1 JUNIOR TAS SPORT (TERM 1 WEEK 9) The final round of Junior TAS Cricket and Hockey took place last Saturday and our young Redbacks went out with a bang! Our cricket teams played some very close, hard fought matches whilst our hockey teams put everything they have learned over the last two months into practice to come away with easily their best round of the season. In the cricket, Year 5 Blue recorded a final ball victory over Sheldon College in what was possibly the most exciting finish of the season. The Year 4 s, Year 5 Red and Year 6 all went down in very close matches against Redeemer and TSAC, whilst the Junior Open side completed an undefeated season, downing Faith in a commanding performance. The major highlight from the round was a spectacular hat-trick from Junior Open player, Lucas Wood. These are incredibly rare in the game of cricket and Lucas will remember the feat for many years to come. It brings back memories of watching Peter Siddle snare a hat-trick in the 2010/11 Ashes series at the Gabba. That in-swinging yorker to trap Stuart Broad LBW is forever etched in my memory. Our Junior TAS Hockey teams had their most successful round of the season. The early season premonitions of great improvement across all teams came to fruition as OC chalked up four wins and one loss. Impressive performances were seen by Year 5 Red and Year 5 White, keeping a clean sheet against Redeemer 2 and TSAC Blue respectively, whilst the Junior Open team recorded a satisfying win against a very strong St Paul s side, 6 3. Without a doubt, the match of the round goes to Year 4, recording their first win of the season, knocking over Sheldon 4 1. Well done to all hockey teams on showing a positive attitude all season. Your persistence finally paid off with some scoreboard success. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those involved in Junior TAS Cricket and Hockey this term. The teachers and coaches have done a wonderful job in guiding our huge number of teams through what was a very challenging season. It is also very pleasing to see the support our parents and supporters show our students each Saturday morning. Just this Saturday gone, I saw a number of parents proactively and positively offering players advice and support before, during and after the match. Last but not least, the players have shown a great deal of Redback spirit this term. We entered 11 teams into the draw, which is far and away the most of any school. This puts a great deal of strain on our depth, but also shows the great pride our students have in playing sport for OC. I m very proud to call myself a Redback! ROUND 7 HIGHLIGHTS: Lucas Wood snaring a hat-trick in the Junior Open match. A rare and very special achievement. Year 5 Blue Cricket winning a nail-biting match against Sheldon College. Preston Ree got the winning dismissal with the final ball of the match. Year 4 Hockey securing their first win of the season. The 4 1 victory over Sheldon is reward for all the hard work they have put in in the previous six rounds. The four wins Junior TAS Hocket recorded on Saturday morning. This is the most dominant round of hockey we have had this season.

2 REDBACKS IMPRESSIVE AT JUNIOR TAS SWIMMING CARNIVAL Last Wednesday 34 talented young Redback swimmers ventured out to the Chandler Aquatic Centre for the Junior TAS Swimming Carnival. In 2016, Ormiston took home second place, with WestMAC winning the carnival. In 2017, the team had a goal of improving upon our 2016 performance. A very good preparation had the group feeling confident as we approached the big day. The first two races of the carnival were the Open Medley Relays. Our girls team of Torryn Fisher, Chloe Snell, Ella Dixon and Rosie Prevost started the day perfectly, winning the opening event. Our boys team, comprised of Kody Fisher, Connor Mursalo, Riley O Brien and Joshua Burke took out third. This set the tone for the day, with blue, red and green ribbons galore for our OC swimmers. WestMAC took an early lead after the butterfly races and it was clear that they would once again be tough competition. The top four changed multiple times throughout the day and Sheldon, JPC, OC and WestMAC moved from first to fourth depending on the stroke being swum. It was the freestyle that decided the fate of the carnival though and this is where Sheldon and Ormiston came to fore. Heading into the relays there would have been less than 10 points separating the two schools. The relays were shared between the top four schools, with OC taking first place in both the 12 Years Boys and Girls and picking up a number of second place ribbons along the way. The final result saw OC finish second place behind Sheldon College, with WestMAC third and JPC fourth. The improvement of our girls was pleasing, as they went from fifth last year to third overall this year. What was most impressive though was the school spirit shown by our students. The joy on the faces of our swimmers as they exited the pool is priceless and shows how much they love representing the college. One particular moment stuck out for me. Early in the day I had to ask some of our team to put their hand up to fill in for a backstroke race. Whilst explaining the reasons behind needing to fill the race I was cut off by our Sports Leader, Frankie Goldsbrough, who simply said I ll do it. Frankie is not a backstroke swimmer, but understood the importance of helping out his fellow teammate who needed a rest before the relays. This showed great leadership and was indicative of the way our Year 6 students carried themselves on the day. This group should be very proud of themselves. Special mention should be made of Kody Fisher, who broke a Junior TAS record in the 10 Year Boys 50m Backstroke, with a time of Congratulations also to our Junior Open Girls, comprised of Rosie Prevost, Ella Dixon, Chloe Snell and Torryn Fisher who finished first in their age division. Overall, the teachers and coaches were very happy with the result. Although we didn t improve on our second place from 2016, we were much closer to winning the carnival, finishing only 20 points behind Sheldon. I would like to thank everyone involved in helping prepare the team. Thank-you to Jane Cunningham, Jemma Trendler, Tomoko Carson and Tanya Aston for accompanying the team out to Chandler last Wednesday. A very big thank-you to Peter Rosengren for coaching the team throughout Term 1 and for your continued hard work with the OC Swim Academy. Finally, a big congratulations and thank-you to our students. You are wonderful group of young people and I will very much miss watching our Year 6 swimmers compete next year. Looking forward to what we can achieve in 2018! REDBACK TV Episode 9 of RedbackTV has been uploaded to the Redback on the College website and features a special presentation on what the Redback community loves about OC sport. You will also find all of your Week 9 sporting news, highlights and updates. Mr Jay Dowdell Head of Junior School PE & Sport j.dowdell@ormistoncollege.com.au

3 TEAM OF THE WEEK In 2015 the Team of the Week concept was created to recognise students who display admirable qualities whilst representing Ormiston College. Each round there will be a Team of the Week named from our Saturday fixtures. Players can be nominated based on five different criteria which align with the ethos of Junior TAS Sport which has a focus on skill development, participation and enjoyment. These criteria include: Sportsmanship: Shows great sportsmanship towards their opposition, teammates, coaches and referees. Teamwork: Strives to include every member of the team. This could be through good gameplay, communication or just showing encouragement. Redback Spirit: Tries their hardest to do their very best right throughout the game. May not score the most points or goals, but is giving their very best for the team. Outstanding Skill: Shows great skill and ability throughout the game. Improvement: Always listens to their coach and is therefore showing great improvement week to week. The coaches from each team will nominate two players to be put forward for Team of the Week. All will be included in either the Cricket Team of the Week or the Hockey Team of the Week. Nominations will be added up to go towards the Team of the Term which will named and recognised at the end of Term 1. Please find the Round 7 Team of the Week below.
