Articles, classifieds, and event ads can be ed (as an attached WORD document please) to docktalk@stocktonsc.org or sgregor@pacbell.net. The editor reserves the right to edit, or exclude anything submitted. All articles and stories must be signed. Thank you for any inconvenience it may have caused you with all the confusion, congestion and kids. A special thank you to all those who let us move your boat from A Dock. I have some cookies for you! I received numerous compliments on our club facilities and how helpful and nice most SSC members are. Now we can get back to a somewhat more peaceful routine and enjoy the rest of the summer. Thank you to everyone who helped me with camp in the absence of Bruce. 3 Commodores Comments The final party of the Delta Doo Dah sponsored by Latitude 38 was a huge success. Everyone agreed that their stay at our club was one of the highlights of the cruise. John Moyer, Reggie Stone and crew did a terrific job of accommodating all of the boats in our harbor. A big THANKS to all of the volunteers for making this event so much fun. Way to go SSC! I ve heard rumors that Latitude 38 is already planning next years Delta Doo Dah to include SSC. This years sailing camp sponsored by SSC, Richmond YC and Santa Cruz YC was one of the best ever. All of the kids had a wonderful time learning valuable lessons not only about sailing techniques but also about friendships. I know that we are a little inconvenienced each year when the camp comes here but I also know that these kids are the future of sailing and their passion for sailing will be with them forever. I would like to thank all the clubs, parents and volunteers involved for supporting this program. Good Stuff!! The dredging committee has awarded the contract for the core samples to be taken. The samples will be tested for different contaminates and we re all confident that this testing will show very little contamination in our harbor. Although it takes only a couple of days to drill and collect the samples it s my understanding that the whole process of sample taking, sending them off to the lab and getting a final report takes about 90 days. This report must then be attached to our application to dredge. We are one of two harbors being considered to test a new streamlined procedure for the application process. If selected it should speed up the whole project. I m really proud of our club. I feel that volunteerism is at an all time high with everyone jumping in to help when needed. Our club promotes sailing with many organized events. If you would like to sponsor an event or have an idea for an event let us know and we can help you get the ball rolling. Here are a few ideas that could use a good sponsor Bay cruise, Sunday brunch series, poker run, cruise anywhere, Club poker games, movie nights, small boat races, family day, rib cook off, photo contest, special guest speakers, learn to sail night, learn to race night, Sunday check out a small boat day open to LTS alumni, take your dog sailing day, work party around the club, wash and polish the Commodore s boat day, etc.etc. Tom Lueck Oliver s Tails! I love being me I mean what a fantastic month for ME! It started off at the Delta Doo Dah everyone really enjoyed seeing me and telling me what a great dog I am can you say snacks yea baby I scored again gotta love me! Then the very next day I got to go to the great 4 th of July raft up at the Hilton.. My, my, my what a show I got a little nervous during the bright lights but all in all it was a tail wagging event!...you ll never guess where I went next.morrow Bay! By Mini Cooper! John and Kathy Foppe hooked up with us at Harris Ranch in a pink bucket T.they are so koool. In Morrow Bay I had my own bed at the motel, got to run on the beach, rock climb and even watch an Otter have lunch. Boy-o-Boy who wouldn t want to be Me. a double woof til next time and a special woof to my friend Harley Tinkle. 5 Stockton Sailing Club Unapproved Board Minutes July 2009 Commodore Lueck called the meeting to order at 6:30 PM. Board Members Present: Tom Lueck, Gary Eggert, Peggy Feakes, Abe Ayala, Steve Canepa,, John Moyer, Karri Johnson, Gail Dameron, and Dave Van Dyke Board Members Absent: Karen DeBono, Mike Kennedy Others in Attendance: Suzi Wasielewski, Edgar Okafuji Standing Business: Agenda: Motion to approve the Agenda. Eggert/Ayala M/S/P Minutes: Motion to approve June minutes. Eggert/Moyer M/S/ P Financial Statements: Motion to approve April and May financial statements. Eggert/Ayala M/S/P Discussion regarding financials consisted of issues regarding inventory not yet completed, federal tax being a prepaid account, building rent not including the electrical billing and that depreciation has not been adjusted yet. Facilities Manager Report: Edgar Okafuji reported that May and June were very hectic due to events at the Club. G dock is almost complete and the sprinklers are being repaired and replaced around the grounds. The mower has been repaired and is working quite well and there have been more repairs on the crash boats. More pellets have been ordered to help control and eradicate the algeria densa in the harbor. Club Manager Report: Suzi Wasielewski reported that a decision was made not to replace the stolen phone used by security. Service was also cancelled. Peter Hine has agreed to be our tax preparer for year end March, We expect to have worksheets completed by August 15 th and to file them on time. The office is working to complete Ditch Run transactions, process and place special orders for t-shirts, and ship awards to those unable to stay for the awards presentation. Final numbers for Ditch Run should be available with the June financials. She hired a temporary employee from Accountemps who is working two days a week, four hours a day during the closed administrative time. Debbie continues to spend her time divided between Learn to Sail and club steward duties. She also noted that members seem to be making sure that guests are signing in and wearing name tags. She is also spending time with delinquent accounts to avoid lien sales. Discussion followed regarding the use of the Clubhouse and that members need to be respectful to each other when various activities are taking place, whether it s watching movies, playing cards, computer use or potlucks. There was also discussion about unaccounted for food and alcohol during later hours of the evening. Correspondence: Lee Harding requested that his resignation be rescinded. Joel and Barbara Line requested that their membership terminate as of June 30, Frank and Kaye Whitney are requesting a change to cruising status from July 1 to October 1. Tom Lueck will discuss and clarify this issue with them. Dennis Nugent requests his membership terminate effective July 1, Bruce and Sandy Jacobs have sold their boat and are resigning their membership effective July 1, 2009 Edgar Bossana wants to donate his Capri 22 to the Club. The Club does not accept donations and William Humphreys will be asked to work with him to sell or donate the boat. Bart Bird requests the use of the retreat between 4 and 7 PM on July 29, Motion to approve correspondence. Moyer/Eggert M/S/P Member and Guest Comments: No member and/or guest comments. Old Business: Tom Lueck reports that the card lock system quotation should come in around $6,000 and requests an increase in the amount to cover incidentals or increases due to changes or additions. Motion to increase amount to spend for the card lock system. Eggert/Moyer M/S/P The nominating committee will consist of William Humphreys, Hank Colberg, Walt Andrews, Peggy Feakes and Dave Van Dyke. New Business: There are two planter barrels sitting by the front gate that need to be removed. Edgar will be asked to take care of this problem. Closed Session: No closed session. Committee Reports: Dredging Committee: (Feakes) The soil sampling and report contract has been awarded to Applied Water Resources Corp. The permit process is next. Following reading of the contract, Tom Lueck will discuss liability issues to make sure the Club is protected. Membership Committee: (Johnson) Derek Russel Baca has requested membership. Roger Stevenson is bringing his boat from Vancouver and requests membership and berth space at the Club. David and Jennifer Lucas have requested reinstatement to the Club. If they have attended an orientation meeting, all fees are paid and outstanding issues cleared, they are approved for membership. Ayala/Feakes M/S/P Harbor and Facilities Committee: (Moyer) The kitchen was cleaned during the last week of June and interns have painted the Retreat where needed. Work has also started underneath the decking. The sand will be replaced in the sandbox under the deck. FBLI: (Eggert) No report. Regatta Committee: (Canepa) Participation is up 30% and we are under budget by $1,000. Rules and Policy Committee: (Van Dyke) The changes in the bylaws and rules will be completed and presented to the membership for a vote this year. Social and Cruise Committee: (DeBono/Dameron) No report. Junior Sailing Committee: (Kennedy) No report. Motion to Adjourn. Moyer/Johnson M/S/P Meeting Adjourned. 6 Learn To Sail Get to Know the LTS 09 Staff The instructors (white shirts) this year are as followed: Ashley Eberhard (attending CSUMB,) Connor Sparkman (attending CSUSC,) and Jillian Humphreys (attending FLC.) All of them are certified by the US Sailing Association and by American Red Cross for first aid and CPR. The assistant instructors (blue shirts) this year are as followed: Brett Farrell (attending Lincoln HS,) Dalton Fernandez (attending Lincoln HS,) Dirk Hooten (attending CSUS,) Kelsey Natshura (attending Harvard,) and Sheila Magladry (attending Cal Poly.) All of them are certified by the American Red Cross for first aid and CPR; they all have also have completed the Learn to Sail classes in years past. The SSC interns (or as I call them red shirts) this year are as followed: Adam Helms (attending Brookside Elementary,) Andrew Chapman (attending Lincoln HS,) Blake Docher (attending Christa McCaulife,) John Canepa (attending Tokay HS,) Kris Canete (attending Aviation Aeronautics Academy,) Peter Collins (attending Millswood,) and Trevor Boyce (attending Lincoln HS.) All of these hard working people deserve a lot of credit for pulling out seaweed around the harbor, staining the retreat, fixing the FJ fleet, and even the occasional water fight with the students (and Oliver.) Spotlight on TWO red shirts: Kristopher M Canete is 15 years old and was born to loving parents named Tony and Susan Canete. Kris has been an active junior member since the summer of 2008; however, his parents aren t members. Surprisingly enough Kris has only been sailing a short time, but he has already made himself known by sailing with the juniors, helping out at Opening Day, and working not only for the club, but the RYC/SSC/SCYC race clinic hired him as a JIT. Kris is even involved with Tiger rowing, swimming, and learning how to be a pilot along with having time to help us. I asked Kris what his favorite quote was and his response was: Sit down, be quite, and do your work. I asked John Canepa for a statement about his peer: Kris is a hard worker, and he is the type of worker that won t stop until the job is done and done right. He is always like to make work fun by joking around or squirting students with the squirt guns. My personal statement about Kris is: He is a bit shy when you first to meet him, but he is a wonderful addition to the clubs junior program. I have always looked to Kris as someone who will be great in life because he is not a follower. John J Canepa was born to outgoing parents named Jeff and Allison Canepa 14 years ago. John has been an active junior member since his parents rejoined the club in In the year 2008 he took the pleasure of accepting the Junior of the Year trophy and the Sportsmanship trophy along with plenty of first place trophies too. John has taken part of RYC/SSC/SCYC race clinic for the last 4 years and has taken part in the 2007, 2008 and 2009 North American Nationals. Other than his passion for sailing John likes soccer and working in his father s orchard. John s favorite when working for the club is Treat others like you want to be treated. Here is a statement about John from Kris Canete John is both an excellent sailor along with being an enthusiastic worker. He is always looking forward to the next job. No matter if it is cleaning the retreat or pulling seaweed out of the harbor. He wants to get the first job done so he can hurry up to the second job. One unique thing about John is that he likes to drink large amounts of ice tea. My statement about this young man is: John is a young man who will go far in life and will be admired. Keep racing!
