3 Page 3 of 7 From the Commodore I hope everyone is enjoying these dog days of summer. Donna and I went on a train trip to Colorado then on by car to Kansas for a family reunion. I know it was hot here, but be thankful you weren't in the 106 degrees and %80 humidity that we experienced in the Midwest, it was brutal! We are really glad to be back. We went down to Alice this last weekend and really enjoyed feeling a bit "chilly" in the delta breezes Saturday evening. Speaking of which, the old adage about a boat being a hole in the water you throw money into? Alice is getting her carburetor rebuilt. We found her dripping gas into the bilge last time we were down because the float was stuck. We were able to get a new shutoff valve put in line and stop the leak. We've never had a problem with the ole atomic 4, it ran like a top until now, so I guess I should knock on wood. I truly understand why so many sailboats have diesels or outboards. While we were gone it looks like we had some really good racing up at the lake! I'm glad to hear the youth sailors came out and gave Jerry a run for his money. As many of you may know, we had a Neptune 16 donated to the club for the youth sailing program. It's about as small a keel boat as you can get. The Board will be discussing the best way to utilize this boat, whether using it for instruction or selling it and putting the proceeds towards expanding the program or maybe something else? If you have any ideas, let us know. It does need some work, so if you are a good DYI guy or gal, give Bill Gulley a call and let him know if you are willing to put in a few hours to fix it up. Enjoy this warm weather while you can, fall is just around the corner.. Howard Hendrich PICYA Information September 17, Coastal Cleanup Day September 24, 2016 PICYA Wheelchair Regatta (Encinal YC)
Richard Bach, Juan Salvador Gaviota* Club Notices Suggestion Box You can anonymously make recommendations to our board of directors with a mind to make this an even better yacht club! It can be found at or with this link: THESEUS SHIP Quandary The ship wherein Theseus and the youth of Athens returned from Crete had thirty oars, and was preserved by the Athenians down even to the time of Demetrius Phalereus, for they took away the old planks as they decayed, putting in new and stronger timber in their places, in so much that this ship became a standing example among the philosophers, for the logical question of things that grow; one side holding that the ship remained the same, and the other contending that it was not the same. Plutarch, Theseus " If our friendship depends on things like space and time, we've destroyed our own brotherhood! But overcome space, and all we have left is Here. Overcome time, and all we have left is Now. And in the middle of Here and Now, don't you think that we might see each other once or twice?? Richard Bach, Jonathan Livingston Seagull Free Sailing Magazines Latitude 38 and 48 North magazines can be picked up anytime at 148 Richardson Street in Grass Valley. They are in the driveway in the BLUE MAILBOX. Usually we get them between the 2nd and 4th of the month. They are also available at the general meeting. Club Meetings The May and June meetings were held Wednesday the 11 th and 25 th. The next General meeting will be held Wednesday, July 13 th at the Scotts Flat Lake clubhouse; dine from 6pm, Commodore s bell at 7pm to start the meeting. (The club meets the 2nd Wednesday of every month but December, and two Wednesdays before the Gold Country Regatta.) Dues Club dues for current members should be paid before 1 April. Forms available at :
5 Page 5 of 7 General Meeting Minutes July 13th, 2016 At 7:05 PM Commodore Hendricks started the meeting. There were no minutes from the previous meeting to be approved. Discussions were held about what to do with the newly donated Neptune 16 keelboat: 1). To be used in Adult sailing classes, 2.) For non boat owning members to use, 3.) To sell to improve the Youth sailing program. We look to Don Hare to give us direction about what to do with this boat as it was donated for Youth Sailing. Vice Commodore Perry closed out business for the Go for the Gold regatta. Everything looks good except one donated auction prize remains un-claimed: the one month free slip at Owl Harbor Marina. It was proposed that the club auction it off to anyone in a local PICYA club in an on line auction. Commodore Hendricks introduced the new Club secretary, Melinda Solis-Day, and thanked her for stepping up to that position. Treasurer Stephanie Perry reported the revenue from the Go for the Gold regatta is up from previous years. She said the club made nearly $6,000 profit as expenses were less than last year. She had suggestions for next year concerning food logistics, entry fees, and sales. The Club currently has over $10,000 in the bank. She will also look into getting some comparisons bids for our insurance. Membership Chair Hugh Talman shared information about an interview he had on KNCO. He has placed advertisements for the summer camp in the Union and will make up flyers as well. Currently we have 55 members. He welcomed new members Jerry and Donna who have a Catalina 250. They are new to our area and like to cruise. Race Chair Jerry Lewis thanked everyone for helping with the regatta. There were 63 boats including thirty Lasers. The Laser group plans on coming back next year. The last three Club races have gone well with 7 boats participating. The most recent race was the most challenging with wind speed of 19 knots and gusts up to 26. He reminded members about the upcoming regattas in the region. Education Chair Don Hare had 15 enthusiastic students in last week s class. They were able to launch the FJ dinghies as well as the Sunfish. He thanked both Don File and Bill Gully for their help. Don is considering an Advanced class July 23 and letting the students participate in the race (same day). Port Captain Bill Gulley is looking for a bracket for the electric motor on the Neptune 16. He brought to the club s attention the condition of mooring balls and anchor chains. His mooring recently broke away and his boat was rescued by Buzz and Patty before hitting anything or running aground. He later dove in to inspect the mooring field and saw others that need repair. Cruise Director Joe Day reported that summer meetings are generally smaller than the rest of the year. There is a cruise to Benicia at the end of the month. He reminded everyone who cruises to let him know so that they might earn club cruising points. New business: The Sunfish sails are horrible and the board has recommended buying new ones. Jerry Lewis moved that the club buys eight new Sunfish sails with clips and hardware. Stephanie Perry seconded it. The Club members present voted in the majority for the purchase. Bryant Cockroft reported that he had received a bid for new burgee stickers from the Grass Valley Sign Shop. They are $.83 each. Stephanie Perry made a motion to buy 100 stickers at that price. Joe Day seconded it. The Club members present voted in the majority for the purchase. Teresa Gaman reported on the Club s Christmas Party on Dec. 3. Teresa and Stephanie are planning this together. They would like to know how many members and guests will he attending so they can determine a suitable location. The Web Master and Newsletter will post about Christmas party. Bryant Cockroft reported the need for the Club to do some trail work in the Scotts Flat Lake area. This is part of our understanding with the NID board and is part of our club s responsibilities to the Lake recreation area. The raffle prize was an anchor which Charlie Piano won. The meeting was adjourned at 8:07 PM. Respectfully submitted by Melinda Solis-Day.
