WORK IN PROGRESS September 20, 2017 Reporter: Dave Yotter HMS SURPRISE Chris Carl The cutting out of the Hermione was a naval action that took place at Pueerto Cabello, Venezuela on 25 October The formerly British HMS Hermione, which had been handed over to the Spanish by its crew following a vicious mutiny, lay in the heavily guarded seaport of Puerto Cabello now under the command of Don Ramon de Chalas. A British frigate, HMS Surprise, was sent under Edward Hamilton to recapture Hermione. In naval terms this was called a cutting out operation a boarding attack by small boats, preferably at night and against an unsuspecting and anchored target. This had become a popular tactic during the later 18 th century. The Spanish lost 119 killed, while 231 were taken prisoner, 97 of whom were wounded. All but three including Don Challas and two other officers were subsequently returned to the port the next day. Another fifteen Spanish escaped by jumping overboard and swimming ashore, while 20 more escaped in a launch that had been guarding the ship. By contrast the British had not lost a single man, and had just twelve wounded, four of them seriously, One of them was Hamilton himself, who had suffered a blow to the head from a musket, and wounds from a saber, pike and grapeshot. For his daring exploit, Hamilton was made a knight by letters patent, a Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath (2 January 1815), and eventually became a baronet (20 October 1818). The Jamaica House of Assembly awarded him a sword worth 300 guineas, and the City of London awarded him the Freedom of the City in a public dinner on 25 October In 1847, the Admiralty awarded Hamilton a gold medal for the recapture of Hermione, and the Naval General Service Medal with the clasp, Surprise with Hermione, to the seven surviving claimants from the action. (Wikipedia) Chris has been busy during the last two months and has finished the rigging on this 1:75 scale model of Surprise. Most of the recent work has been running rigging on all three masts and the bowsprit. All of the

yards have been sent aloft and are complete with footropes, studding sail booms and rigging. All of the rigging has taken about four months to complete. Gun and gun port lids are next as are the anchors and ground tackle. EGYPTIAN SOLAR BOAT Don Dressel The Egyptian Solar Boat is actually the Royal Ship of Cheops from the Old Kingdom of Egypt, which is also known as the Sun Boat of Cheops. A pit was opened alongside the pyramid of Cheops in After years of work, in 1955, they began to lift the ship out of the pit it was buried in. The restoration of the ship was entrusted to Egypt s chief restorer Ahmad Youssof Moustafa; it was like a giant building kit, with 407 parts in 13 layers. The ship was found to have 1,224 wooden parts, the largest being m. long, the smallest 10 cm. The Lebanese cedar was found to be in excellent condition (some small parts were sycamore and sidder). Many details of the ship can be found in the books Ships of the Pharaohs by Björn Landström and The Boat Beneath the Pyramid by Nancy Jenkins. Don is working on the Woody Joe kit model of the Solar Boat in 1/72 scale, a fun model to build with the usual Japanese cedar wood, which smells to good. The instructions, although in Japanese, are easy to follow, but it does help to have some translation available if possible. Don has downloaded a Japanese to English translation software and installed it on his Apple I pad, which works fairly well. Don does prefer to use Titebond wood glue rather than the hot stuff, so things are a little different in construction. As shown in the picture above, the hull is completed and the deck and deck structures, along with the oars, have het to be installed. Tinplate Toy and Painting Bob Penikas Bob showed a tinplate paddlewheel steamer that was actually made from paper (see the photo the small model is next to his arm on the bench). The little kit was downloaded free from the internet at It was printed on 57lb cardstock and then coated with Krylon Gloss Acrylic. The gloss acrylic added nicely to its tinplate toy appearance. The model is about 5 inches by 2 ¼ inches. Bob also brought in a painting he had done to keep busy while he was under orders to keep clear of his garage workshop. The painting was done in acrylic on 12 X 16 inch stretched canvas. The reference was a photograph sent by a

photographer friend. He was interested in potential identification of the subject. The vessel was easily identified as a brig and David Okamura suggested that it looked very much like the brig Pilgrim of Dana Point. USS Constitution Paul Payne Paul is continuing construction of his scratch built 1:96 scale model of Constitution in her as-built configuration, ca Paul has been doing a lot of reworking of the spar deck, bulwarks, stern and head details to conform to the best available research of Constitution s appearance from launch to The main source had been Karl Marquardt s Anatomy of the Ship monograph. A second source was a book written by William Bass titled The Constitution, Super Frigate of many Faces, a limited edition published in An additional research source is a painting by Michel Felice Cornè of Constitution c, and the earliest known photograph of Constitution undergoing repairs at the Navy Yard, Portsmouth in 1858 showing what appear to be airports on the birth deck and the presumed tie rod ends. Paul thinks he is done with disassembly at this point. The spar deck has been removed so that the guns can be remounted more permanently. He wants to complete the stern and its carvings first and then reinstall the spar deck beams and planking. The stern is going to be a problem however because it is difficult to see how the carvings will fit in the space available for them. This is really a long term project which is taking longer than Paul thought it would. Dutch Fluyt Derfflinger Don Dressel A fluyt (archaic Dutch: fluijt flute ) is a Dutch type of sailing vessel originally designed by the shipwrights of Hoorn as a dedicated cargo vessel. Originating in the Dutch Republic in the 16 th century, the vessel was designed to facilitate transoceanic delivery with the maximum of space and crew efficiency. Unlike rivals, it was not built for conversion in wartime to a warship, so it was cheaper to build and carried twice the cargo, and could be

handled by a smaller crew. Construction by specialized shipyards using new tools made it half the cost of rival ships. These factors combined to sharply lower the cost of transportation for Dutch merchants, giving them a major competitive advantage. The fluyt was a significant factor in the 17 th century rise of the Dutch seaborne empire. In 1670 the Dutch merchant marine totaled 568,000 tons of shipping - about half the European total. (Wikipedia). By the end of the 17 th century the fluyt Derfflinger belonged to the fleet of Kurfuerstentum Brandenburg. In the triangle trade of that time she transported rum and other stuff to Africa, to buy slaves, who were then exchanged in the West Indies for sugar, which was then brought to Europe. Later she and other Brandenburg ships were used in the War of the Spanish Succession. The ship was named in honor of cavalry general Georg von Derfflinger, who in 1675 won a Brandenburg victory in the battle of Fehrbellin against the Swedish. He is depicted on the stern of the ship. The flag at the stern shows the Kurbrandenburg red eagle with hat, scepter, sword and breast shield. The 1:52 scale ship s hull was built by John Bakker, the Art Am Fusta kit model having been sold to him by Don Dressel, who had purchased the kit about 25 years ago from a hobby shop in Hollywood, Ca. John finished the hull but did not want to rig it, so it resided in John s home for about 9 months, before Don asked if he was ever going to rig it. Don was particularly interested in the rig of the Dutch Fluyt, so asked John if he could rig it. John said YES, take it and rig it he was no longer interested in the model. Thus, the rigging process is now under way. The fore and main masts are under construction, with the mizzen basically completed. The bowsprit spar had to be lengthened, so an added element was attached to the existing stub bowsprit and new gammoning will be installed. Since the kit instructions are no longer available, Don will use the information obtained from the book The Ships of Abel Tasman by Ab Hoving and Cor Emke as his main source of rigging information, along with some plans supplied by John from the original kit. Mackerel Schooner Smuggler Jim Ingersoll Eric A. R. Ronnberg, Jr. writes in his Gloucester Clipper Finishing Schooners: The mackerel purse sein fleets were generally active only during the schooling periods and followed the schools during their northward migrations. Since this was fair-weather fishing with safe anchorages never very far away, these schooners had enormous sail plans, particularly between 1865 and 1880, when the hulls were developed to extremes in what became known as the clipper model. The demand for greater speed, coupled with shallow berths Warf side, especially at Gloucester, Mass., forced the development of schooners with wide, shoal hulls, sharp bows, and long flat wide runs. The results produced a schooner that was much over canvassed for its draught and ballast carrying ability, unable to recover from knockdowns in sudden squalls, and easily tripped by sudden swells in heavy quartering or following seas. Vessels built expressly for mackerel seining tended to be the most extreme

in these qualities; however, as long as they fished in the moderate conditions for which they were designed, there were relatively few mishaps. Many schooners in this class were laid up over the winters, their owners prudently realizing the types limitations; nevertheless, this model was widely copied by the other fisheries which worked through the winter and many mackerel seiners were rigged down for the winter fishing or for freighting. These and vessels of similar model were the greatest single cause of accidents and the staggering losses endured by the fishing fleets in the 1870 s and 1880 s. Daniel Poland, Jr. and Charles C. Woodbury at Gloucester, Mass. built smuggler in 1887 for Gloucester interests. Jim is making good progress on his model of the mackerel schooner Smuggler, built from a Bluejacket kit. The hull is planked over solid and he has worked to make the hull planking more pronounced compared with the partially completed hull as received. Deck planking is on and painted as is most of the deck furniture. He is still working on the final color scheme and may town down the deck to a gray. The kit anchor was white metal and he made a more appropriate replacement that included a wood stock. German Battleship Gneisenau Sean Fallesen Gneisenau was a German capital ship, alternatively described as a battleship and battlecruiser, of Nazi Germany s Kriegsmarine. She was the second vessel of her class, which included one other ship, Scharnhorst. The ship was built at the Deutsche Werke dockyard in Kiel; she was laid down on 6 May 1935 and launched on 8 December Completed in May 1938, the ship was armed with a main battery of nine 28 cm (11 in) C/34 guns in three triple turrets, though there were plans to replace these weapons with six 38 cm (15 in) SK C/34 guns in twin turrets. Gneisenau and Scharnhorst operated together for much of the early portion of World War II, including sorties into the Atlantic to raid British merchant shipping. During their first operation, the two ships sank the British auxiliary cruiser HMS Rawalpindi in a short battle. Gneisenau and Scharnhorst participated in Operation Weserübung, the German invasion of Norway. During operations off Norway, the two ships engaged the battlecruiser HMS Renown and sank the aircraft carrier HMS Glorious. Gneisenau was damaged in the action with Renown and later torpedoed by a British submarine, HMS Clyde, off Norway. After a successful raid in the Atlantic in 1941, Gneisenau and her sister put in at Brest, France. The two battleships were the subject of repeated bombing raids by the RAF; Gneisenau was hit several times during the raids, though she was ultimately repaired. In early 1942, the two ships made a daylight dash up the English Channel from occupied France to Germany. After reaching Kiel in early February, the ship went into drydock. On the night of 26 February, the British launched an air attack on the ship; one bomb penetrated her armored deck and exploded in the forward ammunition magazine, causing serious damage and a large number of casualties. The repairs necessitated by the damage

were so time-consuming that it was determined to rebuild the ship to accommodate the 38 cm guns as originally intended. The 28 cm guns were removed and used as shore batteries. In 1943, Hitler ordered the cessation of conversion work, and on 27 March 1945, she was sunk as a blockship in Gotenhafen (Gdynia) in German-occupied Poland. She was eventually broken up for scrap in (Wikipedia.) Catalan Ship, Nao Bill Schultheis Sean showed his 1:700 model of the battleship Gneisenau made from a vintage 70 s Tamiya kit. He has added a Mk. 1 brand wood deck, Master gun barrels, and Tom s Modelworks phtoetch. The model has been backdated to August 1938 fit by blunting the bow and flattening the funnel cap. Also changed was the anchor arrangement. The original had three anchors and this was changed to a two-anchor arrangement. This necessitated change in the cutouts around the billboards and the wood deck was chopped short close to the bow to allow for working of the anchors. With Linguistic variation, these ships were called carraca or nau in Portuguese, Spanish and Genoese, caraque or nef in French, and Kraak in Dutch and Flemish. By the Late Middle Ages the cog, and cog-like square-rigged vessels equipped with a rudder at the stern, were widely used along the coasts of Europe, from the Mediterranean, to the Baltic. Given the conditions of the Mediterranean, galley type vessels were extensively used there, as were various two masted vessels, including the caravels with their lateen sails. These and similar ship types were familiar to Portuguese navigators and shipwrights. As the Portuguese gradually extended their trade ever further south along Africa s Atlantic coast during the 15 th century, they needed a larger, more durable and more advanced sailing ship for their long oceanic ventures. Gradually, they developed their own models of oceanic carracks from a fusion and modification of aspects of the ship types they knew operating in both the Atlantic and Mediterranean, generalizing their use in the end of the century for inter-oceanic travel with a more advanced form of sail rigging that allowed much improved sailing characteristics in the heavy winds and waves of the Atlantic Ocean and a hull shape and size that permitted larger cargoes. In addition to the average tonnage naus, some large naus (carracks) were also built in the reign of John II of Portugal, but were only widespread after the turn of the century. The Portuguese carracks were usually very large ships for their time, often over 1000 tons, and having the future large naus of the India run and of the China and Japan trade, also other new types of design. (Wikipedia.).

Bill is proceeding on is Nao of ca in 1:30 scale. The model is being built from a Woody Joe kit. He is now finished with the planking which is really a strip wood veneer being applied over the initial layer of planking. Due to the roundness of the hull this was challenging in the ends of the ship. The technique that worked the best was to coat both surfaces with Titebond, let them dry and then use a hot iron to bond the strips down to the hull.

By Don Dressel Old Salts in Port: Steve Jones, John Bakker, Don Dressel, Don Leyman, Bill Russell, Guy Bell, Hank Tobar, Tom Stellar. Ships in Port: Derfflinger, HMS Vanguard. Philadelphia, Mayflower, Fair American, Washington Galley, HMS Pegasus Don Leyman was the first Mayflower Group member to discuss his model of the HMS Pegasus. He indicated that he had not done too much work on the model lately but did complete the ships wheel complete with rigging. It is fully functional, although he does not actually use it since the blocks involved in the movement of the rudder via the wheel do not have any sheaves in them. Don then went on to explain all the things that he still had to complete prior to the masting and rigging. Some of the railings still have to be completed, bumpkins installed among other things. The Loup (stirrup) for the fish davit has been installed but is questionable. Don still has not decided if he is going to fully mast and rig the model or not, but the figurehead still has to be carved. If Don decides not to full rig the model, he will at least rig the lower masts and yards. Below are two more pictures of Don s HMS Pegasus showing his stern carvings and his ships wheel installation. Don Dressel was the next speaker, who gave the history of the Art Am Frusta kit model that he had purchased many years ago, the model being of particular interest since it was a Dutch Fluyt. Among other details, the removal of the stub masts and replacement by the masts as sown in the photo was discussed, along with the effort required to extend the bowsprit to its proper length by adding a section of wood to make the spar the proper length. The Woolding at the mid section of the spar is where the extra dowel (with the correct taper) was added, as shown in the photograph on the following page. A brass pin

with it once the model has been completed! was installed between the two pieces of wood to add strength. Hopefully, the spar will stand up to the necessary pressure of the stays when rigging commences. There were also a few other items that John had from the kit that he gave to Don, which saves the necessity of making the missing blocks and deadeyes from scratch. The fact that the lower Dutch caps had sheaves installed in them was an added bonus, as far as Don was concerned. It will be a fun model to mast and rig! The only question now is what is Don going to do John talked first about his Philadelphia, which has been completed. John said it took him 2 months to build the Model Shipways kit from Model Expo. It appears as thought the kit model follows the Smithsonian plans pretty closely. John did an excellent job on the rigging of this model, as the photo shows. John also stated that this model was a fun model to build resulting in a very attractive and accurate model. His next subject, the Washington Galley, a scratch built model available from the Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is much more difficult to build. John is having problems with the instructions and the details on the model. He is now convinced that the model, once completed, may not be the best representation of that ship. Also discussed was the HMS Vanguard, an Amati kit model from Ages of Sail, which John says is an excellent vendor to deal with. He painted the Nelson strip on the model but is not that happy with the result. He also made the stove, which is not yet installed, but will be. His next step is coppering the lower hull there are some difficulties with the coppering and John is not sure he is going to do the coppering. One of the problems is the copper supplied with the kit. A photo of the Washington Galley is shown to the left with a lot of wood filler used on the hull to make it smooth. Again, Jon is not happy with the result so far, but it is what it is. The HMS Vanguard is shown in the next page. The Vanguard kit itself is a HUGE kit that is very well packed in a number of boxes inside the large box with the cover art. John has not indicated if he will try and rig this model or not, but if he does, it will be a very large model once completed requiring a rather large case not to mention the space to keep it. Once you have been to John s home you will understand, as there is already a large collection of completed ship models in cases,

not to mention the large collection of scroll saw artwork that John has made. That is one of the fun things to see and observe when you come to John Bakker s home for one of these Mayflower Group Meetings. Bill Russell talked about the Mayflower ship model that was scratch built by a past SMA member, Jack Moffett. Many of the older SMA members will remember Jack and his fine art work that he used to complete for the club. Bill gave the model to Hank Tobar, since he did not think he would have tome to complete the model. Hank has completed the masts and hopefully will rig her, although there are no authentic plans of the vessel available today. Jack built a plank-on-bulkhead model according to Bill. Hank Tobar was the next presenter who discussed both the Mayflower and his efforts to build the German Steingraeber kit model of the Fair American, both models shown in the photo here. It turns out that the Steingraeber model of the Fair American was purchased from Don Dressel a few years ago at one of the SMA auction meetings. Hank is doing a wonderful job on the model and is now working on the anchors and other details. If you check out the planking of the lower hull, port and starboard, that match up very well, showing how good a job Hank did spilling his planking. The members of the Mayflower Group are looking forward to the progress on both models and hope Hank will return to show the progress he is making. The usual fun and camaraderie took place at the meeting and we all look forward to next months meeting.

The ROPE Tokyo Honorary SMA Members Part VIII By Don Dressel Mr. Etsuro Tsuboi This is a continuation of last months article on one of ROPE S finest scratch building ship modelers. Again, all the scratch built models made and presented at the ROPE Exhibitions from 1979 to 1007 were 1/300 scale, some of the earlier ones shown in last months newsletter. Since this is a continuation, the following models will be shown below starting with the 15 th ROPE Exhibition model of the Le Coureur, then the 18 th ROPE Exhibition Halifax, the 27 th ROPE Exhibition HMS Victory, the 31 st ROPE Exhibition Le Renommee and the 32 nd Rope Exhibition The Ships of Columbus. One of the reasons why I could not complete this article in the last newsletter was the large number of scratch built miniature models that Mr. Tsuboi has built over the years. I wanted to show pictures of all his models, thus this continuation of his life s work in ship model building. To avoid confusion, the photo to the left above is the Le Coureur evidently there are two of them displayed as a sort of diorama. The model to the right above is the Halifax, I believe based on the information from Harold Hahn s book The Colonial Schooner as well as the monography (plans) drawn by Mr. Hahn.

Since the HMS Victory is, as part of this article, a separate and special story, I will skip the photo of that model and show photos of the last two models mentioned in paragraph one of this article. The picture to the left above is the Le Renommee, I believe based on information from books and plans by Jean Boudriot (ANCRE) in French (I do not know if any of his books were published in Japanese some of them are published in English). I also believe that all the plans were originally in 1:48 scale, which indicated that the plans had to be rescaled to 1/300 by Mr. Tsuboi. The photo to the right shows all of Columbus s ships at see, again in a diorama. Mr. Tsuboi s side story of making the HMS Victory follows: He states: If someone asked me to pick out my symbolic model among the miniature models I worked on, I would chose HMS Victory. As I have worked on miniature models of relatively small size ships, I decided to make a challenge on making the ship of the line. I purchased monographs and plans prior to my modeling. I wondered if I should make it at 1/192 scale or at 1/384 scale but I made up my mind to build the model at the same 1/300 scale as I preferred to be consistent with the other miniature models. My decision turned out to be a tremendous amount of work required to finish it. It finally turned out to be about 10 years of hard work. While I was working on it, there were some parts which I could not understand very well. I decided to visit Portsmouth to clear my doubts. By observing HMS Victory at Portsmouth, I tried to make my model as authentic as possible.

The 1/300 scale made the actual length of my model 224 mm. The length of the four boats on board were 18mm, 28mm, 32mm and 36 mm respectively. The size of the rigging line became 0.04mm for the ratlines, the main lower stay being 0.51mm. The actual size of the rigging resulting in 20 different sizes of line, all of which had to be made from scratch, since line that small was unavailable. There were also 6 different kinds and sizes of deadeyes ranging from 0.8mm to 1.3mm. Gratings had a thickness of 0.25mm. All of this scratch work required me to start making proper jigs first. He describes later in this article just how he made the model and jigs, but first there are a number of photos below of the completed HMS Victory in close up:

Along with the pictures on the previous page, there are a couple more here of the masting and rigging effort plus a photo of the completed model alongside much larger scale model made by Mr. Shirai. It was a real privilege for several members of the SMA in the past to have seen both models on display at one of the ROPE Exhibitions in the past that we were fortunate to attend. Mr. Bill Russell and Mr. Yas Komorita were the leaders of the first several trips to Japan to visit the ROPE Exhibitions and our many friends in the ROPE. In the 33 rd. ROPE Exhibition Mr. Tsuboi exhibited his Naniwamaru at 1/150 scale, the 34 th ROPE Exhibition featured his French 74 Gun Ship relief based on the book The Seventy Four Gun Ship by Mr. Jean Boudriot, which is available in a 4 volume set in English. There is also a single volume, Le Vaisseau De 74 Canons by Jean Boudriot in print French. Both of these models are pictures below. An additional relief was made of the Golden Hind, also shown at the 34 th Exhibition, which is also shown below the 74-gun relief. The 36 th ROPE Exhibition featured one of my favorite models, La Fleur De Lis, which is a French galley in 1/96 scale based on a monograph and book by Gerard Delacroix. This model has inspired me to one day build a model of a galley, although it will not be in the same scale, since the carvings are very difficult to complete in that scale. John Bakker has built the Corel version of the Real De

France galley in a much larger scale, but having seen John s model, I decided that it was too big. Hopefully, the galley of La Real by Dusak will be a better scale and smaller in size, so maybe I can find room for it. Pictured here are four photos of La Fleur De Lis model made by Mr. Tsuboi. There was a gap between the 34 th to the 36 th ROPE Exhibition, which is easily explained by the photos here of the galley. There was another gap between the 36 th ROPE Exhibition and the 40 th ROPE Exhibition, that was necessary to build the 1/19 scale Le Francois of 1683, which again is available in book form along with a monograph of the ship, unfortunately only in French, as far as I know. This one is a fifth rate vessel of the French Navy by Jean-Claude Lemineur and is available from as are a number of other books, the La Fleur De Lis being another title obtainable from the same source. I do not know if Mr. Tsuboi is able to read and understand French, but he sure can built

excellent ship models from these sources. Shown below are four snapshots of his model Le Francois in 1/96 scale shown at the 40 th ROPE Exhibition. I would like to thank Mr. Tsuboi for supplying me with so many fine pictures of his work that is an inspiration to us all. He is a world-class ship modeler. He has provided me with much more information and pictures that I will share with the SMA membership in a further installment of his work, showing first his original design studio, an explanation on his realization of the model of the HMS Victory along with his methods of making rope and many of his jigs necessary to fabricate his models. He provides more photos of his efforts in making the items for his ship models that may be of great assistance to ship modelers in all scales.

Upcoming Ship Modeling Events Auction Next month, October, will be the annual SMA auction night. Bring all SHIP RELATED items such as kits, tools, plans, books, etc. to the meeting that you no longer want to auction off to your fellow ship modelers. You MUST be a member of the SMA to participate in the auction. You CAN purchase membership at the auction in order to meet that requirement if you are not already an SMA member. Don will bring in three kits for sale with the beginning bid of $50.00 for each kit: Amati s Xebec, Model Shipways Glad Tidings (pinky schooner) and Euro models Pinco Genovese. In addition, there will be the Swedish gun station, completely built in a case (see photo) also beginning at $ I am sure there will be many tools and other items also from other members. Treasurer s Report Larry Van Es reports that there is $4, in the SMA account for the end of August Web Manager s Report Doug Tolbert has indicated that all the past SMA Newsletters are on the SMA web page for access to members only. Doug posts the latest SMA Newsletter onto the web page as soon as it is published. If there are any comments concerning the SMA Web page please inform one of the SMA officers. San Diego Ship Modelers Guild For those SMA members who may be interested, the San Diego Ship Modelers Guild now has their meetings on the Berkley on the second Tuesday of each month.
