WORK IN PROGRESS February Reporter: Dave Yotter HMS Bellona 1760 Chris Carl HMS Bellona was a 74-gun Bellonaclass third-rate ship of the line of the Royal Navy. Designed by Sir Thomas Slade, she was a prototype for the iconic 74-gun ships of the latter part of the 18 th century. Her particulars were: Tons burthen: 1615 bm (British measurement); Length: 168 ft. on the gundeck and 138 ft. keel; Beam: 47 ft.; draught: 21 ft.; Depth of hold: 20 ft.; Complement: 650 officers and men; Armament: lower gundeck: 28 X 32 pounders; upper gundeck 28 X 18 pounders; QD: 14 X 9 pounders; Fc: 4 X 9 pounders. During the Seven Years War Bellona left to join the squadron blockading Brest on 8 April She was later detached to patrol off the Tagus River in Spain, and on 13 August, while sailing with the frigate Brilliant, she sighted the French 74-gun ship Courageux in company with two frigates. The British ships pursued, and after 14 hours, caught up with the French ships and engaged at the Action of 14 August 1761, the Brilliant attacking the frigates, and Bellona taking on the Courageux. The frigates eventually got away, but the Courageux struck her colors, and was later repaired and taken into the Royal Navy. In 1762 Bellona was paid off and did not see action again until 1780, during the American Revolutionary War. She was coppered at this time, one of the first British ships to receive this treatment. Until 1783 she cruised in the North Sea and the West Indies and participated in reliefs of Gibraltar. (Wikipedia) Chris is making progress on the HMS Bellona. It is being built from a plank on bulkhead Corel kit in 1:100 scale. All bulkhead frames are installed on the keel and the main, forecastle and the poop decks are in place. Also installed are the decks in the great cabin and head areas. The first layer of hull planking is now completed including the gun port openings. Chris is now ready to tackle the final layer of planking and wants to have these planks laid down with no nails or mechanical fasteners needed. A discussion took place on different methods of plank bending including dry heat, steaming, water soak, water soak with dry heat or microwaving and maybe a few others. The final layer of planking will
be walnut and it was recommended that several of the methods be tried to see which works best for the particular wood supplied with this kit. Chris Carl s HMS Surprise Bob Penikas Chris Carl was definitely surprised when he found that the subject of the framed painting by Bob was note other than his recently completed model of HMS Surprise. The painting is acrylic on an 11 X 14 inch canvas panel. For this subject, Bob again used a seagull s eye view similar to the one used for his painting of the brig Pilgrim at the Dana Paint Maritime Institute. He likes this view because most ship paintings are near waterline views of the sides, bow on or of the fantail something different. Doing the model with the grey background helped show off the contrast between the black standing rigging and the white running rigging which would have been lost otherwise. And the white sea gull became on albatross for similar reasons. Working from friends pictures of Surprise looking down into the guts of the model raised questions as to an items shape or identity. Is the pictured dark spot metal, wood or rope? To decipher questionable areas of the reference photo, heavy computer and Photoshop use was necessary to enlarge, lighten and add contrast. In one case a dark blob turned out to be one of the ship s guns. Dutch Fluyt Derfflinger Don Dressel Don is continuing the masting and rigging of the fluyt Derfflinger that has been an ongoing project for the last couple of months. Most of the spars are installed now with the exception of the lateen yard. Further progress was made in the days following the SMA meeting with are indicated in the Mayflower Group session later in this newsletter. All the running rigging is up and commencement will now start with the lifts and braces once the lateen yard has been installed and rigged. The main challenge has been the lack of masting and rigging instructions, which has been compensated by the books already mentioned in a previous article last month. A fluyt is a Dutch type of sailing originally designed by the shipwrights of Hoorn as a dedicated cargo vessel. Originating in the Dutch Republic in the 16 th century, the vessel was designed to facilitate transoceanic delivery with the maximum of space and crew efficiency. Unlike rivals, it was not built for conversion in wartime to a warship, so it was cheaper to build and carried twice the cargo, and could be handled by a smaller crew.
Construction by specialized shipyards using new tools made it half the cost of rival ships. These factors combined to sharply lower the cost of transportation for Dutch merchants, giving them a major competitive advantage. The fluyt was a significant factor in the 17 th century rise of the Dutch seaborne empire. In 1670 the Dutch merchant marine totaled 568,000 tons of shipping about half the European total. The standard fluyt design minimized or completely eliminated its armaments to maximize available cargo space and used block and tackle extensively to facilitate ship operations. Another advantage of its pear-shape (when viewed from fore and aft) was a shallow draft, which allowed the vessel to bring cargo in and out of ports and down rivers that other vessels could not reach. This ship class was credited in enhancing Dutch competitiveness in international trade and was widely employed by the Dutch East India Company in the 17 th and 18 th centuries. However, its usefulness caused the fluyt to gain such popularity that similar designs were soon developed by seagoing of the Dutch. For example, the English shipbuilding industry began to adapt the design of the fluyt during the later part of the 17 th century as English merchants, seeing how much cheaper the Dutch shipping was, acquired Dutch-built ships that were captured in the Anglo-Dutch wars. (Wikipedia). 1:48 Scale Anchor Guy Bell Guy brought in a pair of anchors that were assembled from a mini-kit supplied by the Syren Ship Model Company. The anchors are parts designed for the kit of the English Revenue Cutter Cheerful of 1806 and can be purchased as a separate mini-kit of two anchors for $7.50. Kit instructions include the following: Mini-kit of laser cut parts to assemble the two anchors for the Cutter Cheerful. All parts are cut from boxwood. Anchor ring is included. Anchor is 2 ¼ long (58mm) not including the anchor ring. The assembly is quite self-explanatory but I would note that the laser char should be removed from each piece first and then the two main pieces glued together without the flukes/palms. This makes it easier to sand the bevels in accordance to the drawing above. The shank is more or less an octagon and using an emery board, files or sandpaper to shape it like the drawing in the gallery is advertised. Then the palm/flukes are added and shaped along with the very points, which need some attention. Make sure all the joints are tight and any cracks are filled. Sand it with a fine 320-grit sandpaper before painting black. Black trap or even paper strips can be used to create the iron bands around the anchor stock. You may have to deepen the laser cut notch for the shank on each anchor stock piece so it leaves the correct sized air space between them. Making all the parts from boxwood should make the thin anchor sections quite durable. Syren has a multitude of such kits and findings available and is an excellent place to go when searching for substandard parts found in many large ship model kits. Parts include rigging blocks in both rope and internally strapped versions deadeyes, open and
closed hearts, rope, gratings, gun barrels and truck carriages, ship s wheels, elm tree pumps, cleats, gunport hinges and the list goes on. The offerings of excellent ship and boat kits are expanding also. Check them out at USS Constitution Paul Payne and built than standard frigates of the period. USS Constitution is a three-masted heavy frigate of the United States Navy, named by President George Washington after the Constitution of the United States of America. She is the world s oldest commissioned naval vessel still afloat. Constitution was launched in 1797, one of six original frigates authorized for construction by the Naval Act of 1794 and the third constructed. Joshua Humphreys designed the frigates to be the young Navy s capital ships, and so Constitution and her sisters were larger and more heavily armed Her particulars were: Tonnage: 1,576, Displacement: 2,200 tons, Length: 207 ft. billet head to taffrail, 175 ft. at waterline, Beam: 43 ft., Height: mainmast: 220 ft., Draft: 221 ft. forward 23 ft. aft, Depth of hold: 14 ft., Sail plan: 42,710 sq. ft. on three masts, Speed: 13 knots, Complement: 450 including 55 Marines and 30 boys, Armament: 30 X 24-pounder long guns, 14 X 12-pounder guns, 2 X 24 pounder bow chasers. Paul is continuing construction of his scratch built 1:96 scale model of USS Constitution in her as-built configuration, ca Paul has been doing a lot of reworking of the spar deck, bulwarks and stern configuration. The ship will have open rails with hammock netting forward with a solid bulwark aft. Substantial reworking of the spar deck is well underway. This is being done over a 1/64 aircraft ply sub deck. The headworks and stern configuration can then be completed. The gundeck armament is in place and currently there will be no gunport covers. A small repair was needed in the coppering and the coppering patina is looking good. The repair plates were made from stained glass copper strip with detail added using a ponce wheel. Ideal Small Cruiser John Simmons The design is based on an article on WoodenBoat Magazine about a 13-foot gaffrigged micro cruiser for sailing on the Great Lakes, not the ocean, but with a few amenities. I chose to do a similar vessel with all required elements for weekend cruising, or a week or two, yet spacious enough to day sail with up to five guests plus the one-man crew. The hull form is similar to a Cape Cod Cat, a legendary sailor built since the 1800 s and still built and available today. But a cat is limited in its ability to point into the wind whereby a job on a sloop corrects that limitation. The designer of Laurentia has created a clean design incorporating hard chines, a kick-up centerboard and rudder, a traveler, jib furling and the potential use of a jenny to complete the details. A hinged foot at the base of
the mast would allow trailering. A 3.4 HP Mercury motor is shown with an extended shaft and both it and a propane tank are stowed under the cockpit seat and plumed to the burner inboard. The beam is generous to allow a wide berth of almost four feet per person at the aft end and two feet forward and seat and seatback foam cushions are shown. A porta-potty within an enclosed head, a galley with a double burner, sink with water supply and waste collection, storage for cooking gear and service items, and a table that doubles as a cushion support between the seating to either side, and finally a drop-in cavity for a cold chest of 32-quart size. Lighting would consist of battery-powered individual fixtures. Outboard fuel would be stored aft under the cockpit seating, as well as the outboard motor, safety fear, oar, line, etc. The cockpit table doubles as the hatch closure and is vertically retained by runners to either side. Overhead is a sliding hatch cover that permits standing while preparing a meal. Headroom otherwise is about 5 8. The hull is constructed of plywood with glass over a style called clinker built. Long sheets of ply are required ad a pattern for four pieces edge overlap over the full length per side. The pieces are oddly shaped but determine the hull shape and chines. The deck and deckhouse are domed and the cockpit is flat-wrapped in two-dimensions. The cockpit and cabin sole are below the waterline slightly, thereby preventing thru-hull draining and selfbailing. The rigging seems standard and traditional but has a clever design for the topsail (or Trysail). To allow a clean and smooth foil shape to that sail, its attaché spar is flipped from right to left side over the gaff topping lift, thereby allowing the desired shape on both tacks. This arrangement is referred to as WTF ( what the flip ), a local phrase, I assume. At only 18 4 in length and a bam of 8 4, this craft should sail well and be trailerable, safe at sea and look traditional as well. HMS Bounty 1787 Brian Stein The voyage out: On 23 December 1787, the Bounty sailed from Spithead for Tahiti. For a full month, the crew attempted to take the ship around Cape Horn, but adverse weather prevented this. Bligh then proceeded east, rounding the southern tip of Africa (Cape Agulhas) and crossing the width of the Indian Ocean. During the outward voyage, Bligh demoted Sailing Master John Fryer, replacing him with Fletcher Christian. This act seriously damaged the relationship between Bligh and Fryer, and Fryer later claimed that Bligh s act was entirely personal. Bligh is commonly portrayed as the epitome of abusive sailing captains, but this portrayal has recently come into dispute. Caroline Alexander points out in her 2003 book The Bounty that Bligh was relatively lenient compared with other British naval officers. Bligh enjoyed the patronage of Sir Joseph Banks, a wealthy botanist and influential figure in Britain at the time. That, together with his experience sailing with Cook, familiarity with navigation in the area, and lock customs was probably important factors in his appointment.
The Bounty reached Tahiti on 26 October 1788, after ten months at sea. Bligh and his crew spent five months in Tahiti, then called Otaheite, collecting and preparing 1,015 breadfruit plants to be transported. Bligh allowed the crew to live ashore and care for the potted breadfruit plants, and they became socialized to the customs and culture of the Tahitians. Many of the seamen and some of the young gentlemen had themselves tattooed in native fashion. Master s Mate and Acting Lieutenant Fletcher Christian married Maimiti, a Tahitian woman. Others of the Bounty s warrant officers and seamen were also said to have formed connections with native women. After five months in Tahiti, the Bounty set sail with her breadfruit cargo on 4 April (Wikipedia) cover the belaying points. Brian is building his model of Bounty in 1:60 scale from an Amati kit. The hull is now completed, as are the decks. Deck furniture including the windlass, bitts, pin rails and gallery stack, hatches, hatch covers and gratings. The ship s wheel is in place and rigged to the tiller. The Bounty s launch is securely lashed to her cradle. Channels are in place and ready for the chains and deadeyes. The bulwark pin rails have received their belaying pins and are ready for the rigging to start except that Brian is concerned that the kit instructions do not Catalan Ship, NAO Bill Schultheis Bill is proceeding on his Nao of ca in 1:30 scale. The model is being built from a Woody Joe kit. He is now finished with the planking which is really a strip wood veneer being applied over the initial layer of planking. Due to the roundness of the hull this was challenging in the ends of the initial layer of planking. The technique that worked the best was to coat both surfaces with Tightbond, let them dry and then use a hot iron to bond the strips down to the hull. The second layer of planking is now finished. Bill hasn t been pleased with the glossy finish produced by the initial oil varnish and set about removing it. At first he tried sanding and that didn t work well and ended up scraping off the old finish with a chisel. A couple of places were sanded through the outside layer of planking and he is now trying to figure out how to repair and/or hide the problem areas. The forecastle deck has been added and the lower poop deck has been completed. Some of the mast work on the lower mast is ready and Bill is working out how to laser cut some of the parts for the top. 8 a little more conventional featuring a longer delta like wing aft with a canard forward. In this case the single engine nacelle rotated out of the rear top of the main wing and featured a more standard tricycle landing gear. The engine(s): Rotax 582 is a 48 kw (64hp) two stoke, twocylinder, rotary intake valve, oil-in-fuel or oil injection pump, liquid-cooled, gear reduction-drive aircraft engine. Johns also showed a couple of mini air ships, designs that may be submitted as entries to a NASA/Boing contest. The design requirements are that the aircraft must transport one person 46 miles and be able to take off and land both vertically and horizontally. John had two designs. The first had twin nacelles that would rotate to both vertical and horizontal positions with appropriate landing gear changes for each position. The craft featured a canard and V tail with short wings inboard and rotating with the nacelles. The second design looked Um John? What about the engine manufacturer s warning about the engines design being subject to sudden stoppage..?

Mayflower Group By Don Dressel Old Salts in Port: Steve Jones, John Bakker, Don Dressel, Tom Stellar, Guy Bell. Ships in Port: Wappon von Hamburg, Derfflinger. The Mayflower Group meeting was, as usual, very comfortable and relaxing for all those who attended the meeting, however, the attendance was very sparse probably due to the Winter Olympics being on television and/or other sports events. For those who did not attend, there was a lot of goodies given away by John from his years of building models and collecting things as well as a lot of extra parts and other items he obtained from the recently closed hobby shop near his home. There were a LOT of ship model spare parts such as ships gangways (ladders) in various sizes, deadeyes in packages, blocks, both stropped and non-stropped in packages of single and double, chains in many sizes, rigging line, blued small nails, and other items. He had brought some of these items to the SMA meeting last Wednesday, but there were more now. There was also the usual conversations and discussion on various nautical items of interest to the group while enjoying the great coffee and cookies that John always has at his home for the group. As a sideline, it is always great to see Happy, Johns small dog, at the meetings. Happy loves to be petted by everyone (and looks for cookie crumbs from everyone). John started off the official meeting with his presentation of the work he has already done on the Woppen van Hamburg. Although he just obtained the kit last month, he has already reached the stage where the hull is partially planked. John did tell us that the frames are too far apart as supplied with the kit and the hull itself is only single planked. The planking material supplied in the kit appears to be walnut, is very thick and, as a result, is very hard to bend even with soaking in water. The wales are even thicker (3mm X 8mm). John indicated that a suggestion was offered on the Internet to cut the wales supplied in the kit in half, making them approximately 3mm X 4mm, and gluing them together to form the 8mm width, which lends itself to bending. The planking was a slow process, but John also indicated that if you mess up on the single planking, you could always plank it again (double plank), as is done with a lot of other ship model kits. He was also short on carriages for the guns, but you will not see the carriages on the lower deck anyway, since it will be covered. He forgot to install the hawsehole and gammoning hole that he has to complete now. He filled in a lot of the spaces before planking with balsa wood to assist in the planking process. The scale of the model is 1/50, so it is a large model and he is not sure he is going to rig it, since if he did, it would be five feet tall. Although the kit is labeled as Corel, it was at one time a Movo kit model (no longer in business), since some of the parts supplied in the kit
are labeled Movo. John thinks it is an old kit, probably offered for sale around 1979 or thereabouts. It is still available from Corel, but just what the kit is composed of today is a question mark. John also briefly showed us some of his scowl work, which he also works on in his spare time. These three figures are his band comprised of a drummer and two guitar players as indicated by the attached photo. John is multitalented. Don was next up with his continuing efforts to rig the Derfflinger. He has made progress but has also decided, for a number of reasons, to NOT install the sails and sail rigging to the model. It has been fun to install the standing rigging, which is now complete. The yards are now completed with the installation of the lateen yard, which proved to be a very difficult (but fun) item to install. The parrell, in particular, was a challenge to install since it included a deadeye as part of the parrell assembly. Note the parrell in the photo attached along with the line from the parrell that was not cut off from the belaying pin. Don now has all the spars installed and the necessary rigging already complete on the lateen yard, so lifts and braces have yet to be installed. Once the lifts and braces are completed, there only remains the installation of the flags to complete the model. There is one more photo of the model shown which indicates the size of the model. This will require a plexi case to be made to order once the model is completed, then exactly what will happen with the model is up in the air. There is no longer any space available in my home for another model of this size, so hopefully some museum will find space for it in their collection. It is a unique model there are not very many fluit models in maritime museums here in the U.S., if any. Maybe that is just wishful hoping on Don s part. Stay tuned for any announcement in the next few months as to the eventual resting place for the Derfflinger. Don never thought that he would reach a point where there was no more room for his ship models! It is interesting to note that the fluit type ship was square rigged but had only a lower course and topsail no topgallant sail. A reduced crew was paramount for this type of ship with a large cargo capacity. Again, details can be obtained from the book 17 th Century Dutch Merchant Ships by Ab Hoving from
Visit to the USS Midway By Don Dressel While attending the Ship Modelers Guild meeting in San Diego, Dave Yotter and I decided to leave early in the day in order to visit the USS Midway, which is based in San Diego and open to the public as a museum. The ship is docked only a few hundred feet from the Maritime Museum of San Diego so is an easy walk. It accomplishes two modeling venues, that of a ship and also planes and helicopters. The picture shown to the left is of the aircraft carrier USS Midway, which is no longer in commission but was, for a long period of time, stationed in Japan as part of the U.S. fleet there. When first boarding the vessel, you enter into the lower hanger deck, which houses a number of planes and other things of interest for Naval personnel. If, when you were in the U.S. Navy, you happened to be in the aviation field, this is a must see for you. The picture below the one of the USS Midway shows Dave Yotter on the hanger deck alongside one of the planes displayed. Note the theater behind Dave that is very interesting. There are many other things to see aboard the ship including several tours of the vessel that you can see as well as a fine gift shop at the stern. There are also a number of ship models (aircraft carriers, of course) on display near the end of the hanger deck close to the gift shop. Food, if desired, can also be purchased, although Dave and I did not visit the food area. Going topside to the flight deck, as shown in the next photo, you see many more planes. There is also several demonstrations of flight techniques and takeoffs given by knowledgeable individuals that both Dave and I found very informative and interesting. A tour is available of the island structure where all the action is as far as ship and flight control are concerned. The presentation of the flight launching techniques and operational procedures is of great interest and gives you some idea of the complexity and precision required to accomplish the task of launching planes from the carrier. The demonstrator did comment that the pilot of the plan, once launched from the carrier, had better know how to fly his plane, since he is essentially shot
off the flight deck. Comments were also made concerning the noise level on the flight deck while launching procedures were under way everything was done via hand signals. On the way back to the Maritime Museum of San Diego, having completed the visit to the USS Midway, Dave and I stopped off to grab something to eat at a restaurant across the street from the museum, since the eating establishment we used to patronize is being remodeled. After our meal, we both enjoyed the setting sun and views of the Star of India and the ships berthed at the museum next to the Berkeley. The sun was at a perfect angle to highlight the sails of the Star of India (see photos) and the ships behind the Berkeley. Once back to the Museum, we attended the San Diego Ship Modeler s Guild meeting that is always a lot of fun. The SMA had the privilege of having some of the San Diego Guild members attend our SMA meeting last month.
Dolphin Royal Don Dressel Last month I reported the progress Tony Devroude, an honorary member of the SMA, is making on his construction of the French ship model Dolphin Royal. As I indicated in the previous article, Tony is going to bring the model to the upcoming NRG Conference in Las Vegas this coming October. As a result, Tony has decided to send me photos of the progress he is making on the continuing construction of the model. He plans to install one camera per deck with each deck lighted by LED lights installed in selected deck beams. Tony has come up with a unique method of treating the LED lamps. They are glazed over with garnet shellac (dark orange) topped with a coat of acrylic Rembrandt Red mixed with gloss extender. This gives a light like an oil light lamp. With the additional dimmers, things should look like the real thing. The camera he is using for the photos he took shown to the left is a high definition color camera that focuses from 6 to infinity. He obtained the camera from Micro-Mark. Tony was very impressed with the sharpness of the resulting images. Tony also indicated that there will be several hundred carved figures inside the ship once he is done. There will also be the ornate carvings on the outside of the ship, of course. The top picture above shows the model under construction with from the perspective of the bow both the exterior and interior planking are shown as well as the wire leading to the LED lights if you look closely. The wires will be hidden from view once the model id complete. The second view shows the work being done on the orlop deck with the card players and barrels in the hold. There are also two other figures, one carrying a barrel and the other a sack. In
addition, you can see the carpenters walk at the upper left. As a side note, Tony indicated that this deck is called the Faux Deck in France. Also note that the deck (floor) planking is changeable per the holds requirements. The next photo, to the left, again shows the Orlop Deck (Faux Deck) along with the beam work for the main deck beginning. According to Tony, the camera is under the beams on the right. You can also see the wires on the extreme right that feed the LED lights installed in the main deck beams. The photo on the lower left shows the detail of the planking. Tony indicates that the French used one nail and one treenail per futtock when planking. I am looking forward to more photos of the work in progress that Tony is completing as he prepares the model for the upcoming NRG Conference. I have intentionally made the photos as large as possible so you can see the fine detail and effort that is going into this model. It will definitely be something to see at the upcoming conference. Tony is also going to complete a talk on carving procedures, so all should make plans to be there! The NRG Conference is always fun!
SMA Membership dues are due! It is that time of year again the dues are due. For those who do not know, we do have to pay for the meeting location where our monthly meetings are held, so there is a cost involved for the privilege of being able to show our Works in Progress and enjoy the ambiance of our fellow SMA members. The regular dues cost for members is $ For those few members who still receive their newsletter by snail mail, the cost is $ For those members who live beyond 100 miles, the cost is $ All checks should be made out to the SMA or you may pay by cash to our treasurer, Larry Van Es. For long distance members, the address is: Ship Modelers Association, Yorba Linda Blvd., suite G234, Yorba Linda, CA International Convention of Model Ship Building There will be a ship model convention in France this coming October 17 through October 21 in Rochefort, France.
