE practice. 2 Practice: All athletes are expected to be dressed and ready to practice at 2:35 PM. Expect practice to last until 4:35 PM (given the fact that you are ready to begin on time). Most days, coaches will be available to work with athletes who desire additional technique and/or strength training after 4:35 PM. Please do not schedule other activities or work until after 5:00 PM on practice days! For all practice days, be prepared for outdoors & have legs, upper body & head coverings available - always! Coaches will enforce wearing these items to prevent injuries. Scholastic Standing: School work has priority over sports. You must follow the school academic policy and take care of those responsibilities outside of practice time. On rare occasions when academic make up must take place during practice time, prior coach s approval must be given. Traveling: An athlete must travel with the team to and from the meet. If extreme travel circumstances should pertain to you, you must attain prior written approval from the activities coordinator. If you must drive home with your parents, you will be required to sign out with your head coach. A student may never drive to/from a meet him/herself or with another student or adult. * Special note of emphasis to inform your parents: We have had some problems in the past with athletes asking to leave while the meet is in progress. While you or your parents may want to leave after you ve completed your events, please understand that you are out for a team sport. Teammates need to support each other, You ll need to wait until meet s end to go home if you have permission to leave with your parents. Failure to comply to this TEAM rule may result in sitting out a future meet. Respect/Sportsmanship Respect should be shown towards teammates, opponents, coaches, spectators, officials, and facilities regardless of the situation. The coaching staff will be honest in their dealings with you, and we expect the same in return. Be aware that many people will judge the entire Big Lake School District based on your actions during practice. Understand that many people from outside our community may judge Big Lake based on your actions at meets. Make sure your actions do not put Big Lake, your team and the school in a bad light. The coaching staff expects every athlete to obey the rules of competition. It is great to be competitive and want to win, but never at the expense of the rules or someone else s rights or feelings. Finish What You Start: Make a commitment to track and field. Do not quit on yourself or the team during the season. Though in most events track & field athletes compete individually, track & field is a team sport. You re needed during meets to score points. You are also needed in practice to push others, as they push you to get better. Equipment: Athletes are responsible for all equipment checked out to them. Tape measures, throwing implements, uniforms, and warm ups are just a few of the items that have been lost in the past. If you are responsible for an item and it is missing, you will need to reimburse the school for the loss. Please take care of your uniforms/equipment. 2

3 Injuries: with every sport, there is always the possibility of injury while participating in track and field. Although unlikely if proper procedure is followed, there is a chance that injury even life threatening ones - can occur. For your protection the following will be observed when dealing with an injury. All injuries, during practice/competition, must be reported immediately to a coach. Injuries that require medical attention will make it necessary for the athlete to bring written permission from a doctor to resume participation. Lettering Policy The following criteria will be used to award a letter in track and field. An athlete must earn at least 15 points. 1. As Points scored at varsity meets for the team. Athletes who compete Performance Standards in every varsity meet (10pts) 2. Perfect attendance (2pts) 3. Coaches retain the right to use discretion in awarding letters in certain situations (ex. athlete injury, meet/practice attendance issues, etc.) 3

5 Big Lake Track & Field Safety Guidelines The following guidelines need to be followed at all times to ensure your safety during participation in this sport. Ignoring these guidelines could lead to your removal from the team, injury, or possibly death. While running off of school grounds: run facing traffic (left side of the road) on the side of the road, off the road when traffic is coming run no more than two abreast yield to traffic, you will not win a confrontation with a vehicle do not run on people s property, stay on the road or sidewalk run only the designated route given by the coach, we need to know where you are run only in groups of two or more do not accept a ride from anyone while out on a run dress for the weather, make sure you have something for the upper body (sweatshirt) and lower body (sweatpants). Hat and gloves should also be kept in your locker all spring. If you are not dressed to coaches satisfaction you will not run and will be charged with an unexcused absence. While on the track: look both ways before crossing the track unless stated by the coach, bring a sweat suit to the track for your workout the inside lanes are for workouts, while people are working out, use lanes 4-8 when jogging around the track unless you re a jumper working on your event, stay off and out of the pits While in the weight room: observe the rules set forth by the weight room supervisor do only those lifts that are on your program and have received instruction on do not loiter in the weight room, it is a busy place in the spring While at track and field meets: make sure you are not late for the bus going to and from meets, DO NOT make the bus wait! know when your event starts and where to report support everyone on the team, get out of camp and cheer for the Hornets follow your warm up procedure prior to competing, sitting in camp is not warming up CUT HERE & RETURN TO YOUR HEAD COACH I have read the Big Lake Track & Field Rules, Expectations, and Safety Guidelines, and I agree to follow them.
