1 electronic NEWS 30 November version 27 MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE OFFICER Since the last newsletter a couple of weeks back there has been plenty going on and to all involved in activities such as the Flipper Clinic headed by two great coaches, Glenn Beringen and Chris Twomey and also those who made sure the 9 th Bush Schools Swimming & Lifestyle Clinic was a huge success, thank you and well done. We ve also held a Daz-L Distance meet and both Casuarina Storm and Alice have hosted invitationals. As we head into Christmas we maintain a very busy schedule with the Skills Development Clinic headed by John Wallace on the 19 th and 20 th December, a visit from Australian Open Water swimmer, Codie Grimsey from the 11 th to 14 th December and we also have two more meets to squeeze in, the McDonald s 9 & Under Meet #2 at Parap Pool on the 3 rd and the NT Long Course Qualifying Meet at Casuarina Pool over the weekend 17 th to 18 th December. I think it might just be time for a little break after that! This year Swimming Northern Territory and Swimming Australia provided eight coaches and presenters including Adam Pine, Lara Davenport, Brad Thurlow (Alice Swimming Club), Peter Tonkin, Hannah Rochford, Jon Burns, Kia Naylor and Paul Schindler.

2 Keen swimmers pack the deck at the carnival on the final day Over 100 participants enjoyed a varied program of events with a drumming workshop and hockey skills session amongst the activities away from the pool, Amata Anangu, Haasts Bluff, Indulkana Anangu, Kintore, Mimili, Papunya, Watiyawanu Kuula, and our hosts, Yipirinya. The final event of the carnival Rescue Boat Challenge, is always popular and action packed All the feedback to date has been extremely positive and we were delighted with the working relationship with all the partners in the program. We look forward to being involved in the 10 th year of the clinic in 2012.

3 FLIPPER CLINIC WITH GLENN BERINGEN AND CHRIS TWOMEY Return visits to Darwin from Glenn Beringen and Chris Twomey delivered an outstanding two day clinic for 15 senior and 17 junior swimmers over the weekend Saturday 19th to Sunday 20th November. The weekend included sessions in the pool complemented by dry land sessions including yoga by Sanjit Das of OM Yoga and presentation by Sarah Elliott, Sports Medicine Coordinator and Physiotherapist with the Northern Territory Institute of Sport. The Institute places great importance in Sports Medicine, an area of vital importance for all athletes because of 'two way impact'. Sport can cause injury to physical wellbeing and injury can affect performance in sport. Elite athletes are often those that can endure the longest, hardest, best periods of training unaffected by interruptions such as injury. This makes injury prevention and appropriate, fast and thorough injury management a key component of performance enhancement. Chris Twomey strikes a pose during the final pool session of the Clinic Chris Twomey is a very well respected and enthusiastic coach who is the current Head Coach at Christchurch Westside Swimming Club in Perth. Glenn Beringen, a silver medallist at the 1984 Olympic Games has enjoyed a successful career coaching both in his home state of South Australia and with the Australian Institute of Sport, training Olympic heroes including Petria Thomas and Sarah Ryan.

4 HACKETT: NO POOL, NO CAREER Three time Olympic swimming gold medallist, Grant Hackett was guest speaker at the Hotel Victor on Thursday, November 10 and weighed into the pool debate on the south coast. Representing Westpac and volunteering his time to come to Victor Harbor to raise funds for the Fleurieu Community Foundation, the swimming champion said that every coastal community should have access to a swimming pool. "When you have water, which the south coast has, you need to teach people how to swim. You look at the lifestyle of coastal communities and it is critical you have a pool," Hackett said. "Adelaide has a great new facility and it is a good opportunity for this region to have one as well. "I began swimming at Innisfail in Queensland and we had a pool and my swimming career would be non-existent without the pool. It is a fundamental part of Australian culture, as swimming as a sport, has a proud history. "Sporting facilities are the heart of regional communities and it becomes more than just a pool, but a meeting place," Hackett said. Hackett talked about the ups and downs of his sport and all the hard work that goes into having success. "There is a lot more that goes into swimming than the 15 minutes the world sees when you swim in the 1500 metres. My initial ultimate goal was to emulate the efforts of Kieren Perkins, who was a hero of mine. "The pinnacle of my sporting career was winning gold in Sydney (2000 Olympics) in front of a home crowd," Hackett said. The Grant Hackett Sports Night raised more than $9000 for the Fleurieu Community Foundation, which will go to community projects. The Foundation's Anita Grantham said there was more than 160 people in attendance. "The event was a tremendous success not only for the Foundation with the funds that were raised, but for those who attended. "Feedback has been really positive all round, as Grant was such an interesting and charismatic speaker and spoke for around 45 minutes before taking questions from the floor," Anita said. LIFESAVERS OF THE YEAR ANNOUNCED ANDREW MCGUINESS, ISLA MCCAW AND RYAN KERSHAW Congratulations to Palmerston & Rural Swimming Club member Isla McCaw who was one of three Darwin SLSC members who made a clean sweep of the Lifesaver of the Year awards, Isla (U19) with Andrew McGuiness and Ryan Kershaw (U17) were recognised for their amazing commitment during Tony Snelling, Chief Executive Officer of Surf Life Saving NT said, Isla McCaw, in her first year as an U19 member really hit her straps. With a list of achievements similar to clubmate Ryan this young woman has an incredibly positive attitude toward sport and the community service activities of Surf Life Saving. She is always quick to volunteer for volunteer water safety duty at community events and was recently inducted as a Lifeguard at the Darwin Wave Lagoon. Isla also gained her Offshore Rescue Boat Crew Certificate and is now part of the SLSNT SAR Team. Isla is a multi-skilled competitor and has been selected in our 2012 Interstate Team. Isla is destined for big things in 2012!

Any accredited official is eligible after submitting a copy of their Ochre card. Supporting this initiative has been the spot prizes for all volunteers at meets organised by Creina Scally. The volunteer lists from each meet are recorded so we can keep track of everyone who has helped. To assist in recognising the work of our regular volunteers, once you have assisted at five meets (or in the case of a two day meet, each day will count) we would like to provide a pack containing a shirt, hat and Swimming Australia NATIONAL TECHNICAL OFFICIAL ACCREDITATION UPDATE LOGBOOK. The objective is to provide you with a simple introduction to gain Technical Official accreditation. Please ensure your name goes onto the volunteer register that is circulated at each meet and used for the volunteer spot prize draw so we can accurately log your valued contribution.
