II. GENERAL The is a gas purge system for converting water head to pressure for operation in conjunction with water level pressure sensing instruments. It provides a constant differential pressure (3-5 psi) above the pressure head at the end of the river line. This constant differential pressure maintains a constant bubble rate through the river line and enables a pressure sensing instrument to measure the change in pressure. The variation in pressure is proportional to the variation in river level. The HS-23 is a design which incorporates a regulator valve for setting the bubble rate. The unit is pre-calibrated at the factory (refer to section VII). This new design eliminates the need of sight glass and oil reservoir for the setting of the bubble rate. It also eliminates costly and often ineffective maintenance of the bubble unit due to oil inadvertently getting into the system which is the most common cause of failure with sight glass devices. The HS-23 is a low maintenance unit with minimum components ensuring increased reliability. The high quality of the construction materials ensures long life in the harshest of environments. III. UNPACKING YOUR HS23 BUBBLE UNIT This package should contain: Dry Bubble Unit Allen Key (1/32ʺ) Please verify you have received these items and that the type of dry bubble unit is as ordered. 6 V. INSTALLATION & OPERATION OF MODEL HS23 Set gas bottle in convenient position and fix to wall or shelf with a bracket or chain to prevent bottle from falling over. Before fitting regulator, turn on bottle to clear dust away from the outlet (also check that bottle contains gas). Fit regulator in accordance with manufacturer's instructions. Fix bubble unit in a secure vertical position to wall or edge of shelf. Install tubing as required by site conditions. Figure 1 and Figure 2 show recommended tubing arrangements for single, dual line and dual orifice systems respectively. The inlet and outlet ports are 1/4 NPT female threads and on standard units are fitted with compression fittings for use with 3/8" OD x 1/8" ID polythene tubing for outlets and 1/4" OD nylon tubing for gas inlet. An adaptor fitting can be provided to accommodate a variety of sensors and alternative tube fittings are also available on request. Refer to appendix for suggested site arrangements. Prior to opening the gas supply valve, ensure that black valve(a) to instrument and the red purge valve (C) is shut, and that black valve (B) or (E) to the river are open. In addition, ensure that the gas supply regulator is set at 500 KPa (72 psi). This supply pressure is adequate for a change of river height of 25 Metres (80 Feet). The supply pressure to the bubble unit regulator should not exceed 1,050 kpa (150 psi) under any circumstances. Open the gas supply pressure and than open the red purge valve (C) to purge the river line for approximately 10 minutes, check orifice and ensure that gas is bubbling from the orifice After purging the river line shut the red purge valve (C) and allows the bubble rate to settle for five minutes before proceeding. The HS23 is factory set to 100 ± 10% bubbles per minutes (this rate represents approximately 27 bubbles per minutes at the river line). (Refer to fig.4a) for bubble rate selection chart. For details of bubble rate adjustments (refer to section VII). Slowly open valve (A) to instrument - instrument should now respond to pressure in system and soon record the true head over the orifice. Leak test all joints. Adjust the pressure sensing device to correspond to the head indicated by the reference gauge. Page 6

1. Shut river line valves (B) and (E) and ensure that the purge valve is closed. 2. Shut instrument line valves (A) 3. Place Bubble Test Orifice in a container of water 4. Connect Test Orifice Line 5. Slowly open Instrument Line 6. Note: Bubble rate may not appear immediately at test orifice. Allow sufficient time for differential regulator and HS23 to stabilise pressure in test line. This may take up to 10 minutes. Once bubble rate has stabilised check bubble and if adjustment is required, refer to the chart below. 7. After checking bubble rate turn of instrument line and disconnect test orifice line 8. Reopen instrument and river line The chart below has been prepared to show the relationship between the bubble rate at the test orifice and the equivalent rates that would be observed on a sight glass bubble unit. Once the desired bubble rate has been achieved tighten the grubscrew to lock the metering valve. Bubble rate when a Gas Chamber Orifice Model (GCO1-P) in use Bubble rate when a standard orifice model BU07 in use Bubble rate when a HS22 bubble unit with sight glass is in use Note: Bubble rates detailed above are only an approximate guide for the purpose of conserving gas and have no influence on the performance of the transducer. Example: To adjust the HS23 to the equivalent of 120 bubbles per minute, the metering valve should be rotated anticlockwise until 35 bubbles per minute are emerging from the test orifice of the bubble unit. Page 9
VII ADJUSTMENT OF BUBBLE RATE USING RIVER LINE 12 Minimum Bubble Rate as shown in table below Change in level Metres/Hr 8 4 HS23 with GCO1P HS23 with BU07 HS22 with Glass Site Graph showing relationship between follow rate and bubble rate for selected length of tube. Please note the bubble rate changes depending on the orifice that has been used. Figure 4
The HS23 Bubble Unit has been factory set to the equivalent rate of 100 bubbles per minute. To check and adjust the bubble rate the following method should be employed: 1. Shut the instrument line valve (A), river line valves (B) and (E) and ensure that the purge valve is closed. 2. Disconnect the river line tubing from the bubble unit. 3. Connect a one metre length of tube to the river line fitting of the bubble unit. 4. Submerge the other end of the tube to a depth of 100mm in a container of clean water. (This end of the tube should be secured at this depth, preferably in a horizontal position). The end of the tube should not be in contact with the sides or bottom of the water container. 5. The water container should be placed on a steady surface to prevent movement of the water. Ensure that the level of the water is below the level of the HS23 bubble unit, to avoid the ingress of water. 6. Ensure that the gas supply valve is open and the gas supply regulator is set at 500KPa. 7. Open the river line valve (B) or (E). (Gas should be bubbling from the orifice) 8. Allow the rate to settle for five minutes before timing the bubble rate. 9. With the aid of a stop watch, count the number of bubbles emerging from the orifice in a one minute period. The factory set rate is 27 +/-10% bubbles per minute. 10. For recommended bubble rates (refer to figure 4). 11. To adjust the rate, release the grubscrew in the metering valve knob. (a 1/32" Allen key will be required.) The valve is now free to rotate. 12. Rotate the valve knob to adjust the rate of bubbles emerging from the tube orifice. Clockwise to reduce and anticlockwise to increase to the desired rate. Repeat step 8 and 9 until desired bubble rate is obtained. 13. Tighten the grubscrew in the metering valve knob. (a 1/32" Allen key will be required.) The valve is now shut. 14. Shut the instrument line valve (A), river line valves (B) and (E) and ensure that the purge valve is closed. 15. Disconnect the one metre length tube from the river line fitting of the bubble unit. 16. Reconnect the river line tubing to the bubble unit 17. To continue installation (refer to section V) Page 11

IX INSTALLATION OF POLYTHENE TUBING AND ORIFICE FITTINGS A. General The polythene tubing - SC is provided in three hundred metre rolls. It is an extremely durable material that has been used successfully in this application world wide for many years. The tubing is flexible, easy to handle and can be cut with a knife. The orifice fitting is comprised of a moulded polythene threaded cap, an orifice outlet and a tube fitting. The moulded cap will screw onto a standard 50 nominal bore galvanised pipe. B. Orifice Fittings The site and reference level for the orifice fittings should be resolved before installation proceeds. The length of tubing from the HS23 to the orifice should not exceed 150 metres. A suggested method for installation of the orifice fitting is shown below. The site of the orifice should be positioned in quiet water out of the mainstream to provide protection. The area should be free of silting and aquatic growth. The mounting for the orifice fitting should consist of a section of 50 nominal bore galvanised pipe threaded at one end and secured at the appropriate reference level. The securing of the orifice mounting should be such that it can withstand the forces applied by the flowing stream and associated floating debris. C. Preparation of Orifice Tubing Do not open the carton or remove the strapping. To prepare the roll of tubing for use, cut a 300 mm diameter hole in the centre of the cardboard carton, retrieve the end of the tubing from the middle of the coil, then cut the strapping retaining the coil. This method will reduce the possibility of tangling the tubing. Prevent the ingress of dirt etc. from entering the tubing, by taping up the ends. At no time should the open end of the tubing be permitted to contact the soil. D. Orifice Tubing It is recommended that a trench be dug (minimum 600 deep) between the equipment shelter and the proposed positions of the orifice The trenches should not have any low points in their length; they should have a continuous fall to the river. Page 17
Pull the free end of the coiled tubing to the orifice position laying the tubing in the trench as you go. Refer to diagrams below Remove the protective tape from the end of the tubing, and push the tubing through the 50 nominal bore pipe mounting. Insert the tubing into the tube fitting on the rear of the orifice fitting, ensuring that both ferrules are in place. Tighten the fitting nut. (Refer to the following diagram for tightening procedure). Place the orifice fitting onto the mounting pipe and tighten. Cut the tube at the coil end (tape both ends), ensuring that there is sufficient length to make the joint at the HS23 within the shelter. Check the lay of the tubing in the trench to ensure that it is free of coils and kinks. Under no circumstances should the tube form hollows where moisture can be trapped within the tube. Lay the tubing into position in the equipment shelter as required. Remove the protective tape from the end of river line tube. Insert the end of the tube into the appropriate river line fitting on the HS23 and tighten both fittings. (Refer to diagram for tightening procedure). Open the valve to the orifice. Page 18
X STANDARD ORIFICE Page 19
XI GAS CHAMBER ORIFICE The Hydrological Services Gas Chamber Orifice (GCO1-P) is designed to replace the standard orifice in a gas purge water level measurement system The GCO1 permits the use of extremely low bubble rates with increased sensitivity and near total reduction of lag between actual level rise and orifice pressure. It can also operate satisfactorily when buried under up to 1m of silt. Bubble rates as low as 10 bubbles per minute can be used, thereby reducing gas consumption and prolonging the life of the gas bottle, or reducing the duty cycle operation of the compressor pump on our HS-55/45/40 bubbler water level measurement systems. The main GC01-P chamber is constructed entirely of polyethylene with a copper coated brass screen to deter aquatic growth, and is supplied fitted with a 2" flexible coupling to suit a standard 2 threaded pipe and to allow easy installation as the coupling allows up to 30 degrees of adjustment from horizontal. The GCO1-P has an in-built 1/4 inch NPT hex brass coupling and is supplied with 1/4 inch NPT male to 3/8. The bottom of the chamber includes a revolving copper coated brass screen for cleaning purposes The unit is designed to be fitted to existing installations preferably during low water condition. Refer reverse side for results of comparative tests and installation details.
