Message from the President of Surf Life Saving NSW Welcome to the 2006 NSW Surf Life Saving Championships. The high standard of competition will commence on Friday 3 March with the Age Championships, then on Thursday 9 March the Masters strut their stuff. From Friday 10 March the best surf sports competitors in the state will do battle for three days at the 2006 NRMA Insurance NSW Surf Life Saving Championships. we have seen. To our hosts, Sutherland Shire, thank you very much for the effort and commitment you have shown in the preparation and conduct of these Championships. The contribution of Sutherland Shire Council, the local businesses and Cronulla community have laid the foundation for what will surely be one of the best State Titles To our major sponsor, NRMA Insurance, I once again thank you for your support of the State Titles. Your continued commitment to the movement in NSW and around the country goes a long way to improving not only the standard of surf sports competition, but is also a major contributing factor in helping to save lives on our beaches. To the organising committee, I extend my thanks for the many hours of preparation you have given to make these Championships successful. Over the two weeks of the Age, Masters and Open championships, around 9000 competitors will enjoy healthy competition, but should also take the time to appreciate the efforts put in place by the event organisers in bringing together such a monumental event. To the unsung members of the work party, thank you for ensuring all competitors, officials, family, friends and members of the public have a thoroughly enjoyable event. We continue to receive financial support from government, and I extend my thanks to the NSW Minister for Sport & Recreation, the Hon. Sandra Nori MP, whose support for a number of programs in lifesaving, development and education to members and the wider public cannot be underestimated. My appreciation is extended to the growing media who cover these championships and other surf sports events in this state year after year. The increased exposure the sport is starting to receive is having a positive impact on membership and involvement in surf sports. Surf Life Saving NSW is proud to hold these championships and on behalf of all concerned I wish you every success. Peter M Pearce President Surf Life Saving New South Wales

YOUNG STARS READY TO TAKE OVER CRONULLA BEACH 2006 NSW Surf Life Saving Championships Preview, by David Moase Young surf competitors in their thousands will converge on Cronulla Beach for the 2006 NSW Age Surf Life Saving Championships on March 3-5 about 4000 nippers aged from seven to 14 years will run, dive, splash, swim and ride their way through the three days in pursuit of a NSW championship. Those who have qualified for the age championships have won their way through club competitions and Branch championships to take on the best competitors in the State. With them they bring a big band of coaches, officials, supporters, mums, dads, brothers and sisters, making the championships one of the biggest events ever be held in the Sutherland Shire. When the competition starts on Friday, March 3, the most common sight on the beach is likely to be the sky blue, white and black cap of the host club, Cronulla. The powerhouse junior club will be shooting for its ninth consecutive Pointscore. Club title number eight was won clearly at Umina last year where Cronulla finished with points, ahead of Terrigal on 218, Freshwater (154), Manly (125) and Wanda (123). The home clubs are expected to be very tough to beat once again thanks to the rich seam of junior surf life saving talent they seem to mine every year. Located just to the north, Wanda will be hoping to use local knowledge to improve its overall placing, as will the other Sutherland Shire clubs North Cronulla and Elouera. Their rivals from the Sydney Northern Beaches Branch, led by Manly and Freshwater, will provide strong opposition, while Central Coast clubs Terrigal, Copacabana and Avoca Beach will bring some outstanding competitors. The Hunter Branch will provide strong teams such as Swansea Belmont and Cooks Hill, while North Wollongong and Wollongong City lead the Illawarra challenge. From country areas will come strong teams representing Sawtell (North Coast), Warilla-Barrack Point and Shellharbour (South Coast). Manly s Tom Fraser-Holmes is likely to be one of the stars of the weekend when he contests events in the Under-14 age group. He dominated the Ironman and swim competitions at the Northern Beaches Branch championships. Another likely star is Freshwater s Georgia Miller in the Under-10 division. Georgia was a star at Under-9 level last year, winning the surf and Boards and looks set to continue her domination, while her sister Brooke will be hunting for gold in the Under-14s. Copacabana s Jade Condon won two golds in the Under-11s at Umina last year and has carried that form into this season s competitions, as has Matthew Hurst of Ocean Beach, who grabbed a swag of medals last year competing for Terrigal. Whether they win medals or just enjoy three days of great competition, every one of the 4000 competitors will head into the weekend with high hopes and dreams of one day matching the deeds of the King of Cronulla, NSW and Australian Ironman champion Nathan Smith. Did you know? Surf Life Saving NSW has 22,819 junior lifesavers from 129 surf clubs across 11 Branches

SCHOFIELD STARS BUT CRONULLA WINS EIGHTH NIPPER CROWN David Lyall looks back at the action from the 2005 Age Championships Terrigal teenager Tim Schofield was the toast of the Central Coast after a sensational three days at the Telstra 2005 NSW Junior Surf Life Saving Championships at Ocean Beach at Umina. Schofield won the coveted Under-14 Ironman crown, his last in the junior ranks, in an exciting sprint finish to top off a massive six medal haul that made him the undoubted star of the 4251 kids competing in the junior surf showcase. Despite Schofield s success Terrigal were unable to steal the all important club pointscore trophy from Cronulla who took the title for an unprecedented eighth straight season. The Sydney club finished on a massive points, well ahead of the spirited Terrigal outfit on 218. Northern beaches club Freshwater were third (154), Manly fourth (125) and Wanda (123) fifth. Terrigal s efforts helped them win the regional pointscore while Warilla-Barrack Point won back-to-back Country titles. In the end Cronulla, who brought a whopping 193 youngsters north up the Pacific Highway, were just too strong across the board and had too much depth for the rest of the competition. They were led by an inspired performance from 13-year-old Lauren Davenport who like Schofield signed off on a stellar junior career with her first ever NSW Ironwoman title to match the feat achieved by her sister Cassie in In the Under-14 Ironman Schofield was always in or near the lead in a race where the field went at a crackerjack pace from the starter s gun. Schofield was ecstatic after the win, his first in the Ironman at state level, and said humbly he got home because he had luck on his side. Normally I get caught by people on waves but today they (the waves) did me a favour which I am really happy about, Schofield said describing the latter stages of the final board leg where, truth be told, he displayed a tremendous amount of guile and Skill to use the choppy half metre swell to his advantage. In the end Schofield, Wanda s Nicholas Fox and MacMasters Beach dynamo Dean Mackay all ended up on the same wave but there was no way anyone was going to take victory from the Terrigal charge in the dash to the line. I am so stoked to win because there were a lot of good racers here from all around the state and this is my last junior Ironman race. I just wanted to come here this weekend and have fun, to do as well as I could. And the Ironman victory was the cream on the cake for the St Edwards High student who also won the Under-14 Surf Race, Surf Teams and Senior Cameron Relay as well as picking up silver in the Board Rescue with his cousin Guy and a bronze in the Board Relay. Incredibly Schofield s six medals doubled the total number of medals he had won throughout his entire junior career. Davenport s display in the Under-14 Ironwoman was equally as impressive with her lead from the front tactics proving a winner and her margin of victory as great as any on the day.

The bubbly NSW representative was visibly emotional after the race as she was hugged and congratulated by her fellow competitors. This is just such a great feeling, Davenport said. I have been waiting such a long time for this moment and because this is my last junior race ever, no one can take the title away from me. The likeable youngster also won the Under-14 Female Board Rescue, picked up silver in the Board and bronze in the Surf Race. It was a family affair for the Davenports too, with younger sister Brittany teaming with Bridget Little to win the Under-11 Female Board Rescue to go with her own silver in the Board. Davenport, like Schofield, will contest next week s NRMA Insurance NSW Senior Surf Life Saving Championships before focusing her attention on one day joining the professional Ironwoman series. If Schofield is the star of today, then a pair of Manly swimmers are the stars of tomorrow. Trent Klouzal, who joined the club this year after his family moved from Cudgen Headland, was magnificent in the Under-12s winning the Ironman, Surf Race and Board Relay as well as picking up more hardware with silver in the Board Rescue. In the age above Klouzal, clubmate Tom Fraser-Holmes (Under-13) climbed out of his sick bed to win his fifth straight NSW Surf Race championship, a feat that is believed to be a first. Fraser-Holmes has been the dominant force in his age group for many years but was struck down by illness last Wednesday and had been unable to hold down food or fluid all week. The night before the final he was so ill his father was contemplating taking his son home but in a true sign of courage the plucky youngster insisted on defending his mantle. There were many more notable achievements over the weekend too. Freshwater flyer Karlie Morton won the Beach Flags for the fifth straight year when she won the Under-12s and made it a classic double by winning the Beach Sprint too. Morton has won the beach double an incredible four of the last five years. Coalcliff s Samantha Hammond mirrored Morton s feats by taking out the beach double in the Under-13s. The Illawarra sprinter had won both events in the past, but never both in the same year. MacMasters Beach trio Tami Hunt, Lauren Hall and Annaliese Roden won the Under-14 Female Board Relay to give them an extraordinary unbeaten clean sweep of the Board Relay since their first race in the event as Under-11 competitors. Cronulla s Elly Graf caused the upset of the weekend when she ended the four year unbeaten run of Terrigal s Australian champion Donnica Clarke in the Beach Sprint. Graf also helped her team to Beach Relay gold. North Steyne s Mitch Garth and Marikki Watego of Cudgen Headland won the Junior Lifesaver of the Year awards just ahead of highly commended runners-up Ben Styan of Windang and Charlie Marques from Broulee Surfers.

NSW S BEST SURF LIFESAVERS SET TO LIGHT UP THE SHIRE 2006 NRMA Insurance NSW Surf Life Saving Championships preview by David Moase and David Lyall The focus will be on Cronulla and the Sutherland Shire Beaches for all the right reasons this year when the State s best Surf Life Savers arrive in Sydney s south for seven days of intense competition over two weekends in March. After the NSW AGE SURF LIFE SAVING CHAMPIONSHIPS kick off the action from March 3-5 the NRMA INSURANCE NSW SURF LIFE SAVING CHAMPIONSHIPS, incorporating the Masters Championships, will be contested over four days from March Almost 9000 competitors representing close to 90 clubs, bordered by Pambula in the south to Cudgen Headland in the north, will come together for what is shaping up to be a wonderful week in one of the heartlands of surf lifesaving in Australia. They will contest events ranging from the traditional March Past, Beach Sprint and Flags on the sand, to the Surf, Board, Ski, Ironwoman and Ironman races in the water plus the fearless gladiators of the sea in the Surf Boat area. This summer, like each and every year along the NSW coastline, volunteer surf lifesavers have patrolled our beaches and now it is time for them to showcase their Skills in competition. For the Masters and Senior competitors the NSW Championships is the last chance for everyone to fine tune their performances before the NRMA INSURANCE AUSTRALIAN SURF LIFE SAVING CHAMPIONSHIPS to be held at Kurrawa Beach on Queensland s Gold Coast from March 28-April 2. Last year the Cronulla club swept all before them at the NSW Championships winning the Pointscore at the Juniors for an unprecedented eighth straight year, then dominating the Senior titles by amassing 370 points - exactly double the score of runners up Swansea Belmont. Terrigal followed up their impressive second place at the Junior titles by finishing third on 163 with Manly fourth on 157 and Wanda fifth with 153. Pivotal to Cronulla s chances in the Senior competition will be Ironman superstar Nathan Smith. At last year s Championships at Umina, Smith won a record fourth successive NSW Ironman title before claiming his maiden Australian Ironman crown on the Gold Coast. He will be back to face the challenges from his ever improving clubmate Chris Allum, Swansea Belmont veteran Josh Blair, Avoca s Daniel Shade and countless others out to spoil Smith s homecoming. Allum, third in the Surf Race and Shade, second in the Board at the World Championships at Lorne, will be among the leading competitors not only in their respective individual events, but also in the Cronulla and Avoca Beach teams. There will be several world champions lining up at the NSW Championships including Bulli girls Skye Heness and Brittany Sharkey who defeated hot favourites Kristyl Smith and Kristy Cameron in the Female Open Board Rescue and the Bilgola Female Surf Boat crew, swept by the perennial Don McManus. The female competition will feature a very much in-form Naomi Flood (Manly), the female competitor of the carnival in 2004 and 2005, who will again set the standard but she too will face solid challenges from all over the coast.

Flood finished second in the Open Ironwoman and Ski at the recent World Championships, at Lorne behind Alexandra Headland s lifesaver extraordinaire, Kristy Munroe. Terrigal s Amanda White showed she will be tough to beat in the Surf Races with her silver medal winning performance behind Kristyl Smith in the World Championship Surf Race. More than one-third of the competitors at the senior carnival will be in the boat section and all in only five events Open, Female, Reserve Grade, Under-21 and Under-19. Clubs like North Cronulla, Queenscliff, Bronte, Freshwater, Bilgola, South Curl Curl, Austinmer, Avoca and Wanda are expected to shine. Meanwhile if the World Championships are any guide then the strength of the NSW clubs on a world stage is very encouraging with four clubs finishing in the top ten in surf and beach events - Manly (third), Bulli (sixth), Cronulla (seventh) and Terrigal (ninth) in the World Championship pointscore a good indication of things to come at the NSW Championships. Did you know? Surf Life Saving NSW has 56,902 members, including 11,712 active members who patrol our beaches at 129 clubs in 11 Branches.

ALLUM S EIGHT GOLD AS CRONULLA TAKES TOP HONOURS A look back at all the action from last year s State Champs at Ocean Beach Cronulla s Chris Allum was named the Most Outstanding Male Athlete of the Carnival taking home an extraordinary eight gold, three silver and one bronze medal that included winning his second successive Open Surf Race title and a maiden Under-19 Ironman crown. The Allum name is an institution at the Wanda club with Chris father Greg winning four NSW Open Ironman titles in the 1970s and 1980s. Wanda had also been Chris club until this season when he made the heart-wrenching decision to switch allegiances to neighbours Cronulla because they had far more competitive teams than at his original club. The move proved a masterstroke with the powerful all rounder taking gold in the Under-19 Belt Race, Surf Teams, Taplin Relay, Board Relay as well as the Open Taplin Relay and the Lifesaver Relay to go with his individual wins. He was also part of three silver medal winning teams and one bronze medal winning squad. The final victory in the Open Taplin Relay was a fitting result for Allum, Open Ironman champion Nathan Smith and the entire Cronulla club who took out the overall pointscore for the second successive season. The Sutherland Shire club were outstanding in all facets of the competition throughout the entire weekend and together with the pointscore crown they won at last week s Telstra NSW Junior Surf Life Saving Championships they are now the undisputed premiere club in NSW. They finished with a massive 370 points exactly double the score of runners up Swansea Belmont on 185. Terrigal followed up their impressive second place at the Junior titles by finishing third on 163 with Manly fourth on 157 and Wanda fifth with 153. Bronte s first Open Surf Boat title in half a century In other events Bronte took out their first State Open Surf Boat title in 50 years their last one coming back in Queenscliff destroyed their opposition to easily win the Female Surf Boat and North Cronulla Red Barons won the Reserve Grade Surf Boat race. Luke and Kim take Single Ski titles North Bondi s Luke Michael was outstanding in the Open Ski winning back-to-back titles against a world class field while North Curl Curl s Kim Low won her first NSW title in the corresponding Female event. In the board events Avoca s Daniel Shade edged out Cronulla s Nathan Smith, while The Lakes Emma Schneider crushed the field in the Female event. Flags just Wright for Lisa On the beach Swansea Belmont s Lisa Wright collected her fourth straight Open Beach Flags title, Greg Hitchenson his first since he won in 1996, while Zane Campbell (Wanda) and Ashlee Cheney (Mollymook) won their first ever NSW Open Beach Sprint titles. Warilla teenager snares two gold In the Male Under-19 competition Warilla- Barrack Point s David Smith, who won the Surf Race and Board, was runner up to Allum in the Ironman and third in the Ski. Lauren stamps her future for Cronulla Just a week after starring at the Telstra NSW Junior Surf Life Saving Championships in the Under-14 events, Cronulla s Lauren Davenport stepped up into the Under-15 events and outclassed girls more than a year her senior.

The youngster stamped herself as a champion of the future when she took out the Surf Race, Ironwoman, Surf Teams and Board Relay as well as picking up a silver in the Rescue Tube and a pair of bronze in the Board Rescue and Board. Cronulla wins Lifesaver and Taplin Relay Double Cronulla has thrown down the gauntlet to the big Queensland clubs for this month s NRMA Insurance Australian Surf Life Saving Championships with outstanding victories in the Lifesaver Relay and the prestigious Taplin Relay at the NSW titles. The Lifesaver Relay requires clubs to have a boat crew, a swimmer; board paddler and ski paddler and a beach sprinter. Each team must include a female competitor, an Under-17 and an Under-19 competitor. The Lifesaver Relay team was, Chris Allum (swim), Nicole Jones (sprint), Nathan Smith (board), Nathan Steiner (ski) and Garry Allman, Simon Levings, Matthew Bruce Ivan Skerratt, and Jeremy Neilsen (boat crew). The final results of the Lifesaver Relay: Cronulla A, Queenscliff, Redhead, Manly Gold, Swansea Belmont, Wanda Blue. The Taplin Relay saw the Cronulla combination stage a thrilling finish with Bulli and Swansea Belmont to issue a warning to Queensland clubs Tugun, Northcliffe and North Burleigh.

NSW Surf Life Saving Championships - Fast Facts 2006 NSW SURF LIFE SAVING CHAMPIONSHIPS MEDIA GUIDE * In 2005 at Umina, Cronulla s Nathan Smith became the first person to win four consecutive NSW Open Ironman championships. Not since Robert Chapman of Elouera in 1983 and 1984 had anyone else ever won two straight. That record is not the only piece of history made by the Smith family after Nathan s sister Kristyl won the Ironwoman in 2003, making them the first ever brother-sister combination to win the coveted titles. (They went on to claim their first Australian titles in 2005). * The brother combination of Dean and Darren Mercer won the NSW Open Board Rescue title five times and the dynamic duo have seven NSW Open Ironman crowns between them. * Steve Warren of North Cronulla won the Open NSW Board championship event five years in a row between 1974 and * Cronulla's, Daniel McLellan has the most consecutive Open Belt Race victories at a NSW Championship with six between 1993 and * Olympians that have won a NSW Open Surf Race title include, Gary Winram (North Bondi), Jon Donohoe (Clovelly), Terry Buck (Clovelly), Greg Rogers (Clovelly), Graham Windeatt (Collaroy), Robert Nay (Wollongong), Ron McKeon (South Maroubra), Brad Cooper (Wollongong), Max Metzker (Maroubra), Scott Miller (Manly) and Malcolm Allen (Maroubra). * Female Olympians who have won a NSW Surf Race title include, Stacey Gartrell (Wanda), Leigh Habler (Coogee) and Elka Graham (Manly). * No Open Ironwoman has ever won three NSW Championships. Samantha O'Brien (South Maroubra), Courtney Ellis (Manly), Lilli Miller (Bulli) and Kristy Cameron (The Lakes/Wamberal) all have two victories to their names. * 2004 Australian Ironwoman champion Kristy Cameron, competing for The Lakes/Wamberal, is the only competitor to win both the NSW Open Ironwoman and NSW Under-19 (or Under-18) Ironwoman titles in the same year. * In 2004 Kristy Smith (North Cronulla) won her fifth consecutive NSW Open Female Beach Sprint title. * Swansea Belmont has won five NSW Open Taplin Relay titles in the last 12 years. * Lisa Wright (Swansea Belmont) won her third consecutive Open and Under-19 Female Beach Flags double in She also won the (now discontinued) Under-16 Female Beach Flags twice giving her eight NSW Beach Flags titles at the age of 19. Including 2005, Wright has won four Open Beach Flags championships. * In 2004 Stephen Munnery (Kilcare) joined rugby league international Nick Yakich (North Narrabeen ), Darren Peters (Wollongong ) and Kip McFarland (Mollymook ) as the only runners to win three consecutive NSW Open Beach Sprint titles. No one has won four straight in the event.

TOP OF THE STATE NSW SURF LIFE SAVING CHAMPIONSHIPS ANALYSIS David Lyall and David Moase look at the major contenders for IRONMAN & IRONWOMAN Open Male Cronulla s Nathan Smith created history last year by becoming the first person to win four consecutive NSW Ironman crowns. On his home beach, and also carrying the title of Australian champion, he is very much the man to beat. Smith, who was fourth in the World Interclub Titles after winning the National Teams Ironman title at Lorne a fortnight ago, is not over the line in his pursuit of a fifth title, however, and will be challenged by the likes of clubmate Chris Allum, Daniel Shade from Avoca, Swansea Belmont s Josh Blair, Maroubra s Ben Squires, Reid Schofield of Terrigal and Bulli s Drew Cairncross, Ben Allen and Gregg Miller. Queenscliff teenager Matt Poole was a sensation at the Northern Beaches championships, winning both the Open and Under-19 events and could challenge the older competitors. Open Female Naomi Flood is the defending champion and her move down the sand from Queenscliff to Manly has done nothing to affect her form, with a stirring second to an unstoppable Kristy Munroe at the World Championships in Lorne a fortnight ago. Flood, the Australian Under-19 champion, will be tough to beat, but it is anything but a foregone conclusion. Amanda Hey (Terrigal) won two years ago and was second to Flood last year so she will be determined to win back the crown. In an event where the standard of competition seems to improve every year, there will be plenty of other contenders including Bulli s Brittany Sharkey and Nicole Sheedy, Candice Falzon of North Bondi, Flood s Manly teammate Emma Schneider, Hayley Condran of North Wollongong and Sawtell s Courtney Hancock. Under-19 Male A great showdown looms in this event, with an array of super young talents set to fight for the crown. Leading contenders include outstanding all-rounder David Smith of Warilla-Barrack Point, Queenscliff s Matt Poole, Josh Minogue of Thirroul and Brendan Schofield of Terrigal. Others who can t be discounted are Shane Barrie (North Wollongong) and Hayden Allum (Wanda). Under-19 Female With some of the big name competitors moving out of this division this year, it gives up and comers the chance to prove themselves. Courtney Hancock of Sawtell, who won the Under-17 title last year, has had a great season and looks set to play a big role in this event, along with the likes of Elyse Yardley (North Wollongong), Meggie Helson (Shellharbour) and Cronulla s Kristy May Morris, Peta Scanlon and Karla Attwells. Arielle Bird of Queenscliff has been a consistent performer although is battling a knee injury, and her clubmate Emma Parsons can test anyone on her day. Under-17 Male Collaroy s Kendrick Louis led the charge for NSW at the Interstate titles and took the top prize at the Interbranch championships. Wade Love-Attard (Manly) and Ben Miller (Terrigal) filled the places at the Interbranch and will challenge again, while Jacob Lollback of Yamba will be back to defend the title he won last year. Mitch Crow of Redhead, Kirk Gosper of Manly and Avoca Beach s Liam Jackson could also find themselves in the mix. Under-17 Female There isn t much either Freshwater s Alisha Miller or Swansea Belmont s Kimberley Tapley haven t won this year and it would surprise no-one to see one of the outstanding pair on top of the dais this week. If they are to be upset, perhaps Sawtell s Bonnie Hancock is the most likely as she attempts to grab the

crown won by her older sister Courtney in Others to look out for are Kate Ebrill (Swansea Belmont), Hannah Walker (Wollongong City) and Rachel Crerar (Freshwater). Under-15 Male Michael Booth of Redhead was a star at the Interstate carnival, winning the Ironman and looks a strong chance to do the same here. The Premiership winner will face tough competition from Queenscliff s Saxon Bird and Freshwater s Luke Stirton, Terrigal s Tim Schofield, Dean Mackay of Avoca Beach and Justin King (North Wollongong). Under-15 Female Lauren Davenport of Cronulla will have the luxury of defending her title on her home beach but faces some stiff competition. Kayla Russell (Sawtell) and Brooke Miller (Freshwater) are having strong seasons and will challenge closely, as will another Cronulla competitor, Jane Ware, and Laura Higgins (Redhead). Lauren Hall (MacMasters Beach) will lead the Central Coast challenge, while young Emily Chaffey won the Hunter Branch championship and could worry her older rivals. SURF RACE Open Male Home beach knowledge will be a big plus for Cronulla s Nathan Smith, Chris Allum and Mark Simpson and the rest of the field will keep a close eye on them from the first round. Allum won this crown last year as an Under-19 competitor and probably starts as favourite after comfortably winning the NSW Surf Premiership and taking bronze behind Zane Holmes and Shannon Eckstein in the World Championship Surf Race final, which saw clubmate Smith in fourth place. If the Surf Race crown is to leave the Shire, Ethan Whiteman (Manly) could be the man to take it after a series of consistent performances. Always one of the most open carnival events, this title will also be a high priority for the likes of North Wollongong s Shane Barrie, Bronte veteran Mal Allen, Bulli s Drew Cairncross and Matt Freeman, national Under-19 champion Josh Minogue and Swansea Belmont s Josh Blair. Open Female World Championship silver medallist from Lorne two weeks ago, Amanda White (Terrigal) and Brittany Sharkey (Bulli) finished first and second in last year s final and they are leading contenders yet again. Manly s Naomi Flood will challenge strongly after splitting Sharkey and White at the Interbranch titles. Kristie Lee Ogilvie (North Bondi) showed last year she is still a force in these events. Others in this race right up to their goggles are Terrigal s Amanda Hey and Jessica Parr, Hayley Condran (North Wollongong) and Emma Schneider (Manly), while Kimberley Tapley (Swansea Belmont) will lead the charge of the younger competitors. BOARD Open Male Daniel Shade (Avoca Beach) got the better of Nathan Smith (Cronulla) last year and they probably are the standouts in what should be hotly contested event, but if either slip up or get a bad break there are plenty of strong paddlers waiting to take advantage. Shade and Smith are among the form paddlers of the season with the pair finishing second and third respectively to Shannon Eckstein at the World Championship final in Lorne. Josh Blair (Swansea Belmont) has been a super consistent performer over many years and will give himself every chance. Wollongong City youngster Dean Buttel broke the Bulli stranglehold at the Illawarra Branch championships, edging out Drew Cairncross and Ben Allen. Tim Foran (Redhead) and Mark Bint (Swansea Belmont) will join Blair in a strong contingent from the Hunter Branch, while Terrigal s Schofield brothers, Brendan and Reid, have been strong all season. Cam

Coghlan (Manly) won the Surf Premiership but was beaten out by Tom and Ben Atkinson (Queenscliff) for the Northern Beaches Branch title. Open Female Emma Schneider took home the prize last year and, now at Manly, will be a strong contender yet again. She is not the only Emma from the Northern Beaches with hopes this week, as Emma Parsons (Queenscliff) took out the NSW Premiership. Behind her in that competition were Brittany Sharkey (Bulli), Amanda Hey (Terrigal) and Cronulla s Peta Scanlon and Karla Atwells, who also have strong chances. Nicole Sheedy (Bulli), Kate MacNamara (Avoca Beach), Lauren McKie (Collaroy), and Naomi Flood (Manly) are all good paddlers, while Katie Graham of Avoca Beach took the prize at the Interbranch and will be looking to do so again. SINGLE SKI Open Male Heaps of entries and plenty of quality competitors make this an exciting and unpredictable event. Cronulla s Nathan Steiner and Tony Schumacher will know the conditions better than anyone, while North Bondi s Luke Michael will be out to repeat last year s triumph. Bulli s Downie Langthorne (fourth in the World Championship at Lorne) took the Interbranch title and won at Freshwater ahead of two other strong contenders, Manly s Blake Ballard and Paul Tatham of North Bondi. The list of contenders seems endless and any one of Byron Bay s Kurt Tutt (third in the World Championships), Queenscliff s Nick Holt, Redhead s Peter Scott, Maroubra s Glen Cowdrey, North Bondi s Jake Michael and Freshwater s Jono Chalmers (fifth at Lorne) and Collaroy s Scott Austin (sixth at Lorne) could come the out on top. Among all that quality, watch out for young David Smith of Warilla-Barrack Point, who won the NSW Premiership and could upstage them all. Open Female This one could well be fought out by some of the leading Ironwoman contenders, such as Interstate champion and 2006 World Championship runner-up Naomi Flood (Manly), Amanda Hey (Terrigal), Kate McNamara (Avoca Beach), Nicole Sheedy (Bulli) and Lauren McKie (Collaroy). North Curl Curl s Kim Low was last year s winner and has a strong chance of making it a double after winning at the North Cronulla carnival. North Wollongong s Elyse Yardley was the NSW Premiership surprise packet, winning ahead of Queenscliff s Sonja Schleimer, while Terrigal s Sally Turner also performed well in the Premiership. BEACH SPRINT Open Male With NSW gold and Australian silver in his bag from 2005, Wanda s Zane Campbell shapes as a strong contender for a repeat triumph. The man he nudged out last year, Mollymook s Glen Beveridge, has been in hot form this season and took the Interbranch crown. The NSW Premiership was closely fought, with Wamberal s Drew Howell taking top prize narrowly from Gareth Nichols (Caves Beach) and Sean Riley (Wanda). Steve Hatch of Newport has had a very consistent season, as has Killcare s Marcus Kain. Open Female Defending champion Ashley Cheney of Mollymook looks to have the strongest claims on this event after her World Championship victory at Lorne. Add two consecutive Australian championships to her CV and an Interbranch win this season, Cheney will start a hot favourite. Five-time NSW champ and runner-up to Cheney at Lorne, Kristy Smith (North Cronulla) will appreciate competing at home, as will Cronulla s Nicki Jones. Look out for Anna Heasman (Caves Beach) who showed her quality by winning the NSW

Premiership. Flags champion Lisa Wright (Swansea Belmont) represented NSW in both beach events this year. BEACH FLAGS Open Male Swansea Belmont s Jay Coburn deserves favouritism for this event after winning the Interbranch, Hunter Branch, Manly and Freshwater carnivals. The Caves Beach contenders including NSW Premiership winner Michael Waghorn, Daniel McGowan and Gareth Nichols have competed well, as has Andrew Fortis of Wamberal and the consistent Matt Palamara of Manly. Open Female Swansea Belmont s Lisa Wright lines up for her fourth straight NSW Open title and her ninth State crown in all. Wright has been at her brilliant best again this season, winning the Interbranch and Interstate titles but suffered a rare defeat at the hands of Mollymook s Melissa Howard at the World Championships in Lorne. Those with the Herculean task of trying to beat the two best in the world are Premiership winner Suzi Hibbins of Elouera, Manly s Nicole Fullbrook and Cronulla s Nicki Jones, Melissa Miles and Laura Hammond and Queenscliff s Laura Shorter. SURF BOAT Open Male Freshwater, swept by Julian Delaney, is the State s most consistent crew and have had a brilliant 2006 so far, winning the Manly Carnival, the final round of the Red Rooster Premiership, the ASRL Open and the Sydney Northern Beaches Branch Championships. Bulli Gold (Paul Jones) however went one better than Freshwater to take out the NSW Premiership. World championship silver medallists Avoca Beach (Richard Brierty), Queenscliff (Matt Hamilton), Bungan Beach (Matt Collins), Wanda Blue (Trevor Robson) and Coogee A (Rodney Colman) have all shown good form throughout the season. Austinmer, swept by Jack Patison, are always competitive. Open Female Typically, clubs from the Sydney Northern Beaches Branch dominate this event and again this year they will be favourites. Like in the Open Male event Queenscliff Blue (Matt Hamilton) is expected to feature, as will World Champions Bilgola (Don McManus) and perennial placegetters South Curl Curl Gold, swept by Chris Flemming. South Curl Curl Gold won the ASRL Open and finished second to Bilgola at the World Championships at Lorne with a crew that includes kayaking dual-olympian Yanda Nossiter. Avoca Beach Zenith (Richard Brierty) and Austinmer Blue (Jack Patison) have also been in good form and come from solid boat rowing clubs. Redhead A (Ben Neppl) was third in the NSW Premiership behind Queenscliff and Austinmer. Reserve Grade This event is the biggest of the entire championships with more than 15 per cent of the total entrants in the carnival. It is also one of the most open events and anything can, and usually does, happen. Austinmer Blue (Jack Patison), Bulli Gold (Nigel Taylor) and Bilgola Gold took the top three spots in the NSW Premiership while Collaroy Spiders (Paul Booth), South Narrabeen Boozers and Queenscliff Blue (Matt Hamilton) finished top three in the ASRL Open. The Wamberal Hollywoods and any team from host clubs North Cronulla, Wanda and Elouera will be competitive. Under-21

Bilgola Dilligaf is the form crew in this division having won the NSW Premiership. They will face strong opposition from fellow Sydney Northern Beaches clubs South Narrabeen Snappers, Manly (Darren Burke) and Palm Beach (Peter Spence), who were second in the ASRL Open. Once again Jack Patison s Austinmer crew has had a solid season, winning three of the four NSW Premiership rounds, while Wanda Blue (Trevor Robson) could do well. Under-19 MacMasters Beach Gold (Michael Norman) has been one of the most consistent crews in any division in NSW this year. The Central Coast crew finished with two wins and two seconds in the NSW Premiership. Also in the running will be Bronte, Bilgola, Pacific Palms, Wanda, Austinmer, Gerringong and NSW Premiership runners-up Helensburgh-Stanwell Park Red.

SURF SPORTS DISCIPLINE EXPLANATIONS 2006 NSW SURF LIFE SAVING CHAMPIONSHIPS MEDIA GUIDE A surf lifesaving carnival as big as the State Titles is a busy spectacle that could be somewhat overwhelming to the uneducated. But to the contrary, despite over 100 events taking place on each weekend the championships are very spectator friendly and, with a quick explanation, quite easy to follow. The NSW Age Surf Life Saving Championships cater for boys and girls in age groups from Under-8 to Under-14. Competitors in the NRMA Insurance NSW Surf Life Saving Championships are grouped into ages for Male and Female in Under-15s, Under-17s, Under-19s, Under 21s (Surf Boats only), Restricted Over-24s (Surf Race only), Open and Masters (Over-30s to Over-65s). They all compete in a range of Beach and Water events BEACH EVENTS March Past Judged on timing and correctness is the most traditional of all surf lifesaving events, the March Past.Often the domain of the more senior members of a surf club, the March Past is synonymous with bag pipes and colourful flags and costumes. It is made up of 12-member teams with standard bearers and includes Open, Under-21 and Age divisions. It has always been the traditional surf carnival showcase and the carnival stops for the March Past. Beach Sprint/Beach Sprint Relay Beach Sprint is perhaps the most simple of all events for it is a matter of getting to the end of an eight lane sand track faster than the next competitor. The Beach Relay is for teams of four runners who transfer a baton after each completing one leg of the Beach Sprint course. Beach Flags The last of the beach events is the Beach Flags, which is run over a shorter distance and is similar in concept to Musical Chairs and was originally known as Musical Flags. Competitors lie face down on the sand with their feet closest to the pieces of rubber hose, or flags, positioned in the sand a short sprint away. Once the starting whistle is blown competitors must rise to their feet, turn to face the flags and then ensure they are able to capture a flag. As in the Musical Chairs, there will be one flag less than there is competitors, thus ensuring one competitor is eliminated each round until a winner is decided. WATER EVENTS Surf Race/Teams The Surf Race is a swimming event that starts on the beach and sees competitors round a string of marker buoys or cans before returning to the beach and finishing with a sprint to the line. The Surf Teams event is made up of four members who all swim at the same time with their finishing place used to accumulate a team score. Rescue and Resuscitation (R&R) The R&R competition is one of the more traditional events at a surf carnival. It involves two, five or six person teams performing a simulated rescue drill that is judged on the precision of each team s actions.

Surf Belt In the same area are belt races for Under-19 and Open competitors which, like R&R, is performed using the reel, line and belt. They are made up of five man teams a belt swimmer, three linesmen and a reelman. The gun start signals the teams to run from the shore line to pick up their reel with the swimmer, or beltman, jumping into the belt and the reel party carries the reel down the beach. The beltmen are assigned individual buoys and signal their arrival raising one arm above their head after touching their buoy. Rescue Tube/Rescue Tube Rescue There are rescue tube events for senior competitors, where a swimmer will, similar to a belt race, place his or her arm through the shoulder strap of the tube and swim to their designated buoys and raise his or her hand. The Under-19 and Opens are two person events whereby a patient is dropped behind the designated buoy and the rescuer swims out and places the tube around the patient. The rescuer then tows the patient back to shore and the event is complete when the pair crosses the start/finish line. Ironman/Ironwoman The ultimate challenge for an individual are the Ironman and Ironwoman. In Open and Under-19 events for males and Open events for females, competitors complete three randomly drawn water legs - surf, board and ski with a torturous run leg at the end of each. The event usually takes around twelve minutes but can often take over twenty if the surf is at its toughest. For the younger ages and for juniors there is some respite, with the ski leg not part of the event but that sometimes just means the pace is hotter. Surf Craft/Relays Board and ski races are similar although each has a separate set of different coloured cans for athletes to round with the board longer than the surf race, and the ski longer still. There are also board the board relay and ski relay, three-member team events that are conducted as a relay. Another popular water event for all ages is the board rescue which is a two-person team which requires a swimmer and a board paddler. Each team is assigned a beach and buoy position. The swimmers race to their assigned buoy and they signal for their board paddler to leave the beach. Once the board paddler rounds the buoy, the pair paddle to the beach together. It simulates a board rescue. Probably the most prestigious team event to win is the Taplin Relay. It is often used to gauge the depth of the strongest clubs and is super competitive, not only within the heat of battle but sometimes before the race even starts with competitors striving for the honour of being selected in their club s team. The race involves two swimmers, two board paddlers and two ski paddlers who all complete a similar course to the one they raced over in the surf, board and ski events. While the disciplines are coupled together the order of the event is randomly drawn before the carnival making for a six-leg relay lottery. The juniors, as well as the Under-15 and Under-17s, have a modified event known as the Cameron Relay, which is made up of a swimmer, a board paddler and a beach sprinter). An extension of the Taplin Relay is the Lifesaver Relay which is made up of one swimmer, one ski paddler, one board paddler, one boat crew and one beach sprinter and in case of the NSW Championship clubs must provide at least one female competitor and one Under-19. These are among the most exciting events of the Championships.

Board Riding Board riding display events are also very popular, and in recent years a malibu (longboard) event has been added, with winners judged similar to major surf board riding events. Surf Boats The surf boat races are all about power, strength and fitness. There are five divisions for the boaties Open, Female, Reserve Grade, Under-21s and Under-19s. A surf boat crew consists of four rowers and a sweep. The rowers sit on alternate sides of the boat and each pull one oar with two arms while the sweep stands at the back of the boat and steers. On the row out the sweep is also the only member who can see the waves approaching as his or her crew heads out to sea a perilous and thankless job but on the return the crew has a bird s eye view of what is looming out the back! Each crew starts on the waters edge and rows out around their designated turning can before proceeding back to the beach through a set of gate cans. Not only is each crew trying to win the race but they must ensure they stay upright. Capsizing means immediate disqualification and often a heartbreaking end to months and months of hard work. Lifesaving Events There are events to determine the Champion Lifesaver and Champion Patrol Team. Champion Lifesaver competitors must complete a surf race, tube race, beach sprint, board as well as resuscitation and patient assessment and a theory paper. In the Champion Patrol Team competition, teams are made up of up to six competitors who must complete similar physical tasks as a team, similar in format to the Champion Lifesaver but teams also have to complete an assimilated rescue scenario. There are also First Aid competitions for all age groups where two-man teams have to perform simulated first aid on patients who have had anything from cramps, bluebottle stings to shark attacks.
