3 Commodore s Corner 3 Ahoy Mateys, Summer has arrived! Hopefully you have been able to take advantage of some of the best sailing on Scott s Flat in recent memory. The winds have been steady (relatively, for Scott s Flat) and warm except for the Regatta weekend, when the winds were and not warm! In fact, it was so cold on the barge during the Regatta that the race committee was wearing hats, gloves and four layers of clothes! Speaking of the Regatta, the 21 st Go For The Gold was a resounding success! A HUGE thank you to Tish Buti, our Vice-Commodore and this year s Regatta Chairperson for doing such a super job. She spent many hours planning and organizing to the last detail. The feedback has been very positive and if the compliments are any indication, next year we should have even more than the 51 boats we had participating in this year s race. Thanks again to Jerry Lewis, Race Chairman, for Expires 4/2003 an outstanding job on this year s Regatta. The separate start/finish lines were an improvement, at least from the race committee s perspective. From our point of view, it was the most exciting Regatta ever! I remember one race in particular, the wind was really blowing and the boats in the Open Keel class were showing their bottoms to the race committee as they went by. It was really exciting to us, I can imagine the Skippers had their adrenaline pumping. The winds were a little over powering but it tested your racing skills to the MAX. And, the races were over in record time. On Sunday the winds came from the opposite direction, and that changed everything for the racers and the race com- (Continued on page 4) O Dell Construction 123 Mill St., Grass Valley, CA John O Dell General Contractor/Civil Engineer SCL Tel: 530/ Fax: 530/ jodell@odellconstruction.com

Thanks to Wayne Buti for doing another great job running the race committee. And thanks to the Stealth (Dale Buchanan) and the rest of the committee: Nicki Talman, Pat Lund, and Becky Carter. I can t say enough about the racing because that s what it was all about. Now, the rest of the story. The highlight was being in our new clubhouse for the dinner and festivities. Yes, being close to the lake and the parking and having our own place was GREAT! Thanks to each and every one of you who helped make this Regatta a success. I really appreciate all your hard work. June has really been a busy month. Besides the Regatta and our regular club races, we had the Jr. Sailing Program and Friendship Club. Lynn Buchanan, our Jr. Sailing Instructor, will have a full report to present at our July meeting, and Tish Buti, who headed up Friendship Club Day, will tell us about that event. We also started our Wednesday night sail and barbecue. What a great way to break up the week! Go for a little sail, a little swim, raft up and have some dinner. It s great fun. I encourage everyone to come out and join us. Clubhouse update. Things are looking good, but we still have a couple of projects to finish. My main goal right now is to finish the barbecue. What we really need is a mason to finish laying the block. Any volunteers? The other little projects we need help with are repairing the donated picnic tables and finishing touches on the clubhouse. If you have been to the clubhouse I m sure you noticed that we have some nice flowers in the planters out front. As we don t have water on site yet, I would appreciate it if whoever is there would check the planters and water them if needed (and they most certainly will need it). There is a watering can in the shed, and you can fill it up at the fish cleaning station just remember that it operates on a motion sensor so you might have to wave your arms around to make it work. Regarding the dry storage area: If you have your boat stored in the parking lot, please make sure it is in the proper area for dry storage. If you are not sure, contact Karen at Kalyn Management and she will tell you where you should be. She has already informed me that we have some GCYC members who are keeping their boats in unauthorized parking spaces. Also, make sure to make your storage and mooring payments on time. Thanks for your cooperation on these items. We will plan to have our meetings at the clubhouse until September, weather permitting. The next meeting will be July 10 th. Bring something to barbecue and something to share last names A-M, dessert; N-Z, salad. Be there or be square! Don t forget our annual 4 th of July boat parade, where he who has the biggest squirt gun wins.

5 5 Racing Chair by Jerry Lewis Keeping the Gold at Home The 21 st Go For The Gold regatta went very well from this club's Race Chairman's perspective. We had 51 boats race in unusually strong winds (15-20mph) in eight classes ranging from 8' El Toros to a Catalina 25 in Open Keel. For a change, GCYC members were able to keep a lot of the 'award gold' in the foothills! to third place. GCYC had only one representative in the remaining five classes: Open Centerboard, Byte, Snipe, Sunfish and El Toro. Ed Guinaugh tied for fourth in the Open Centerboard class, just mis s- ing a gold pan. We need to (Continued on page 12) The Capri 22 class was dominated by GCYC sailors. We did have a long distance visitor from Las Vegas, but unfortunately our 'out of town guest' was T-boned in a pre-start port/starboard collision that resulted in damage to both his boat and the club's Capri 22. Jeremy Gicker and Kent Bennett won all but one race with Joe Weathers taking second and Mike Bringolf getting third in our up and coming club class. GCYC Catalina 22 racers also kept the gold in the club with Don Hare winning every race, Lynn Buchanan & Tish Buti taking second while Gordon & Karen Fellows grabbed third. John Andrew took the gold chest to the Bay Area for Open Keel in his Ult i- mate 20 with four firsts, while the Owens gang placed second with their Moore 24. 10 10 We are on the web! - We re on the web From the VC The 2002 Go For the Gold is now in the books!! I have so many people to thank-after all, this shows we are a working club! First and foremost, I'd like to thank Hugh, Joe Day, Wayne and all those helping hands that built our beautiful Clubhouse. The comments from all the participants were really heart warming. The weather gods were kind and we were able to show off our "home" at its very best. Thanks to Doug Epperson for providing power for the event and Jerry Lewis for our great sound systems-on land and lake. Special thanks to the Cutshalls and friends for preparing our great dinner on Saturday evening - I hope that Bruce is fully recovered. Ed Guinaugh donned his apron once more to give a helping hand at the barbeques-one picked up by Kent Bennett just for the occasion and one given to the club by the Thurstons. Sioux and Don Wight kept us well watered with the bottled water from NID and treated us to a beautiful dessert on Saturday night (I just love cake!). Thanks to Don & Barbara Eagle for acting as Clean-up crew after the evenings festivities were over. To Rebecca Carter and her group of picker-uppers and callers for our wonderful raffle prizes - kudos! Not only that, but she can sling a pretty mean hot dog, too! Chris & Beth Buti made a trip to the Bay Area just for those very special items from places like West Marine and Svensons, just to name a few. Thanks to Lynn Buchanan for having the energy to help with the raffle after dinner. Our parking lot crew of Gary Wade and Joe Weathers kept everyone lined up in an orderly fashion.

11 11 Once again our trophies were the best! Jeremy Gicker, Mike Bringolf, Dale Buchanan and Doug Epperson make them appear flawlessly at the awards ceremony. Our barge crew of Wayne Buti, Dale Buchanan, Nicki & Hugh Talman and Pat Lund worked through faulty computers, difficult printers and cranky spreadsheets to make it all come out right. They ran five races in very challenging conditions and really put 51 skippers through their paces. It was wonderful! Our Club Race Officer, Jerry Lewis put the final touches on those spreadsheets just to make sure they were done properly. Jerry rounded up his crew to set the marks in position on Friday and reset things on Saturday and again on Sunday. The winds rearranged things just to keep them on their toes. When it was all over, he and his crew of Wayne, Hugh and Cameron did the honors of rounding up the marks once more and unsticking the barge's anchor. Frank Nin and Jeff Lund watched over our fleets with an ever-vigilant eye as our crash-boat crews. Jeff even watched over the barge crew as he came to the rescue with an extra computer and printer. Our Regatta is our main fundraiser for the entire year and it takes so many willing hands to make it happen. Our club is very special in that whomever I asked to do something simply did it. Even the Board of Directors when asked to serve dinner, stepped up to the plateliterally. Racers, cruisers and landlubbers all come together for this one special event each year. Thank you to one and all. Please forgive me if I have overlooked someone and know that I feel it is a pleasure and an honor to serve and be part of such a well rounded and varied organization. Fair winds!

12 12 We are on the web! - (Continued from page 5) Keeping the Gold get our Junior Sailors involved in dinghy racing so we can better compete in these classes next time. The winds were the big story this year, with gusts to 25 mph and plenty of knockdowns, round-ups and wet dinghy racers. Paul Butts needed a few stitches from his encounter with the boom in an accidental gybe going toward the mark at the dam. Yes, downwind toward the dam. The first race on Sunday morning had the wind from the north (from up the creek). The Olympic Circle proved perfectly capable of handling this as the RC simply anchored the barge into the wind and raced as normal, except the windward mark was 5 instead of 1. The wind shifted toward the end of race four and everyone just drifted for the 20 minutes it took to swing 180 degrees. The final race had the winds from the normal south direction, but the strongest of the two days. In fact, no El Toros and only two Open Centerboarders raced the final day due to strong winds. race on Saturday that listed a double letter course (for twice around the course). This was not specifically reviewed in the Skipper's Meeting but was in the Sailing Instructions (parenthetically) and 16 sailors in three different classes only sailed once around, getting DSQed for going through the finish line when they weren't actually finishing. This year we tried three new things in the running of the regatta. First, we allowed a throwout, just counting the top four of five scores. This actually had no impact on standings and since it complicated the final scoring process, we've decided NOT to have throwouts next year. Secondly was the addition of a separate FINISH line. This worked well and should be further utilized next time by getting fleets that have completed their course quickly to be able to start again right away, rather than wait for slower classes to finish. This is still open for future discussion. And thirdly, there was a 'limit buoy' added about 150 feet downwind from the start line that marked the Starting Area that was off-limits to all classes not in their starting sequence. This was beneficial to all and will be used again, maybe with a larger buoy next time. Overall a great time had by all with a great dinner, raffle, racing, awards and clean-up. Thanks to everyone that helped make the regatta a success and to all the racers for participating and keeping the gold in the hills where it belongs! Tish Buti and crew on the RC barge did a great job with course management and starts. The only "hiccup" was the second
