1 Propeller and Sail Ketchikan Yacht Club Newsletter February 2003 Current Soundings Congratulations and good luck to Diane Hovden on her semi-retirement. I understand that she is enjoying it for a few moments with a move to Craig, and down south to visit family. Congratulations to Saunya and Alan Alloway named Chamber of Commerce Entrepreneurs of the Year for Island Electronics, Wind, Wave and Water Charters. Bravo to Deb Davis, for her nomination as Nurse of the Year! The membership agreed last meeting to hold the Commodore s Ball in the fall with the Racing Committee Awards Banquet. NEXT KYC MEETING WILL BE March 4 Potluck at 6 pm Meeting at 7:30 p.m. See Rear Commodore s article See Commodore s Comments on Page 2 for info on: Commodore s Ball and BIG P Project Up Date FROM THE REAR COMMODORE: IT S FAT TUESDAY The theme for the March Yacht Club Meeting will be Mardi Gras. Our meeting date falls on Mardi Gras so we will therefore celebrate! At the February meeting, several members said they didn't know what Mardi Gras was or how to celebrate it. The following is a SHORT explanation of Mardi Gras. Mardi Gras means Fat Tuesday. It is the day before Lent starts on Ash Wednesday. Lent is forty days of fasting, alms giving, and prayer leading up to the Easter Celebrations. Since everyone had to refrain from eating meat or goodies of any kind for forty days, the day before the fast became a day of excess. The day has been expanded over the years into a season of excess, dancing, parades, costume balls, theatrics, and amusements of all kinds. (cont on page 2)

2 Page 2 Commodore s Comments By Al Rockwood We had an interesting meeting on Tuesday night with a good program presented by Judith, our Rear Commodore. At our monthly Member's meeting on the first Tuesday of each month we will try to keep the business portion concise, organized and as short as possible. This will leave more time for interesting and enjoyable programs. If there is an item of business that you want to bring before the club, please contact any Trustee to have it placed on the agenda. The BIGP project is still on hold pending the negotiation between the City of Ketchikan and the Department of Fish and Game. The next meeting is scheduled for March 3 at the Ketchikan City Hall. We will try to have a few members there. Roger Maynard will continue to coordinate this process so please give him a call if you have concerns about this process or can attend the meeting. Continued contact with city council members would also be helpful. The clubhouse and float are looking good, but we always have a few tasks that need to be done from time to time. Vice Commodore George Porter will coordinate these activities and several people have volunteered to clean and paint the shower, pressure wash the decks and floats around the club house, and prepare the office for painting. Later in the spring we will have outside cleanup and painting and some light gardening. Please call George when you have a few minutes to help around the facilities. The Commodore's Ball will be scheduled in the fall this year in conjunction with the annual awards banquet. It will be held during the first part of November. With the lack of a spring social event, we have decided to have a gathering at the club house on the week-end prior to Celebration of the Seas. We will have more information on these events next month. FAT Tuesday con t The March Yacht Club meeting celebration will focus on food and music. Costumes are encouraged and we will have some entertainment maybe even some dancing If anyone wants ideas for Cajun food, the Public Library has: JUSTIN WILSON'S HOMEGROWN LOUISIANA COOKIN. CRAIG CLAIBORNE'S SOUTHERN COOKING. CHEF PAUL PRUDHOMME'S LOUISIANA TASTES: EXCITING FLAVORS FROM THE STATE THAT COOKS. THE LOUISIANA NEW GARDE. Carnival, another version of Mardi Gras, is also celebrated all over the Caribbean and South America, so food from those cultures is welcome too. Hope to see everyone at the celebration! Judith

3 Page ALASKA KADEY-KROGEN RENDEZVOUS THE NORTHWEST KADEY- KROGEN OWNERS WILL HOLD THEIR 7TH ANNUAL ALASKA RENDEZVOUS AUGUST 12 THROUGH THIS YEAR S EVENT WILL ENTAIL A TRAVELING EVENT STARTING IN KETCHIKAN AND GOING NORTH AROUND THE BEHM CANAL. IT WILL END UP IN KAH SHAKES COVE. THE SOUTH BOUND BOATS WILL THEN BE DEPARTING FOR POINTS SOUTH. THE FOCUS OF THE TRIP WILL BE SIGHT SEEING, CRABBING, FISHING, VISITING, EATING AND DRINKING (NOT NECESSARILY IN THAT ORDER). THERE HAVE BEEN A DOZEN "LOWER 48" AND CANADIAN KROGEN BOATS WHO HAVE MADE COMMITMENTS TO TRAVEL TO ALASKA THIS SUMMER. SOME OF THE OWNERS ARE MAKING THEIR FIRST TRIP TO ALASKA AND MANY ARE RETURNING VETERANS. THEY INCLUDE A 54 FOOTER, ONE 48, SEVERAL 42 FOOTERS, AND TWO 39 FOOT BOATS (SOME DAY WE HOPE TO GET OUR ONE 38 FOOT KROGEN SAILBOAT UP HERE FOR YOU SAILORS TO COMMISERATE WITH). WITH KETCHIKAN BEING THEIR FIRST STOP UPON ARRIVAL IN ALASKA AND THE BEGINNING OF THE RENDEZVOUS, WE EXPECT KYC MEMBERS WILL BE SEEING THEIR SHARE OF KADEY-KROGEN TRAWLERS THIS SUMMER. WE WILL BE REMINDING OUR KROGENOWNERS THAT THEY ARE WELCOME AT KYC IF MOORAGE IS AVAILABLE. (AND THEY BEHAVE THEMSELVES). HAVING FOUR OF THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST S 70 KADEY- KROGEN TRAWLERS HOME PORTED IN KETCHIKAN AND THEIR OWNERS BEING MEMBERS OF THE KETCHIKAN YACHT CLUB IS A UNIQUE EXAMPLE OF EXTREME GOOD TASTE AND SUPERIOR JUDGEMENT. THESE ARE TRAITS THAT ARE COMMON WITH THE KROGEN OWNERS...WELL... OK, OK...SOME OF US ANYWAY. WE AGAIN ARE ENCOURAGING ANY KYC MEMBERS TO JOIN US IN OUR CIRCUMNAVIGATION OF THE BEHM AND IF YOU ARE NOT ABLE TO MAKE THE ENTIRE TRIP, PERHAPS YOU CAN JOIN US IN KAH SHAKES COVE ON THE 15/16 OF AUGUST.
