The Power in the Water is a great meet for all swimmers to try and better their PBs and also just have fun racing in a positive, yet competitive, atmosphere. Casuarina Storm swimmers always show their best, whether it be in the warmups, on the blocks, in the water or finishing strong Thanks to our Coaches, Peter, Grant and Jaime, who eagerly cheered and supported our swimmers, and to the many parents who volunteered as timekeepers and officials - we can t do it without you. Thanks also to our team manager for this meet, Adriana who ensured our swimmers got marshalled on time. Full results for the Meet are available on the Swimming NT website under the Events Calendar or click HERE to get the PDF file. Here are some photos from the Meet. Please go to our Photobucket account at for all the photos from this and other Meets. 3 Short term goals: o Training : o Qualifying times: o Coaches Soap Box From a coaching perspective Grant and I have an established training plan that is specifically targeting 2 major events over the next 3 months; the first is the 2014 Metroll Casuarina Storm Invitational and then the SA Champs. We work in 7 to 10 week training blocks and attempt to have swimmers swimming fast at the end of theses cycles. During these periods we will also be competing at other swim meets such as Power in the Water etc. At these meets swimmers will be competing at all different phases of our training cycle so therefore could be competing tired and may not produce great swims at times. This is to be expected and I would suggest to parents not to berate swimmers for lack of effort but PLEASE understand that they are not going to hit a PB every time they dive off a block as this is not how our sport operates. Encourage and be supportive, that is what your child expects from you and that is what we expect from you. It is great to see many swimmers back in the pool and working hard. As you are all no doubt aware, your performance in the racing pool relates to your performance in the training pool. You need to train hard, train smart (improve skills) and also train on a regular basis. How many sessions?? This will vary from person to person, however if you look at our best swimmers, they seem to be to be the swimmers that train the most and also train the hardest. Quite a simple message really. We wish to take a big competitive team to the SA champs this season; it is a major coaching goal for us. You need to check qualifying times and set a training plan to achieve goals. A lot of our younger swimmers are starting to move into the 12yo and upwards age group and still only training 4 sessions a week. I m sorry but it is not enough. To be really good you need to do more. You may need to start getting up early and hitting some of the morning sessions. That is what great athletes do; they establish goals and do whatever is required to achieve those goals. There are a total of 8 training sessions available. If you are unsure of how many you should be doing ask Grant or myself and we will give you an informed opinion on whether you are doing enough or not. I see some great talent within our group who are restricting themselves by just not doing enough Parents please be aware that to compete at NT Champs and other meets you will need to have times recorded prior to nominating for events. It is important to know what you have swum and keep an eye at what is available at upcoming meets with the idea of trying to get as many swims as possible at NT champs ( this is particularly important in 100m, 200m and distance events). Don t leave it to the last minute, start working on this ASAP. If unsure please talk to Rosie, she will be able to help. 7 6 Rules for Becoming a Better Swimming Parent The start of a season is a good time to review some of the basics. And the first one is the role of a swimming parent. I should warn you here that I ll be repeating some points I made in a similar post almost exactly one year ago. Before I start, I should point out that swim parents are actually pretty good when it comes to interacting their kid s competitors, officials and coaches, at least in comparison with other sports. In fact, swimming didn t show up in any of the top 10 list I could find for worst sports parents. And this makes sense. Swimmers can t hear parents during competitions, when the worst behaviours come out. And we don t have an official that controls the course of the competition the way so many other sports do. But just because we don t see baseball/hockey parent type physical attacks in the stands, or hear vicious verbal abuse of officials, coaches and opposition, doesn t mean that swimming parents aren t a problem. Ask pretty much any coach and they ll tell you that parents are the worst part of their job. Here are 6 basic rules / suggestions that can help a parent become an asset to their team, and a positive force in their child s life. The first two are directly from USA Swimming. 1) Be your child s biggest fan, no matter what. Be positive and supportive, and help them feel better about themselves, especially after a poor swim. Your swimmer will feel enough pressure from their coach, their peers, and especially themselves that they don t need more pressure from their parents. In fact, swimmers perform best when they are relaxed. The perfect scenario is when they know that they can mess up in a race, and they will still be loved, supported and encouraged afterwards. 2) Don t coach. Coaching involves critiquing, and that implies criticism. You re just is to support your child no matter well how they do. Besides, the chances are overwhelming that the coach knows more than you about swimming. If you insist on telling your child how to swim a race, or how to swim a stroke, then your child is now guaranteed to disappoint either the coach or the parent. It s a classic no-win situation for the child. That kind of pressure is what makes kids quit. It really boils down to this. You ve trusted your child to this coach, so let them coach. And if you don t trust the coach, get your swimmer out of the program. Now. 3) Do NOT disrupt the practice. This seems obvious, but so often disregarded. The coach is trying to pay attention to all of the swimmers in the pool. Correcting, urging, cajoling, monitoring, etc. We really don t have the time or attention to start a conversation with a parent unless it s an emergency. Seriously.

4) Get involved Find a volunteer position you feel comfortable with, and help out Most teams are run by volunteers, and we need help to provide the complete program. Many volunteer positions require very little time, or are only required a few times a year. And many of you have expertise that can be an incredible help. 5) You are probably driving your kids to practices and meets. So please be on time. In fact, please be 10 minutes early. Late arrivals disrupt the flow of a practice. Our team policy is that swimmers should be at the pool and ready to swim at least 10 minutes ahead of time. Late pickups after practice is even more important. Please do not leave the swimmer alone for extended periods of time after practice, and especially if its dark out, or the facility is not crowded, or even closed. We had a huge problem last year with a few parents being up to an hour late picking up their children. This year, we ve had to instruct our coaches to leave immediately after any post-practice chats. We are not babysitters, and we are NOT responsible for your children once they leave the pool deck. 6) Pay attention to your team s rules on entering and scratching from meets. If something comes up and your swimmer can no longer attend, let the coach know as soon as possible IN WRITING. Personally, I know that after a long practice I won t remember a casual comment made by a parent concerning a meet. Also be aware that meets have scratch deadlines. The team still has to pay the entry fees if the swimmer is scratched after that date. Which means the parent is paying the entry fee. There s nothing we can do about that. One last suggestion. Every parent should read this incredible article by Steve Henson in The Post Game, What Makes a Nightmare Sports Parent And What Makes a Great One. An informal survey of hundreds of college athletes over 3 decades was conducted by two coaches (Bruce E Brown and Rob Miller of Proactive Coaching LLC), with two brilliant conclusions coming out. 1) The worst memory of these athletes from playing sports is the ride home from games with their parents. Even the most well intentioned parents critique performance, provide suggestions as to how to do better, or even criticise their team mates or coaches. The athletes hate that. Their advice: don t talk about their performance unless they raise the topic. A fascinating aspect of the survey is that kids love having their grandparents at the games. Grandparents are far more likely to just enjoy watching them participate and give them a hug later. No critiques.

2) This is the big point. The statement made by parents that made them feel the best about themselves and their sport. Just 6 words. I love to watch you play. That s it. A completely non-judgmental statement that gives complete support and makes them feel good about themselves. Those two coaches are brilliant. When it comes to your kids sports, act like a grandparent, and use those 6 words. Words by Rick Madge

McDonald 9 & Under Meet 1 20 Junior Casuarina Stormers took part in the first in a series of five McDonald 9 & Under Meets at Parap Pool. The McDonald s 9&Under Series is sponsored by the McDonald s Australia, and is run by Swimming NT in conjunction with regional clubs. All registered Northern Territory swimmers aged 9 years and under will have the opportunity to compete at four Darwinbased meets in this series. More information can be found in the introduction pages of the handbook. 4 individual events plus 1 relay Swimmers may swim 25m or 50m in a particular stroke (not both) 9yr olds wishing to swim 200m IM must have a previously recorded time of less than 1min10sec for 50m butterfly ( club trials acceptable)

Race Entries Please take a few minutes to read this text, click on the relevant links highlighted, explore the rules outlined and hopefully we can benefit from the upcoming Meet/Invitational in November. It became apparent last week that many of you don t know how to find your child s official Best Time (BT) online. This could be due to either being new to the club or never been shown. Robyn has kindly added a page on Cas Storm website which includes lots of relevant information for you to follow throughout the season. You can find the current BT and how to follow your own updates through Results Central after each event. The official BT is taken from Meet results, NOT Club Night, and is what we use for entries. These times CAN NOT be over written by new Time Trials, no matter how old they are unfortunately. The only way to improve these times is by swimming at a Meet which doesn t restrict due to Qualifying Times (QT). Our own Casuarina Invitational on 21st-23rd Nov DOES have QT for several events. If you current BT is outside of these times and you wish to swim the events then your only chance to Qualify is to swim the same events at Power in the Water Meet 1st Nov and/or Palmerston & Rural Invitational 8th Nov. Forward Planning is required. Time Trials are only required for an event never swum before at a Meet. A club night time will be acceptable. Time Trials are not required for Twilight events. Time Trials are not required for McDonald 9&Under except for 50m Butterfly or 200IM. I hope this is of some help to you. Please ask if in doubt. Kind regards, Adriana Casuarina Storm Race Entries Officer Knotts Crossing Resort Corner of Giles Street & Cameron Street, Katherine, NT 0851 PO Box 996, Katherine, NT 0851 Telephone:

Want your kid to become a champion in the pool? Yo Mom and Dad Want your kid to become a champion in the pool? IF YOU DO, THEN YOU SHOULDN'T COACH I listened to his Dad frantically outlining all kinds of last minute race instructions. This is a big race son. Don't forget to streamline out of your start and turns and remember, no breathing into the turns. You've got to make sure you get a good start and build the race in the second 100. You've got to make sure you don't back off like you did the last time.blah blah blah. His 13-year old son silently stood there, head down, looking at his toes. I could only imagine what he was thinking. I guess Dad didn't realise that his son already had a very good coach. More than likely Dad meant well and was trying to be helpful. I know for a fact, however, that Dad didn't have a clue that his pre-race coaching with his son was going to guarantee, as in you can take it to the bank guarantee, that the boy would have a lousy swim. Certainly if he had known this he would've kept his lips sealed and simply encouraged his son to just go out there and have fun. Throughout the swim, Dad's voice boomed out from the stands, Go Billy, come on kick Swim faster.keep those hands together boy Pick it up now Pick it up Yadda, Yadda, Yadda Unfortunately no amount of yelling and urging was going to get Billy to swim fast today. He was, as I had predicted, toast. His swim was several seconds slower than it should've been and, in the stands after the race, Dad couldn't contain his obvious anger and disappointment. What happened out there? You swam so badly. You didn't do anything we had talked about Why Billy? Why did you not do anything we had planned? Now Dad, just what exactly is Billy supposed to say to you here? Well gee Pops, I just thought, since I've been working so hard and so long, busting my butt to get up early, and pushing through mountains of pain and fatigue, that I'd just take this opportunity to waste all my training and embarrass myself, my coach and you in front of all these people Come on Dad Get with the program I have never met a swimmer who wants to swim poorly on purpose. Don't you know that Billy already feels badly enough without your angry critique? Are you

unaware that he probably feels just terrible that he let you down? Whether you know it or not, the last thing your boy wants to do is to be a disappointment in your eyes What he really needs after a bad race is your support, NOT your anger, disappointment and inappropriate and unhelpful critiques (Yes They are unhelpful coming from you, even if you know what you're talking about) You won't help him feel better about himself nor swim faster by going down this road All you'll get him to do is eventually hate himself, hate swimming and have a real hard time being around YOU In too many meets across the country Moms and Dad's are repeating the mistakes that Billy's Dad has made here. What they don't realise is that by becoming over involved in their children's swimming and coaching, they are killing their kids' enjoyment of the sport, setting them up to fail and insuring that their children will become swimming, drop-out statistics. Over 70% of kids between the ages of 8 and 12 prematurely quit their sport because of too much pressure from adults, (parents & coaches). So if you really want your child to go fast and as far as possible in this sport, let me coach you here. You have two important roles with your child that will pave the way for their swimming success. First, be your child's best fan. Support them. Love them unconditionally. Pick them up when they fall. Cheer for them. Don't tie their love and self-worth in your eyes with how fast they go in the pool. Second, DON'T COACH Don't sit in the stands and time them Don't film their stroke mechanics and do stroke critique sessions Don't remind them of everything the coach has been telling them Don't try to motivate or focus them before their races. Don't force them to sit down and set goals Don't force your goals on them Don't discuss their race strategy and what you think they should be doing. Don't critique their races afterwards and help them correct their mistakes unless they ask directly. These are all the coach's job, not yours The best swimmers in the world have taught me one thing about what kind of parenting breeds Olympians. Most of the Olympian's I've talked to or worked with over the years have had parents who were incredibly supportive and unobtrusive. They weren't pushy, they didn't coach and they weren't over involved Instead, they allowed their son or daughter to own the swimming. Remember, don't coach Your job is to love 'em, the coach's job is to shove 'em Words by Dr Alan Goldberg
