SEASON WRAP-UP The swimming and diving team is looking to improve on last season's third place finish at the Big 12 Conference Championships. The Jayhawks finished the year with an 8-5 overall record in dual meets, including 1-4 in Big 12 duals. Kansas finished third at the Nike Cup, Nov , and tied for third at the Big 12 Relays, Oct. 15. Senior swimmer Amy Gruber was named the Collegeswimming.com's National Swimmer of the Week, Nov. 24, for her performance during the week of the Nike Cup, Nov She recorded Kansas women swimming's first-ever A-Standard time at the Nike Cup, when she won the 100 freestyle event with a time of She was also named the November Big 12 Swimmer of the Month for the second time in her career. Three Jayhawk divers, junior Casey Topol, sophomore Shelby Noonan and freshman Jenny Roberts, have each qualified to compete in the NCAA Zone D Regional Diving Meet, March LAST TIME OUT The University of Kansas swimming and diving team celebrated Senior Day as it defeated Iowa State, , in a Big 12 Conference dual meet, Saturday in Lawrence, Kan. With the win, the Jayhawks completed their dual meet season with an 8-5 overall record, 1-4 in Big 12 duals. Kansas honored its six senior swimmers, Aly Colver, Amy Gruber, Miranda Isaac, Katie Knighton, Jackie Krueger, Becca Zarazan and their parents prior to the 16- event meet. Senior Amy Gruber was one of the multiple event winners for the Jayhawks in the meet. The Bigelow, Ark., native won the 50 (24.04) and 100 (51.94) freestyle events in the final dual meet of her career. She was also a member of the two winning relay teams. Gruber, senior Miranda Isaac, junior Lindsey Urbatchka and sophomore Jenny Short won the 200 medley relay with a time of 1: Gruber and Urbatchka also teamed with senior Jackie Krueger and freshman Terri Schramka to win the 200 freestyle relay in 1: Schramka recorded two individual victories in the 200 freestyle (1:52.84) and the 200 backstroke (2:03.65). Isaac added to her relay victory with two individual victories of her own in the final dual meet of her career. The Hutchinson, Kan., native won the 100 (1:04.97) and 200 (2:21.23) breaststroke events. Junior Gina Gnatzig collected two individual victories in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:04.84, and the 1000 freestyle with a time of 10: Senior Becca Zarazan recorded an individual win in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2: Junior Lindsey Urbatchka added an individual event win in the 100 butterfly with a time of Sophomore Jenny Short won the 100 backstroke (58.48) to go along with her relay victory. 5 Clark Campbell Swimming Head Coach Third Year Kansas 93 Third-year head coach Clark Campbell hopes to build from last season s successes. Campbell finished his second year at Kansas with a 9-3 record in dual meets, the best record since the season. His team also finished third in the Big 12, one place better than the prior year. The Jayhawks had a record-breaking season, posting seven times that broke school records including five relays and the 100 and 200 backstroke. The swimmers also had nine other entries into KU s top-five record books. Under Campbell, Amy Gruber earned a spot on the All-Big 12 First Team. Campbell s team not only performed well in the pool, but also in the classroom. The swimming and diving team, which posted an impressive 3.39 overall grade-point average, led all sports at KU and also marked the highest GPA ever recorded by the KU swimmers and divers. The team was selected as an Academic All-American team by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA). The team s GPA was the highest among all Big 12 swimming and diving teams and the eighth-best among all public universities. The team had four Honorable Mention Academic All-Americans, 10 First Team Academic All-Big 12 selections and two second-teamers. Campbell, the 2000 Missouri Valley Conference Men s and Women s Swimming Coach of the Year, led several athletes to success at the national level and helped the Evansville program reach new heights. Impressively, Evansville established school records in all 19 men s and 19 women s events while Campbell was at the helm of the program in Those top marks included 12 Missouri Valley Conference records. During his four-year tenure at Evansville, his squads were named Academic All-America by the CSCAA all eight semesters. Prior to his appointment at Evansville, Campbell served as Clark, Cierra, Canaan, Cassie and Claire Campbell an assistant men s coach at the University of Minnesota from During his time in Minneapolis, the Golden Gophers captured Big Ten Conference titles in 1996 and 1998 while earning top 15 finishes all three years at the NCAA Championships. Campbell served as the head coach of the men s and women s programs at West Virginia Wesleyan from and directed that school into a top 10 NAIA program in just two years. He was named the NAIA Swimming Coach of the Year in Campbell competed as a professional triathlete for seven years before his coaching career began. After turning professional at the age of 19, he became one of the most consistent top- 10 finishers on the pro circuit. During his career, Campbell was self-coached. He was the 1986 National Long Course Champion and the 1990 runner-up at the United States Triathlon Series National Championship. 6 Kansas vs. October 14, 2004 The University of Kansas swimming and diving team lost to, , in Kansas first dual meet of the season, Oct. 14, at Robinson Natatorium. The dual meet consisted of 16 events including one and three-meter diving. The highlight of the meet for the Jayhawks came in the meet s final event, the 200 freestyle relay. Seniors Amy Gruber and Jackie Krueger, along with freshmen Anne Liggett and Terri Schramka, finished with a time of 1:36.07 to win the race. The 200 freestyle relay time was the fastest ever recorded by a Jayhawk team in Robinson Natatorium I was really pleased with our team s performance tonight, head coach Clark Campbell said. The relay times were great and the team should be very proud of how they performed, especially this early in the season. Gruber recorded another win in the 50 freestyle event and a second place finish in the 100 freestyle. The Bigelow, Ark., native finished the 50 free in a time of and the 100 free in a time of Junior Lindsay Urbatchka recorded one more victory for the Jayhawks in the 100 butterfly event. Overall, tonight was a fantastic way for us to start the season Kansas at the Big 12 Relays October 15, 2004 The University of Kansas swimming and diving team finished tied for third, Oct. 15, at the 2004 Big 12 Relays at Robinson Natatorium. The Jayhawks earned 60 points to tie with Border Showdown rival Missouri. Both teams finished 34 points behind second place. A&M won the team championship in the meet that consisted of 16 different relays and two diving flights. The meet, hosted by Kansas for the first time since 2000, was highlighted with a Kansas first place finish in the meet s final event of the day, the 100 freestyle relay. It was the second consecutive meet in which the Jayhawks won in the final event. The same four swimmers combined to finish second in the 200 freestyle event in a time of 1: It was a fun and exciting day of swimming, head coach Clark Campbell said. We got to see a lot of racing and got a lot of people involved with each of the relays. It was a good opportunity for us to see what we need to work on. In diving action, sophomore Shelby Noonan and freshman Bryn Conley combined to finish sixth in the one-meter competition. Noonan, Conley and junior Robyn Karlage combined for a fifth place finish in the three-meter event. We shook some of the rust off and performed better in the second session today, Campbell said. 7 Kansas vs. A&M October 16, 2004 The University of Kansas swimming and diving team lost to A&M, , in a Big 12 dual meet, Oct. 16, at Robinson Natatorium. The loss drops the Jayhawks dual meet record this season to 0-2. The meet consisted of 16 events including one and threemeter diving. Senior co-captain Amy Gruber provided the highlight of the meet for the Jayhawks in the 100 butterfly event. The Bigelow, Ark., native won the race in a time of and finished second in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1: This marks the second consecutive dual meet Gruber has collected an event win and a runner-up finish. This weekend has been one of the toughest we have ever had, head coach Clark Campbell said. We started to run out of gas towards the end of today s meet. I was still pleased because even though we were tired, we were still swimming better than earlier in the week. Kansas recorded a couple of runner-up finishes to go along with Gruber s in the 200 freestyle. Kansas at SMS October 29, 2004 The University of Kansas swimming and diving team defeated SMS, , and set four new pool records, Oct. 29, at the Hammons Student Center in Springfield, Mo. The dual meet win was the first for the Jayhawks this season, moving their record to 1-2. KU won eight of the meet s 11 events which included a one-meter diving competition. Freshman Terri Schramka recorded two pool record performances on the night, which included her individual first-place finish in the 200 freestyle with time of 1: Schramka, along with senior Amy Gruber, junior Lindsey Urbatchka and freshman Anne Liggett set a new pool record in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1: The 200 medley relay team of Urbatchka, senior Jackie Krueger and sophomores Hannah Bakke and Jenny Short set a pool record in a time of 1: Junior Gina Gnatzig recorded the fourth pool record of the night for Kansas in the 100 backstroke with a time of We had a really good meet for the first part of this weekend, head coach Clark Campbell said. 8 Kansas at Missouri October 30, 2004 Kansas vs. Illinois November 6, 2004 The University of Kansas swimming and diving team lost to Border Showdown rival Missouri, , in a Big 12 dual meet, Oct. 30, at University Natatorium in Columbia, Mo. The loss dropped the Jayhawks' dual meet record this season to 1-3 and 0-3 in Big 12 duals. Missouri also picked up one point in the Border Showdown competition with the victory. 9 Kansas at the Nike Cup November 18-20, 2004 The Kansas swimming and diving team took third place at the Nike Cup in Chapel Hill, N.C. The Jayhawks recorded 614 team points and finished behind second-place North Carolina by 190 points. Seven events, including the three-meter diving competition, took place on the final day of the three-day meet. It was a great three-day meet for us, head coach Clark Campbell said. We had some great individual performance and we also had an outstanding team battle for third place with a nationally-ranked team in Virginia Tech. Kansas third day of competition was highlighted by a couple of first place finishes. 12 Kansas vs. Iowa State February 5, 2005 The University of Kansas swimming and diving team celebrated Senior Day as it defeated Iowa State, , in a Big 12 Conference dual meet, Feb. 5, in Lawrence, Kan. With the win, the Jayhawks completed their dual meet season with an 8-5 overall record, 1-4 in Big 12 duals. Kansas honored its six senior swimmers, Aly Colver, Amy Gruber, Miranda Isaac, Katie Knighton, Jackie Krueger, Becca Zarazan and their parents prior to the 16-event meet. Our kids stepped it up on Senior Day, head coach Clark Campbell said. We were pretty emotional entering the meet, but we came out and swam well. Anytime you can get a Big 12 dual meet win, it is big. Senior Amy Gruber was one of the multiple event winners for the Jayhawks in the meet. Junior Casey Topol, sophomore Shelby Noonan and freshman Jenny Roberts have each qualified behind the strength of individual performances during the season. I am very proud of the way our divers have competed this year, diving coach Eric Elliott said. I thought we had some talent coming into the year, but they have really impressed me. Each diver has had a great attitude and positive work ethic all season. It has really paid off. Noonan, the only Jayhawk to compete at the regional meet last season, qualified on the three-meter board with her performance at the Nike Cup, Nov. 20. The Edmond, Okla., native won the three-meter competition at the Nike Cup with a championship-meet score (11 dives) of Roberts qualified on the one-meter board with her first-place finish at Drury, Jan. 28, where she scored dual-meet (six dives) points.
