4 EXECUTIVE OFFICER REPORT 2015/16 was another great year for Surfing Tasmania as the organization continues to build a statewide footprint. However, the challenge of sustainability looms large and real for the coming year after a $10,000 loss for the financial year 2015/16. The Executive has started work in this area and Surfing Tasmania will soon be able to report to members of developments and plans. Key strategic achievements for the year include: Re-signing major sponsor HIF Insurance Fund, Updated Strategic Plan , 12 Supporter Memberships, new SUP based Boardrider Club (BRC) in Burnie, $8000 Sport and Recreation Grant for participation and coaching, a $4500 RACV Community Grant for new first aid equipment and distribution of a monthly E-newsletter to our data base of members, sponsors, media etc. Key competiton and coaching achievements include : Kieren Thomas and Chris Fullston finishing in third place at the National Titles in their respective Longboard Divisions and Micheal Paxton in fourth in his final. Hamish Renwick won his first Tasmanian Open Title and Bella Goward the U16, U18 and U21 State Titles. Bella and Liam Viney were selected for the Layne Beachley and MR Camps. Rudy Davis, Bella Goward and Liam Viney were also selected for the new Hurley HPC Surf Groms Journey camps. Surfing Australia High Performance Coach Samba Mann conducted a High Performance Camp for our top juniors and 6 newly accredited Level 2 Surf Coaches and 5 new Level 1 Judges were put through their courses. Sadly during the year former State President Greg Froud unexpectedly passed away. STAS member Glenn Saltmarsh attended his Port Macquarie funeral and spoke at Greg s wake. See Glenn s.page 4. 6 GREG FROUD RIP In early May 2016 former Surfing NSW CEO and Surfing Tasmania President Greg Froud tragically passed away surfing near Port Macquarie. Greg left behind his young 6 yo son Ripley. Ripley has tragically lost both parents with his mother, losing a battle with cancer a few years back. Surfing Tasmania member Glenn Saltmarsh attended Greg s funeral and spoke at the wake on behalf of Surfing Tasmania and himself. Glenn penned some memories of Greg s time in Tasmania. GREG FROUD - TAS STORY - Glen Saltmarsh. Greg Froud's Tasmanian years, Greg first rented a unit opposite the Devonport river, then moving to Ulverstone, He lived for a while at gravelly Beach or Deviot a very pretty area on the Tamar River, before moving back to Ulverstone when he managed the Pool & Spa business in Devonport, Greg had extensive experience in this industry as I believe it was his father s vocation, Then he moved to Hobart where he met Leslie who was nursing, Greg was managing apprentices during this stage, I met Greg on the banks of Nettley Bay at Marrawah, my brother Rob Introduced us. Greg wasn't short of words or stories, neither was I, we both loved music and had both had years of running surf contests, we naturally hit it off and became very good friends. Greg got involved in Surfing Tas & soon became President, and assisted me in running the west coast classic for a number of years, Greg just loved helping out, assisting in any way needed, often to his own demise in a heat. The Cold water classic arrived and Greg organised all the equipment needed, tents P.A system tables chairs, axles to hold the tents down in west coast storms, sourced it all from Hobart and towed the tandem trailer loaded to the hilt up from Hobart to Marrawah & back with his land cruiser. He got it bogged in the sand at Bluff one day, the trailer must of weighed three plus tonne. Greg ran the support crew for the Cold Water Classic & of course knew the connections being Rob Bain & Matt Wilson. Greg worked his butt off on this event as he aways did giving a hundred percent assisting the other organisers in making it a success. We had some great surf trips, Swansea Points, Ahberg, Lighthouse & managed to score Bluff Reef one year on our shared birthday the 16th of October. The CWC first year Greg stayed with me at the shack at Green point, Marrawah, John Boyse & Sticky Richardson both ex surfing Tas Presidents also stayed at times, Man we had some fun, absolutely great times. Greg was a great guy, a good friend and truly a contributor not just a participator! 6 P a g e

9 2016 SCHOOLS SURFING CHAMPIONSHIP The 2016 Tasmanian Schools Surfing Championships were held at Clifton beach with honours being shared around the State. Lizzy Stokely ( St Micheals Collegiate) from Bruny Island dominated the Under 19 Division 1 girls while Under 16 Division 1 boys was won by Liam Viney ( Marist College ) from the NW coast. The event was held in perfect late summer weather with head high surf which was ideal for the 150 competitors ranging from beginners to state representatives. The Junior State Team will be selected from these results and the final round of the Surfing Tasmania Junior State Championships in May to compete at the Australian School Surfing Titles in Philip Island Victoria in late November. Thank you to all parents, teachers and volunteers from Surfing Tasmania, Coastrider Surf Academy and the local board riders clubs who helped with judging and running competition banks. 11 2015/16 STATE TEAM REPORTS OPEN/AGE/LONGBOARD STATE TEAM COFFS HARBOUR NSW. The 2016 Open State Team competed at the Surf Festival National Championships at Coffs Harbour over the first 2 weeks of August with lots of nationals experience and skill. Six Surfing Tasmania members flew the flag at Coffs chasing personal glory; U/18 L/Board-Kieren Thomas, Open Men-Hamish Renwick, Mark Cadle-O45, Scott Weinreich O/50, Michael Paxton-O/40 L/Board, Chris Fullston-O/60 L/Board. Al Thomas and Mark Cadle acted as Team Managers. Final results: 6 quarter finalists, 4 semi finalists, 3 finalists with Kieren and Chris both finishing in third place and Micheal Paxton in fourth. This was the best performance by a Tassie team in many years. See stories below KIZ THOMAS WINS BRONZE IN NATIONAL U18 FINAL. Tasmania's great run at this year's Surf Festival peaked today with Clifton Beach's Kieren Thomas putting in a dominating performance in the U18 National Longboard Final at Coffs Harbour. Kieren was leading until the last 5 minutes before finishing 3rd. He was second in his heat and semi and progressed into the final as a strong chance to take out the title with his big sweeping arches, cutbacks and lip bashes. Winning the final was Frank Murphy from NSW, Nick Brewer from Qld second, Kiz third and Khi Williams from Sth Australia. Only 1.5 points separated 1st, 2nd and 3rd! Kieren is the second Tasmanian to medal in this event previously won by our 2016 Open Shortboard State Champ Hamish Renwick a few years ago. Congratulations Kiz. Kieren Thomas. 12 CHRIS FULLSTON WINS BRONZE IN NATIONAL O60s FINAL. Scamander's Chris Fullston put in an outstanding performance in a star studded field to claim third place in the O60 Longboard Final in small but competitive surf today at Coffs Harbour. Chris was upbeat about his efforts against a top crew of experienced surfers including the current champion and held second place for a while. " I had plenty of waves but was hunting a larger wave to better suit my surfing and weight against smaller more agile competitors" he said. " The Tassie team has put in such a great effort this year and we are already looking forward to next year. Hopefully we will encourage a few more to come". Chris said the team members had enjoyed a great trip, with plenty of great surf and social activities with other teams. Michael Paxton surfing in his first national final in the O/40s also put in a spirited effort finishing a close fourth and said he always felt as though he was only one good wave score away from a medal. He has thoroughly enjoyed his trip, the competition and social times and had lots of good ideas he wants to implement back home to stimulate more interest and competition. Congratulations to both from all Tassie surfers boys. Chris Fullston. Pic courtesy STAS Micheal Paxton. Pic courtesy STAS 12 P a g e

13 JUNIOR STATE TEAM - NTH STRADBROKE ISLAND, QUEENSLAND. The week long Surf Dive n Ski National Junior Championships were highlighted by outstanding surf conditions from day 1 to day 7. The Tasmanian team surfed well enough to out point South Australia for the third year running finishing in 5th place. Check the full RESULTS at the website below. Team Co Captain Lizzy Stokley won her second prestigious Isabel Lethem Award for Sportsmanship and Potential at the championships on Nth Stradbroke Island, Queensland. She surfed strongly to finish in the semi - finals of the Mark Richards Schools Division where she represented her school St Micheal s Collegiate College in Hobart. Lizzy displayed her competiveness by dominating her early rounds before just missing out on a semi-final berth of the Layne Beachley Surfing Australia U/18 Girls Division. Philip Island in Victoria is the venue for the 2016 Championships. Check this link to see an interview with Lizzy on the Day 1 video during the event. She also features surfing in the yellow top. 14 SURF AND SUN LURE STOKELY TO HPC IN In a first for Surfing Tasmania, multi-talented young surfer Lizzy Stokely will head north to Queensland next year chasing her dreams of becoming a successful surfer on the national and international stage. In the midst of her year 12 and Head Prefect duties at St Micheal s Collegiate School Lizzy has been offered the opportunity to train with some of Australia s best surfers and coaches at Surfing Australia s world leading High Performance Centre at Casuarina in northern NSW. Surfing Australia s National Coach Andy King said yesterday, Lizzy has been offered the opportunity to join our squads due to her outstanding surfing, athletic abilities and potential to succeed in the rough and tumble world of competitive surfing. She has a great record as a finalist in the National Junior Titles over past years as well as winning an unprecedented two Isabell Letham Awards for sportsmanship and potential. Not only has Lizzy created a successful competitive record in state and national junior surfing but her fearless nature has seen her take to big wave surfing at the legendary Shipsterns Bluff this year, adding to her credentials, King said. Lizzy s will work under top national coaches at the High Performance Centre. King said, Lizzy will be mentored and coached in one of our squads and also come into our strength and conditioning program. One of Lizzies goals will be to compete in major Qualifying Series Events around Australia over 2017 to further develop her competitive, strategic and technique skills. Lizzy is also sponsored by major global surf brand ROXY in recognition of her talents. Lizzy will shift to the Gold Coast in January to begin what may be an exciting international future for Bruny Island s queen of the surf. Lizzy Stokely tackles Shipstern Bluff.
