J U L Y July 4 Independence Day This is Why Colleen is Our King Winter 2018 Colleen is an active member of the Skiyente Ski Club and Northwest Ski Club Council, having some outstanding accomplishments and awards she says this top s them all being honored as the King Winter Colleen was elected by her peers and awarded the recognition of NWSCC - Woman of The Year 2016, she was then selected at the FWSA 2016 Convention in Arizona as their Far West Councils Woman of the Year. Colleen is one of two other women, Sheri Parshall and Diane Hicks, from the Northwest Ski Club Council to obtain this honor. The selection for this award starts with a six-page application provided by Far West Ski Association. The criteria for selection were involvement in seven areas during the past five years ; 1. Participation in snow sports 2. Club Leadership, Council/Race League Leadership, FWSA/ FWRA Leadership 3. National Involvement, Knowledge & Involvement in Environment, legislative & snow sport Industry 4. Safety 5. Charity & Community Service 6. Personal Experiences 7. Interview presence when answering questions by awarding panel during the convention. Colleen has been an active member in Skiyente Ski Club for over 30 years and has served many positions on their board. The most current was Vice President ; previously she has served 4 years as President, 8 years as Treasurer, plus membership, secretary, NWSCC council representative and race director. She has served on the board of directors for PACRAT (Pacific Area Council Recreational Alpine Team) in the position of Treasurer for 20 years. Colleen has been active in council business, taking the lead in 2016 researching web design businesses in Portland to present the board of directors with a slate of vendors for selection and then contracted to design the new council web site. That same year the NWSCC Board of Directors presented her the opportunity to serve on the board as the Communications Director. Colleen brings many great qualities besides leadership for recognition; she has worked with many charities and volunteered hundreds of hours. In 2016 the charity award recognition submitted by Colleen on Skiyente s behalf won that FWSA Foundation Scholarship/ Charity award. Here are some of the community charities that she has volunteered for; American Cancer Making Strides / Booty for Boobies Trillium Family Services Hillsboro Elks Lodge Xmas Food and Toys / reaching over 681 adults, 2048 children and 109 infants Mt. Hood Museum Steiner Cabin Tours / Museum Fund Raiser Night Room by Room Charity Golf / Hornbeck Children s Hospital Toys for Tots Silent Auction and Toys / Local SW Community distribution Being active in the Snow Industry she has worked at the OSIA events like SkiFever & Snowboard Show and Snowvana for many years promoting club skiing and racing at all levels. She was instrumental in keeping the council and clubs updated on the US26 Mt. Hood Safety Project and construction schedule as it effected the skiing community. If you re a racer you have met Colleen on the top of the course or in the timing shack each race, being active in safety for all racers whether it s the placement of gates or the B-netting to insure novice and advance racers enjoy their participation in racing. The Masters Race in March Masters Mania on Mount Hood is another volunteer position as the registrar and treasurer, along with providing document compliance as required by USSA Masters and PNSA for National FIS scoring. 3

4 July 20 weekend Summer Function LADIES NIGHT AT SKIBOWL $24 Ski every Tuesday night from 3:00pm. Drawings too, at 8:00 in the Beer Stube Colleen not only enjoys her time on Mt Hood skiing and racing with Skiyente sisters but plays on multiple 4.0 USTA Tennis teams through West Hills Racquet Club, golfs with a 13 handicap for the Forest Hills Lady Golf League who won the OGA Portland WIP Championship in For many years she has worked for ODOT Region I as an Administrative Executive Support Specialist. She has used the organizational and scheduling skills gained from volunteer and work experiences to make sure spending precious time with her husband Mark, 4 children and 7 grandchildren come first. Memories are what we share with those we love and will one day be my legacy. 6 Ski with Skiyente in March Meet up to ski with Skiyente sisters by using our private Skiyente Facebook page. I found it more confusing to make an entry on Skiyente than my own Facebook page. Here s what I found: Search: Skiyente on your Facebook page Group comes up in the middle section Click the Skiyente group Discussion is highlighted in the side bar and your name/photo will show with Write something Here s where you invite someone to ski with you on a SwS day or any day. Make your meet-up plans on the FB page. March 8, Thursday March 17, Saturday March 22, Thursday March 31, Saturday Bottles and Cans for More Moolah Are you still collecting beverage bottles and cans? Since January 1, 2018, all beverages except distilled liquor, wine, dairy or plant- based milks, infant formula, and meal replacement beverages have an Oregon refund value of 10 cents. That means our fundraiser will bring in more moolah, IF you bring the bottles to the General Meetings in your green Bottle Drop bags. Sandi will have more bags at the meetings. 7 Skiing Display from Prehistoric to Present Location: Mt Hood Cultural Center and Museum, Government Camp This spectacular display continues through June. Long before the invention of the wheel, humans used skis for winter transportation. The entire history of skiing, including the journey from Scandinavia to the Pacific Northwest, is on display at the Mt. Hood Museum in the traveling exhibit Winter Comes: Oregon s Nordic Ski History. It will be on display through June. Skiyente Sisters to Walk the Runway at the Museum Date: March 31, 6:30 8:30 pm Locations: Mt Hood Cultural Center & Museum EXTRA SPACE?? Sandi Shaub and Jeannie Hummel are planning a road trip to Northeast Oregon and Southeast Washington for the Summer Function. We ll create a long weekend of July 20. Far West s 86 th Annual Convention The Far West Ski Association invites all snow sports enthusiasts to attend its 86 th Annual Convention, to be held at the Atlantis Casino Resort Spa, June 7-10,

8 Delegates will be busy throughout Convention Weekend discussing programs in public affairs, skier safety, ski heritage, athletic scholarships, racing, communications, travel, council development, ski industry and community outreach. The event will be hosted by the Bay Area Snow Sports Council and Sierra League and Council. The Silent Auction &Trade Show gives attendees the opportunity to bid on ski and travel packages. This event is open to the public and there is no cost to attend, so we are hoping for a large turnout. The rest of the weekend will be filled with Education Sessions and Public Affairs sessions on Saturday morning and afternoon, followed by our Awards Banquet on Saturday evening, recognizing outstanding club members and industry partners. Sunday winds up with our Annual Meeting and Elections.
