1 C h i c a g o N o m a d s S k i C l u b N e w s l e t t e r February 1, 2018 Volume 57 Issue 1 the Prez Sez...Bob - Grouch - Klawitter Wow! It s February already. We ve been on some ski trips, watched a lot of football, some hockey and ever a little basketball. What else is there to do? How about trying cross country or shoeing or snowmobiling? A great time to catch up on those books you were going to read last year. Planning the coming spring fishing trip or the summer canoe trip. Whatever else you decide to do with your time. Perhaps thinking ahead to the club s coming elections. Can you give back a little of your time to help run the club? Put your name in the hat for a position on the board. The jobs are not that hard, we ve all done similar things in our own lives and if you get elected there will always be former members who have held the job to guide you and help get you started. All you need to give is a little of your time and some effort. Elected positions this year will be President, Secretary, Social Director and Mid-west Trip Director. All members on the board receive their dues paid during their term and additionally paid dues for a matching term as served. Plus discounts on ski trips. And some refreshments at board meetings. The club gives to you, it s time to give a little back. As it is written, So shall it be. - Grouch Social Meeting 1st Wednesday of every month Joe Daniel s S. Harlem, Palos Heights 7:30 p.m.

2 Vice President - Brad Briar As some of you may know, I grew up in Colorado. I started skiing when I was 5 years old and still remember my dad having to carry me halfway down the mountain the first time he let me go to the top. On weekend mornings my parents would wake my brothers and I up early to head up to the slopes. As a kid, skiing was a family outing. When I got a little older and could drive, I would drive my brother up or go with some close friends or by myself. Ski clubs were never something I thought about because I didn t see the need for them. I had no idea what I was missing out on. I moved to the Chicago area in 2010 and having relocated to the flatlands I thought that my skiing days were over. It took a few years being here before I ran across a meetup to watch a Bears game with a ski club. What a truly fortunate find that turned out to be for me. Heather introduced herself and the other Nomads and I knew I was in good company. Finding and joining this club has been a true blessing for me. The trips I have gone on with the Nomads have been so special to me and the people I ve met since joining this club are becoming some very dear friends. Growing up on the big mountains out west I never realized how much fun the Midwest trips could be. Not because of the size of the mountain or the challenge of the terrain, but because of the quality of the people in this and other clubs. It s not just the ski trips though, it s the get-togethers with people with the same passion for living. The Halloween party s and go kart racing. Watching a 78-year-old ski racer sit and have a drink and long conversation with a 23-year-old snowboarder about their day on the slopes. People from diverse backgrounds that all come together because of this love for sliding down a snow-covered hill. There are others out there like me that are looking for something to belong to. As a club we face some challenges that the club did not have to face in the past. It s not hard to find a great deal on your own for a ski trip. But those deals don t come with the camaraderie and fellowship that a club trip provides. I listen to the old stories and I know that there are a lot of good times to be had. There s a lot of passion for this club. This club has provided so much to me in such a short time and I plan on working hard to help bring in the next generation of members to join us. Midwest Trip Director Mike Radice Nomads! Sad to say that the rest of the Midwest trips had to be canceled due to lack of participation. I understand that we have lost a good part of our Midwest skiers. Next season we will only run two Midwest trips, a 1 day trip and a 3 day trip. In the meantime we need to continue to work on recruiting new members. Your Midwest trip director, Mike Brad

8 Nomad Family Trip Zermatt Resort, Utah The 14 th annual Nomad Family Western Ski Trip went to the Zermatt Resort in Midway, Utah on December 30 thru January 5, with 41 Adults, 7 Young-Adults/Teenagers, and 2 Children for a total of 50. Once again it was a great trip with 5 days of skiing and 6 nights and the kids didn t miss any school. Our departure on Sunday went smoothly with no lost luggage and an on time arrival into Salt Lake City Airport. However with a mild snow storm and a long grocery stop we ended up getting to the resort a little later than planned. It also took longer than expected to get our keys and have our luggage brought up to our rooms. In the end we had a nice Welcoming Party and I had a wonderful time sorting thru and handing out multiple day lift tickets to Sundance, Deer Valley, and Park City. (Why can t they be interchangeable?) Overall the weather and snow was pretty good, and just a little cold in the morning for a few days, but no wind. On Monday, we skied Sundance which is a nice quaint resort which had great atmosphere and some pretty good skiing. On Tuesday thru Thursday, the Nomads split up and were shuttled to Deer Valley and Park City; and on Friday we all went to Park City. It would have been nice to have more shuttle times, but the rides were short, we had dedicated shuttles for the Nomads, and we still had plenty of ski time. On Wednesday night some of us were lucky enough to get into the Crater which is a hot springs in a cave which was across the street from the resort. On Thursday evening we had a great club dinner in the Yurt (a heated round tent with a wood burning stove) at the Back 40 that was quite unique. Unfortunately we couldn t have our traditional leftover/awards party on Friday night since no one had a big enough condo, but many of us took an extended stay at Park City on Friday night to have dinner there and do a little shopping. On Friday we had a great day for our Club Nastar Race. Overall we had good participation with 18 of 23 racers winning metals (9 silver & 9 bronze). Unfortunately some of our racers didn t find the course due to their lost guides. Congratulations to my son Alex Clausius and my daughter Irina Clausius for being our speed king and queen. Thanks to everyone who participated. (Race results are shown below). All and all this was another successful Family Trip, with good food everywhere we went, good snow, good times, and a wonderful place to stay. Thanks again to my family and everyone who supported this

11 Highlights from Taos Ski Valley Ski Trip with Duneland Ski Club January 2019 By Margie Williams Kudos to our group of leaders from the Nomads (Heather and Brad) and Duneland (Cheryl and Joe) for a fun, well planned, and executed trip. Using cars, planes, buses and vans, the 10 Nomads joined by 24 Duneland members safely arrived at the Snake Dance Condos at Taos Ski Valley. The staff spoiled us forever, delivering our skis, luggage and groceries to our units! We had a great time getting to know the members of both clubs. The kickoff meeting helped us to quickly get ready for a great week full of social gatherings on the slopes, après skis to dinners at Roger s and Diane s (general manager) to dinner at the historic restaurant on site. The location of the condos right next to the Lift 1 was fantastic! With locker storage on the ground floor within minutes one was quickly whisked up the mountain. Many of the club members benefitted from the superb Ski Week Lessons. Taos Ski Valley is the only resort in North America to offer an immersive week-long learning experience. The lessons began with each skier sharing their goals for the week, and demonstrating their skiing ability with a short run. We were then placed into groups of 6 to 7 members with similar skiing abilities. For 6 days, we met from 9:45 am -12 N. We all progressed to new levels of skiing the TED Technology talk, critiques from instructors and peers, and videotaping all making the difference! Just ask one of us to show you our videotape! See the club Facebook page for awesome photos that capture the fun! Ask Steve Young if he is driving that semi down the slope. Ask any Nomad to share their favorite skiing tip from the week! Afternoons were spent with slope gatherings and conquering the blue and black runs that Taos is known for. The cold weather (single digits) and blustery winds didn t deter some of the hardiest skiers! There is chatter among the Nomads that we can t wait to go back again! Stay tuned for future trips!!
