3 Kendrick Louis claims his National Iron man crown With warmer weather on the way and Pool titles now complete this edition of Surf Sports magazine brings you highlights from all of our national Championships. The Aussies this year saw us trekking west to sensational Scarborough beach and it certainly didn t disappoint. For us photographers we love the west with the perfect light early in the day and Scarborough sure turned on great surf, especially for the Youth where we captured so many action packed images. As the event progressed there were warnings of possible storms so our risk management team made the decision to bring the major finals forward and finish the event a day early great decision as the weather closed in on the Saturday evening. The IRB Titles were held at Thirroul Beach south of Sydney, and although the temperatures were chilly the competition was hot. A rising surf saw the cancellation of racing on the Saturday meaning the championships were run on a reduced program. The Sunday finals were sensational and a big thanks to the Thirroul club for doing such a great job in hosting the event. Rounding off our coverage again with the Pool titles at the South Australian Aquatic & leisure center in Adelaide, soon to be the pool venue for the upcoming Lifesaving World Championships in November. The weather out side might have been very average but what a great venue with many competitors relishing competition at the pool in preparation for LWC2018. We also bring you coverage of the Manufacturers Cup from Currumbin and a must read on stress fractures from nick Marshall. The next edition of Surf Sports Mag is due just before Xmas which will celebrate Coolie Gold and the season opening, in the mean time I hope you enjoy this edition of the mag, and good luck to all those testing themselves in the upcoming Coolangatta Gold remember to keep smiling and see you on the beach. 4 Taplin Aussies coverage by: Hanson Sports Media Photos: Harvpix, Harv, Kate Czerny, John Veage, Shanta Henderson The Mighty Vikings, Taplin gold Champion ClubVikings turn back time with first Taplin Relay title in 40 years The 2018 Aussies could well have been a line in the sand moment or even a changing of the guard year with new faces and clubs putting their hands up in the battle for those elusive gold medals. For some it was a new beginning and others a Tina Turner moment turning back time, as was the case for the Currumbin Beach Vikings in the Taplin Relay 40 years in fact to 1978 at Kingscliff when the Vikings last won the Australian Championship Taplin Relay. Since its inception in 1974 the Taplin Relay has been the race that every club wants to win the race that pulls a club together like none other the combined show of strength across all surfing disciplines. And for the Currumbin Vikings, victory in 2018 was a salute for the future with two members of the Open team swim star Ky Kinsella the kid from Coffs Harbour who can ride a ripple and kid dynamo board paddler Corey Fletcher - both backed up after spearheading the Under 19 team to victory. After the final board leg in the stunning open win, Vikings Club members swamped final paddler Fletcher who staved off challengers from Trigg island and Newport to claim a Last time we won it in 1978 with a team led by an Olympian (Steve Holland) and world champions, this time we ve done it with a bunch of kids. 2 ssm

The open women s Taplin relay victory spearheaded by new Iron champion lana Rodgers with her Noosa Heads teammates Jordan Mercer and Electra Outram, probably surpassed the surf lifesaving success of her father Greg Rogers, who won a surf teams gold medal in 1967 and a surf race bronze medal, as well as representing Australia in the pool at the 1968 and 1972 Olympics. Noosa completed a near-perfect Taplin race, with Mercer leading out on the ski, Rogers holding the advantage and then Outram, an under-17 competitor who has contested countless races this week, pulled away from her older rivals before celebrating on a booming wave that carried the team to victory ahead of Sunshine Coast rivals Maroochydore and Alexandra Headland. n Womens Taplin winners Noosa The open women s Taplin relay victory spearheaded by new Iron champion lana Rodgers with her Noosa Heads teammates Jordan Mercer and Electra Outram, probably surpassed the surf lifesaving success of her father Greg Rogers... 8 Irons Kendrick Louis Pleasure worth all the pain as Kendrick adds his name to who s who of Ironman champions Kendrick Louis has known pleasure and pain on the sands of Scarborough Beach but nothing as exhilarating as winning the Australian open Ironman championship. I really worked the start on the board and got out clean. I just had to get the job done. When I picked up the last little wave the emotions took over. Not only is it the first open Ironman title for the 27-year-old but also the first for the famous Manly club that has had winners in almost all events but had failed to claim the blue riband race. Louis held off the challenges of Coolangatta Gold king Ali Day (Surfers Paradise) and eight-time champion Shannon Eckstein (Northcliffe) after being near the front for the entire journey and then breaking away on a wave in the final board leg. He is the first new winner of the Ironman since 2013, while there was also a changing of the guard in the open Ironwoman final as Noosa Heads Lana Rogers raced away to her first Aussies title with a magnificent victory over retiring two-time winner Rebecca Creedy (Kurrawa) and rising Sydney star Lizzie Welborn (North Bondi). Louis won the under-19 Ironman title twice at Scarborough in 2008 and 2009, but also suffered one of his 6 ssm

10 Above: Kendrick claims the title. lowest moments on the West Australian sand when he suffered a knee injury that threatened his career. That pain was banished from his mind as he enjoyed the biggest win of what has been a topsy-turvy career. It s 10 years since I won my last Aussies Ironman title here in the under-19s, it s a bloody bittersweet victory, I can tell you, he said. I think over the last few years I ve really learnt to harness and control my emotions. I ran around Dan Collins (Redhead) and overtook Shannon in that transition into the board and I thought I ve still got something in me. I really worked the start on the board and got out clean. I just had to get the job done. When I picked up the last little wave the emotions took over. Louis was near the front of the pack after the opening ski leg and then moved to the lead in the swim before a wave brought a host of competitors alongside him. On the board, he and Eckstein moved clear and looked to have the race between them until Day stormed into calculations just before the winning wave carried Louis to the beach as he pumped his fists in the air. For ironman winner Louis it has taken him a decade to turn his under 19 Australian titles from 2008 an 2009 into open gold a decade later again berating Ali Day as he did back in 09 and eight time champion Shannon Eckstein. Taking a leaf out of unstoppable US swimmer Kate Ledecky s book, 27-year-old Louis wanted to lead from the outset and that s what he did from his opening heat until he crossed the line to add his name among the greats but the first from the famous Manly club in the 50 odd year history of the event. Lana s breakthrough for Noosa s golden day Lana Rogers was also able to celebrate her breakthrough Ironwoman victory after opening a winning lead with a powerhouse swim and holding it on the board. I never thought that would happen, the 22-year-old said. Aussies is a completely different ball game to our entire season and its anyone s race on anyone s day and you ve just got to go for it, and that s what I managed to do today. Rogers was hoping to do well enough on the ski, her weakest discipline, to stay in contention in the tricky surf, and it was mission accomplished when she moved into the swim alongside early leader Jemma Smith (Umina) and Creedy. She swam well enough to move ahead of the other two, with just a narrow lead over Creedy in the transition to the board. In the next leg, Rogers then paddled to a good lead and rode home on a wave that confirmed her triumph. Rogers, the 22-year-old daughter of two-time Olympian and former Clovelly surfing great Greg Rogers, was the popular pick all weekend and delivered in spades with what was close to the perfect race dominating through all disciplines and winning Noosa s 8 ssm

16 Skis Billy Bain flies Mooloolaba colours to take single ski gold The Mooloolaba cap once synonymous with Australian Championship glory returned to the winners circle at Scarborough when Billy Bain snatched a dramatic victory in the open men s single ski. Billy Bain The U19 race saw the amazing Jemma Smith claim gold from a powerful group of up and coming paddlers with Manly silver and Kurrawa bronze. The famous maroon and white stripes is undergoing a rebuilding phase in surf sports and only the smallest team to attend an Aussies made the trek to Scarborough. Bain, who a been with the club since his Nipper days and has been a rising star on both ski and kayak, showed the spirit and determination to charge at the line in a thrilling finish to edge out Newport s Mitch Trim and Avoca's Olympic kayaker and world champion Riley Fitzsimmons. The North Bondi cap was certainly front and centre with Olympian Jimmy Walker in charge of an exciting group of youngsters who dominated the Under 19 and Under 17 divisions with Jackson Collins, son of another Olympic kayak medallist Danny Collins ahead of the pack. Jackson showed all of his pedigree to win the Under 19 single ski final from Manly s Ethan Neville and another North Bondi boy Zach Havard taking the bronze. Zach s brother Noah was the dominant force in the Under 17s, winning the gold medal in the single ski ahead of Fletcher Armstrong (Avoca Beach) and William Jones (Byron Bay) before combining with Jackson Collins and Jimmy s son Ben Walker to take the Under 19 single ski relay and the double with Collins as well as a member of the Under 17 Taplin Relay with Hamish Donkin and Charlie Verco. In the women s arena Northcliffe paddler Danielle McKenzie delivered a powerhouse performance to take gold ahead of female competitor of the carnival Jemma Smith from Umina and Kurrawa s Bonnie Hancock claiming bronze. 17 Danielle McKenzie countries best junior paddlers competing the U17 race saw a strong field contest the medals, Maroochydore s Alicia Fay claiming gold from Sunshine and Maroochydore. Double skis and the heavy shore break took a toll on many crews. In the open men s Trigg Island duo Daniel Humble and Reece baker claimed gold with North Burleigh silver and Northcliffe bronze while in the U19s it was North Bondi s Noah Havard pairing with Jackson Collins to take Gold with Trigg Island silver and Newport bronze. The ladies race was a cracker and smiles all round from Northcliffe duo Danielle McKenzie and Georgia laird with Alexandra Headland and Wanda filling the minor places. The U19 s saw Alexandra Headlands combo of Lucinda Kelly and Mikayla Williams with the golden smile and Maroochydore then Mermaid Beach filling the places. n Jemma Smith Ski paddlers in thrilling beach sprint finish to relay Scarborough s soft sand is tough to get through even for the most light-footed of runners, so a stride-for-stride race down the beach for burly ski paddlers Nick Dawe and Todd Brewer was almost a cruel way to end the open men s surf ski relay final. But it made for a thrilling finish as the Dawe edged Manly to victory over Brewer s Trigg Island. Brewer s team had led for much of the race, paddling powerfully and getting the best of the thumping shore break that made racing challenge for all competitors. Following on the good work of team-mates Dan Humble and Reece Baker, Brewer set out on the third leg of the race with a 10-metre lead over Dawe after Ironman Kendrick Louis had brought the Manly from eighth to second in a powerhouse paddle. As the shore break played havoc with the final paddlers, Dawe made it through and set off after Brewer, a paddler he knows well since they competed together in a K2 kayak. Dawe took a good lead on the way back to the beach but Brewer used a runner to catch up again as they jumped off their skis for the run to the finish. It was a grinding sprint, with Dawe initially in front and then Brewer just passing his rival close to the line before a desperate lunge gave Manly the win by the slimmest of margins. Newport made it a Sydney Northern Beaches double in the open ski relays, winning a gruelling race ahead of Burleigh Heads Mowbray Park and Northcliffe as the shore break pounded the womens teams. Newport s first paddler, Hannah Minogue, put the team at the head of the field along with Alexandra Headland and Kurrawa, with the three paddlers riding a big wave to the beach. Second paddler Grace Gurr kept Newport close to the lead and then Georgia Miller had to survive the shore dump to move in front and open a winning advantage, even as Burleigh s Allie Britton closed the gap approaching the beach. North Bondi s under-19 team of Jackson Collins, Noah Havard and Ben Walker raced to a massive win after Collins powered to a big lead in the first leg and then Havard and Walker widened the gap. Manly placed second with Avoca third. n ssm 15

Stu McLachlan wriggles his way to board race gold number four and calls time on a great career What a way to finish for Manly s Stu McLachlan, who paddled his way up the annals of the sport for his fourth open board race victory, before calling it a day on his stellar paddling career, which began at Redhead. What a way to finish that s a dream come true with my wife and young one here. Paddling in the famous Manly cap, McLachlan showed all the prowess, all the skill and all of the power of hi unique lay-down style to spearhead a sky-blue quinella with protégé Harrison Stone and Ironman Series winner Matt Bevilacqua (Kurrawa) third. 16 ssm

The women s board was a belter of a race with Ironwoman Hariett Brown (Northcliffe) scoring a well deserved victory over Jordan Mercer (Noosa) and Danielle McKenzie. 21 Surf Races Sloman too fast as Kate spoils Noosa double for history Vikings win Open Surf race finish Noosa s Nick Sloman and Currumbin s Prue Davies both scored history making victories in what were two thrilling open surf race victories. First Sloman and then Davies, thrilled their respective cheer squads with their never say-die finishes which left heart ache for their opponents. Northcliffe s Bailey Armstrong looked certain to add the open surf race to his Under 19 victory before the challengers took advantage of the tricky inshore conditions in a helter-skelter run to the line. First Sloman and then City of Perth s Over 24 Surf Race winner Simon Huitenga came from opposing angles to hit the finish tape simultaneously with Huits hitting the sand. After much deliberation the judges awarded the result to Sloman from Huitenga and Under 17 Surf race winner, Hayden Cotter. The top five swimmers, with Armstrong and Newport s 2017 Open Surf Race winner, Ollie Signorini, also in the mix, are the main contenders for the km marathon swim for the Tokyo Olympics. Another Olympic contender, Noosa s Kareena Lee, also looked to have the open women s surf race wrapped up, leading the field into the break, only to see Currumbin Vikings young gun Davies, propel past her on a wave. A testing shore break ssm 19

22 Prue Davies Lee, who has had serious knee injuries over the past 12 months, put up a brave showing but the younger, stronger legs of Davies made a b-line for the finish, showing all of her shallow water skills to bet home two-time champion Georgia Miller (Newport) and open board race winner Harriet Brown (Northcliffe), with Lee fourth. In the the U19 division Northcliffe men matched the double with victory in the corresponding events, with Bailey Armstrong leading the way by crossing the line first in both races to make it a winning start to the champion club s Aussies campaign. Taylor and Northcliffe s first gold came in the under-19 final that saw her match strokes with Manly s Naomi Scott at the front of the field, with Scott crossing the finish line just in front. Taylor s second-place finish combined with the efforts of Tahlia Kollen, Imogen Rees and Olivia Corrin to give Northcliffe a comfortable win in the points-based race, ahead of Wanda and the Kurrawa. In the men steam races, Armstrong 20 ssm was unstoppable, although a nasty stumble in a hole near the finish of the open race could have proved disastrous. What looked an ugly fall seemed to have no effect on the lanky swimmer who was still able to bounce up and cross the line ahead of teammate Shannon Eckstein, with Caine Eckstein in fourth. However, with fourth swimmer Lucas Allan placing 20th, there was a nervous wait for the Northcliffe quartet as the sums were done to see if they had won. In the end they were three points ahead of second-placed Newport, with Surfers Paradise third. The victory continues a mammoth winning run for the Shannon Eckstein-led open surf team, which is unbeaten since 2006, with the Ironman champion the one constant member. In the under-19 final, Armstrong led home clubmates Mitchell Coombes, Toby Wilson and Riley Clout to defeat the club s B team and City of Perth. Meanwhile Maroochydore had a golden start to the open championships with three wins including two gold medals to Under 17 star Tiarnee Massie. They struck gold with gun open Cotter adding the under 17 surf race to his win in the Under 17 2km Ocean Swim. Cotter, an Australian open water champion, who clocked the fastest 2km time of the Championships will also have a crack at the Open surf race where he will run into defending champion from Ollie Signorini (Newport) and Under 19 champion Nick Sloman, now with Noosa. While the club s great history in surf teams swimming continued with gold in the Under 17s to Tiarnee Massie, Summer Short, Sarah McGrath and Phoebe Wills-Grace while Tiarnee combined with cousin Jenaya Massie and Alicia Fay to win the under 17 surf teams. Maroochydore claimed the surf teams, ahead of North Bondi and fewllow Sunshine Coast club, Sunshine Beach and the ski relay ahead of Newport and Northcliffe. Kate Thornton came out on top for the Sunshine Coast club in the open women s event, beating Newport s Phoebe Savage and City of Perth s Talia Jakubans. 24 Sorrento s flying plumber Jackson Symonds creates a slice of beach sprint history Beach Sprints & Flags Sorrento s humble beach sprint champion Jackson Symonds charged into Surf Life Saving s history books, becoming the first runner in over 50 years to win a fourth Australian title. There was no stopping the flying plumber, who took time of work to attend the official launch, when he locked in his third straight title at Trigg Island. With the Aussies surf events all at Scarborough, the best of the beachies, went toe-for-toe at Trigg, chasing rare Aussies gold. Symonds showed why he is clearly Australia s leading male sprinter, racing to a comfortable win over two-time champion Jordan Caldow (Currumbin) and Conor Loughnan (Kurrawa), with Tjimarri Sanderson Milera (Currumbin) fourth and former champion Jake Lynch (Newport) sixth. I m over the moon, just to get one was amazing and for me I wasn t great coming through the juniors and I didn t really hit my straps until seniors when things just clicked into gear so this is pretty special, said Symonds. I really do it because I love it and I have to thank everyone at Sorrento. I could not have done it without them. Symonds is the first to win three consecutive open beach sprint finals since Callum Taylor, who won his first two titles for Collaroy in 1996 and 1997 but ran in the New Zealand cap when he crossed the line first in 1998 so is not the official winner. Meanwhile, in the open women s final it was an emotional Currumbin Viking and 2018 Stawell Gift winner Elizabeth Forsyth who won the gold medal, galloping away from Kurrawa pair Nicole Kay and Bree Masters, with her clubmate and defending champion Olivia Eaton fourth. I am super super excited and I was not expecting that at all, said Forsyth. It s been an amazing season for me, the highs just keep on coming after winning the Stawell Gift. Coming off Stawell I felt a little flat for a week but I started to build up two to three weeks later but I m so happy that it s all come together. In the under-19 men s Charlie Rigby made it an Open-Under 19s double for Sorrento with Michael Hanna (Elouera), fifth in the open men s, winning the silver and Jamee Smith (Wanda) the bronze, while Coogee s Sophie McGovern won the gold in the Under 19 women s from Taylor Stickler (Kurrawa) with the bronze going to Cronulla s Ngaire Hadfield. The under-17s boys saw Mollymook s Sam Zustovic won gold from Callum Scrivens (Grange) and Jack Musika (Coogee Beach, WA), while in the girls final Cronulla s Chloe Mannix- Power won gold from Stephanie Welsh (Kurrawa) and Sydney Rafferty (Sorrento). The leading Australian clubs Kurrawa and Currumbin continued their rivalry in the relays. Kurrawa (Bree Masters, Taylor Stickler Casie Fyall and Nicole Kay) stormed home to win the women s over Currumbin, giving Masters the gold medal double while the Vikings edged out Kurrawa in a thrilling photo finish, leading all the way for the men s title which saw Currumbin victors for the third year running with Jordan Caldow, Ryan Bedford, Tjimarri Sanderson Milera and Kieran Gordon taking the honours. n Flags There was also a history-making moment when Currumbin s latest Stawell Gift winner, Elizabeth Forsyth became the first female or male in Aussies history to win the open beach sprint and beach flags double in a competitive beach area with Kurrawa and Sorrento in dominant form. n ssm 23

27 Lifesaver Relay Alexandra Headlands precision timing for Lifesaver Relay gold There were celebrations all round when Sunshine Coast club Alexandra Headland combined to win the prestigious Lifesaver Relay for the second time in five years at Scarborough Beach. It was a case of everyone delivering and doing what we all knew we could do and it is a very special moment for all of us and the club. And it all came down to 15 seconds in what turned out to be a thrilling finish to the first major final of the day. That was the deficit Alex knew they could pull back after the opening surfboat leg with legendary sweep Steve Davies steering the club s Reserve Grade women s crew. We all agreed if we were 15 seconds behind at the end of the boat then the other legs could peg back the field and that s just how it panned out, said Davies, who was also a member of the Alex team that won at Scarborough in It was a case of everyone delivering and doing what we all knew we could do and it is a very special moment for all of us and the club. Everyone lifted and before the race we had a plan where we believed we had to be and we were spot on, it s so good to win this one for the club. Davies crew played their part before young swim star Coop Williams dived in to mix. Williams tagged board paddler Jett Kenny in a close up fifth and Kenny put in the paddle of his life to put Alex right in the frame as he tagged champion ski paddler James Porter in third. Porter, who was also in the team that won the gold in 2014, flew off the beach alongside Mitchell Trim (Newport) and Cory Hill (Northcliffe), with Currumbin s Hayden White in hot pursuit. By the third turning buoy in the ski leg it was Trim and Porter going stroke for stroke before Porter lifted on the paddle back to the beach to give young beach sprinter Thomas Baker just enough to give Alex the gold medal edge. Baker took off on the final 100m beach sprint to secure the gold from Northcliffe and Newport. n ssm 25

29 Youth competitors faced a challenging surf The under-15 Ironwoman title was won in emphatic fashion by Alexandra Headland s Tayla Halliday ahead of Sunshine Beach s Sarah Perkins and Newport s Alex Lefevre. Competing just 1.5km from his home beach, Savage gave himself a shot at victory with a determined swim leg that cut into a handy lead Dixon had created in the opening board leg. Dixon was still in the lead as the pair made it to the beach but step by step down the finishing straight Savage pulled level and then into the lead. This is so good, it s absolutely amazing, Savage said. Since last year my swim has got a whole lot better and my board has improved too. I think I m a lot better Ironman now. 32 Masters Time might have slowed them... but competitive fire still burns inside the bodies of the athletes in the Masters Championships at the Australian Surf Lifesaving titles at Scarborough beach in Perth. Guy Andrews A walk along the beachfront during the two days of the Masters carnival is both a step back in time and a social catch-up, with surf stars such as Grant Kenny, Nathan Smith and Guy Andrews enjoying the chance to speak to old friends and rivals as much as they still love to race. Andrews, the 1993 Australian Ironman champion, became the years Australian Ironman champion today, beating Jason Cross (Thirroul) and Glenn Eldon (Cottesloe) to take the gold medal Wearing the maroon and white colours of Gold Coast club Tallebudgera, he was also a placegetter in the surf and board races but winning the Ironman title was his main aim for the day. The 47-year-old says the skills developed over years of racing at the highest level have quickly come back to him and allowed him to enjoy racing in the surf again. Andrews placed second in the years surf race behind another great of the past, West Australian Olympian from Barcelona in 1992, Deane Pieters, providing an Olympic flavour in the men s events with Pieters, Grant Kenny (Alexandra Headland) and Jim Walker (North Bondi) in the thick of the action. Pieters, a member of the 1992 Barcelona swim team, chalked up two wins yesterday in the years surf race and rescue tube and helped Trigg Island to gold in the Taplin It was 27 years ago at Scarborough that Pieters won the Australian open belt race championship his second in succession wearing the sky blue cap of Manly. It was 27 years ago at Scarborough that Pieters won the Australian open belt race championship his second in succession wearing the sky blue cap of Manly. At Scarborough in 1991 he also won gold for Manly in the open surf teams, combining with Scott Miller, Simon Upton and Craig Riddington in one of the all-time great surf swimming quartets. Prolific Masters gold medallist Paul Lemmon of Terrigal again won his Iron final ahead of Craig Chapman (Surfers Paradise) and Scott Thomson (North Bondi). Lemmon also won gold in the board and surf races. Lee Vrolycks Dori Miller Bondi s golden gals Master all comers in Scarborough beach blitz Bondi s Laura Thurtell won nine gold medals and two silvers in a dominant performance in the years age group at the Australian Surf Lifesaving Masters Championship at Scarborough Beach. Not far behind in the medal stakes was clubmate Dori Miller, who won six golds, and the pair led the famous club s charge to its second consecutive Australian Masters pointscore victory ahead of local WA teams Trigg Island and North Cottesloe. It was Bondi on 371 points who held on to an unassailable lead over local WA champions Trigg Island (239) and North Cottesloe (238) followed by Northcliffe (204), North Bondi (200), Sorrento (156), Kurrawa (147), Coogee (131), City of Perth (114) and Queenscliff (105). Northcliffe s Lee Vrolyks completed her carnival with another massive medal haul, pulling in eight gold medals as she added the 35 years and over double ski (with Tiarne Smith) and 130 years board relay (with Smith and Margaret Kyle) to the six golds she won on day one. Di Wallace-Ward of Brighton, South Australia, won five gold medals in the years age group, all in individual events, including the Ironwoman and surf race. Port Noarlunga s Lee Myatt finished the carnival with four gold medals, winning the years 2km beach run and the 40 years and over double ski events on day two. Elizabeth Crilly of Kurrawa, mother of multiple Australian surf ski champion Nick Crilly, capped off a successful carnival adding the 170 years surf teams title with Pauline Jeffery and Cathryn Rayward to the three gold medals she won on the first day, along with another gold in Sunday s 2km ocean swim. Meanwhile in other highlights, Australian ironwoman champion and Australian team captain Kristy Ellis combined with Tamiel Benjamin and Samantha Williams to win the 130 years Taplin and with Benjamin to win the years double ski after taking bronze in the Iron woman yesterday behind Vrolyks and Nadine Canning (Currumbin). n ssm 31

35 Interstates NSW claimed second place with 50 points with Victoria following closely behind on 46 points. The competition heated up quickly as the Interstate teams entered the icy water, but defending champions the Queensland Cyclones proved unbeatable, securing their consecutive Interstate Inflatable Rescue Boat (IRB) Championship title ahead of their rivals Victoria and New South Wales. Surf Life Saving Australia Event Manager Tony Henderson said the IRB Interstate Championships continue be a highlight on the surf sports calendar. The Interstate IRB Championships are action packed today and year in and out and today s racing has set the platform for an exciting weekend of racing, he said. ssm 33

36 Facing The Wall 23rd Aussie Gold for our amazing Kate Czerny IRB Championships Opens It was a day of thrills and spills in the open titles with the surf so challenging the open event was held over for a day which saw the racing combined into one day. In the Masters, a piece of history has been made with Williamstown Swimming and Life Saving Club from Victoria taking out the national title by one point. 39 The showdown was in fact so tight that there was only a mere six points between the first and the third-place getters. Artic conditions initially greeted the competitors in the morning with a near minus five wind chill factor with even blue skies failing to warm up the winters day. Speaking about their win, Kiama Downs Surf Club President Steven Guy said he was absolutely thrilled with the club s results. The quality of racing this years was definitely a step up and far tougher than last year, everyone was racing at their best. Surf Life Saving Club newbie Deborah Wareing (61 years) of South Australia s West Beach SLSC has managed to break not one, but two International Life Saving World Records at the 2018 National Pool Rescue Championships currently being held in Adelaide this weekend. Deborah completed her Bronze Medallion and joined West Beach Surf Life Saving Club in 2017 and is now the proud world record holder of both the 100 metre Obstacle Swim and the 100m Manikin Tow with Fins events. At the end of a great weekend s competition It was an all Queensland affair at the National Pool Championships with the Queensland Cyclones claiming back to back wins in the Interstate competition and Currumbin Vikings SLSC taking out the open point score and Tweed Heads & Coolangatta SLSC taking out the masters point score. A dominant Queensland (521) retained the Allan Whelpton Shield by 83 points over the second placing WA Suns (439) who in a surprise result overtook the NSW team (428) by 11 points to claim second. 44 Manufacturer s Cup Story by: Brett Dowker Photos: Harvie Allison Saturday the 12th of May 2018 and the usual suspects converged on the Currumbin Beach Vikings Surf Club for what was a unique 6th Annual running of the Manufacturer s Cup. This one-day event places the best team riders for each manufacturer against each other in a traditional surfing style contest moving from heats to quarters, semis and a Final. Forcefield Vs Infront Vs Crossbow Vs Sonic Vs Dolphin Vs Kracka Vs JM Paddleboards. Each Manufacturer can assemble their best four male and four female riders in an attempt to qualify through the day and earn progressive points along the way. Unfortunately, the defending champions, JM Paddleboards could not field their usually talented team of legends and so the Cup was up for grabs albeit in a slightly different but interesting format this year that would again, allow the cream to rise For the first time in six years, the waves did not turn up and rather than postpone the event, we defaulted to our small surf option of heats spinning the Double Whammy Wheel where surfers earned double points for their ride if they successfully completed the nominated manoeuvre 42 ssm

45 Do yourself a favour and visit for all of the day s action captured by the one & only Harvie Allison Again, the Lifeguard Challenge was also contested for a third time - between the GCCC (Gold Coast) Lifeguards led by Sheltox and the ever-improving SCC (Sunshine Coast) Lifeguards led by their ever consistent and genuine contender, Mr. Rhys Drury. What an interesting day! For the first time in six years, the waves did not turn up and rather than postpone the event, we defaulted to our small surf option of heats spinning the Double Whammy Wheel where surfers earned double points for their ride if they successfully completed the nominated manoeuvre (see photo) The double point manoeuvres included; 360 spin-it Re-Entry El Rollo Freestyle Coffin Ride Stand-up Floater Head-Stand The Finals format were spun early to let the competitors prepare mentally for the challenges that lay ahead. In other Awards presented at the end of the day; Best Wave went to Beau Farrell with an opening floater, vertical headstand and 360 (impressive). Biggest Wipeout went to Bay Wilden Sneddin Local Youth was won by Elliot Dowker for his El Rollo double The 2018 Rookie Award went to the young Crossbow charger Joey Mc for making the final with an Honourable mention to young gun Joey Engel who won his Semi Final with some fine displays of Stand-Up Mal surfing but had to leave early and surprise his Nanna for her 80th Birthday. Great work kid you will go a long way in life with priorities like that!! Big thanks always to Harvpix for capturing the event. Craig Dick also captured some magical moments from behind the lense. To the Currumbin Beach Vikings for the use of the club for the event, Nick Dennis for his Drone footage and Award delivery to the winners on the top floor and to Nanotune & Cannibal for their continued support of the event. 47 health&training By Nick Marshall Surf Life Physio - Stress Fractures One of the most common injuries we see at the clinic at this time of the season are stress frac-tures. It s not unusual to see many young athletes arriving at training or school in Camboots or on crutches despite never slipping, tripping or falling. But what are Stress Fractures and how did they occur? Stress Fractures are one of the most common injuries in the young sporting population. They are better thought of as small cracks that have appeared in the bone through repetitive strain or forc-es. Most commonly seen in surf athletes during the off season when they increase their general running and fitness and go away from the training they were doing leading in to aussies. What causes a stress fracture in Surf athletes? At its simplest like any overuse injury it results from an increase in activity that the body has been unable to adapt or cope with. Quite often as the surrounding muscles become increasingly fa-tigued they lose their ability to do the job of absorbing shock or load and as a result that increase in stress and load is transmitted to the bone and causes damage. All too often in surf athletes the injury occurs in the first few months back training. Reason being because they go from a month of reduced training and in particular reduced long running around their respective state titles and then in to aussies. They generally have at least another 4 week break and then start back training with some long running. Even more common in the younger athlete, especially the under 15 or 17 athlete who is incredibly motivated and excited but their growing bodies are unable to adapt to the sudden increase in running volume. Where do stress fractures normally occur in Surf athletes? There are many areas they can occur and they can relate to an athletes individual training or sport. But in the surf athlete at this time of year the most common sites are the foot, the shin, the top of the leg and the lower back. Why do we see it more commonly in our female surf athletes? Females in the sporting population are far more susceptible to stress reactions and fractures due in part to the potential decrease in bone density following the chemical and hormonal changes that can occur with increased training Above: Sometimes the excitement and eagerness to train at the start of the season can lead to over training and stress fractures, as Lani Cooper found out the hard way. and occasionally altered menstrual cycles. This condition can be described as the Female Triad Syndrome, and while many athletes believe that they have to have absent periods to be diagnosed with such a condition. The reality is that with changes to hormones in an athlete combined with the occasional calorie restricted diet and/or more than 16 hours of training a week, it can greatly increase your risk of stress fractures. What would an athlete with a stress fracture report? Generally the pain will be quite dull to start with and only present after an activity. As the condi-tion progresses or worsens it will tend to ache more and more. The athlete will find that it is sore during training but has no pain at rest but then it progresses to the point where there is pain all the ssm 45

48 time. Pain is generally described as a deep ache and can be pinpointed to touch and locate. What should i do if I suspect a stress fracture? The first thing to do is make an appointment with your sports physiotherapist. They will better as-sess your risk factors as well as training load and then determine what area is causing the pain. From there they may send you for an x-ray. However x-ray alone will be unlikely to determine the extent of the injury with many stress fractures not being visible on x-ray. Another thing to remem-ber is despite MRI being the method of choice for most imaging. It is actually not that successful at seeing and finding a stress fracture. The best form of imaging for this injury is a Bone Scan. Best treatment is prevention Like any overuse, or what could be better described as preventable injury, the best course of action is prevention. A better awareness of training loading and ways to monitor training load and overload as well as muscular fatigue are ideal ways to prevent injuries like this occurring. Unfortunately these injuries are so common in the surf athlete because there is a lack of accurate training data being collected and so with generic training programs quite often a junior athlete can be do-ing the same sessions as a 15 season veteran. The best advice to any young athlete and their parent is to respect pain and source a good local sports physio you can discuss your training and on-going pain free and injury free training with. n Like any overuse, or what could be better described as preventable injury, the best course of action is prevention. 49 nutrition By Bonnie Hancock Accredited Practising Dietitian It s time to cut the waste! Food Wastage has become somewhat of an epidemic in Western Society but there s plenty we can do to stop wasting and start saving today. Did you know that every year Aussies waste around $8 billion on food which is unused and thrown away? To break it down on a smaller scale, the average household throw out 1 of every 5 bags of groceries we buy. This results in around $1000 per household annually-money which could be well spent on other necessities such as health and education. This massive amount of waste comes not only at a cost to individuals and families, but takes a massive toll on the environment due to wasted water, fuel, fertiliser and energy resources required to produce, transport and sell the food initially. According to the Dietitian s Association of Australia, for every tonne of food waste sent into landfill, 750kg of carbon dioxide is released into the environment. So why does so much food go uneaten? The main reasons for the waste can be attributed to cooking excessive amounts of food, failure to check the fridge and pantry before going shopping and writing a list, or deviating from our list whilst we re there. But here s the good news-there is plenty we can do to make a difference in reducing Australia s food waste epidemic-and start saving both the environment and your money today! 1) Plan meals in advance so that you only buy the food you need and check the cupboard and fridge before you go to prevent you from doubling up on things you already have at home 2) Many supermarkets will hold specials on imperfect picks - fruit and veg which would have been tossed away due to some blemishes on the skin of the fruit or veg. This is a great way to score a bargain and help prevent wastage. Local farmers markets are also always an excellent option to get fresher, cheaper fruit and veg whilst supporting the farming industry 3) Store foods correctly to prevent spoilage-airtight reusable containers keep your food fresh so you can have Say NO to single use plastic drink containers. Now we are rid of the bags, time for these polluters to go! Get yourself a good quality reusable flask and look after our environment. ssm 47

50 Composting is a great option for a healthy garden and saves so much waste going to landfill. leftovers for work the following day and are much better for the environment than disposable plastic containers. We should also look to use re-usable bottles for water and other drinks, as opposed to plastic containers Get creative! If foods are soon to be going out of date, find a way to use them. 4) Get creative! If foods are soon to be going out of date, find a way to use them. This could mean baking a banana cake with soft bananas or perhaps cooking some meals using leftovers and storing individually proportioned meals for the week. You ll thank yourself later in the week when you re time poor and have a healthy meal preprepared 5) Compost fruit, vegetable and grain-food scraps or search your local council website to find local composts to contribute to instead or if your council offers green organic bins, make sure to put food scraps as they will be taken to local composters for you For extra tips on eating healthily and to appropriate portion sizes, keeping your shopping bill affordable whilst minimising food wastage, an Accredited Practising Dietitian can help! n Bonnie Hancock Accredited Practising Dietitian 48 ssm
