1 Boulder Yacht Club Boulder Bits Bits and Pieces. Some Noteworthy; none newsworthy. Vol. XXX/No. 2 May 2007 MORE RAMP DEEPER WATER Yo! You sailors with the deep draft boats no longer have to drive around to the windy public ramp to launch. The Marina has extended the launching ramp. This extension will allow us to lift out a boat that draws 8' at summer pool or 6' at winter pool (although the route along the north side of Jost Van Dock may limit that to 7' and 5' respectively - until we get some more dredging done). How did they do that The pad was 22' wide x 34' long and 5" thick with fiber and 1/2 " rebar every 1' length wise and cross wise. This pad was pushed in over the existing pad and onto a pre-graded incline of hard pan (natural hard clay) and was stopped to allow a 3' overlap with the existing pad. Two layers of 1 3/4" thick reinforced concrete pads (1st layer 2'x2', second top layer 1'x2') will but up against the 5" lip to provide a gradual stair step for the boat lift tires or trailer tires. The raised lip on the front end prevented the slab from digging into the clay as it rode past the existing ramp so it would slide along the pre-graded clay sub-grade. Before pouring the concrete we put a layer of sand on the bottom (top of the existing pad) and also used sand to fill in any crevices. We then lined the entire form with two layers of 9 mil plastic which allowed the cured pad to break loose and slide into place when pushed by the Photos by Steve Kratchman Bulldozer. Dennis FROM THE COMMODORE Ahoy BYC Sailors, The weather seems to have finally smoothed out and West Marine is having one sale after another. Boats all over the lot are being opened up, some for the first time in months. Everyone's thoughts are turned to maintenance and upgrades. I know many of you are like myself and find working on our boats very therapeutic in relieving the stress of today's hurried lifestyle, but let's not lose sight of what a sail boat is for. I hope to see more BYC members out on the lake enjoying sailing. Remember that our New Member Fun Race and New Member Wine and Cheese Party are on May 5th. If you're like me and your boat is still on the hard there are lots of people with an open boat policy that would be glad to get extra crew, it's as simple as asking. I encourage all member to join in the race and the party to help kick off the season and welcome the new Boulder Yacht Club is an Illinois not-for-profit corporation. All rights reserved
2 members. I would also like to invite everyone to a new lake wide event at CSA, The Blessing of the Fleet and Taste of Carlyle. It takes place at the CSA on May 19th with a float-by-blessing and food stands from restaurants in Carlyle, so we can go make a day of it. I'll get more information and post it at the clubhouse. Another big lake wide event is the Leukemia Cup Regatta May based at the CSA. This is a great time. I ll more info later. Please welcome Bill and Barbara Jaworowski, with their 30' Hunter named Moonbeams, located on Jost Van Dock; and Dan and Julie Garland, who do not have a boat at Boulder, but we'll work on them. Dan is owner of Madinger Wines and has already expressed an interest in hosting a wine tasting party for us this season. I've been to previous BYC wine tasting parties, and boy is he in for a surprise. Be sure to say hello to the Jaworowskis and the Garlands on May 5 th at our New Members Wine and Cheese. Also, don't forget the two members mentioned in last months Bits, Steve and Kim Catino and Rick and Christine Olsen. I would like to send out a reminder to everyone to get your party reservations in on time. It is very helpful for those planning parties to have some idea of the headcount the week before. We don't like charging more at the door, and we would hate to have to turn anyone away, but running out of food or drink would not be fair to those who send in their reservations. I have mailed out membership and reciprocal cards for everyone who has renewed, and I am mailing reminders to those who haven't. If you mailed your check, but have not gotten your cards, please call me at , so we can get it straightened out. Of our 88 members from last year, only 39 have renewed so far. Please get your checks in so as not to miss out on any of the fun! See you around the fire ring. I hope it will get better once we have our first gathering on the hill. I would like to try a fun race on may 5th if I can get together enough racers. The racing fee for the season will be $50 per boat. I will put $25 for the lake wide races and $25 for the racing at Boulder. I hope to see everyone this weekend the 28th. You guessed it; Steve Kratchman installed hand Scrubbers in the rest rooms. This months blast from the past. The No Boat Regatta, Chili Supper, and Commodores Race all started in the same year. What year was it? FROM BYC MEMBER BYC Environmental Control Board (A bit of humor from Steve Kratchman) Actually I believe as both a nonprofit membership organization as well as responsible citizens of this world, we owe it both to our children, ourselves, and this community ( BYC) to act responsibly and recycle whatever we can. This means at the very least, aluminum cans placed in the container by the telephone pole in front of the restrooms. What it does in a small but very meaningful way is to show by example to our children what it means to respect our environment, keep waste and landfills to a minimum, and repay some expenses incurred by the club because I turn those cans into cash for the club racing program. Bottom line is It is just the right thing to do! And if we all strive to keep our cans separately, crush them at parties separately, place them in bags separately, I will do the recycling which will build a nest egg, keep the area clean, eliminate space in the land fills, teach us and our kids to respect our environment because when you see a real landfill it appears to be a mountain but it is really yours and my trash and it just does not seem there will ever be enough room for it all. If you want to know an easy and simple way to handle this task on your boat, come on over to mine at Margaritaville-M59 and see the installed can crusher. Nothing fancy but I can retain a month of cans on my boat before taking them off to recycle. Maybe give the kids $.01 per can to crush them. It couldn t hurt. Although it was to be for oiur kids, I realized it could be a drive-time event as well as a family affair. But the winner(s) prize is for kids only. As an example of how these work, I missed the April issue of the Boulder Bits so here are questions and answers: 1-What do elves use to make sandwiches? (Shortbread) 2-Why did the boy stick a hose in his friend s ear?(to brainwash him) 3-Who granted the fish s wish? (its fairy codmother) So now you know the answers are not very forthcoming. If you re game, begin with this month s KIDS KORNER and see just how nutty your answers can be so we can all have a good time reading them. Although I did not expose anyone s answers last year, this year might be different. No names will be mentioned in order to protect the innocent. May Issue 1-What kind of fruit do trees like? 2-How do porcupines talk? 3-What s more dangerous than pulling out a shark s tooth? Page 3

THE LEUKEMIA CUP REGATTA SUPPORT A GREAT EVENT; HAVE A GREAT TIME Can you believe it? The Leukemia Cup Regatta is less than one month away. I hope everyone is making preparations for this Memorial Day weekend of great sailing and great fun. The weekend starts on Friday, May 26 with a Happy Hour at CSA hosted by CYC from 5:-9:00 PM. Saturday starts with a continental breakfast from 7-9:00 AM. Following the 9:30 AM opening ceremonies, the racing will begin for the several fleets. The Rum Tent and the beer wagon open following the last race for registered participants. Dinner, a live auction of some great nautical stuff and fabulous live entertainment all starts at 6:00 PM and go until. Racing resumes at 10:00 AM on Sunday following the 8:00 AM continental breakfast. Racing and fundraising awards will be presented following lunch and the conclusion of racing. Ask any Boulderites who have attended; it s a great party and lots of fun. Most importantly your participation will contribute to the critical need to find a cure to blood related cancers. It is important to note is that all the funds raised in the St. Louis area stay here funding researchers and assisting patients and their families. 5 SPRING THAW Thanks to all who helped with the painting of the pavilion on Sat. April 28th. It was nice to see some new faces along side the die-hard members that have been with the BYC, for some years. I know it was hard to give up a few hours from working on their own boats or enjoying a sail and the help was appreciated. I think the fresh strawberries and moist banana bread helped draw them in too. We still have more painting to do (ran out of paint) so if you missed your chance let Kort know you'll give up an hour to help finish the job.
