1 SNAPPETS Stadium Masters Swimming Club Inc December 2017 PRESIDENT What a lot has been happening in the last few weeks! On Wednesday 1 st November during the morning session a club member experienced a serious medical emergency. Fortunately correct procedure was followed and the patient is now recovering. This incident showed the importance of keeping details of members emergency contacts up to date. We now ensure non-club members also provide their emergency contact details before allowing them to swim in a club session. On 19 th November Stuart Gray kindly ran a CPR information afternoon attended by twelve members and friends. Stuart had all the necessary equipment on hand and took the group carefully through the DRSABCD (Danger, Response, Send, Airway, Breathing, Compressions and Defibrillator) sequence. He gave us many useful tips from his experience. The participants were very happy to sharpen their skills, hoping fervently that they would not be called upon to use them! Club members are now encouraged to take a course for certification in CPR. Recent activities have included a successful fundraising sausage sizzle at Bunnings, an open house at Pamela s new home, a small, crackerjack team swimming at Melville s LiveLighter Club Challenge and a most enjoyable social evening for the night swimmers at Jackie s place. Marg Watson is doing a wonderful job liaising with our social members and reports on the group swimming at Claremont Pool. Another group swims at Bold Park on certain days. Those wishing to join them should contact Marg. A Melbourne Cup lunch was held at the Round House and 21 members and mates had a great time. REGISTRATION FOR 2018 Your Club membership is valid only until 31 st December To reregister go to and click on Join our club. As you register it is important for you to check that your personal details are up to date. If you have friends or acquaintances who may be interested, invite them to try a session with us. We would like more club members! The position of Registrar, who helps with membership and maintains the contact and emergency contact lists, is still open. Currently the duties of Registrar are being handled by Committee members on top of their usual roles. This is most undesirable. Anyone interested in becoming Registrar is asked to contact me. Your attendance at the Annual General Meeting to be held on 13 January is vital! In addition to hearing the 2017 reports and electing a new committee, the meeting will vote on the acceptance of a new Constitution and new Bylaws. Drafts have been sent to all members for their comments. Registered members only may vote at the AGM. I am hoping that members will make themselves available to carry out the tasks necessary to run the club. See you at the pool! 4 MESSAGE FROM COACH STU Now is the time to look back over the year to ask ourselves what we have achieved and could we do any better. Physiologists tell us that even if we maintain regular progressive training we can expect a 3% drop off in performance due to the so called ageing process. Many academics dispute this. They state that we in sport have generally not proven how progressive we can be as we age and ask if more is better for us. The undisputed fact is that we can be smarter, if our frontal lobes allow us to be. I cannot think of a single individual in the club who could not be more successful in the pool by improving their technique. I have shown most of you video of your technique and you would have looked at YouTube videos of elite swimmers for some basic feed-back. Certain drills help individuals but the next step in all sports where technique is paramount is self-visualisation, also called guided imagery, mental rehearsal, mediation and a variety of other things. No matter the term, the basic techniques are concepts are the same. Generally speaking, visualisation is process of creating a mental image or intention of what we want to happen or feel in reality. There are times when my only conclusion is that very few of us really want to improve our technique which can at times be a bit off-putting. Some of you have stated specific goals and a couple have shown some progress in those directions. Now is the time to revisit those ambitions. However every goal needs basic technique so see yourself keeping your head down, rotating, reaching, catching early without any peculiar motions of hand or wrist, practising an early vertical forearm and no dropped elbows or round arm swing on recovery. And that s just freestyle! Visualise your technique, visualise your goals over the next year and enjoy your swimming. This will keep the coaches happy too. Bunnings Sausage Sizzle Saturday 18 th November The weather gods were kind and gave us near perfect conditions at Homebase, Subiaco for our next-to-last fund-raising event of The cooks sweated at the hot plate, the servers were quite often run off their feet and Elizabeth Edmondson looked after the cash box all day in the shade of a big umbrella. Louise Norris had organised everything brilliantly and 17 club members were rostered over four sessions. Three cheers for the RAC who rescued Marg Somes when she was locked out of her car! Thanks to all who helped on the day and those who donated items, the venture was a roaring social and financial success raising more than $900! Knock, knock! Knock, knock! Knock, knock! Who's there? Who's there? Who's there? Anna! Oakham! Wayne! Anna who? Oakham who? Wayne who? Anna partridge in a pear tree! Oakham all ye faithful...! Wayne in a manger...! Sponsored by HBF Stadium Page 4

5 OPEN WATER SCENE Lake Leschenaultia 1.6km Sunday 12 th November 2017 Age Group Time Age Group place Travis O Neill :22 6 Peter Gray :54 2 Pamela Walter :13 1 Stuart Gray :05 1 Barry Green :31 2 This event was the first of the Masters OWS season and was also open to Swimming WA. 170 swimmers were sent off in two waves, meaning that the start was less congested. There was quite a bit of weed but the water temperature was delightful. However it wasn t all plain sailing for the organisers, Maida Vale. A water main had burst so there was no water in the showers and toilets, which were out of action, necessitating long trips to real toilets or go bush! Then the aerosol horn used to start the event was left in a plastic container which became too hot and can exploded, firing plastic shards into the vicinity. Fortunately no real problems. Extra members of the Gray family swam or came to support us as did Sara. Everyone brought different foods to share, making for a convivial and appetising lunch. Sara won one of the raffle prizes and Barry got closest to his nominated time in his age group and won a blue and white striped umbrella with Maida Vale printed on it. So lucky! Fremantle Ports Swim Thru, South Beach Saturday 9 th December 2017 Age Group Distance Time Age Group place Peter Gray km 1:18:08 2 Travis O Neill km 54:59 4 Pamela Walter km 59:14 4 Stuart Gray km 57:02 1 Ann-Maree Lynch Calnan km 28:35 2 Five Snappers swam in the Fremantle Ports Swim Thru. Travis was too fast for the rest of us. We didn t see him at the start or at the presentations so, unfortunately, he is not in the photo. All swimmers improved on their pace by a considerable amount except Peter but we can only compare a 1600 m swim with a 5 km swim so he also did very well. There are acres of grass at South Beach for relaxing on after a tiring ocean swim! Sponsored by HBF Stadium Page 5

6 BONDI SWIM 3 rd December Barry flew to Sydney to join his daughter Aleksandra in the 2.4 km Bondi to Bronte open water swim. As it happened Bronte Beach had been closed due to a big swell the day before and the event was modified to a 2 km swim around Bondi Bay. Some entrants chose not to swim the water temperature was 15C, resulting in many cases of hypothermia but the Greens were not deterred! SOCIAL The Claremont Pool swimmers were treated to morning tea at Pamela s at an Open House. Guests were shown over her new environmentally friendly home as well as a being given a bonus viewing of her artwork. Marvellous! Lillian Hadley, Pauline Diggins and Geoff Hadley A few days later Jackie entertained the nightswimming group at her place after-training. There was curry, condiments, coriander, cake, cream and candles and dips and fruit, too. Ann-Maree was probably trying to play it down but the cake and candles were to celebrate her birthday. CLUB CHRISTMAS CELEBRATIONS A nook is booked outdoors at the Boulevard Hotel for 5:00pm on Sunday 17 th December where we can enjoy tasty pizzas and time together. Pizzas are on the club and you buy your own drinks. Come and join us at Claremont Pool for a bacon and egg sandwich for breakfast at 9:00am on Wednesday 20 th December after our last swim before Christmas. 7 COUNCIL OF CLUBS MEETING 15 TH NOVEMBER Barry Green 1. The MSWA President, Damien Eyre, (Riverton) has resigned and Graham Senders (Claremont) is acting President. In addition, two positions on the Board are now vacant. 2. Director of Events, Fiona Wilkins, informed us that sanctioning of Club Challenges is to be done by Erica Thomas. MSWA will impose no caps on participation at Club Challenges but accepts that some clubs may have to set caps. State and National records can be set at any MSWA-sanctioned meet but World records can be set only in pools with the appropriate timing equipment and in WA only HBF Stadium satisfies this. 3. Pool calendar: The program for 2018 is still to be finalised. There was a call for an event where there are no DQs to encourage swimmers to compete and there was a suggestion to relax the FINA-based swimsuit code rules. Some clubs voiced concerns about the proposed changes to their normal event dates. The change for 2017, allowing all clubs to compete in every Club Challenge, needs to be evaluated. 4. Barry Green read the report on the incident involving a medical emergency during one of our training sessions. He highlighted the importance of keeping an emergency contact list up to date and of having as many swimmers as possible with the ability to perform CPR. A form is required to be filled out by all guest swimmers, swimmers trialling the club and other non-club Masters swimmers training with a club. 5. New constitution: MSWA has engaged a legal firm to advise it on the new constitution. In several months time a model will be made available to affiliated clubs. Several clubs are already going ahead with changes. 6. Sam Noall, MSWA Executive Officer, has left the job. No information was given as to her replacement. 7. Fremantle advertised the upcoming 10 km OWS as the only opportunity to simulate the Rottnest crossing and gain qualifying times for the Channel swim. Swimmers must have paddlers and carry out feeding etc. 8. The collection of fees for events was raised. Some clubs have not ensured that all registration fees for their swimmers are paid. Event flyers should make payment details clear. 9. MSWA has budgeted on 550 swimmers registering for the National Championships next year. 10. MSWA will not sanction the Albany OWS next Easter. It was adjudged that Albany does not have the organisation necessary to ensure a safe swim. MSWA has decided not to provide support for ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS AND DEADLINE My thanks to everyone who has helped by sending items to Snappets this year and to Barry Green, Pamela Walter, Marg Watson, Stuart Gray, Jackie Egan and Peter Lyster for their words and photos contributed to this issue. The deadline for the first issue for the new year is Friday 19 th January, Happy Christmas to you all and great swimming in 2018!
