6 Commodore s Corner Aloha and Happy Lei Day! As I m sure you kama ainas know, May Day is Lei Day in Hawai`i. It s also the beginning of a fun song we sang in elementary school. I attended Lanikai Elementary on the windward side of O`ahu, where we danced around a decorated tether ball pole on Lei Day. Such good memories the 60s treated me very well. It was while living in Lanikai that I caught the sailing bug at the age of 7. We had a fiberglass El Toro that was so easy to rig and launch off the beach. I would sail that puppy out to the Mokulua Islands and bask in the sun after landing on the larger of the twin islands. Think I ll go back and repeat that fun adventure! Speaking of adventures what a great time Fast Company guys had competing for the Lipton Cup! I don t want to repeat what may already be written in this newsletter, but it s fair to say they have us inspired to join them next year. Thank you Jim Saylor for leading the way, and thanks also to the Fast Company crew and to Charlotte Ross for capturing such wonderful action photos during the race. Be sure to visit our website for all the photos and other fun activities coming our www. nawiliwiliyachtclub.org/ Please mark your calendars for the Spring General Membership Meeting for Saturday, May 13, We need a strong turnout from the membership. Remember that dinner is provided by the Board all you can eat! The bar will be open and the floor will be yours for the evening. Please come and share your input on things that are good, and things that you d like to see changed. There are few changes to the By Laws that need your vote. Hope to see you there! Lease Renewal Update As you know from last month s newsletter, NYC is now on a month-to-month lease until September 1, In response to our meeting with DLNR in late February on O`ahu, NYC received a formal letter from DLNR inviting us to submit an application for state lands as a non-profit 501(c)(3) and by-pass the public auction process. This opens the door for direct negotiations with DLNR and lower rental fees. As a result, board members from both NYC and KSA created a special hybrid Lease Committee to forge the way. Unfortunately, NYC is a nonprofit 501(c)(4), and as such would not qualify for this special opportunity. With little time to respond, the committee requested that KSA, who DOES qualify as a non-profit 501(c)(3), take the lead. Fortunately, our DLNR property manager in Honolulu is receptive to our intent. So, we will proceed with diligence, and carefully produce our application before the May 24, 2017 deadline. Mahalo, Commodore Fred Styer Racing News Hawai`i Life Flight The open enrollment ended on April 3 rd for the group discount from Hawaii Life Flight insurance. New Members and existing members can take advantage of this discount next year in March when there will be another open enrollment period. Thanks again for NYC members Shaun Lehman and Janice Portillo for making this possible! Offshore Race #2 Skippers Choice The weather conditions were perfect for the second Skippers Choice Offshore Race on Saturday, April 8. With 10 knots of trade winds and sunny skies overhead, the skippers agreed to race out to the Z buoy and back. The start area had Bonjolea II, Speedy, Trinity, and Fast Company, along with the canoes from the local canoe club, enjoying a day on the water. The self-start race began promptly at 10 am with the boats leaving the harbor on a broad reach to the buoy 5.5 nm away. Fast Company broke away from the group to practice for the upcoming Lipton Cup. Speedy set her spinnaker while Trinity

7 and Bonjolea II sailed conservatively due to the absence of regular crew members. The boats rounded the fish aggregator buoy as fishermen looked on wondering why everyone was in such a hurry. The reach back had Bonjolea II in the lead finishing 70 seconds ahead (1:49:50 corr.) of Speedy (1:51:00 corr.). Trinity finished third with a corrected time of 1:59:32. Skippers Choice Offshore Race #2 Results v PHRF Open 1 st Place Bonjolea II 2 nd Place Speedy 3 rd Place Trinity v Club Open 1 st Place Speedy 2 nd Place Trinity 3 rd Place Bonjolea II Lipton Challenge Cup One Fast Company skipper Jim Saylor and crewmembers Bruce Raymond, Thor Temne, John Ross, Colby Curtis, and Kevin Arndt were in Honolulu during the April 22th weekend participating in the 2017 Lipton Cup. They warmed up by competing in the Hawai`i YC Friday Night Beer Can Race that featured a staggered start and a race out to the Diamond Head buoy and back. The race had a large fleet, and we walked away with second place (and a credit of two pitchers of beer at the HYC bar, not yet collected on.) The Lipton Cup started on Saturday with the race course off of Waikiki Beach. The conditions had gusty, shifty winds which presented a challenge to the four boat fleet. The defending champion, Waikiki Yacht Club s Humboldt 30 High Tension was the boat to beat, but after gear failure that sent two crewmembers overboard on the first leg of the first race, it became apparent that there was going to be a change in venue for the trophy cup. Along with bringing their best crew and gear, they must have brought a shipping box with them because Kane`ohe Yacht Club s Hobie 33 Yellow Dragon sailed a flawless regatta scoring four first place bullets and elected to retire for the fifth race. During one of the races, as if to surrender the cup and concede defeat, High Tension mistakenly hoisted up their chute sideways. This secured KYC s victory and essentially put the postage on the trophy s shipping box. Fast Company performed well, and it was heard from the spectator boats that our impressive teamwork was a force to be reckoned with! The crew of Fast Company was honored by the hospitality of WYC, the efforts of the Race Committee, and the comradery of racing amongst the best crews that Hawai`i has to offer Lipton Cup 1 st Place KYC Yellow Dragon, Hobie 33, 9 pts. 2 nd Place HYC Mayhem, Hobie 33, 11 pts. 3 rd Place WYC High Tension, Humboldt 30, 13pts. 4 th Place NYC Fast Company, Olson 30, 18 pts. 9 Louis Abrams Memorial Rum Tequila Race Series At the time of this article, we have completed the third race of the six race series. The racing has been competitive and will only become more competitive as some boats have new crew members learning the ropes. These are the fleet points at mid-series with one throw-out. To qualify, each boat must have a junior (age 8 thru 18) on board and wearing an approved USCG PFD while underway. Please pass the word to your young crew that the club will be offering a more youngster friendly and affordable menu for the after-race dinner. The dinner for the first race will be your choice of a large hotdog or hamburger, bag of chips, cup of baked beans, and a chocolate sundae ice cream bar all for $8! If we have a good turnout we are planning to have a pizza night, a taco night, and a spaghetti night. Pass the word! Offshore Race Series ~Hanalei Race~ Memorial Day Weekend will be the Offshore Race! Saturday, May 27 th at 0900 at Nawiliwili Harbour will be the self-start for the race up to Hanalei Bay. We will be having a BBQ at the Pavilion between 2 and 8 pm. Master Chef Kevin Arndt will be cooking up your choice of either a complimentary hotdog or hamburger for your enjoyment. If that s not appetizing enough, bring something to grill. Bring a side dish to share! Utensils, plates, cups napkins, and cold drinks (for a small donation) will be available. The return race to Nawiliwili will be on Monday, May 29 with a self-start at Kaua`i Channel Race August 4 th The word on the docks, be it here on Kaua`i or on the other islands, is that we can expect a large number of racers this year! I ve gotten feedback from past participants that the hospitality that the racers receive from Nawiliwili Yacht Club is second to none. It s the volunteers that have helped out on the race make it a success, and that success grows each year. We need volunteers for the 2017 KCR: v Set up on Thursday August 3 rd v Boat Greeters on the evening of the race August 4 th v Snack Bar Servers/Cashiers on the evening of the race August 4 th v Dinner Entrée Servers/Cashiers on the evening of the Race Awards Ceremony August 5 th v Drink Ticket Sales for both evenings August 4 th & 5 th v Clean-up on Sunday August 6 th We also have received generous sponsorships from Koloa Rum Company, Sierra Nevada Beer, Menehune Water Company, and Amaize Catering. If you would like to sponsor the event in any way, we offer different levels of sponsorships and benefits starting as low as $100. Contact VC Kevin Arndt at ksarndt@live. com for further information on sponsorship or volunteering.
