3 Commodore s Corner Halloween Costume Race Party! Big Shout Out to Chris Jordan and the OZone Crew for a fabulous Halloween Party! For those who missed out looks like you ll have to read about it on our web site and newsletter. The dinner was one of the best this year at just $15! Our Vice Commodore Kevin Arndt announced winners of best costume categories, who were blessed with Koloa Rum and Le Crème Chardonnay! Great music and dancing followed with OZone s Mafia Family leading the way. Thanks to all who made this party a great success! Race Awards Party Saturday, November 2, to 8 pm We are asking each boat to bring two (each serving 20) heavy pupu platters to share. Of course, all families are welcome! During our cocktail & pupu hour (6 to 7 pm) we will be showing a slide show from the entire season! Come join us to cheer on our 2017 race competitors. Fall General Membership Meeting Saturday, November 11, :30 to 8 pm This is your chance as a club member to share your voice, share your concerns, and ideas for improvement! Brief officer and committee updates will be presented. Floor nominations with discussion and voting for 2018 officers, budget, and dues will also be on the evening s agenda. This will be a pot luck dinner: please bring something to share. Cocktails 5:30 to 6 pm Dinner 6 to 7 pm Meeting 7 to 8 pm 50/50 Drawing & $314 Progressive Pot. Must be present to win! Christmas in Monte Carlo Party Saturday, December 9, to 10 pm Get ready to have a fun night of games at the NYC Christmas in Monte Carlo Party. Party tickets will include a bag of chips for your entertainment at the game tables: at the end of the night you will turn your chips in for raffle tickets that will be pulled for prize winners! Lease Renewal Update MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) If you ve followed our journey so far, you ll know that we had a very successful meeting with the Land Board in August. I wish you could have been there when Shale Shore, Astrid Andersson, and Lily Flynn stole the hearts of all seven Department of Land & Natural Resources (DLNR) members who agreed that our NYC-KSA `ohana was pretty special and worthy of direct negotiations. As a result, we bypass public auction of the clubhouse underlying property. Our hybrid lease committee is now busy writing the articles of agreement that will soon evolve into a Memorandum of Understanding, which the DLNR Board requires before special consideration is released. By mid-summer, we expect to meet again with the DLNR Board to present our MOU and move forward with a long-term 30-year lease. Once in place, we will continue our plans for a new kitchen and many other amazing additions and renovations to the club. May I say a special MAHALO to KSA for their unwavering support! A hui hou, Commodore Fred Styer Racing News Offshore Race Series October 7 th was the last Offshore Race Series Skippers Choice. Speedy and Bonjolea II enjoyed excellent racing conditions when they raced up to Hanamā`ula Bay and back. The purpose of the event was for sailors and NYC members to bring a friend or family member to experience dinghy sailing for the first time. Following the first time sail, there was a race. A total of ten boats were on the water, including two lasers and a 420. The ten dinghies and two of our coach boats were on the water to greet Hiroshi Konno, who sailed his 30 foot boat Charco from Japan to San Franciso in 52 days. He is on his way home and stopped in Nawiliwili (I think he heard we were having a community sail)! The event was such a success, we plan to run one every month, so bring a friend and come down for a sail. Mahalo to the wonderful people who helped with set up, take down, and offering rides to new sailors! 6 KCC Physics of Sailing: The students of Steve Taylor s physics class were treated to a unit on the physics of sailing. The unit begins with classroom theory and ends with a real life demo where all the students are given the chance to try out their knowledge in a real life scenario! ANSWER TO QUIZ 44 Boat PW is penalized for breaking rule 20.2(c), Room to Tack at an Obstruction: Responding. S is an obstruction to PL and PW because they both need to keep clear of S (see the definition Obstruction). Rule 19.2(a), Room to Pass an Obstruction: Giving Room at an Obstruction, states, A right-of-way boat may choose to pass an obstruction on either side. Rule 20 applies because safety requires the leward boat (PL) to make a substantial course change to avoid an obstruction (S) and permits PL (the right-of-way boat) to tack if she so chooses. It is immaterial which boat hails first. Rule 20.1, Hailing, specifically permits PL to hail PW for room to tack at the obstruction; and rule 20.2(c) requires PW to respond in one of two ways (either tack or reply You tack ). PW does neither and thereby breaks rule 20.2(c). (See US Sailing Appeal 24.) Answers to Dave Perry s 100 Best Racing Rules Quizzes are based on The Racing Rules of Sailing for For a comprehensive explanation of the rules, read Dave Perry s Understanding the Racing Rules of Sailing through 2016, which is available from US Sailing: 1 (800) or Permission to reprint this quiz for non-commercial use is granted by the author. Steve Taylor (in the epically blowing sideways hat with the chin strap) leads the KCC Physics of sailing troops on a windy harbour adventure! Quiz 44 Boats PW and PL, two close-hauled port-tackboats, are half a length apart and approaching Boat S, a close-hauled starboard-tack boat. If PL and S hold their courses PL will hit S a few feet back from her bow. PW hails PL for room to pass astern of S. PL then hails PW for room to tack at S. PW does not respond and begins bearing away to pass astern of S. PL bears away also to avoid a collision and protests PW. In the hearing PW defends her actions by saying that she hailed first. You are on the protest committee; how would you decide this? 8 Robert (Bob) Clark aka Bebob 12/30/1938 ~ 11/19/2016 For Sale It is with great sadness that we report the death of NYC Lifetime Member Bob Clark. Bob (aka Bebop) joined the NYC when he and his wife Roz were visiting back when the club was offering $1,000 lifetime memberships to raise money to build our clubhouse. A resident of Northern California, Bob and his wife Rosalind Sabella Clark had three children and seven grand children. Bob was a drummer by trade and was part of Bop City. He toured with the Diamonds and had gigs at the Fillmore, the Playboy Club, and on the ships Lurline and Mariposa. He was the West Coast manager for Sonor Drums and Baldwin Piano. Bob was the founder of Duxbury Productions. The Duxbury Trio was the house band at Sabella s of Marin. Bob and Roz cruised their boat Hanalei Moon on San Francisco Bay. They moved to Kaua`i in early 2000, bought a home in Princeville, and brought their passions together opening Sabella s in Princeville featuring Italian, Island Seafood, Music, and Art. Bob Clark and our own Tony LeHoven found each other at the Hanalei Bay Resort where locals gathered to enjoy great music back then. This friendship brought Bob to us at NYC, and he was a very generous benefactor. When they decided to close Sabella and return to Northern California, they donated many commercial restaurant appliances to NYC including a two door SS fridge, commercial convection oven, and freezer. Many served us well in our early years but are no longer with us. What IS with us are the two giant wharf bollards that flank the chained drive into the clubhouse property. Whenever you gaze upon those bollards when you come to the clubhouse, please remember this beloved NYC Lifetime Member who donated them to us.
