2 Hello, Welcome to another fantastic year at Sail Sand Point! I'm thrilled to introduce you to our 2019 camps and classes as we continue to bring the joy and life-enhancing benefits of sailing and small boats to people of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds. I could not be more excited to join this vibrant community of sailors and paddlers here on the North Shore of Magnuson Park! I come to Sail Sand Point from Salish Sea Expeditions, a non-profit sailing and marine science organization based in Puget Sound, and bring with me 22 years of experience in outdoor leadership, education, and non-profit management. I feel very fortunate to be able to continue my passion for inspiring others through outdoor adventures on the water while getting to know this flourishing community of boaters. Last year the Sail Sand Point community served over 15,000 participants across all of our programs. We look forward to another glorious year on the water, with new camps and classes, more group excursions, and dynamic new partnerships. As we strive to make the lake accessible for all, we thank all of our dedicated staff, hard-working volunteers, generous donors, enthusiastic participants, and wholly supportive community for their work in making our mission a reality. I look forward to an exciting first year here at Sail Sand Point and can t wait to see all of you on the water! 4 About Sail Sand Point Sail Sand Point is Seattle s Community Boating Center, a 501(c)3 nonprofit dedicated to bringing the joy and life-enhancing benefits of sailing and small boats to people of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds. Founded in 1998 with a fleet of donated boats and volunteer instructors, Sail Sand Point opened its doors in the retired naval base now known as Magnuson Park. In the 20 years since our humble beginnings, we've continued our mission to make sailing and paddling accessible for all. With 1,051 outreach participants, 458 hours of adaptive sailing, and $38,405 awarded in scholarships last year alone, Sail Sand Point strives to remove the barriers that have historically kept people on-shore. Our youth camps, adult classes, and open boating program are all designed to allow anyone to get out on this beautiful slice of lake we call home! As a community of boaters, Sail Sand Point is committed to fostering a welcoming environment where students feel empowered to learn and succeed both on and off the water. In every class, our instructors nurture self-confidence, cultivate leadership skills, and inspire an appreciation for our aquatic environment. This philosophy has made SSP and its staff national leaders in sailing education, recognized with the US Sailing awards for More Than 10 Years of Hallmark Performance, Excellence in Instruction, and Outstanding Program Director. Our programs do more than teach people how to sail, they help people discover a lifelong passion they can share with a flourishing community of sailors and paddlers! 4

5 Sail Sand Point s mission is to bring the joy and life-enhancing benefits of sailing and small boats to people of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds. Shipmates Designed to break down the traditional barriers to sailing and on-the-water recreation, our partner-based outreach program allows anyone to experience the sense of freedom, responsibility, and joy that comes from working together as shipmates to sail a boat. To learn more about Shipmates, visit page 22 or apply online for a day on the water! Community Engagement At Sail Sand Point community is everything. Volunteering Mission-Based Programs Adaptive Watersports We work hard to get people on the water regardless of any cognitive, physical, or emotional disabilities. Being on the water is a therapeutic practice that not only provides recreation, but offers a life-changing opportunity for healing, growth, and independence. Through partnerships with organizations like Outdoors for All and Seattle Parks & Recreation Specialized Programs we've developed specialty programs to promote the therapeutic benefits of adaptive watersports! STEM Education Working with US Sailing s STEM Education Initiative, Sail Sand Point has created kid-friendly, sailing-related science modules that can be incorporated into any of our regular programs. Our "Sailing Into STEM" camp (page 9) brings science to life using sailing and our aquatic environment to teach about physics, geography, and biology. Sail Sand Point thrives on the enthusiasm, time, and expertise donated by our volunteers. Volunteers help with maintenance, host events, and even help teach classes.
