1 Gold Country Yacht Club a little dinghy Volume 25, Issue 5 Remember! The 25th annual Go for the Gold Regatta June 3 & June 4th Catalina 22 National Regatta June 17-22nd June This issue is dedicated to the 25th annual Go for the Gold Regatta. Enjoy the various perspectives, and photos. Above all, remember it is quite possibly the most visible activity presented by the Club to the community. It needs your support by volunteering in some capacity and it needs your participation to make it successful. Come join in the fun June 3rd & 4th. Call Pierre to volunteer or to reserve your dinner. Soundings From The Poop-deck Letters to the editor: Mike Hauser 749 Maltman Dr Grass Valley, CA Or send to: mike@gvblueprint.com Inside this issue: Soundings Jeff Lund Vice Commodore Chatelain 1 DON T FORGET THE MEETING THIS MONTH WILL BE AT THE CLUB HOUSE AT THE LAKE MAY 31st. I am excited about this year s Go for the Gold Regatta. Last night at the Board of Directors meeting it was reported that we now have over 40 boats registered and it looks like we may have as many as 60. That means that we ve got our work cut out for us. If you haven t signed up to help out please make sure that you do that at our meeting on Wednesday night. The competition should be exciting and from what I hear the winds have been favorable for a great race. Be sure to buy your tickets for the dinner on Saturday night. We are going to have a Caribbean theme this year with live music so we can dance into the night while enjoying the evening with friends. Let s tell the regatta committee what a great job they are doing, thanks Pierre, Mike, Jean, Pat & Bill. As you know we will be hosting the Catalina 22 Nationals this year and I have heard that we have had enough registered boats to pass the break even point, that s good new. Let s make sure to offer support to the planning team so that they will have a successful event too. Lynn, Dale, Tish, Wayne and Don the club appreciates your hard work as well as all the others who have been involved. Let us know how we can help. See ya at the regatta! Vice Commodore Pierre Chatelain Port Captain Membership Cruising Treasurer Bif Barf Sports Reporter Training More Racing Sign ups Minutes 9 If you have volunteered for the Regatta, YOU NEED TO BE at the next Club meeting. During the meeting, we will go through assignments based on what you have volunteered to do. This is the time for final questions and answers. Also, the Club is still IN NEED of: An additional Safety/Ferry Boat (a photographer will be on board) One person to help Hugh Talman with the Saturday night BBQ One person to help with Sunday Breakfast no cooking (Coffee, muffins, etc ) Four people to do the Sunday Lunch BBQ (Hot dogs, etc ) simple cooking. Out of the 76 positions required to make the Regatta a great event, the ones listed above are the only ones open. CONGRATULATIONS on pulling a great effort of volunteering and dedication to the Club and the sports of sailing!!

Only this year we have TWO regattas in two weeks so there s a lot of anxiety going about. I m hoping to have the barge project completed this weekend. Small glitches have held us up but not direly so. I hate being a brinkman. A word of warning to all trailer sailors: Check that trailer out for the summer! I took the opportunity to go over the bearings and brakes of my C-22 trailer and was surprised to find one brake completely down to the metal. I know it wasn t more than two seasons since checking it last too. I recall a friend s woeful tale of last summer s salmon trip to Ft. Bragg being consumed by replacing a trailer axle and we ve all seen those boats along the highway propped up on blocks with a wheel missing. Murphy s Law states the probability of a bearing failure goes up in direct proportion to the distance to a repair facility. Nuffsed. My final request is for some handyman to volunteer to assist in making a couple of dollies for the Sunfish. The recent course change by the board will make them a hot item this summer and Lynn has suggested we need a better dolly to transport them from the clubhouse to the water. There re some good models in the catalogs, which run $400 and up. I feel we can better that by a couple of hundred with a little ingenuity and elbow grease but could use a little help on this one. The project won t start until after the regattas. 3 Cruising News Cruise Chairman-Gary Wade Just a quick note to all you cruisers out there - feel free to join our other cruisers on the race course! The Go For The Gold Regatta is not just for the hardened, seasoned racers; those who normally cruise can also be superb racers! And, if racing is just not your cup of tea, be sure to turn out for the regatta and help your club make this 25th annual Go For The Gold the best regatta ever! See elsewhere in this special Regatta Edition newsletter for how to sign up to help - or race. Treasurer s Report Jean Cutshall In a little over one week is the 25 th Annual GO FOR THE GOLD REGATTA. As treasurer, I just want to encourage all of the members to come out and participate as this is a major fund raiser for the club. It also plans to be a lot of fun! All proceeds to go to benefit the club in many ways: the Junior Sailing program the Women s sailing seminar the weekly racing season keeping dues at a minimum Friendship Day Christmas party National Club memberships And this year, the Catalina 22 Nationals in our own lake! This event also gives us local recognition. Many local businesses and also sailing businesses in the Bay area look forward to helping us by sponsoring the Regatta in various ways. Let s all be out there to support the club and the long tradition of Sailing!

Grandmas & Grandpas, Be a hero (ine).an excellent way to spell the parents. June 24th-29th The Club Sponsored Catalina 22 National Regatta happens at Scotts Flat Lake June 17th -22nd. The best racing is Class racing. Every boat s the same with only skill, local knowledge, and luck on the winners side. You re likely to see very tight, close racing all around the course. Since it s so tight there s also lots of yelling about rights and rules and lineage at every mark. Get a good seat or better yet help out and enjoy the racing. Bif has a C note riding on can t say...the FEDS you know.ears everywhere.. Training... Lynn Buchanan Twenty years ago my daughters were in the first GCYC Junior Sailing Program and participated as crew in numerous Go For The Gold Regattas. Of course their favorite part about the Go For the Gold Regatta was the BBQ not the sailing. Kelly, my youngest came back from New Mexico last year in June to help our club with putting 12 juniors through our program. She was quite the helper because I was still limited by my heart and new knees. I have a picture of Kelly standing next to me as I sat in a chair at the end of the dock watching the juniors take off from the marina in their Sunfish that year. I was thinking about the circle of life and maybe someday one of the juniors from the 2005 class would be back at the docks teaching others. So many of the juniors from our program have moved into sailing either on the club boats, their own boats or with their parent(s). Christopher Palmer races his Laser, Carly Talman has a Sunfish and cruises Scotts Flat Lake with her husband, Christopher (Kit) Cowell has a Buccaneer he skippers when he can get it away from his dad David. Cameron Lewis sails an El Toro he purchased from the club. There are many others and I have vivid memories and warm feeling when I see them on the water, especially at the Go For The Gold Regattas. Sailynn

5 Racing News Race Chairman-Jerry Lewis It's Gold Country Regatta time for the 25th time. This will mark my 17th GCYC Regatta, but the first that I will NOT be racing in it. Instead, I'm helping on the RC barge, inputting the scores into a laptop as boats cross the finish line. Hopefully we'll know the standings as the RC barge docks each afternoon (barring any protests that could alter the preliminary on-the-water results) with little or no waiting for the trophies after the last race. Since I'm not out wet sanding Kudzu with 400 grit sandpaper as usual each night the week before the regatta, I thought I'd share some ramblings about the Gold Country Regatta, aka "Go For The Gold." Yes, we are known for our gold nugget-themed awards - it really is gold country here ya know. Second, third (and in larger fleets) fourth place trophies are various sizes of gold pans decorated with chunks of imitation gold (you didn't really think we glued peanut-shell sized nuggets on those pans?). The higher the finish, the bigger the pan. But the real prize is the real gold in small glass vials in local artisan crafted oak chests given to the top finisher in each fleet. The last few years there have been 8 or 9 fleets. And we've been lucky enough to keep most of that gold in the foothills from whence it came! But watch out, this could be the year most of the gold leaves town! We may have more out of town boats than usual, as we are seeing many more early entries (or could it be the "free T shirt with early entry" working?). Or maybe the Catalina 22 fleet looking toward their Nationals here two weeks later?

6 We re Pleased to announce our notification of race for the 25th annual Go For the Gold Regatta The Gold Country Yacht Club has staged it s Go For the Gold Regatta on Beautiful Scotts Flat Lake every Spring for 24 years. The Regatta supports our Junior Sailing program, a community outreach program open to all young people in Nevada County and the surrounding areas. In 24 years we ve exposed hundreds of kids to the sport and joys of sailing. Scotts Flat Lake is located 10 minutes from Gold Country s cities Nevada City and Grass Valley. We stage the Regatta in June because the water is turning warm, the days have yet to get hot, the nights cool down pleasantly, and the breeze pipes up to 10 or so knots just before race time like clockwork! Come on up and stay the weekend at the local Scotts Flat Lake Camp grounds, one of our local Bed and Breakfasts, the Holbrooke Hotel or the National Hotel ( the longest continually operating hotels in California), or one of our many fine overnight accommodations. We ll offer some really good BBQ and libations, a great silent auction with lots of bargains, story telling and yarns of old, all to accompany some fine, fun, competitive racing. I personally extend an invitation to you and your fellow Club members to enjoy our hospitality and help us celebrate 25 years of the Go For the Gold Regatta. Oh, and did I mention the trophies? You know...go for the GOLD.
