4 Thank You On behalf of Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) and McDonald s Palmerston, Coolalinga & Katherine, we would like to thank you for your generous contribution to McHappy Day The day was an amazing success and your support helped us break a McHappy Day fundraising record with more than $3.2 million raised nationally. This equates to more than 24,600 nights accommodation in a Ronald McDonald House. This money will help RMHC continue to run and further expand their programs around Australia and provide support for seriously ill children and their families at a time when they need it most. The combined efforts of the communities, local businesses and personalities across Australia helped contribute to this outstanding amount and we would like to personally thank you for your time and support. Once again, on behalf of all of us, a very big thank you for helping to make McHappy Day such a success and we look forward to your ongoing support in Sincerely, Tanya Pederick McHappy Day Event Manager Palmerston, Coolalinga, Katherine McDonald s Malcolm Coutts OAM Chief Executive Officer Ronald McDonald House Charities Soar in twenty one four TEAM MANAGEMENT APPOINTMENTS School Sport NT is seeking volunteers for Interstate Team Officials (Team Management) roles for the 2015Pacific School Games to be held in Adelaide from 21 st to 29 th November. 6 Increased Grant Funding for Sporting Groups Sporting clubs and organisations across the Territory can now apply for up to $5000 to help develop their sport following a funding boost by the Giles Government. Minister for Sport, Recreation and Racing Matt Conlan announced today that the Government has increased the maximum amount available for individual applications under the Grass Roots Development Investment Program from $3000 to $5000. This increase in funding is a part of the Giles Government s plan to increase participation in sport and recreation activities so more Territorians can lead active healthy lifestyles, Mr Conlan said. A total of $190,000 in funding is available in the Grass Roots Development Investment Program, which will help our sports right across the Territory grow. These grants help clubs and recreation groups implement a range of initiatives to benefit their sport including improving equipment and building club capacity. Mr Conlan said the Grass Roots Development Investment Program had been further enhanced with the program now open all year round. This will allow clubs and recreation groups to make submissions at any time, ensuring they have the time to research their project, source the required information and provide a quality submission, he said. All submissions will then be assessed on a quarterly basis and clubs and recreation groups notified soon after. Mr Conlan also flagged further improvements for next financial year including a simpler online process and an upgrade to the online grants system that will make navigating the system easier. Recipients of round one grants in 2014 included: $3000 for grandstand seating for players and spectators (MacKillop Sharks Rugby League Football Club) $3000 for portable baseball mounds to improve safety (Darwin Baseball League) $2970 for a PA System for events (Arunga Park Speedway Association Incorporated) $3000 for the development of orienteering maps for Alice Springs and Katherine (Top End Orienteers Incorporated) Round two of the Grass Roots Development Investment Program for 2014 are now open and will close for assessment on 28 February Applications must be made online at: For further information contact the Department of Sport, Recreation and Racing on free call
7 The Solomon Local Sporting Champions program is an Australian Government initiative designed to support young people participating in state, national and international sporting championships as an athlete, coach or official. Applications are now open for the third round for 2014/15. There are 36 Grants of up to $500 for Solomon (Darwin & Palmerston) residents available for the 2014/15 financial year. 12 Open water stars get their tail feathers wet to launch the 2015 Swim the Swan Network Ten sports journalist Lachy Reid has today challenged Australia s Open Water swim team members Rhys Mainstone and Simon Huitenga to an open water race with a twist in Perth s iconic Swan River. Today s race marked the launch of the 2015 BHP Billiton Aquatic Super Series Swim the Swan open water competition with a test of core strength and balance as the stars went head to head in a stand up paddle board competition. Huitenga, a silver medallist at the 2013 Australian Open Water Championships and World Championship representative in 2013, believes Western Australia has a great open water community and Swim the Swan only adds to the excitement of the season. WA has a huge open water following so it s great to have an event like Swim the Swan which offers open water swimmers of all categories a chance to race against some of the best in the world, said Huitenga. With events ranging from 500m to 10km there is a race for all fitness levels. Whether you re racing to improve fitness or to win some wicked prizes it s a great way to start a summer Sunday morning. National open water coach and performance manager Ron McKeon says Swim the Swan could bring athletes from all over the world to compete in Perth this February. With the inclusion of the elite component, Swim the Swan has attracted a significant amount of international interest with countries like the United States of America, Japan, New Zealand, Italy, Canada and the United Kingdom potentially sending a contingent of athletes to Perth, said McKeon. BHP Billiton Iron Ore Vice President Corporate Affairs, Julius Matthys, said the Swim the Swan competition was not only a great community event, but is also popular with the Company s employees. The Swim the Swan competition gets our employees excited each year. In the past two years we have entered teams of more than 100 people, and we hope to have even more competing this year, he said. The Swim the Swan competition is a great opportunity for Western Australians to come together to either compete as a swimmer or to enjoy the event as a spectator from the banks of the Swan River, he added. Swim the Swan will see swimmers race over five distances; 500m, 1.25km, 2.5km, 5km and 10km. There is over $80,000 worth of prize money up for grabs plus age group winners will receive a Swim the Swan prize pack. Registrations are now open for the 2015 Swim the Swan on Sunday 1 February. To register visit The BHP Billiton Aquatic Super Series is exclusive to Western Australia, managed by Swimming Australia and supported by the Western Australian Government through Tourism WA and BHP Billiton.
