The Shiners big band sound was magnificent and Kathryn s cooking was out of this world. Charley Erickson was honored again for his support of the Corinthian Sailing Assoc. on the North shore. Charley is recovering from knee surgery but is getting along very well. I was hoping the City was getting the Municipal harbor construction under way this year, but! our wonderful New Orleans Saints are the ones who don t have to wait until next year. GEAUX SAINTS. WHO DAT. There is currently a special training class being held at PYC this February for those sailing off shore, which is not mandatory yet. This class is currently required in many countries around the world and may be required next year in the USA. I plan to attend and hope to learn allot and be able to share it with the club. I am very hopeful about this years Corinthian Races. I expect many more boats on the water as the season warms up. The reverse start triangle races are a hit with those that have sailed them. The CSA General Membership meeting February 24, :00PM at NOYC will have Benz Faget make a presentation about setting up your boat for the coming racing season Mike Floberg Official newsletter of the Corinthian Sailing Association of Lake Pontchartrain. 7 Corinthian Sailing Association JibSheet November Page 7 NORTH SHORE FLEET NEWS Well, as so often happens when weather causes the cautious to stay home, it was a knock-down gorgeous day with absolutely perfect conditions for sailing. Three Corinthians were in the area of the Old Oak Tree at 11 a.m. Summer Wind, Fast Idle, and Marcelena. While Marcelena did some troubleshooting with his engine starting system and waited for a crewmember to arrive, Fast Idle and Summer Wind proceeded out on the lake to test conditions. In a brief conversation on channel 68, it was decided to try a two boat race from M1 to L1 to J and back. Summer Wind and Fast Idle are rated very closely, and for the selected course, Summer Wind had an 18 second advantage. It was a broad reach to L1 with about 8 knots and, with her newly painted bottom, Fast Idle was soon moving up on Summer Wind s leeward (port) quarter. Summer Wind responded by pushing her down and held the lead around the first mark. The leg to J was a slightly closer reach on the other tack, and again Fast Idle began to move up. Again, Summer Wind held her off by pushing her down; but, as the wind began to fade, the cleaner bottom and the lighter air gave Fast Idle all she needed to take the lead. She rounded the J mark with about a 100 yard lead and began a beat back to M1 on a starboard tack. When Summer Wind settled in on her trim, however, she had Fast Idle well downwind of her and began to move up in the freshening breeze. Fast Idle tacked across Summer Wind s bow, while Summer Wind continued to push westward on the starboard tack. Each time Summer Wind was close to what seemed a good position to tack, she would get a good lift, and so continued to hold the starboard tack with Fast Idle now far inland of her and at least an equal distance behind. Finally, Summer Wind made her tack for M1, and, once trimmed tight on the port tack, was able to point well above the mark. Good, thinks the skipper put some windward in the bank because those lifts you were getting on the starboard tack will be throws on the port tack. But, as is characteristic of the skipper s nature, he became impatient and began to steer directly for the mark, easing his sails accordingly. Everything looked perfect until, with less than a quarter of a mile to go, the previously expected (but now forgotten) throw pushed him well below the mark and, eventually, below the stern of the victorious Fast Idle. It was a great race between two closely matched boats it was nose and nose all the way and one hell of a lot of fun. Congratulations to John Dixon and his crew on a masterfully sailed race. (I hope that this isn t too long-winded, but John said that he wanted to see a good write-up of how he kicked my ass.) Don t forget the Christmas Boat Parade next Saturday. Our next scheduled event is the first race of the 2010 winter series on January 16. We will be vigilant for an opportunity to make up the Starting School that had been scheduled for today. 8 Corinthian Sailing Association JibSheet November Page 8 MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS January 12, 2010 MINUTES The meeting was called to order at 7:06 p.m. by Commodore Mike Floberg. Others in attendance were Bill Fields, Brian Keating, Dieter Hugel, Kevin McCaffrey, Mark Phelan, Rob Grisoli and Henry Barousse. The minutes of the previous meeting were presented and accepted.the treasurer s report was presented and accepted. Membership Committee No new members since the last meeting Race Committee Rob Grisoli reported that schedules for all affiliated organizations, including GYA, SYC, and NOYC have been resolved. He will make necessary adjustments to the CSA schedule and submit to the board for review and approval. It was agreed to juxtapose the tentative dates for the CSA Single Handed Race and the Around the Lake Race in August so that the latter would have the advantage of the full moon. Rob volunteered to serve as chairman for the Great Lake Race in September. Old Business: Mike presented an updated estimate of the cost for the annual CSA birthday party. It was agreed to plan for 80 attendees (there were 67 last year) and the obligation for the costs was approved by the board. Rob observed that we still do not have race results for the fall series and are unable to establish winners for Boat of the Year. This is attributed to poor maintenance of the CSA web site. It was agreed that on the basis of participation, without regard to wins, the BOTY award would go to Jack Wise on Y Knot. Class winners will be established if and when official race results are known. It was resolved that maintenance of the CSA web site should be handed over to Rita Floberg. New Business: Dieter asked for and the board approved expenditures to renew liability insurance and to pay dues to the GYA and to US Sailing. Business was concluded with a Champaign toast to the New Year and to the new board of directors. The meeting was adjourned at 8:20 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Henry Barousse A GOOD CAPTIAN SAILS OVER THE HORIZON. It is with deep regret I learned that Edward Ordemann, the first Corinthian Commodore passed away on February 11, Edward Meriwether Ordemann ORDEMANN Edward Meriwether Ordemann, age 60, was called to join our Lord on Thursday, February 11, Beloved husband of Susan Hicks Ordemann and devoted father of Kelly, Kaitlin and Eddie Ordemann. He is preceded in death by his mother, Betty Meriwether Morgan, and his stepfather, Jesse B. Morgan. He is survived and will be deeply missed by his father, Marshall F. Ordemann and stepmother Susan, brother Marshall F. Ordemann, Jr., his twin sister, Betsy Ordemann, sister Kathy Harris and her husband Peter, stepbrother Jesse Morgan and stepsister Vicki Morgan. He will also be missed by many nephews and nieces. Ed achieved recognized success in sales as Regional Manager for Siemens Information Systems and retired to pursue investment interests, sailing, photography, woodworking and his greatest joy, his children. He rarely missed a game, a performance or any opportunity to admire and encourage his children, and yours. Ed was a man of many talents and skills who enjoyed working with mechanical, electrical and structural challenges. He understood engineering and could build anything. He was a life-long sailor, having won many awards as a racer on Lake Pontchartrain and served as Commodore of the Corinthian Sailing Association. As a student, Ed excelled in varsity sports, particularly football and basketball, and was noted for his skills in trick water skiing. Ed was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church. He attended St. Martins Episcopal School and graduated from Sam Barthe School and Loyola University. He was a member of the Southern Yacht Club, the Corinthians Sailing Association, the Over the Mountain Athletic Club, and many carnival and business organizations. He will be joyfully remembered for his love of music, dancing and particularly for his genuine smile that brought warmth and kindness to the lives of everyone he encountered. A memorial service will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church on Thursday, February 18th at 1 p.m. Visitation will commence at 11 a.m. at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Trinity Episcopal Church, Trinity Episcopal School, Metairie Park Country Day School or Isidore Newman School. From Times-Picayune
