In , Thomas picked up his fourth MAC Swimming Coach of the Year award by leading Ball State to an 11-3 dual-meet record and a second-place finish at the MAC Championships despite having just two seniors on the roster. The Cardinals had finished sixth at the league-event the year before, giving Thomas the best turnaround in the MAC for the season. Thomas collected his third MAC Swimming Coach of the Year award after the campaign, as the Cardinals turned in another solid improvement from the previous season, climbing from eighth to fifth at the league meet. The team also posted a 7-5 duel-meet record, while going 5-2 in conference action. From the to seasons, Thomas helped coach the program s latest MAC Diving Champion, as Dave Garrow collected three individual titles on the 1-meter board and a pair of championships on the 3-meter board. Swimming & Diving Support Staff Tom Collins - Director of Athletics Ball State University selected Tom Collins as its director of intercollegiate athletics Jan. 9, In his tenure at Ball State, Collins has directed the completion of the Scheumann Stadium renovation, put in place a new five-year gender equity plan and served as a significant member of the university s senior staff. It is clear at Ball State the administration has staked out a commitment to the true scholar-athlete model of intercollegiate athletics, Collins says. Couple that with the university s and the community s commitment to providing the student-athletes with outstanding facilities and a supportive atmosphere, and it becomes clear why Ball State has a proud academic and athletic tradition. Collins heads up a Ball State 19-sport intercollegiate athletics program with a rich tradition in academic and athletic success. Last year s football team made an appearance in the International Bowl, which was the school s first bowl berth since 1996, and capped off a 7-6 season, the best record for a Ball State team since the 1996 campaign. The baseball team won the 2006 Mid-American Conference Tournament and made its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since The women s soccer team won its first-ever MAC Regular-Season Championship in 2006 and repeated the feat in The women s basketball team advance to the 2006 WNIT and hosted Kentucky in a first-round game. Academically, Ball State student-athletes in all 19 of the school s intercollegiate athletic programs graded out better than the necessary 925 in the latest NCAA Division I Academic Progress Report, and 14 of the programs exceeded the national average for all NCAA Division I schools. Ball State was one of only four MAC schools, and the only NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision public institution in Indiana, which did not have a program record a score below 925. We are very pleased with the APR Report, Collins says. Our coaches, staff and support services do an outstanding job of making sure our student-athletes are getting an education, while growing socially and as student-athletes. In addition, Collins sits on the MAC s Finance Committee, was appointed to the NCAA Division I Amateurism Cabinet and serves as the baseball coaches liaison to the conference office. Collins resume includes working for some of the most recognizable names in intercollegiate athletics. While at Arizona State, he worked with athletic directors Dick Tamburo, Kevin White (currently the A.D. at Duke) and Gene Smith (currently the A.D. at Ohio State). Collins also worked with athletic director Sam Jankovich, while at the University of Miami, and his colleagues through the years include current A.D. s Jim Livengood (Arizona), Michael Alden (Missouri), Sandy Hatfield Clubb (Drake) and Vic Cegles (Long Beach State).
