electronic NEWS MARCH - APRIL 2013: version 41 MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE OFFICER Congratulations to everyone who participated in a highly successful Leah Cullen Relay Challenge the response to the 2013 event was very encouraging and it was great to see teams from Mojo365, Swim Dynamics and Royal Life Saving compete. Swimming Northern Territory will be looking for a new sponsor of the Distance Series for the Season as long term sponsors daz- l have reviewed their sponsorships and will be looking to focus on grass roots activities in the Nightcliff area. John Moffatt and Creina Scally have been outstanding contributors to swimming in Northern Territory as sponsors and across a myriad of other roles. I am sure all our members join our Board in thanking John and Creina for their generous contributions. We now have only two meets to go until the 2013 Vorgee NT Short Course Championships in Alice Springs over the weekend 24 th 26 th May. We have a strong contingent of 18 swimmers from the Swimming South Australia Development Squad heading up to Alice in what is shaping up to be a very exciting Meet. Prior to the Championships we have our final Power in the Water Meet for the season at Casuarina Pool on Saturday 20 th April with the Darwin Invitational to follow the week after at the same venue. Great to see the Macca s Mini Clinics delivered by our Community Swimming Officer attracting so many swimmers with over forty attending the two clinics in the first week of the current school holidays. 3 ASCTA REPRESENTATIVE Expressions of Interest from current ASCTA members are sought for a Coaches Representative to attend the ASCTA AGM on Wednesday 8 th May. Expressions of interest are sought via to the Executive Officer: executiveofficer@nt.swimming.org.au by 4.00pm on Thursday 18 th April. SELECTION COMMITTEE UPDATE Thank you for those who nominated a place on the Selection Committee. At the Board Meeting on Monday 8 th April the Board appointed Rose Gerlach and Rebecca Mather-Brown to join Karen Messenger and Jenny Culgan on this important Committee. SNTI ACADEMY PROGRAM LEADERSHIP GROUP The original call was to be for one swimmer to fill the vacancy on the Leadership Group but with the departure of one of our true leaders, Tobias Barnes to Queensland we now have two vacancies to fill. Tobias has been an outstanding member of Darwin Swimming Club and Swimming Northern Territory and will be sorely missed. The Athlete Development Committee in consultation with the Selection Committee is seeking nominations from Clubs for current member swimmers to be considered for the Swimming Northern Territory Academy Program Leadership Group. The Academy has the potential to make a significant impact on improving athlete development however this will happen only if an Academy position is accompanied by commensurate athlete commitment. As a result only swimmers who apply and fully commit to the program will be accepted. All nominations must also be accompanied by a letter of support from the Club Coach. Successful applicants will be monitored to ensure that continual commitment to the program is maintained for the athletes retained in the program.

SNTI ACADEMY PROGRAM LEADERSHIP GROUP CRITERIA Nominations are sought from Clubs and supported by their Coaches. These will be referred to the Selection Committee. 5 AUSTRALIAN SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS The Australian Swimming Championships are only two weeks away and you would need to go back many years to see when Swimming Northern Territory last had three qualifiers for the Championships. Good luck to Savannah Rossingh, Lachlan Boye and Harrison Oakhill when the Championships commence on the 26 th April. Harrison and Lachlan are currently in Adelaide at the 2013 Georgina Hope Swimmers Foundation Australian Age Championships along with Jesse Staples, Nikaiya Payne, Isaac Boye and Brody Leibhardt.

2013 SKILLS DEVELOPMENT CLINIC It was no surprise that we received great feedback about Gary Barclay and the Skills Development Clinic in February. Gary has been an outstanding performer at every post he has held in swimming, be it a Director of Swimming Australia, CEO of Nunawading Swimming Club, Coach or author. Gary has kindly sent us a note and link to his 50 Swim Tips ebook: Hi everyone, Congratulations on your efforts at the Swimming NT Skills Development Clinic last weekend. We certainly covered a lot of information including stroke technique on the 4 strokes, individual medley work, and starts and turns on the 4 strokes. I enjoyed working with you and look forward to my next trip to Darwin. For those who are not aware, you are welcome to get a free copy of my 50 Swim Tips ebook at By downloading the book you will also receive regular s with improvement ideas for your swimming. You are also welcome to: Like The Swimming Expert on Facebook Follow The Swimming Expert on Twitter Watch The Swimming Expert on You Tube Keep training hard and good luck with your racing over the remainder of the summer season! Regards Gary A reminder that the GO Club PB workbooks for 2013 can be completed online and are due soon. What are the benefits of participating in the GO Club PB? Clubs can build a picture of their strengths and weaknesses, by comparing their results to previous years or by viewing them for the first time. Clubs will become eligible for 10 x $500 cash grants drawn at random. Clubs who complete the GO Club PB will be eligible to apply for the SAL Club Equipment Grants. Participating clubs will receive a results poster comparing their club to the average scores for their state and the national average. Clubs achieving Green, Bronze, Silver, Gold or Platinum will receive a rewards pack including a certificate of achievement, poster, badge for their club banner and the use of the GO Club PB logo for their newsletter or website. Clubs who achieve Gold and Platinum will gain access to an appearance from a member of the Australian Swim Team and/or a mentor coach. Please visit or for inclusive standards and complete the online workbook.

ACADEMY PROGRAM SPONSOR: BODYFIT BodyFit NT s Swimming Group Program is gym based and designed to increase the strength, power, endurance and flexibility for all swimmers. Furthermore the program designed to reduce injury and provide a foundation for future training and competition. The progress of each swimmer will be reported to their swimming coach to ensure both sessions are complementary the time of the year (racing, peaking etc) and individual goals. The Program will follow the School calendar so enrolment costs will cover an entire Semester of supervised gym training. The training session s themselves will be every Wednesday afternoon from 3:15-4:15pm and Friday morning from 6-7am at BodyFit NT at Stokes Hill Wharf. Holiday programs may also run between semesters. If you would like more information on the program please feel free to contact the office on or Robbie@bodyfitnt.com.au Robbie McCullagh B. AppSc(Exercise & Sports Science), M. ExSci(Strength and Conditioning) Strength & Conditioning Coordinator Wow! What sort of jellyfish is that? SURF NEWS As Australia s leading lifesaving authority we are often asked about jellyfish. Just lately we ve had questions about really big jellyfish swimming in harbours and coastal waters - usually spotted from jetties and boats. We ve also responded to people saying they ve been stung in Darwin s Lake Alexander. So what s going on?

SURF NEWS Wow! What sort of jellyfish is that? Firstly our wet season is the active season for most jellyfish to grow, develop, feed and breed. That s the main reason we see lots at this time of year. The really big ones are Giant Rhizozome jellyfish. They deliver a moderate to severe sting but not usually life-threatening like a Box Jellyfish. Around Darwin the species is usually Lobonema Mayeri - just call it Lobonema. They are predominantly a translucent white but may have pink or blue tinges. If stung use vinegar then ice packs. They are big, sometimes 40cm across. In Lake Alexander there are some Cassiopea Andromeda. You probably won t swim into them but you may tread on one because they love to lay upside down in shallow water. They are usually 10-15cm across, look a bit like a cauliflower and are easy to spot in shallow water at the boat ramp end of the lake. If you tread on a Cassiopea it will automatically release its nematocysts (stinging cells) within a floating film of mucus and it can feel like lots of little stings all over you. Ice may help and local anaesthetic creams such as Stingose or Paxyl can bring some relief too. An annoying, itchy sting.

SNTI INDIGENOUS SWIMMING PROGRAM Well done to our Indigenous Sport and Active Recreation Program Officer, Mark Walker on the delivery of the hugely successful remote schools carnival in Kintore in collaboration with Swimming Australia and Walungurru School. 150 Children participated in the Carnival that followed several days of skills development sessions with students from six schools participating; Kiwirrkurra School, Yirara College (Kintore annex), Watiyawanu School, Papunya School, Haasts Bluff School and Walungurru School The program followed a similar structure to the hugely successful Bush Schools Swimming & Lifestyle Clinic that have been developed and hosted by Yipirinya School in Alice Springs for a decade.

ACADEMY PROGRAM Following the finalisation of Intake Three of the Swimming Northern Territory we are delighted to announce the swimmers who have achieved Tier 1 and Tier 2 status. The Athlete Development Committee, responsible for the review and recommendations of the program structure will be meeting before the end of March to further assess the program and possibly identify additional ways of best servicing our highest performing swimmers through this program. Congratulations to the seven swimmers now in Tier one and eighteen in Tier 2. 11 RISING STAR FOUNDATION: MERCHANDISE SALES Regrettably we will soon be losing the outstanding services of long term volunteer, the dynamic Creina Scally who will be stepping back from her involvement in swimming to channel her vast energies into other (very lucky) not for profit roles. Creina has been a fantastic driver of the Rising Star Foundation and the relationship with Vorgee our NT Championships naming rights sponsor and swimwear provider. We are now looking for someone to learn from Creina and take on the role of merchandise sales at our sanctioned meets, Creina has provided a summary of the merchandise position: In conjunction with SNTI staff, order, maintain and price stock Liaise with SNTI staff to ensure price lists for meets are prepared Display and sell stock at SNTI Meets Following each record sales and deliver monies to the SNTI office for banking Stock take at the end of the financial year and forward to the SNTI office Provide a brief report to the SNTI Board at the end of the season Maintain drinks fridge (in the booth) as required Review Vorgee products and pricing structure This important role has some great personal benefits including: The opportunity to meet and talk with swimmers and parents from all clubs Increase your knowledge of swimming products and their importance to our swimmers You get the best position at the pool to watch the swimming, under the McDonald s Tent Selling great products with all profits assisting SNTI swimmers Promote and support our great sponsors, Vorgee and Schweppes (Gatorade products) Mark the following dates in your diary!!!
