1 Corinthian Sailing Association JibSheet November Page 1 November, Volume 14, Issue 4 US: $2.50 Official Newsletter of the Corinthian Sailing Association of Lake Pontchartrain THE GREAT LAKE RACE 2009 THE GREAT LAKE RACE 2009 was one of the wildest ever. Twenty miles, with wind from 0 to 27, and two squalls, one from the West and one from the Southeast. At the start there was no breeze. Boats with a 30 minute head start had not passed the "H" mark while the boats starting at the "A" mark attempted to start on port tack with other boats approaching the line on a starboard tack. Most of the boats eventually started. Finally the breeze filled in from the North. As the fleet sailed to the west the black rain clouds began to build. Rounded 2 marks almost zero visibility (thank you GPS!). Once the rain started and there was 15 knots of breeze, half the fleet dropped out. Big J did not finish because at the last mark they encountered "WILD THING" who had been knocked down and three crew were in the water. Wild Thing s crew was able to right the boat but the leftover chop had filled in to the gunnels and although they bailed mightily, they could not get the water out fast enough. Big J stood by for a few minutes and asked if they wanted a tow they said yes out of sheer exhaustion. They were grateful and bought a round at the bar later. 2 Corinthian Sailing Association JibSheet November Page 2 COMMODORE S CORNER One of the most important meetings of the year for the Corinthian Sailing Association is December 2. When we elect next years board members. So we hope to see each one of you there. At our last meeting we were shy a couple of members to make a quorum and hope to correct this at the next CSA general membership meeting with an amendment to the CSA By-Laws to be voted on.. Please take a few minutes and look over the proposal, along with the nominees for next years board found on page 7. We have successfully completed another Great Lake Race with all of its ups and downs. Even tried to fix the problems with the weather by moving the race to a later date in September. It proved you just can t fool with mother nature as we ended up with more of the same, very little wind; but we did have a few storms to push us along. WAIT UNTIL NEXT YEAR we will get that perfect wind yet! A big thanks to John Winters for his hard work on the Great Lake Race. Also a big thank you, to Bob Maher for being the committee boat and taking all those wonderful pictures. Official newsletter of the Corinthian Sailing Association of Lake Pontchartrain. 5 Corinthian Sailing Association JibSheet November Page 5 NORTH SHORE FLEET It was a beautiful fall day (at last) with striking contrast to conditions in recent races. Ten skippers showed up with small craft warnings and a wind forecast for 20 to 25 knots with gusts over 30. With the Causeway North Draw reporting only 16 knots, we proceeded with the race; but, by the time the first boats began to cross the starting line, the forecast began to materialize. We began downwind to J, and by the time the first boats had rounded and began the beat to L1, we had every bit of 20 to 25 knots along with the gusts of 30+. Everyone just hung on for the close reach back to M1 at hull speeds. Of the ten boats registered, there were eight finishers. Marcelena was unable to leave her slip due to an engine that would not start, and Night Wind had to abandon the race when her roller furling fouled 1. Esprit de Vie First overall, first in spinnaker 2. Merissa Second overall, first in non-spinnaker A 3. Ode to Joy Third overall, second in non-spinnaker A 4. As so often happens, a promising breeze began to die away as boats circled M1 awaiting their starting time. We proceeded to L1 under a slightly controlled drift; but as the fleet rounded L1 and began the beat to J, the wind began to cooperated a little more. The last leg was a wing and wing run home to M1, followed by a very enjoyable after-race get together at Pontchartrain Yacht Club. The order of finish was: 1. Jalapeno first in fleet and first in spinnaker 2. Esprit de Vie second in fleet and second in spinnaker 3. Jewel first in non-spinnaker B 4. Southern Comfort second in non-spinnaker B 5. Rhynie first in non-spinnaker A 6. Merissa second in non-spinnaker A 7. Desire third in non-spinnaker A 8. Fast Idle third in non-spinnaker B 9. Reivers 10. Celtic Girl 11. Summer Wind 12. Night Wind 13. Ode to Joy 14. Marcelena We had eight boats sign up for the single handed race: the course was M-J-L-M. At the start the wind was about 7-9 and right on the nose to J. There was a little shift during the second leg giving us a wing wing run to L and then a close reach to the finish. We got in about 1/2 hour before the rain and a light show. All told, it was a nice race with just enough wind to not take too much of a toll on the solo skippers. 1 Gerald Esprit de Vie 5 Brian Rhyme 2 Tom J-28 6 John Fast Idle 3 Charley Jewel 7 Jeff Night Wind 4 Lynn Merissa 8 Bill Ode to Joy

8 Corinthian Sailing Association JibSheet November Page 8 MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS CSA Board Meeting October 20, 2009 The meeting was called to order at 7:10 p.m. by Commodore Mike Floberg. Others in attendance were Dave Herrera, Bill Fields, Brian Keating, Dieter Hugel, John Winters, Charley Erickson and Henry Barousse. The minutes were dispensed with as there was no quorum at the last meeting. The treasurer s report was presented and accepted. New Business: John Winters discussed how we may get better participation in the Great Lake Race, particularly from the North Shore. Three North Shore boats participated this year others were registered by did not make the trip across the lake due to a poor weather forecast. More may have come if there had been assurance of docking. This will continue to be a problem until repairs to the harbor are complete. Consideration may be given to racing to the North Shore in alternate years as a means to stimulate interest from the north. Charley Erickson raised the issue of approving new members at a general membership meeting without a quorum as defined in the bylaws. Bill Fields contended that the applicable bylaw is ambiguous, requiring one fourth of the General Membership and two flag officers. He proposed that the bylaw be amended to replace the word and with the word including. It was so moved, seconded, and approved to be voted on at the next meeting of the General Membership. Charley Erickson proposed an amendment to the bylaw providing for the calling of special meetings of the Board of Directors. He proposed adding that the board must be notified at least 72 hours prior to the proposed meeting. It was so moved, seconded, and approved to be voted on at the next meeting of the General Membership. The non-spinnaker division in the GLR was won this year by a new member whose membership status was at least subject to question under a strict interpretation of the bylaws. While no remedial action was suggested for the subject case, it was agreed by all present that to be considered for a trophy in any race, a participant must have been a member in good standing at the time of the Notice of Race. This will be handled by a statement in the NOR. New Members: Clark Barton was approved as an Associate Member. Approved as General Members were Doug Dovie, Bill Weinbecker, Tim Fortney, Scot Hymel and Brian Wier. Old Business: Mike will check on progress with obtaining Corinthian window decals. Race Committee Dave Herrera reports that the BOTY race No. 3 will be rescheduled. Races No. 4 and 5 will be held on November 8 and 15, respectively. Wednesday, October 21 is the final Wednesday Night race of the season. Dave suggested positioning the starting line at the GLR so as to force a starboard tack approach, thereby avoiding some of the conflicts experienced this year. North Shore Report Henry Barousse reported that trophies had been awarded for the spring and summer series and would be awarded for a single-handed race held on September 5. The second race of the fall season had been held on Saturday, October 10, with winds up to 30 knots. The North Shore fleet will hold a meeting on November 7. The meeting was adjourned at 8:10 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Henry Barousse
