3 ! August 2006 S M T W T F S "!#! Budge Humphreys Life with out chocolate would not be worth living Sharon Wicksted July 22, 2006 It s August in the Central Valley, and the temperatures are hitting new highs. What a perfect time to cool off with a sail on the Delta, maybe all the way to the nice cool Bay. Just remember some time in January you ll be thinking back fondly on this weather, wishing it was this warm. August August 8 August 11 August 12 September Sept 2-4 Board Meeting General Meeting Hot August Nights Labor Day Cruise You may have noticed, the Carr Electric and PG& E trucks around the club lately, well they have started the electrical upgrade to the facility. They should be done in a couple months. Please try to stay out of their way and give them room to work. The club might also experience some periods with out power. The facilities manager/harbor Master (Susan) and I will try to let you know when these might occur. Early in July, a group of hardy individuals, from the SSC went to the Alameda yacht club to race in the Columbia 5.5 Nationals. The three Stockton boats entered in the event Italia (David Van Dyke) Naked Lady (Sue Lund) and Faith (Bill Canepa) all had a great time. The Alameda Yacht Club was a great host and welcomed everyone with open arms. The racing was fantastic with the south bay offering up 12 to 18 knot of winds on both days. Congratulations to all who participated, the event was a lot of fun, even if the results weren t exactly what we had in mind. The club has a lot of slips, approximately 300 and another 40 or 50 dry storage spots, available for both member and non-member use. It is a tuff enough job, to keep track of all these spaces, with out individuals, deciding on their own which slip, end tie or parking spot they are going to leave their boat in. You are only entitled to use the slip the club rents to you. You are not allowed to move your boat around with in the harbor or the parking lot, with out the permission, of the Harbor Master. Boats left in the harbor or in the parking lot with out the permission and knowledge of the Harbor Master may be moved if they interfere with club activities and/or other tenants of the harbor. Owners of boats not parked in their proper slip, end tie or parking spot may not be notified when their boat is being moved or where it is being moved too. Please let our Harbor Master know if you are going to leave your boat anywhere other than its proper slip, end tie or parking space. Sept 12 Board Meeting Sept 15 General Meeting Sept PCISA Tuleberg Regatta Sept 23 Annual Regatta Meeting Sept 23 Fall Race #1 Remember to sign up and join us for the Hot August Nights dinner and street dance, August 12 th. 5 (continuation on June Board Minutes) Adventures in Paradise, Memories One of my favorite events of the year has come and gone. That is when the grizzled salts of the Stockton Sailing Club invite a large group of potential neophyte sailors to the premises. The grizzled salts are generous with their time, facilities and patience. The youthful sailors experience the joys and sorrows of leaving the nest (some for the first time) and having to cope with strangers and develop skills that will be treasured for the rest of their lives. These experiences will show the young nautical learning individuals ways to deal with not only their fine sailing vessel but themselves in an unfamiliar state of affairs. Confidence will be instilled and the participants will be better for the experience. Hopefully most of the youth will go back to their home better for have gone through the nautical encounter. The grizzled salts, after the grousing, will think back into their own ancient recollections with the sudden revelation they too have first time reminiscences of heeling over past the physical limits of a sailing vessel and becoming all to familiar with the contents of Davy Jones Locker. My agents have informed me that many of the bipeds that make up the Stockton Sailing club are planning an event that celebrates the warm days of summer. The celebration will take the form eating copious amounts provisions and imbibing probably at least some adult beverages. This is one event when my feline friends show patience and encourage the bipeds to enjoy one of the felines favorite facility. This facility will be the venue of some raucous dancing where many will display some before undiscovered moves and steps. Hopefully the participants will not injure themselves too badly with the adult beverage inspired maneuvers and incantations. the Ditch Run. Also, two outsiders broke into the Pepsi machine at the point. The timer for the gate will be adjusted to shorten the hours when it is open. Everyone should keep security in mind and be watchful. Facility Manager s Report: Susan McLain reported that there are 31 slip vacancies. Dock maintenance is ongoing and leaking hose bibs have been repaired. The old galley stoves have been refurbished and are installed in the retreat. Reggie Stone will install rope lighting that will remain through Hot August Nights Edgar has replaced props on three crash boats. The lawn mower, weed eater and hedge trimmer all broke down but Edgar will repair in house. BBQ s have been repaired. A lien sale is scheduled for June 20. A club member will be billed for damages to a crash boat. Committee Reports: F.B.L.I. Committee: Mr. Dameron noted that when the Club begins to replace docks, we have to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act. The City will essentially tell the Club what we have to do. The cost of compliance is unknown. Membership Committee: Commodore Humphreys reported on the following membership applications: Andy Goodman James and Gracie Shum Motion to approve for membership. Lueck/Ayala (M.S.P.) Rules and Policy: No report on new rules, but it was discussed that spray painting and removal of bottom paint by sanding or otherwise is not permitted. Social and Cruise: July 4 th the events are planned at the Club. Volunteers are needed. Junior Sailing Committee: LTS has begun for the summer. Team racing practice is on Sunday evening and Junior sailing is scheduled for Monday evening. Bartholomew Negro --Rick Gibson Secretary %

6 Around the Harbor Phase Two of the PGE electrical upgrade project is underway. Two lot areas are designated for backfill sand that will be placed after the two new PGE transformers are replaced, one near the rear gate next to the warehouse, and the other near the pump house next to the Retreat area. At the head of each dock, new panels will be laid into six foot square cement pads. All conduit wiring will be placed underground to connect from the transformers to each panel. Please bear with us as this project is conducted and expect to see some changes in landscaping at the head of each dock. We expect to have the new transformers and panels completed by November. Our employees have been working hard in getting our grounds back into shape after a brief interruption in grounds keeping in July. We are treating the grass and working on our sprinkler system. To assist Edgar and Scott in their work, please park your cars slightly away from the curbs where there is grass. Simply pull in back just far enough so that the edges may be reached and so that your car will not be soaked if it is necessary to provide water to the grass during regular work hours. Edgar has been studying ways to improve our irrigation system and to treat our crabgrass and other weeding problems. You may see some trenches dug in the grassy areas and some patches of brown grass as we conduct this project, but when completed, you should notice a marked improvement in our grounds. Remember to contact the office if your vehicle is to be left for a period of time in the lot while you are out cruising on your boat. Storage of any trailer or vehicle on the grounds for any period beyond a few days must be arranged for in advance with the harbor office. We have had situations recently where boats have been found in slips not assigned to them. Please do not leave your boat in any slip in the harbor without making prior arrangements. All slips are assigned by the harbor master s office. Most of you are very diligent in keeping us informed of your plans, but occasionally there are surprises! Thank you for your cooperation. ---Susan McLain Harbormaster order. STOCKTON SAILING CLUB UNAPPROVED BOARD MINUTES JULY 11, 2006 Commodore Humphreys called the meeting to Board Members present: William Humphreys, Mike Stefani, Peggy Feakes, Bob Doscher, Abe Ayala, Chris Corbin, and Rick Gibson. Leuck Board Members absent: Nancy Farnum and Tom Also in attendance: Susan McLain. Agenda: Motion to approve agenda for July meeting: Feakes/Corbin (M.S.P.) Minutes: Approval of minutes from June meeting: Postponed until August meeting. Financial Statement: Monthly financial statements for the month of May and the month of June were reviewed by the Board. Motion to approve: Feakes/Ayala (M.S.P.) Correspondence: 1. The Club received two letters from members requesting that his/her domestic partner be removed from their membership and billing. After discussion, Susan will contact and ask for that request from the partner whose name is to be removed. That person may then request a new membership in his or her name. It was agreed that in these circumstances, SSC will not be involved in disputes between marital or non-marital partners when members separate. 2. The Club also received a letter regarding three children who wanted to participate in Learn to Sail but could not afford the fees. Commodore Humphreys will seek donations for their participation. 3. The Club received a letter offering to train and pay junior members to become dock walkers. No action taken. 4. County Sheriff sent a letter requesting support of a county ordinance regulating boating safety issues including as an example regulating live aboards. No action taken. 5. 7 Come one, come all Come big, come small Junior El Toros and Fj's days. Anyone who is wanting to sail and have fun with the rest of the SSC juniors please come out. Starting June 3rd there will be days where anyone can come out and sail the El Toros that the club has or the one that they own. It will begin at 10 am and end at 2 pm Starting June 12 there will be Fj sailing. Every Monday night after Learn to Sail (5 pm) and will end at dusk. Any questions call: Kelly Humphreys (209) Wednesday Nights August Hello, my name is Jillian Humphreys for those who don t know me. I am also known as the Commodores kid, or the daughter of Budge and Kelly. Well anyways I was born and raised out here at the Stockton Sailing Club, I love it here. I went through the Learn to Sail program that was ran by Rob McCormick, and Kari Shepherd. I sailed FJs with Jarred Hachman as my coach. Now, I sail for Lincoln in High School regattas and represent the SSC in the West Marine Fun Regatta in Santa Cruz. Everybody out here says hello to me on a regular basis, but I don t get to see all of you on a regular basis, so hello to you all. Many of you members like to see what I write each month, well I have to say that I only did my first article to prove to you members that discrimination has not left the United States. I am told day after day that I am not a girl. Instead I am a boy, well I am ok with that because I am used to my way of life. I don t like nail polish and make up. I don t care if my hair is messed up. I don t care if I smell like sweat after I have been in race. I don t care if I can t run a mile under 8 minutes like the boys in gym class, heck I can t even run it under 10 minutes like the girls. But, when you put me on a sailboat and a spinnaker needs to come down with pressure on it in 20 knot wind I can pull it down with help of Hobie Jensen in the pit. I can also grind the winches. Tom Lueck gave 3 juniors the chance to sail like crewmen. Those juniors are Martin Gibson, Hobie Jensen and I. I never thought that it would ever work out with Martin and me on the same boat, but it turns out that we both want to work our butts off while sailing Sir Leansalot. We have great communication when we want to. Hobie is the new one to the team, but he caught on pretty fast. He is a great grinder and he helps with spinnaker hoist and take downs. Hobie also has fast reaction when taking down the main and docking. Martin is pretty much is good at everything, so the name of Golden Boy Gibson is still with him. Tom does his thing of knowing the course, getting the clock ready and of course driving. Yes, I am the only female crew on board while intensely racing. I like it that way because it is totally different then on Harmony with Nancy Farnum (Spring Series.) Nobody can put me down by calling me a guy. I will just say thank you and go on with my life. &

8 (continuation on July Board minutes.) Old Business: Electric upgrades: PG&E has been on site apparently preparing to begin their work New Business: The Board discussed the importance of enforcing existing rules including the requirement that guests must sign in and wear name tags. Also, the Club now has former junior members who are 21 years of age and not full time students. Although their parents may be members, the adult children should now apply for individual memberships. Also, even if a junior member is 21 years of age, he or she is not permitted behind the bar. The Board also discussed that during this month s Junior Sailing Camp, adults will be needed to invite juniors to race on their boats during the Wednesday night race. SSC is a member of the Stockton Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber holds get togethers at various locations and the Club will plan to host a Chamber mixer on September 7, This is an opportunity to promote the SSC and attract new members. It involves the cost of sending out mailers, providing hors d'oeuvres. The Club would retain all income from the sale of drinks. Motion to approve up to $1, to host Chamber of Commerce mixer. Doscher/Feakes (M.S.P.) Facility Manager s Report: Susan McLain reported that regular maintenance is on-going around the Club. There have been problems with water pressure in several locations that Edgar will attempt to correct. The Club may need to update the P.O.S. software. Crash boats and motors have been serviced and are ready for junior camp use. The annoying noise outside the board room has been identified and eliminated. Committee Reports: Harbor and Facilities: Commodore Humphrey s reported on Mr. Leuck s behalf that there may be a method to repair some of the wood beams outside the club house that have dry Thank you so much to junior member Dalton Ferendez. You made me believe that there is hope for everyone in this world, and just remember that if you need anything later in life I will always be out here sailing. Your letter touched me deeply and I was pleased to see the change of personality and willing to pay attention in the matter of 2 weeks. --- Thank you, Jillian Humphreys repair some of the wood beams outside the club house that have dry rot. We will try to make repairs in a few locations and evaluate results. Dredging Committee: Mr. Stefani has been in contact with the engineers and submitted to the Board communications that have gone back and forth. Progress is slow. He expects to obtain an outline of exactly what specific steps need to be taken in order to dredge. Membership Committee: Commodore Humphreys reported on the receipt of new applications for membership. He has met with or spoken to each of the applicants: Peter Tuxon Pat and Carol Scott Tom and Karen DeBono Beverly Sheehy Gary Johnson Matt Gibson (Junior membership) Motion to approve applications for membership. Doscher/Feakes (M.S.P.) Regatta Committee: Ms. Feakes reported her committee will meet next week. Obviously, Spring Series racing is over, Wednesday night racing is ongoing. The Delta Ditch Run went very well. We did have a significant amount of food left over and Dr. Doscher discussed the possibility of either an advance sale of dinner tickets or including the cost of dinner in the entry fees for the race. Junior Sailing Committee: Commodore Humphreys reported that Junior Sailing Camp started over the previous weekend and will last all week. Learn to Sail for juniors is on-going through the summer. Nominating Committee: Mr. Stefani volunteered to be part of the committee to nominate members to run for next year s Board. The committee members have contacted members to run for office. Mr. Stefani anticipates having a completed list of candidates by the August meeting. -- Rick Gibson Secretary '

We really Snowbird owe them a huge thank you because they cut short a trip to San Diego to come home early and do this for the membership. Dinner was hot dogs, potato salad, watermelon and apple pie and ice cream for dessert. We had eight entries in our chili cooking contest and all of the entries were very tasty indeed. The judges had a difficult time coming to agreement on the winners since they had to choose between many different styles of chilies ranging from traditional chilies through vegetarian chilies, but they finally came to an agreement. The grand prize this year was won by Mary Dakin. Mary, and her husband, Chris, prepared lots of condiments to go with their chili entry and said they will be back again next year to vie for the first place challenge!! To the rest of the contestants, thank you for your contributions and we hope to see you all again next year! I want to thank all of you who came to help decorate the club for this event. The Club looked great and we had fun getting the decorations in place. Following the dinner, several boats went out to enjoy the fireworks display in Stockton and others just stayed at the Club to watch the various displays around the Valley.
