2 P AGE 2 OctOber 2013 PreSIDeNt S MeSSAGe Hello Whalers, I hope everyone is well as we start into Autumn. Last month s General Meeting was a special one. The Club met at the Glendale Adventist Medical Center s hyperbaric chamber. This was a great meeting and educational program. Because a number of members were unable to attend, we will have those that were there give us a recap at Wednesday s General Meeting. Elections take place next month at our regular General Meeting on Nov 6th. Nominations are taking place right now. If you, or someone you know, wants to serve on the Whalers Board, forward names to the Nominating Committee. The Nominating Committee s address is nominate@whalersdiveclub.com. Nominations close on October 5th at 12:00AM. Any nominations sent after that will not be eligible. The full list of nominees that will be on the November ballot will be announced on October 7th. This will happen through an and on the Whaler s web-site. The current (not final) list of nominees will be announced at the October General Meeting. So now is the time to get the nominations in! November 2nd is the date for the 50th Anniversary Banquet. It s coming up fast! There will be plenty of delicious food and great prizes to win. If you have made your reservation and paid, great, we are looking forward to seeing you there. If you have RSVP d but have not yet paid, please do so very soon. The Banquet Committee needs the number of committed (paid) attendees in order to finalize the plans for the food. Their cut-off date is October 25th! We are looking forward to seeing you there as well, so get your place at the Banquet paid for as soon as you can. Contact the Banquet Committee with any questions! 4 P AGE 4 We had a great September meeting with 16 Whaler s and guests attending the lecture by Dr. Jo Wilmeth at the Glendale Adventist Medical Center. It was very informative and I was amazed at how many injuries in attention to the DCS that the hypobaric chambers help. Currently we have 79 active members on our roster, up again from the month prior. Thank you members for your continued support in helping the membership grow. Please welcome the following new members to the club: Laura Scott (and a newly certified diver-congratulations), and a thank you to the following members for their renewal and continued support: Chris Hartswick, Denise Peel, and Rod Francis The following Whaler Memberships are expired or coming due: Al Kholos, Edgar Rios, Martin Valinsky, Dexter Kelly, Jesse Reyes, Elizabeth Rinnander, Donna and Mike Crumley, and Gerhard Grotsch. 8 P AGE 8 The Fish Reef Project is the next great ocean enhancement and restoration project which will turn empty seafloor into thriving marine ecosystems which will be home, breeding and feeding grounds to millions of marine mammals, sea birds, turtles, fish, lobster, abalone, scallops, marine algae and much more. The Fish Reefs will reduce pressure on natural reefs thus reducing overfishing while helping to restore damaged natural reef systems. The Fish Reefs are designed to enhance marine life, provide study, eco-tour and fishing opportunities for everyone. The Fish Reefs are a triple net positive in that they quickly increase marine life abundance, they unite the ocean community to a single common cause that we can all benefit from and they require no heavy enforcement or use of public funds or resources to maintain. It is the goal of the Fish Reef Project to create a five acre fish reef within ten miles of several harbors in Southern California and Hawaii within the next 3-5 years. To make this a reality, we do need community support and donations. 9 P AGE 9 Where: Solstice Canyon Hike Date: Saturday, November 23, 2013 Time: Meet in parking lot at 9:30AM Directions to trailhead: From Pacific Coast Hwy, turn inland on Corral Canyon Rd. Drive 0.25 miles to park entrance on the left. Solstice Canyon is in Malibu GPS Coordinates: N W The Hike: It is an easy 3 miles with very little elevation gain and plenty of cool things to see along the way. The highlight is the Roberts Ranch House. From the parking lot we will take the Solstice Canyon trail to the Roberts Ranch House and for our return, we will hike along the Rising Sun Trail passed the TRW buildings and back down to the parking lot. If you want to join us for some ice cream or frozen yogurt afterwards, Tessie and Ken know of a great place to stop in Malibu. About the area-located in Malibu, this site has one of the only year-round waterfalls in the mountains. Full of history dating back to the early 20th century, visitors can take an easy hike for a couple of miles, or a strenuous hike over si miles. Proximity to the beach makes this an extremely popular destination on the weekends. With limited parking, carpooling is strongly encouraged. The solitude, serenity, and abundant natural resources have attracted people to Solstice Canyon for centuries. The Chumash historically used the land for food, water, and shelter. Ranchers grazed cattle in the area for many years. Around 1865, Matthew Keller bought a stone cottage which is still visible from Solstice Canyon Trail. The cottage is believed to be the oldest existing building in Malibu. The stone house survived many wildfires but was finally destroyed in the 2007 Corral Fire. The stone walls are still visible across the stream as you walk down Solstice Canyon Trail. Another home was built on the property in Renowned African-American architect Paul Williams designed the house for property owners Fred and Florence Roberts. The house was later in an issue of Architectural Digest for its stunning blend of natural features within the design, including waterfalls, creeks, and trees. Today, you can see a small part of the past in the horseshoes and colorful pieces of glass glittering in the walkways at Tropical Terrace, near the building s foundation. Solstice Canyon was an important site of early pioneering space research. Technology Laboratories Inc., a subsidiary of Thompson-Ramo-Wooldright (TRW), rented 10 acres from the Roberts family from The site was used to test satellite equipment for space missions, including the Pioneer 12. Solstice Canyon was one of only three places in the world chosen to conduct such tests, due to the lack of man-made or natural disturbances. At the TRW overlook, you can see the foundations of the TRW building, all that remain after the Corral Fire. Today, Solstice Canyon still serves as a haven from city life. The use of the Whaler s mailing list is to distribute club related information to the membership. If you would like to send a general announcement to the full membership, please send it to any of the board members ( /contact/contact.htm) and we will be happy to redistribute it if it s appropriate to club business. We make every attempt to hide the addresses of our membership when sending mass mailings. Also, please do not share addresses from our published Buddy List with any non-member. Although your political, religious, and social viewpoints are important, and jokes and YouTube videos can be funny, these certainly do not fall into the category of club business.
