U P D A T E Promotion for Greater Melbourne The Swim Australia display at the Pregnancy Babies and Children s Expo in Melbourne from the 21 October to 23 October 2011 is sure to prove extra popular! Registered Swim Schools will have the option of applying for an elevated Accredited status. The process involves completing an extensive questionnaire, supplying certain documentation and undertaking on-site audit from an Assessor. Learning Innovation and Development Swim Australia s professional development and lifelong learning division SwimAHEAD has been working in overdrive. Improving teaching of swimming and water safety and enhancing swim school management have always been focuses. To this end, the inaugural annual SwimSOUTH Conference was conducted in Adelaide (6,7 Aug.) with the 2nd annual SwimTASSIE Conference expanded (SAT TM Competitive Swimming and Bronze Coach accreditation courses) in Hobart (24, 25 Sep.). The 9th annual SwimWEST Conference in Perth (15, 16 Oct.) will now encompass the WA Coaches Conference. This partnership with Swimming WA and asctawa ensures more choice is available for participants. Minor roles have also been played in asctabranch conferences NSW (20, 21 Aug.), QLD (20, 21 Aug.) and VIC (8,9 Oct.). What is particularly innovative though was the staging of the inaugural Better Water Seminar Series. These events will held in Brisbane and Sydney to coincide with the visit to Australia by Danish water treatment expert Dr Ole Gronborg. Following testing of systems at Westside Swimming to greatly improve water treatment, the seminars were a natural flow-on. Swim Australia is now much better position to assist in this critical area. To take this a step further, Swim Australia has partnered with Ozone 1 to provide Swim Schools with exclusive discounted prices on this highly effective secondary disinfection system. 4 SOUTH EAST ASIAN Aquatics Conference by Cindy Adair Bolakoso From Aug 17th 21st 63 delegates from all over South East Asia converged on Bangkok Patana School to participate in 5 days of professional development. The conference offered delegates the chance to obtain up to four professional certifications as well as participate in discussion forums, social networking events and a trade show. The event was opened with a Key Note Address presented by Mr James Penstone and Cindy Adair Bolakoso. The theme was Teaching in a Multicultural Environment. A fascinating hour was spent exploring the impact an Intercultural environment has on the way we teach and how our students see themselves and others. The certification courses offered included: - Swim Australia Teacher - Swim Australia Teacher of Competitive Swimming - Swim Australia Teacher of Babies & Toddlers - UK RLSS National Rescue Award Participants spent five action packed days participating in practical sessions in the pool, classroom lectures and workshops as well as observing real students in action each day from the home team Patana TigerSharks. Each day began with an interactive discussion forum aided by high-tech tool Etherpad and facilitated by Mr Nic Wilson, which saw coaches discuss topics such as Running Great Swim Events/Working with Swim Parents and Alternative Aquatics Ideas over breakfast. Between lectures there was some fun to be had as well as a chance to shop in the trade show which featured booths from some of South East Asia s biggest swim apparel and equipment suppliers Arena, Yoma, YingFa and Finis to name a few.
