3 Commodore s Comments I am writing this column from Lake Michigan (Holland, MI). We drove back with our two family dogs, Samantha and Katie to check out Tapdance, the Pearson 37 we recently purchased. What an adventure! John kept the pedal to the metal for 3 days to put us in here Saturday night. Sunday we were looking at the bottom of the boat and Monday we were watching the yard splash it. As a matter of fact, the yard was splashing boats every fifteen minutes. It was like a zoo watching the sometimes-frantic effort to get everyone sailing by Memorial Day. The SEASON is here on Lake Michigan, but don t blink your eye or you just might miss it! Of course, the Season is here in Stockton also! No, I m not talking Christmas! I m talking -Sailing, Cruising, Bar-B-Qs and hanging with your friends at the Stockton Sailing Club. This is the month it all starts to really happen! So check your calendar and make sure to take time for yourself and family to join the many events scheduled this year at the SSC. There are races and anchor-outs and parties galore! Two whopper club events coming up in June are the Delta Ditch Run and the Annual South Tower Race. Whether you race or not, bring friends and the family (include the grand kids) to watch the all-afternoon downwind parade of Delta Ditch spinnakers finishing at the Club. Look for information elsewhere in this issue on these two great events. I would like to welcome a new member to the Board of Directors. Doug Haas has volunteered to assume the duties of the Port Captain for the balance of Doug has been a member for almost 20 years and has worked in the background of many of our events. The next time you see Doug, thank him for stepping forward to fill this sometimes-difficult position. I have to finish this now and get it ed to the editor. This is the 9th and the 20th is the deadline. Besides, we bought a new scrub brush and boat soap today so that I can put John to work tomorrow. I ll try my best to keep him on task instead of talking with the natives. Wish me LUCK! Happy Sailing, Debbie Walker, Commodore Wednesday Nights in June & July Wednesday Night Racing aka: Beer Can Races Come on out and go for a more laid back, less serious and more fun evening race. No fees, no registration, just show up and sign in!

Hope to see you there, Honu, Harold & Susan Farley ADVENTURES IN PARADISE Two Women Driving It was a beautiful morning with a promise from the wind gods of a good days racing on the water. The wind was gusty and was not coming from the usual direction but the conditions were manageable. There was a record number of challenged sailors on a make of boat that shall remain nameless (these sailors are extremely competitive, dangerously so). The Stockton Sailing Club has always prided itself for being very progressive in allowing the fair ones (you know, the ones that are pretty and smell good.) To participate in a mans sport. But there is evidence that the club has gone to far. All the gentlemen of the club were sailing properly during some trying weather. But there were two vessels that were being piloted by two fair maidens. The competition between these two fair ladies was keen. The lady from the competitive fleet instigated a tacking duel. After working their crews without mercy for several hours the two females were approaching each other with blood in their eyes. Each succeeding tack was closer. All the gentlemen pilots were giving the dangerous duo as much space as possible. Still the women (the oaths that were being tossed at each other disqualified them from being called ladies any longer) continued to throw caution to wind. All the gentleman sailors could see what was developing was going to be bad, very bad. It had to happen and it did. Both women firmly refused to back down and the thunderous crashing noise reverberated through both vessels and across the water. Unfortunately here was one injury and that happen to a defenseless gentleman crew-member. The rest of the male sailors were traumatized mentally for many weeks after the incident. Even now I have difficulty relaxing in the bow of a vessel. I feel it is imperative that the proper committee look into the situation where two females can be allowed to steer a vessel without proper male supervision. It is probable that the rules of racing should address this sad of state of affairs. Bartholomew Negro 5

8 SOCIAL AND CRUISE COMMITTEE The Social and Cruise Meeting held its 5th meeting for the year on Saturday, May 0th at :00 AM. Members Present: Anna Jones, Chairman; Rose Eberhard, Secretary; Peter Hines, Rosalee Schimpf, Karri Shepherd, Bonnie Lopez, Rear Commodore, Debbie Walker, Commodore Meeting Minutes Dave Clark introduced himself to the committee. He has done approximately 00,000 miles around the world. He wanted to come to one of our social events and play with his clarinet and talk about his experience when he traveled around the world as a fund raiser. The social committee will look into it after the Bruce Schwab fund raiser kicks off in July. Rose Eberhard presented the costing sheet for the Delta Ditch Run Dinner and Breakfast. Dinner will be for $0.00/person. Breakfast will be at $2.00/person from 6AM-9AM and $4.00/person from 9AM-AM. Sign-up sheets for volunteers will be posted in the clubhouse this week. For the Delta Ditch Run it was suggested to have extra food e.g. clam chowder, minestrone soup and bread for guest and members who would like something hot before dinner starts at 6PM. Costing will be done before the end of this week. Rosalee Schimpf presented her plans for the Bruce Schwab fund raiser event which will be on July 26th. The cost will be $5.00 per person. Members can bring outside friends to this event. Sign-up sheet and flyers will be posted in the club. Rosalee is looking for volunteers for this event which will be posted in the clubhouse. Wayne Wilson presented a new business. Wayne told the committee that Tom Lueck wanted to do a Cioppino Feed, it is very similar to a Crab Feed. Since Tom is only available on Sundays, the feed is tentatively set on October 2th. More details to follow in the next few weeks. Wayne also suggested if we can charge more money on Friday Night Mixer Dinners so we can have good quality dinner. Some of the members drive to the Club on Friday Nights and wanted some good dinner. Debbie Walker says that she will look into it and make a suggestion to the board. It won t happen right away. Most probably in the future. Announcements Tinsley Island Cruise was moved to October 8-9. The June Committee meeting will be on June 7th at 9:00 AM. It was moved a week earlier because of the Delta Ditch Run. Ladies Luncheon & Fashion Show Great Looks, Great Books was this year s theme of the Ladies Luncheon & Fashion Show. This year s time tested event was a delightful occasion enjoyed by more than fifty Delta Divas. Paula Almaas and Kathy Camarena treated us to a parade of the latest in women s and children s fashions by Campbell s, Kathy Camarena Draper & Damon, Macy s, Old Navy, and Talbot s. Our graceful models (Rose E., Peggy F. & Abbey W., Gail G., Anna, Sidney and Shelby J., Jill H., Kathy and Jennifer R.) gave each of their outfits ranging from sportswear to evening attire their own unique sparkle and cleverly tied their favorite classic novel to the occasion. Our stewards, (Sam D., David E., Hank, Phil H., Peter H., Mike S.) complete, with pressed shirts and neckties went all out to make the ladies feel special while our chefs (One Ton Club) prepared a gourmet treat. Raffle tickets for items generously donated by members made this function a classic success story. Thank you to Kathy, Paula and everyone who contributed to this memorable event. Hope to see you there, Houn, Harold & Susan Farley Did You Know OILY WASTE DISCHARGE The Refuse Act of 898 prohibits throwing, discharging or depositing any refuse matter of any kind (including trash, garbage, oil, and other liquid pollutants) into the waters of the United States. The Federal Water Pollution Control Act prohibits the discharge of oil or hazardous substances which may be harmful into U.S. navigable waters. Vessels over 26 feet must display a placard, at least 5 by 8 inches, made of durable material, fixed in a conspicuous place in the machinery spaces, or in the bilge pump control station. The Water Pollution Control Act regulations require all vessels with propulsion machinery to have a capacity to retain oil mixtures on board. A fixed or portable means to discharge oily waste to a reception facility is required. A bucket or bailer is suitable as a portable means of discharging oily waste on recreational vessels. No person may intentionally drain oil or oily waste from any source into the bilge of a vessel. The Coast Guard must be notified immediately if a vessel discharges oil or hazardous substances into the water. Call the National Response Center at Provide the location where the discharge occurred, the color, the source and type of substance if known, the size of area involved and how long the spill has been observed. 10 Nancy & Jimmy s 55th Birthday (Of Sailing That Is!) Nancy Robinson (Farnum) and Jimmy Warfield began sailing together as kids over 55 years ago at Lake Merritt. Much water (as they say) has gone under the bridge since that time, but both of these highly skilled and competitive sailors are still out there making waves in the sailing world. Both Nancy and Jimmy now reside in the Stockton area and are both very active in the Stockton Sailing Club. Friends, former and current competitors as well as other interested persons are all welcome to celebrate this great event with Nancy and Jim at the Stockton Sailing Club Retreat on Sun. July 27th from :00 P.M. to? There will be food, drink and all sorts of wild tales about sailing in the Bay Area and beyond over the last 2 century. If you have a reason to roast or toast either of these sailors, you should be there. If you are trying to recall if either of these two have sailed through your life check out the following. Nancy started sailing El Toro s in 948 after her big brother Herb refused to drag her along to his motor boat races. After several less than glorious attempts (capsizing off Alameda s south shore as well as Lake Merritt) Nancy finally began to get the hang of it and later went on to win the El Toro National Championship in 973. She sailed El Toros for two years, Zephyrs for six years, she and her husband, Al, sailed snipes and then went back to the El Toros for sixteen years. Then Al and Nancy raced and primarily cruised a Bay Lady, Santana 22, Ranger 29, and now Silver Shadow an Islander 36. As a teenager Nancy went to the Adams Cup (The Womans National Championship) twice representing the Pacific Coast. She DockTalk Have you checked it out! Yet? DockTalk on-line, on the SSC website. And now, she is alive, retired and sailing the I36 on S.F.Bay, Columbia Challenger and El Toro out of the Stockton Sailing Club. In 948 Jimmy, at eleven years old began sailing in El Toro #20 Phhfftt at Encinal YC. He became very skilled and went on to sail snipes, 505 s at a World Class level, Santana 22 at a championship level, Columbia 5.5 s, and now sails his Etchells Final Final to club championships. He has always sailed his El Toro in the top group having picked up several National Championships along the way. In 956 Nancy and Jimmy were the lightest team competing in the Olympic Trials in Snipes off of the Berkeley pier. They got the Bronze and were alternates to Jules and Jerry Voerge and Wayne Smith. Both have won the Bull Ship, Nancy twice and Jim four times. Nancy now races very competitively with the Stockton Columbia Challenger fleet taking a very close second last year. She also is now cruising the Bay, Delta and CA coast with her husband, Al in their Islander 36, Silver Shadow. Jim, now retired from making sails, sails his Final Final very successfully in the SSC series races while being prominent in the El Toro fleet. This birthday event promises to be a real fun time with fellow sailors and friends spanning over 50 years. Nancy and Jim cordially invite any and all of you that have raced, sailed or knew them over this period to join them in Stockton on the 27th. See you then. Please R.S.V.P. to or to silvershadow@attbi.com to let us know that you will be coming. Art Barnes EDITOR The December 2003, will be my last issue, as the editor of the SSC s newsletter, DockTalk. This is a fun way to get involved and learn more about what happens at your club. 14 EYC COMMODORE CHALLENGE April 26th 2003 Our Commodore, Debbie Walker, was invited to assemble a crew and participate in the Encinal Yacht Club s Commodore Challenge, this past April. Each commodore was required to drive the boat and race with club members. Four clubs were represented; Berkeley YC, SSC, Richmond YC, and Encinal YC. After three races, south of the Bay Bridge Debbie, the only woman skipper, placed second, with the crew of John Walker, Jarred & Jim Hachman, Erich Bauer, Glen Robinson and Ray Hawkins. They sailed Pat Browns, Shock 34 PC, Cowabunga and competed against; a Tartan 0 (Berkeley YC, Winner), Olson 34 (RYC, 3rd), and Express 27 (EYC, 4th). After all the racing, EYC put on a nice dinner and awards presentation for the participants. Congratulations to Debbie and crew! And thank you Pat for letting SSC borrow your boat. Crewman Chris Shepherd and Skipper Brooks Sperry of the SSC, finished second in the Annual Delta Star Regatta held in late April. The first attempt to hold the regatta was cancelled due to lack of wind. Several weeks later several sailors retuned to battle it out. Our Commodore and her crew, placed 2nd in the EYC Commodores Challenge. Upcoming Events We ve gone from Winter to Summer and just like the weather, racing is hot! Wednesday Night Racing Come on out and go for a more laid back, less serious and more fun evening race. No fees, no registration, just show up and sign in! Ladies Series June 7th & 2st Girls NO ONE showed for the first race. This is our time to show the men that we can go out and race, without them. Mercury & Snipe Regatta June 7th Calling all Mercs and Snipe one whole day of racing dedicated to you! Delta Ditch Run June 4th This is the biggest event of the year for the SSC. If your not volunteering or racing, it is a great day for spectating! The Last Spring Series Race June 22nd The winner of some fleets will be decided and who will continue on to the Race of Champions. South Tower June 27th & 28 Time to prove your stamina! Can you sail to the Golden Gate and back? Without stopping, running aground, running out of liquids or sunscreen? Lipton Cup July 2th & 3 Three boats with hand picked crews will go to the bay, to race against other big city yacht clubs for the Cup. The Race of Champions July 9th The winners from each Spring Series fleet race against each others to see who s the Champion. Jack & Jill Race July 20th Guys get your Girls or Girls get your Guys, come on out and double hand your boat in a fun race. Long Distance #2 July 26th Who will win the second LD race? Will it be the Duck or the Happy bunch? Five boats raced the first race, but you can still go out and challenge them. Single-Handed Race July 27th Like yourself? Know how to sail? Why not test your skills. Be the skipper and the crew all in one!
