1 Saint Maron Maronite Catholic Church April 14-15, 2018 TABLE TALK John 13: The Apostle John says: When Judas the Iscariot had gone out, Jesus said to his disciples, Now the Son of Man has been glorified, and God has been glorified in him. If God has been glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself and will glorify him at once. Little children, I am with you only a little longer. You will look for me; and as I said to the Jews so now I say to you, Where I am going, you cannot come. I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another. Love is the greatest commandment ever given to mankind because it is through love that we are bound to God. We hear about the NEW COMMANDMENT that Jesus gives us. Jesus tells us I give you a New Commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. What does Jesus mean by new commandment? Aren t we told about loving God, loving thy neighbor, and honoring our mother and father in the Old Testament? These are part of the Ten Commandments. So what does Jesus mean by this? To understand this new commandment, we must look at the love Jesus had for His disciples. How did He love them? Jesus gave all He had for those He loved. There was nothing selfish about His love. All we need to do is to look at His disciples. There were no limits to His love. He loved them as He loves all of us--- so much so that He died on the cross for each of us. Most of us probably think that love should bring us nothing but happiness---isn t that what love is all about---to feel good and to be happy? For those of us who are older and wiser, we know that this is not the case. We know that with great love comes great pain. Jesus understood His disciples and with this understanding He still loved them. It is kind of like when a couple first starts dating and everything is perfect and he or she is the one of my dreams Then they marry and live together and all of a sudden they begin to see each other s weaknesses, their moods, their bad habits and irritabilities and they no longer see each other at their best. Jesus lived with His disciples- He knew who would betray Him, who would deny Him, and who would leave Him alone on His way to Golgotha. And yet with all of this knowledge Jesus continued to love them. Jesus showed us that we must love not for what we want people to be or what we imagine them to be but for what they are. 2 arguments with those we love or have been victims of insults, gossip, or unjust remarks? How much energy do we waste by ignoring those who hurt us or fighting with them, letting those events fester inside us only to destroy our spirit and our soul? Jesus taught us that in order for love to endure, it must be built on forgiveness or else love is nothing. No one ever said being a follower of Jesus would be an easy road. No one ever said that the teachings and lessons Jesus gives us would not be difficult. But what we have been told is that if we do take these teachings and these lessons and we make them our own, our reward will be with God. May we all strive for this love that Jesus speaks of today. May we practice this New Commandment of Love to others so that we will be afforded the joy that God will one day give to us. SPECIAL GUEST FROM ARCENCIEL USA "On April 22nd, right after Divine Liturgy, arcenciel USA an affiliate of arcenciel, a nonprofit based in Lebanon, will be presenting their student community service program happening this summer in Lebanon. The program is designed for US and Canada based high schoolers looking to do community service in Lebanon. If you're interested, please join carla and razan for this presentation in our Church Hall right after Divine Liturgy, on April 22. MYO NATIONAL RETREAT The National MYO Retreat will be held at Saint Joseph University, in Philadelphia, June 26-July 1, Registration forms will be ed to all MYO members and parents. I need to know by May 6, who will be attending this retreat. After Divine Liturgy on May 6, there will be a MANDATORY meeting for all MYO members, parents, and advisors that will be attending the retreat. BASEBALL TICKETS FOR THE PHILLY S I would like to thank Tony Baroudy for donating Philly s baseball tickets to our parish. His kindness will allow our youth and parents to attend two games. One game is for April 24, Tuesday evening at 7:05PM and April 25, Wednesday, at 7:05 PM. There are 20 to 26 tickets available. These will be given out on a first come first serve basis. David Fisher will have adult bible study and church history class on Thursday, April 19, 2018, from 7:00 PM 8:30 PM, at the Church hall. Your blessing father Brothers and Sisters: Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, a descendant of David that is my gospel, for which I suffer hardship, even to the point of being chained like a criminal. But the word of God is not chained. Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, so that they may also obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus, with eternal glory. The saying is sure: If we have died with him, we will also live with him; if we endure, we will also reign with him; if we deny him, he will also deny us; if we are faithless, he remains faithful for he cannot deny himself. 6 Gospel Reading Saint Luke 24:13-35 The Apostle Writes: Now on that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, and talking with each other about all these things that had happened. While they were talking and discussing, Jesus himself came near and went with them, but their eyes were kept from recognizing him. And he said to them, What are you discussing with each other while you walk along? They stood still, looking sad. Then one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answered him, Are you the only stranger in Jerusalem who does not know the things that have taken place there in these days? He asked them, What things? They replied, The things about Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, and how our chief priests and leaders handed him over to be condemned to death and crucified him. But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things took place. Moreover, some women of our group astounded us. They were at the tomb early this morning, and when they did not find his body there, they came back and told us that they had indeed seen a vision of angels who said that he was alive. Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said; but they did not see him. Then he said to them, Oh, how foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have declared! Was it not necessary that the Messiah should suffer these things and then enter into his glory? Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them the things about himself in all the scriptures. As they came near the village to which they were going, he walked ahead as if he were going on. But they urged him strongly, saying, Stay with us, because it is almost evening and the day is now nearly over. So he went in to stay with them. When he was at the table with them, he took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized him; and he vanished from their sight. They said to each other, Were not our hearts burning within us while he was talking to us on the road, while he was opening the scriptures to us? That same hour they got up and returned to Jerusalem; and they found the eleven and their companions gathered together. They were saying, The Lord has risen indeed, and he has appeared to Simon! Then they told what had happened on the road, and how he had been made known to them in the breaking of the bread. This is the truth.
