It seems impossible that we are almost half way through our season. Where does the time go? Although we haven t had any sailable home ice, the travelers have been able to get some regattas in. We just wrapped up our Old Timer s Party last week and I have to say, it was such a memorable night. Thank you to everyone that helped, brought food, or just came out to share your stories. Our next entertainment event From The Vice Commodore Hello Fellow Iceboaters, Hope your Christmas and New Years were good for you! I m sitting here writing this article with my boat still in the loft, and My thoughts to God, that he can work a miracle by dropping the Temps BIG Time for weeks to come, the sooner the better and hopefully for a couple of months at least. As I m writing this sitting across from me is a large box of tissues and a bag of Riccola cough drops; this is courtesy of Typhoid Stribney he wasn t at bowling on January 10 th, so you get the blame. Speaking of bowling, your 3 iceboater teams could sure use your support (we get awfully thirsty) or some cheering on, (Couldn t hurt) May is just around the corner WINTERFEST! The regatta will kick off on Thursday night with $1.00 beers. Friday, TIYC will be serving food for anyone that would like dinner and as usual, there will be a meeting upstairs at 8:00pm. On Saturday, there will be the annual Poker Run; this year there are 10 total stops! We are in need of volunteers to help out with the Poker Run, Bartending in the evening on Saturday and Sunday clean up. If you would like to volunteer, please feel free to call me to schedule. Any and all volunteers are appreciated!!! The DN Gold Cup World & North American Championship is scheduled for January 22 nd through February 2, To all of our TIYC members planning to participate, safe travels and good luck! Think Ice Commodore Amanda Foeller even help me bowl my average or better 2 nd game. A big shout out goes out to our Traveling DNers; They placed well in the 2012 DN centrals, 9 out of the top 15 of the Gold Fleet. I m hoping that s the right number, I m sure I ll be corrected if not. Anyway it was still a great showing for our club, so thank you and well done. The next big completion is the DN Westerns to be held in Wisconsin what the outcome I m not sure, I didn t make it to the Jan. 11 th meeting, Sorry. I heard the Old Timers party was well attended with plenty to eat and good fellowship. According to my conversation with Commodore Amanda a good time was had by all. Thank you Rob Homan, and Thank You to all that came for coming. The end of January is coming and with it comes Winterfest Jan The Poker Run is longer this year, but the big tent will be a little smaller. Thursday will be dollar beer night at ORYC Friday TIYC will have food available and a DJ for your entertainment. Saturday the Ships Store will be open and selling the usual regatta shirts plus hoodies and other goodies Continued on Page 2

I am going to make a request now, when the volunteer worker sheet comes around to you at the next meeting PLEASE give it a thought as we are going to NEED A LOT OF HELP putting this party on. Think Ice!! Ciao!!! V/C Bob Hi, Some of the pictures in this edition are older in honor of the Old Timers party that just occurred. Kelly From the Treasurer From the 90 s Sisung Collection 2nd dues notices going out on Jan 14th. Those who have already mailed in their dues, your cards will be in the mail this week. Ice Chips Think Ice Be Safe, P/C Jeff (Flip) Phillips Photo from the Jockett s Oh boy...it looks like another "BUST" season. What in the world is going on? I got an idea it may be the "Curse of the Berzerker"!! Think about it!! Since the demise of the MK I and the new(?) MK II or "Badman" express things just went to pot!!! Or could it be we have a lady commodore! Naaaa, but...uhhh I think I'm in trouble, "what s new?!?! Us local guys are really getting frustrated and the same thing has happened before so lets keep a stiff upper lip, things could be worse sure enough things could. But at least the young bucks are a giving good showing so far on their travels. Good going guys!! The recent "Ole Timers" party went well with a good turn out. Only problem was that the "ole" timers were not there! Huh!!! Well I looked around and I was one of them. Plus a "few" of us. Makes ya' feel a little aged. Some of us can remember the original group and can tell you they had some harrowing and fun times too. Some things don't change. Oh well, " time waits" for no one"! Where have I heard that line?? We might get lucky an still have a season here but in my opinion, slim to none. So with that keep your fingers cross and shake the voodoo doll. As if anybody noticed I, "choke", missed a meeting. Let me explain, I was just a "little under the weather" and I didn't want to known as "TYPHOID" Jim. It was rough!! It was so bad that I would even wish it on "Jodi"!!! Oooooooh... "Think Ice" Strib
3 Otis, R.I.P We received word recently that Otis, Les and Debbie s Iceboat Patrol Cat has left the ice for the last time. For those of us who docked our iceboats in front of Lester s house, we were greatly saddened by the news of Otis s demise. You could always look forward to cat tracks on your boat when you arrived to go sailing and at least one visit by Otis while you were rigging just to make sure you were doing things right. On a brighter note there was also a report of 4 (yes FOUR) scale model Otis s in the vicinity. Otis obviously was busy during the off-season. Otis you will be missed. Photo from the Jockett s
4 An Early Start: 3 regattas and 7 days of sailing for some. By: Kent Baker 2012 Great Western Challenge Regatta December 1st-2nd. A long haul with stop in Madison, WI to pick up another iceboater along the way. Mike Beresni's boat was in the trailer, but he flew out ahead of us to Minneapolis to visit with his mother and meet up with us on the ice. Friday morning, we arrived in Alexandria, MN (only about an hour from Fargo, ND) ahead of schedule. On a whim, we called the hotel and asked for early check-in. I was surprised when they said yes! This gave us time to lie down in real beds, eat some breakfast, and shower before heading to the Lake. Pelican Lake was immediately south of Lake Christina, the site of last year s Western Challenge. The ice was snow-free and about 4 inches in depth. No 4 wheelers were used due to the thin ice, and there was a big crack that kept the sailing to the northern most corner of the lake. Dozens of scrub races were held on Friday. Saturday morning we arrived to find 3/4 inch of water on the ice. We were surprised, but undeterred. 4 Opti, 4 Gold fleet, and 4 Silver Fleet races were held. Sunday the water had all evaporated. We quickly got 3 more races off as the sun became very bright and warm. I was noticing gas bubbles were forming under the ice and was glad to get off before any of them were opened up by the suns warming rays. In the top 10 for this regatta was J.R. Francis(6th), Rich Potcova(8th) and Kent Baker(9th). 32 boats competed in Gold, 45 in Silver, and 8 in the Opti fleet. Mark Christensen of Minneapolis won the event. Central Lakes DN Championships December 29-30th. We had hoped for two regattas in 4 days, but the weather did not cooperate in time. Houghton Lake is a great big lake with a nice waterfront hotel for accommodations. Ice had some snow on it, but overall decent with a rating of about a 7 or 8 depending on where you were checking. 2 days of racing, 7 races, and a Gold fleet of 27 boats, which included 2 past World Champs and sailors from as far away as California and Rhode Island made for some tough competition. Even the Silver Fleet of 16 boats had some interesting battles with Craig Koschalk (formerly of Toledo) and our own Glen Betzoldt mixing it up with the eventual leader, Hal Bowman (Hal donated a DN to TIYC a few years back to encourage new sailors into the sport). Top TIYC sailor in Silver was Glen Betzoldt (4th) and in Gold TIYC took 6 of top 10 with George Reis in 10th, Kent Baker in 9th, Robert Holman in 8th, Skip Dieball in 7th, Rich Potcova in 5th, and John Harper in 4th. Many sailors stayed behind to enjoy some more sailing. Our friends from Rhode Island reported high winds on Monday made for interesting sailing and also polished the snow off the ice. Western Lakes DN Championships January 5-6 Much shorter than a trip to Minnesota, we drove through the night to Madison, WI and again found ourselves early at the hotel. We had to wait an hour for early check-in, so Mike Beresni, Erica, and I took advantage of warm spot in front of the fireplace while Rich and Jody toughed it out in the cold van. The launch ramp was about 1/4 mile from the headquarters, Springers bar and restaurant. Four Lakes Ice Yacht Club cleverly arranged for 2 four-wheelers to tow all of our trailers on the ice from the ramp to the restauant. We had a great 2-day 7 race regatta. Both days there were buffets in the restaurant after cold, weary sailors got off the ice. It was fun to meet some of the local sailors, many of whom were Renegade and Skeeter sailors. Conditions were challenging with the snow on the ice being crunchy and tough to get through on Saturday. Warmer conditions had evaportated some of the snow on Sunday making it a little easier sailing. Familiar powerhouses were in the top 5: Mark Isabell (5th of Pewaukee), Steve Orlebeke (4th of Pewaukee), John Dennis (3rd of Minneapolis), Mark Christensen (2nd of Minneapolis), and not surprising, Ron Sherry of Detriot took first. TIYC's Rich Potcova and Kent Baker took 6th and 9th respectively. 29 gold, 37 silver, and 3 opti sailors competed. New member, Mike Beresni enjoyed sailing on borrowed equipment after his boat broke on Houghton Lake. A William's Infusion mast had him on a new learning curve with smiles on his face at the end of each race. Team mate Jody Kjoller noted how interesting it is that you can break your equipment and end up with much nicer stuff... for free! Maybe not so much, as Beresni has taken the bait and appears to be in this for the long haul!
5 Page Other Sailing Scrubbed On January 5-6th, people sailed at various lakes around Michigan while some of us went West. We watched the Maumee Bay form a nice snow-free surface which remained for some time. Sadly it never got much over 2 inches of thickness and our most recent warm-up took all the ice away. Hopes of returning to Houghton Lake were dashed when warm temps and rain formed drain holes there. The Great Ice Search DN sailors all over North America are currently keeping a close eye on local conditions and the weather forecasts trying to anticipate where we might hold the IDNIYRA Gold Cup World Championships and North American Championships to be held on the best ice available in North America between the dates of January 26th and Feb. 2nd. Rich Potcova and Kent Baker are the Commodore and Vice- Commodore of the IDNIYRA and have the big task of coordinating 130 sailors and dozens of volunteers to this anticipated event. Sailors from all over Europe will be there, including Tomasz Zakrzewski of Poland who will defend his World Championship title won in Sweden last year. I highly recommend coming out to watch some of this event if you can. We hope it can be held somewhere in Michigan or Ohio. Even Maumee Bay is not out of the question, though it poses many logistical problems! 5
