WORK IN PROGRESS March Reporter: Dave Yotter HMS Bellona 1760 Chris Carl HMS Bellona was a 74-gun Bellonaclass third-rate ship of the line of the Royal Navy. Designed by Si8r Thomas Slade, she was a prototype for the iconic 74-gun ships of the line of the latter part of the 18 th century. Her particulars were: Tons burthen: 1615 bm (British measurement); Length: 168 ft. on the gun deck and 138 ft. keel; Beam: 47 ft.; Draught: 21 ft.; Depth of hold: 20 ft.; Complement: 650 officers and men; Armament: Lower gun deck: 28 X 32 pounders; Upper gun deck: 28 X 18 pounders; Quarter deck: 14 X 9 pounders; Fore castle: 4 X 9 pounders. After Bellona was paid off in 1783 she was decommissioned briefly in 1789 in expectation of war with Russia, but didn t get into action again until 1793, when she went to the West Indies. On 10 January 1797, Bellona and Babet drove a small French privateer schooner ashore on Deseada. They tried to use the privateer Legere, of six guns and 48 men, which Bellona had captured three days earlier, to retrieve the schooner that was on shore. In the effort, both French privateers were destroyed. Then Babet chased a brig, which had been a prize to the schooner, ashore. The British were unable to get her off so they destroyed her. For this action Babet and Bellona were paid head money in 1828, more than 30 years later. Wikipedia. Chris is making progress on the HMS Bellona. It is being built from a plank on bulkhead Corel kit in 1:100 scale. All bulkhead frames are installed on the keel and the main, forecastle and the poop decks are in place. Also installed are the decks in the great cabin and head areas. The first layer of hull planking is now completed including the gun port openings with the area around the bow being the last part. Chris is now ready to tackle the final layer of planking and wants to have these planks laid down with no nails or mechanical fasteners needed and plans to pre-bend the planks, particularly in the bow and astern areas to help accomplish this. The stern gallery railing is ready to install and he is working on the quarter galleries. The photo etch has been installed in the stern gallery. Chris is making great progress on this ship model and it should be a real beauty.
Painting Simmons Anna Belle Bob Penikas safe at sea and look traditional as well. The John Simmons design is based on an article in WoodenBoat Magazine about a 13-foot gaff-rigged micro cruiser for sailing on the Great Lakes, but with a few amenities. He chose to do a similar vessel with all required elements for weekend cruising, or a week or two, yet spacious enough to day sail with up to five guests pus the one-man crew. The result is a craft 18 4 in length with a beam of 8 4. The hull form is similar to a Cape Cod but with a jib added to increase her windward qualities. The craft should sail well and be trailerable, Bob has documented John s Anna Belle in a framed painting of the model. The model is shown painted in acrylic on a 9 X 12 inch canvas panel. The white sails and hull with the varnished mast and spars contrast nicely with the black background. Perfect Storm Vessel Andrea Gail Bob Penikas The commercial fishing vessel Andrea Gail departed Gloucester Harbor, Massachusetts on September 20, On October 30, 1991, the vessel was reported overdue. The last reported transmission from Andrea Gail was about 6:00 pm on October 28, The vessel and crewmembers remain missing and are presumed lost at sea in a major storm, referred to as the perfect storm by meteorologists; a particularly violent storm arising from a rare combination of adverse meteorological factors. The model was a free Internet download from: There were no instructions but it was relatively simple to build. The finished presentation is 6.5 inches tall, 4 inches wide and sides 2 inches. Bob printed the download on 90 lb. Wausau exact index paper. Prior to cutting out, the pages were given a protective coating using spray can Krylon Acrylic Clear Gloss. The parts were assembled using Aleens Tacky Glue. The ocean wave display stand was reinforced using Cheerios box cardboard and the final wave build was given several coats of Acrylic Gloss.
Dutch Fluyt Derfflinger Don Dressel Don finally realized the completion of the rigging of the fluyt Derfflinger, having completed the standing rigging and the basic running rigging but not the running rigging associated with the sails, as sails were not installed. The next step was to order a case for the model, so PLEXIDISPLAYS in La Habra was called ( ) This time I ordered ¼ inch plexi with the proper dimensions for the model (length, width and height plus 1 inch on all three sides), the sides and top being clear plexi and the base being black plexi with groves for the four sides on the base. In addition, I requested four blocks installed at each corner of the base in order to screw down the plexi top to the base so that the case. This resulted in the ability to pick up the case, the base, and the model in one piece. The only draw back from this scenario is that it will take two people to pick the case up, as it is too heavy for one person to do so (I think). The result was a very fine looking case in which the Derfflinger now securely resides which is very attractive. Model complete. USS Greenville (SSN-772) Bob Zmuda USS Greenville (SSN-772) is a Los Angeles-class fast attack submarine and the only vessel of the United States Navy to be named after Greenville, Tennessee. The contract to build the boat was awarded to Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company in Newport News, Virginia, on 14 December Her keel was laid down on 28 February She was launched on 17 September 1994, sponsored by Tipper Gore and commissioned on 16 February Test depth 950 (Navy says 650, Jane s says max depth is 1475 ), Speed 20+ kts official (33+ actual?), 362 long, 33 beam, 31 draft, 6000 tons surfaced, 6800 tons submerged. Armament is 4 X 21 torpedo tubes, 12 X vertical launch Tomahawk missiles. Carries Torpedoes, tomahawk and harpoon missiles and mines. Crew is 12 officers and 98 men. The nuclear fuel lasts for 30 years. The Greenville has been involved in three separate incidents. The first: On 9 February 2001, while conducting an emergency main ballast tank blow off the coast of Oahu while hosting several civilian distinguished visitors, Greenville struck the 191-foot Japanese fishery high school training ship Ehime Maru, causing the fishing boat to sink in
less than ten minutes with the death of nine crew members, including four high school students. The second: on 27 August 2001, Greenville ran aground while entering port in Saipan on a routine Western Pacific deployment. The boat s underside, rudder and propulsion train suffered minor damage; repairs required dry-docking and a significant delay in the remainder of her deployment. The third: On 27 January 2002, less than a year after colliding with Ehime Maru and five months after running aground, Greenville collided with USS Ogden (LPD-5) during a personal transfer off the coast of Oman, opening a 5 X 18 inch hole in one of Ogden s fuel tanks and spilling several thousand galleons of fuel. After the collision, both vessels left the area under their own power. Advanced SEAL Delivery System (ASDS) was a midget submarine operated by the United States Navy and United States Special Operations Command designed to provide stealthy submerged transportation for special operations forces (primarily United States Navy SEALS) from the decks of nuclear submarine for primary use as an insertion platform for covert and clandestine operations. Only one of the six planned subs was built due to problems with propeller noise, battery problems and huge ballooning cost overruns. A battery fire destroyed the only one built. Greenville operated with this system for a while. The ASDS was 65 long, 60 tons, reached 8 knots, had a crew of two and would transport 16 SEALS. Since the incidents noted, Greenville has accumulated an exemplarily service record. Bob s model of Greenville is built from a Hobby Boss kit in 1:700 scale. The midget submarine may or may not be installed on the completed model according to Bob. Wappen von Hamburg John Bakker In the 17 th century, the Hanseatic City of Hamburg was an important coastal town, well fortified but an attractive target to pirates. Particularly troubled by the corsairs of the Barbary Coast and following the loss in June 1622 of eight fully laden cargo ships, the city determined that it needed to crate a fleet of armed convoy ships to protect its interests, escorting merchant and other vessels. The plans for the construction of Leopoldus Primus (also called Leopold I) and the probably largely identical Wappen von Hamburg started in The first mention of these plans can be found in the Minutes of the Admiralty of 4 June While previously they had relied for protection on converted merchant ships, Hamburg now looked to full-fledged warships. There are few records describing the size and appearance of Leopoldus Primus or her sister ship, Wappen von Hamburg. Dimensions are unknown. What is known is that the ship was built on the model of leading Dutch design. Wolfgang Qluinger, in Wappen von Hamburg I (1980), suggests that the pair may have been more or less replicas of the Dutch ship Aemilia. If this is so, Leopoldus Primus would have had a length of about 130 feet and a width of almost 36 feet. To get over the shoals in the river Elbe, the hull was probably built
after the Rotterdam form. The ship was elaborately decorated with Baroque carvings and sculptures. Wappen von Hamburg was started in 1667 and took service in She was used as an escort vessel on voyages to the Spitsbergen (a Norwegian archipelago in the Arctic Ocean then used as a whaling base). On October 10, 1683 while on the Cadiz rout fire broke out in the bow and spread throughout the ship. The ship exploded when the fire reached the arsenal. John has a good start on his 1:50 Corel kit model of Wappen von Hamburg. The basic hull has been completed and the first layer of planking done. The kit-supplied walnut was 2 X 4 mm and quite rough. He thought about adding the second layer of planking but since a lot of filler was required to get it to this point he plans to just sand it smooth and paint the hull. The fittings supplied with the kit are rough at best. Many are one sided and the gun carriages are pot metal and have oval wheels. John has developed a template to place the gun ports all at the same height above the deck. C. W. Lawrence / Californian Brooke Robbins The 144-ton revenue cutter Cornelius W. Lawrence was built by William Easby at Washington D.C. in One of the seven new cutters ordered by the United States Revenue Marine, Lawrence was 96.5 feet long with a 24 foot beam. Launched August 20, 1848, the new cutter, rigged as a brig, was armed with five cannons; two 32 pounder guns, two six pounders, and one 18 pounder, later removed. Lawrence, commanded by Capt. Alexander Fraser, who until then had been commandant of the Revenue Marine, was to sail to the Pacific, where she was to be the first Revenue Marine cutter in California, extending American customs and revenue laws to that recently acquired territory. Lawrence sailed from Hampton Roads Virginia on October 15, 1848 for California. After a long voyage by way of Cape Horn, with stops at Rio de Janeiro, Valparaiso, and Honolulu, Lawrence arrived at San Francisco on October 31, (Information supplied by Brooks, to be continued). The Melbourne Smith designed topsail schooner Californian was built in San Diego, launched in 1984 and based on the United States Revenue Marine cutter Lawrence. On July 23, 2003, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed Bill No. 965, making her the official state tall ship of California. Originally commissioned by the Nautical Heritage Society, she has flown the flag of California up and down the coast and in ports ranging from Hawaii, Mexico, and the East Coast. Originally built and operated as a sailing school vessel based in Newport Beach. She also represented the state at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. The Maritime Museum of San Diego acquired Californian from the Nautical Heritage Society in June 2002 through a grant from the Sheila Potiker Family Foundation of San Diego. The California Coastal Conservancy provided the Maritime Museum of San Diego with a $300, grant to complete restoration of the Californian in February After
the overhaul was completed in August 2003 Californian returned to providing sail training and sea educational programs up and down the California coast. (Wikipedia) Brooke has produced a 1:24 scale hull to be used as a plug for a fiberglass mold. The eventual model will be a FRP hull for a remote-controlled model of the Lawrence or the Californian. The project started about a year ago as a Styrofoam mock-up and has evolved into its current form. The hull is made from a very robust plank on bulkhead framework and then planked over with strip wood. The topsides have been filled, sanded and painted, complete with the headrails, wales and gunports positioned on the bulwarks. Below the waterline the plug has been coppered with nail detail on the plates but with no overlapping. The idea here is to have the detail visible in the mold but hopefully not too much so that the plates will not be pulled off the plug when the two are separated.

Mayflower Group By Don Dressel Old Salts in Port: Steve Jones, John Bakker, Don Dressel, Tom Stellar, and Don Leyman Ships in Port: Le Real, Wappen von Hamburg, HMS Pegasus The Mayflower Group meeting was, as usual, very comfortable and relaxing for the few modelers who attended the meeting this month. It is still relatively surprising for me to realize that more SMA members are not taking advantage of the opportunity to attend there meetings a LOT of modeling procedures are discussed and questions answered for those modelers who attend. John was first up as he discussed his efforts on building the Wappen von Hamburg, a large ship of the line. There were a lot of problems discussed with the planking of this model, particularly since it is supposed to be single planked (John indicated he is going to double plank the model, since he is having major difficulties with the single planking and the material supplied in the kit for the planking. There are major problems with the gun port locations. John has obtained a lot of information and advice from other modelers who are building this model over the Internet. John also indicated that the plans are not correct, apparently, with regard to the gun port locations in the forward bulkhead. There are also problems with the mounting of the cannons on the ship as well as the poor gunport carriages supplied in the kit some of wheels on the gunport carriages are oval instead of round, as an example. There are also many questions regarding the location of the hawseholes in the bow as well as the bow gunport locations. Are the gunports in the stern correct? John also indicated that the figures supplied in the kit do not match the figures shown on the plans of the ship as supplied by the kit. There are also weird head timbers as far as John is concerned. There are, apparently, a lot of problems with this kit, but fortunately John has had a LOT of experience building ship models, so hopefully everything will work out. Don was next up with a discussion of his new project, the Spanish galley Le Real. This is a Dusek plank on frame kit model made in Spain, which is a new kit manufacturer as far as Don is concerned. So far, the kit is very well done with plenty of strength added to the structure, but the usual instructions are sadly lacking this is NOT a kit of a modeler who has never built a model ship before. The instructions, as an example, tell you to plank the deck, then plank the hull as indicated in the plans but you are not
told HOW to do this. Don also discovered that the plans, which at first appeared to be lacking, were really all there. Plan #5 and Plan #6 were back to back on the same piece of paper a first. As the old saying goes so far, so good. Don Leyman discussed his progress on his ongoing scratch built model of the HMS Pegasus. Don has made great strides in his carving of the figurehead for the model as well as his ongoing efforts to rig the model. He is now working on the bowsprit rigging, having decided to follow David Antscherl s method of rigging from the mizzen to the main to the fore yards, then the bowsprit. He lower masts are in and shrouds and stays installed. Don has done a beautiful job on the crowsfeet and the Euphroe. See the photos here.
Dolphin Royal Don Dressel Continuing progress on the French ship of the line Dolphin Royal by Tony Devroude, an honorary member of the SMA, is shown below with three recent pictures. Tony will not be able to give a monthly progress report each month, as he will be busy building a set of kitchen cabinets for a neighbor, but once done he will continue to work primarily on the carvings. The pictures below are: upper left, the planking of the Main Gun Deck. White Peroba is the lightwood; Blackbean is the dark wood indicating the binding strakes. Upper right: showing the vertical electrical chase to deliver wiring for the lights and cameras to the various decks. It is held within a plastic straw painted wood color that will hide behind the main stairway. Electrical goes upward to the beams below the decks, then outward, through the beam to the horizontal raceway feeding the LED lights and camera. The lower photo shows some of the 35 lb cannons being cast in wax. The next step is to cast them in brass. There are 32 piercings for cannon on the Main Gun Deck. There are 28 cannon. The photo also shows the carved cannon master, which has been set upon a prototype for the carriage. The ship has 102 cannon. It will really be interesting to see this model at the upcoming NRG Conference in Las Vegas in October to see how all the parts come together and view the model with all the wiring installed and hidden so that it could not be seen. Needless to say, the many carvings will be a real highlight, since the French ships of the line of this period were heavily ornamented with a LOT of exquisite carvings.
SMA Membership dues are due! It is that time of year again the dues are due. For those who do not know, we do have to pay for the meeting location where our monthly meetings are held, so there is a cost involved for the privilege of being able to show our Works in Progress and enjoy the ambiance of our fellow SMA members. The regular dues cost for members is $ For those few members who still receive their newsletter by snail mail, the cost is $ For those members who live beyond 100 miles, the cost is $ All checks should be made out to the SMA or you may pay by cash to our treasurer, Larry Van Es. For long distance members, the address is: Ship Modelers Association, Yorba Linda Blvd., suite G234, Yorba Linda, CA International Convention of Model Ship Building There will be a ship model convention in France this coming October 17 through October 21 in Rochefort, France. More details will be forthcoming in future issues of the SMA Newsletter and a separate flyer will be sent to all SMA members and associates at the same time as this newsletter. Stay tuned for more details. NRG Conference in Las Vegas The NRG Conference will be in Las Vegas, Nevada, October 26 th & 27 th and there is no conflict with the International Convention is France above, so any SMA member who desires will be able to attend both conferences. SMA Treasurer s Report The latest notice from our esteemed collector and keeper of funds for the SMA has indicated last month that the current balance is $5, with additional funds slowly coming in from the dues being paid by SMA members. There is some discussion now about what to do with the large balance of funds now in our account. There will be more to follow in the future. The board has suggested a picnic. Those attending the next SMA meeting will learn more. San Diego Ship Modelers Guild For those SMA members who may be interested, the San Diego Ship Modelers Guild now has their meetings on the Berkley on the second Tuesday of each month. Your editor and reporter routinely attend the meeting that is usually very informative and enlightening.
