1 a little dinghy March 8, 2010 Gold Country Yacht Club Volume 32, Issue 3 Special Interest Articles: Living the dream America's Cup Meeting minutes Individual Highlights: Membership 2 America's Cup 3 Minutes 5 Sea Scout reunion 6 Classifieds 7 From Your Commodore Ahoy Crew, Well, it won't be long now! With spring less than three weeks away and Sail Expo just around the corner it's time to get ready for the 2010 sailing season. While we dream of sailing far away ports, don't forget the friends you've made along the way. Last month I introduced you to some of our new amigos from cruising. When we started cruising we didn't realize how many new friends we would make. Now, I don't mean just acquaintances, I mean real life-long friendships. The refreshing thing about these new friends is that everyone who actually makes it out and really goes cruising has had the same dream and has made similar sacrifices to get there. All of a sudden everyone is sharing that same dream. There seems to be the life before cruising, the cruising life, and then the life after cruising. The life before cruising isn't all that important because now you're there cruising and living the dream. This dream has brought everyone together: doctor, lawyer, engineer, carpenter, waitress etc., you name it. Regardless where you came from, we are now all in the same boat. Although our boats are every different size and shape we are all sharing the same anchorages on the same oceans and most important we're sharing the same dream. Imagine a great, dreamy night's sleep only to awake and find that you are now living the dream. Some days the first mate and I would have to pinch each other just to make sure we really were awake. The friendships you make out cruising are refreshing and its those sacrifices we all made that make us one. Cruising is a life-style and therefore we are known as Cruisers. The rest of the world thinks of us as sailors, which we are, but the cruiser wanders with the migration of the seasons; he is not on a schedule and is ready to help his fellow cruiser at any hour of the day. The cruising community is what I envision life was like before the industrial revolution and the take over of the corporate world. When you're out there you'll be reminded of the corporate world every time a Mega-yacht pulls into a peaceful anchorage unloads their jet skis and doesn't give a shit about the people residing there. No worries though as they will be leaving soon. They have to get back work so they can take on more fuel.

I was starting to drift there. When you get right down to it, its about the sailing and it is about the dream but when you get there it'll be more about the people. After this realization from our first season of cruising, we decided that our next season would start off with the Baja Ha Ha (no reason to wait meeting the folks). Most of the people you'll meet on that first trip south will migrate together with the Ha Ha and then you'll be crossing paths and sharing with each other from then on. Life here at the Gold Country Yacht Club is a lot like the cruising lifestyle. We all have a common interest that has brought us together and we can all share the dream in our own way. I can't wait till we're all rafted up at Scott's Flat in the cove telling stories and having a cold one because after all it's five o'clock somewhere. Let's raft up at Richard's boat! Port Captain David Niedziejko wbuti@yahoo.com Race Chairman Jerry Lewis jml@usamedia.tv Newsletter Editor Ken Neely ken@wingandwing.net I'll drink to that! Toasting our new Amigos! Rafting up with some of our new amigos! Fair Winds Amigos! From your commodore Joe Day Daydreams, Pearson 385 Sailing Education Don Hare donhare@surewest.net Melinda's Membership Memos I would like to remind everyone that membership dues should be paid. If paid before March 31st it is $65.00 but after this date it is $ The forms are online and I will have them available at our next meeting March 10th at Larry and Lenas. Also, available at this meeting for sale will be Burgee stickers and license plate frames. I will be placing an order for name tags for our new members. Has anyone lost or in need of replacement GCYC badge? Let me know and I can order extra ones for a small fee. We are working on 2010 membership cards and they should be ready soon. See everyone on the 10th.

3 Page 3 of 8 a little dinghy New Member Bio The Schippers' Our names are Skip (Gerald) & Janet Schippers. Some of you may have met us at the GCYC Christmas party. Our first sailboat was a Catalina 27 in about Her name was "Lyric II." We sailed the Delta for about a year, learning, scaring ourselves & running aground a few times until we got tired of tacking back & forth. We then sailed down to the bay & got a slip at Marina Village Harbour in Alameda. After a couple of years, we decided to upgrade to a Catalina 30 "Captain Bligh." We had lots of fun sailing the bay. Three years ago we bought an Islander 36 named "Rasberry Tart" & quickly changed her name to "Andiamo" ("Let's go" in Italian). Since then we have sailed as far north as Tomales Bay & Bodega Bay, out to the Farallons & south to Santa Cruz & Monterey. Each summer we try to take an ocean trip. In between times, we've chartered in the BVI twice & once in Tahiti. This winter we're looking forward to chartering in St. Martin. Has anyone does this trip? We'd love some pointers. When we're not sailing, we work for American Airlines & University of the Pacific & live 1/2 time in Stockton & 1/2 time in Volcano (soon to be full time). We "found" GCYC when Jan ran into Tish & Wayne Buti at our 40th high school reunion last fall. We're looking forward to honing our skills at the club activities this summer! Each summer we try to take an ocean trip. In between times, we've chartered in the BVI twice & once in Tahiti. This winter we're looking forward to chartering in St. Martin. America's Cup comes back to America By Jerry Lewis, Race Chairman In case you missed it (not shown on TV in America), the US has recaptured the America s Cup, winning the cup back with its second victory off the coast of Valencia, Spain on Valentines Day. After long, drawn out legal battles over the Deed of Gift that started this longest running sporting event, the 33rd America s Cup was contested by 90 water line multi-hulls. The Swiss defender Alinghi sailed a 120 overall (counting the bowsprit) catamaran, while the single US challenger BMW Oracle Racing (BOR) sailed a 90 trimaran equipped with a 190 rigid wing sail (80% larger than a 747 wing) in this special Deed of Gift Match. RACE 1 The first race saw starboard rights BOR aggressively attack Alinghi in the pre-start and got a penalty on Alinghi for failing to give room in their first dial up. Then BOR pushed Alinghi over the line and both stalled there before the start. Alinghi got going first and went back around the pin end to start. It was over a minute later before BOR managed to get their giant cat out of irons and over the line, now over 600 meters behind. But BOR sailed higher and faster upwind (20+ knots in 5-9 knots of breeze), passing Alinghi on the drag race to the first mark 20 miles upwind from the start, rounding the only turning mark on the course by 3:21. BOR 90 trimaran The lighter Alinghi with larger sails was expected to outperform the rigid foil wing and smaller head-sailed US boat on the downwind leg, but BOR stretched its lead, again faster (23 to 20 knots) and lower than the Swiss boat. The final delta was 15:28 after Alinghi completed its penalty turn.

4 a little dinghy Page 4 of 8 America's Cup (cont) PRO Harold Bennett had to enlist committee boat crew to help with timing and flags as the Swiss representatives on the race committee refused to start the second race, claiming the waves were too high (1 meter) RACE 2 For the second race, PRO Harold Bennett had to enlist committee boat crew to help with timing and flags as the Swiss representatives on the race committee refused to start the second race, claiming the waves were too high (1 meter). The BOR rep and a support boat driver assisted in the raising and lowering of the flags to complete the start sequence. Again, as in race 1, Alinghi incurred a penalty, this time for being in the pre-start area before the designated time. The boats never got close during the start with BOR starting on port ahead of Alinghi on starboard. But this time, Alinghi sailed faster and benefited from a 20-degree wind shift, putting them in the lead halfway to the windward mark on this triangle course. But after crossing in front of BOR (on the layline), they sailed a couple lengths beyond the layline before tacking and were now behind BOR. BOR stretched their lead at both the second and third marks, averaging 26 knots to Alinghi s 25 knots in 7-9 knots of breeze. The final delta was 5:26. List of the Herreshoff designed/built Cup defenders The America s Cup is now in California at the Golden Gate Yacht Club. The date and place for the 34 th America s Cup is still undetermined, but likely venues include San Francisco or San Diego bays and Rhode Island s Narragansett Bay. Speaking of Rhode Island, I visited the America s Cup Museum and the Herreshoff Marine Museum in Bristol, Rhode Island last fall. Outside the adjacent museums, the IACC yacht America 3 USA- 23, which successfully The Auld Mug and the Dingy Editor at Golden Gate YC The America s Cup is now in California at the Golden Gate Yacht Club. defended in 1992, sits out front, its 100 mast seen from miles around. The Herreshoff Marine Museum is stuffed with the history of the cup and of yacht designer Nathanael Herreshoff and his forty years of building and racing America s Cup yachts. The AC Museum was founded in 1992 by Halsey Herreshoff, a four-time Cup winner and grandson of the legendary yacht designer. Photos from the beginning of the prior century, many Herreshoff designed boats, and models of Cup boats line the walls, aisles, fill curio cabinets and hang from the ceiling.
