1 The Monthly Wave Volume 3 Issue 3 April 2013 Building Confidence & Character One Stroke at a Time Welcome to April 2013 and the Beginning of a New Era! I am very excited to be working with all of you and to get everything started!! We have a lot of exciting events coming up this spring/summer season. The swim- a- thon will be held in May and I am honestly thinking about participating myself It has been a while since my last swim- a- thon, but a little workout (just 200 laps) would do me good I guess. Also, and most importantly, our camp will begin June 3 and run through the first week of July. The camp is going to be a great opportunity for swimmers to spend time with their fellow teammates of all ages and learn a lot about the technical side of swimming. Throughout the camp we will be using all sorts of equipment for dry land and water training. In the water we will work on important drills that will help improve strokes and use underwater cameras to allow the swimmers and coaches to see strokes from all angles. One last thing, If any parents are interested in helping with any aspect of the team please let me know because we would love to have as much participation from the parents of our swimmers as we possibly can. 4 Come join your Teammates for a fun & friendly afternoon of competition at our Nu Wave Intra Squad Meet at UNO on Sunday, April 21 at 1:00 pm. Team Photos will be taken promptly at 1:00 pm and individual photos will be taken throughout the meet. Various photo packages will be available for purchase. Warm- up begins at 1:30 pm, meet starts at 2:15 pm. Meet sign- up is available on Team Unify. Sixth Annual Nu Wave Swim- A- Thon May 11, 2013 Schedule: April 8- May 11 Pledge Period Saturday, May 11 Swim- A- Thon Riptides- 11:00-12:15 pm at Newman Pool Cyclones, Tsunamis, Pre National and National- UNO pool at 8:00-10:00 am at UNO Pool What is Swim-A-Thon? Nu Wave swimmers earn money for our team by swimming lengths of the pool. Swimmers have a two-hour period in which to swim a maximum of 200 lengths. For our younger swimmers, their goal is to complete a challenging set of 50 or 100 laps. Swimmers get pledges from family, neighbors or businesses to support their efforts. Donors can either pledge a certain amount of money per length, or make a flat donation in support of our team. Nu Wave is a 501 (c) (3) Nonprofit organizations, so all donations are tax-deductible. You will be receiving paperwork for fundraising in your very soon, as well as paper copies. To assist in Swim-A-Thon, each group of the program will have a go to person who will be available with forms, information, and details about the program. This person will also be available to collect donations at any time during the Swim-A-Thon. Donation collection can occur via cash, check, and credit card (charged to your account), with specifics being released in our correspondence regarding the Swim-A-Thon. Nu Wave is offering incentives for fundraising for each individual swimmer /fundraiser:

This program is ideal for individuals who are unable to make the year round commitment to swimming, but love to develop one s skill and compete. Summer Swim Team will be coached by our Nu Wave Coaches, Coach Jon and Coach Patrick. Swimmers will have the opportunity to compete in meets with the rest of the year round Nu Wave swimmers. Practices will be held Monday- Friday from 3:30-4:30 pm at the Newman Pool from June 3 until July 21. Registration is available online now under EVENTS. Team Unify On Deck Parent and USA Swimming Deck Pass On Deck Parent and Deck Pass are very useful and informative tools parents and swimmers can download onto your smart phone to track swimming performances, track swim entries and results, motivate your swimmers and much more. To download Team Unify On Deck Parent, go to your app store and select On Deck Parent. Team alias is lawave. On Deck Parent will sync with our Team Unify platform. To download USA Swimming Deck Pass, go online to USA Swimming, and set- up an account. Once signed in on your computer, you will see DECK Pass on the Home Page; follow directions to Create DECK PASS. You will have to create an account for yourself and each child. After completing this process, you can download USA Swimming Deck Pass onto your smart phone. This is a helpful tool to track swimmer progress and goal settings.

10 Coaches Corner Riptide- Uptown- Marshall Greetings Swimmers and Parents! Our 8 & Under Swimmers took thirds overall out of 16 teams on March at the 8 & Under Regional Championships. The following swimmers scored points for the team as individual swimmers: Gabrielle Prevost, Cesar Espinoza, Josie Leali, Ava Fischer, Nikki Leali, Virginia Cunningham, Hannah Plaisance, Sopia Busby, Briana Robertson, Addielade McMahon, Brianna Leathem- Brazzini, Joshua Pugh, Pete Metzinger, Julian Duronslet, Marcel Thionville, Laila Beverly, Trinity Belott, Alex Primeaux, Margo Thionville, Derek Zang, Nick Lovell. This was the FIRST MEET for Hunter Claiborne and Addielade McMahon- - congratulations swimmers! You can check out the results by signing in to nolaswimming.com and look under My Account for My Meet Results. Highlights included Virginia Cunningham's first place finish in the 7 year old 25 Breast! Ava Fischer's second place finish in the 7 year old 25 Breast! And Derek Zhang's multiple second place finishes to end up fourth overall in points for 8 year old boys. Way to go!!!! Everyone who participated deserves a big pat on the back! Swimmers who also swam with big heart were: Grace Bergeron, CJ Duronslet, Sarah Hescock, Brooke Lonseth, Lauren McQueen, Jack Primeaux, Bernard Robertson IV, and Abbie Spera. Over the break, look at Times/Standards on the nolaswimming.com home page under Motivational Times. Check/Print out the 10 & Under National Time Standards. We will be looking at these in practice to set some goals, but would be far ahead if you take 20 minutes to look over these with your swimmers. Print their times and compare! Coach Marshall Cyclone- Uptown- Coach Tess and Coach Jon The cyclones were well represented this year at the Louisiana state championship. With 9 swimmers from the uptown group attending the meet, we had personal bests across the board and some much needed team bonding time. I am proud of the way this group of young swimmers represented Nu Wave in the pool and out. We have come a long way this season and have become some of the fastest swimmers in the state. I would like congratulate the entire cyclone group for their commitment and progress this season. I am hopeful that our state team will grow and that our practice attendance will increase as we head Into our summer long

11 course season. I look forward to pushing our group to the next level and encourage cyclones to attend Nu Wave's summer camp for whatever time they can this summer. See you in April! Special Congratulations to Derek Zhang! Derek broke three (3) Nu Wave Team Records, 8 & under 50 Back, 50 Fly, and 100 Fly. UNO Riptide and Cyclone- Coach Brian and Coach Chris This has been a great season for the kids in the Cyclone/Riptide group out of UNO. The kids have done a great job of adjusting to practice changes and working with numerous coaches. When I look at the results we had in our championship meets over the last month and think back to the first week we swam together the week after Hurricane Isaac, it is really impressive to see how much we have improved. We had a good number of kids swim at the District Championship meet in Baton Rouge in late February. Ross Jacobson continued to drop more time in nearly all of his events including an awesome 5 second drop in the 100 back. Ross has not only been improving in meets, he has also been improving his practice habits. He is always one of the first ones in the pool, never gets out during hard sets, and has turned into a leader of the group. Elliette Vorhoff participated in yet another meet and swam in some of the most challenging events her age group has to offer. At the beginning of the season Elliette told me she did not want to swim in a meet until the summer. She decided to swim in one meet, did great in it, and has swum in almost every meet since. It is always great to see a swimmer try something that he or she didn t plan on doing, have success, and then keep do it. Max Jacobson had another good meet and dropped even more time in some of his events. What has been very fun to watch with Max is how he is constantly learning and developing. He works on things like breathing every three strokes on freestyle and streamlining, and turns those things into habits. Breaking bad habits and developing good ones is a great trait to have for an improving swimmer. Lambert Boissiere put together a wonderful season. In previous seasons Lambert has come to practice and gone through the motions. This season we saw him working hard on sets every day and having a lot of fun doing it. He just missed qualifying for state in freestyle and backstroke this year. If Lambert keeps working like he has the past few months, there is no reason he will not be swimming at state in the near future.

12 Sophie Rabalais traveled up to Baton Rouge for the meet as well. This was Sophie s first season on the team and for a lot of kids that can be the toughest. We typically only get a chance to work with her on Saturday mornings; she swims at Newman the rest of the time. What I really enjoy about working with her is that she loves to race. Whether it is during a fast set at practice or in a swim meet, Sophie is willing to do whatever it takes to get her hand on the wall first. We expect big improvements from her during the next season. We had one swimmer from our group qualify for state, Karson Dumas. Karson swam best times on all of her individual events and helped out on relays as well. Her best swim was her 50 breast stroke where she dropped two seconds from her best time to qualify for the championship final. In the final, she dropped another second to finish in 5 th place. Going into the summer Karson already has a full lineup for the next state meet. We will have a fun time this summer deciding what events she will swim. Three of our swimmers participated in the 8 & under Championship meet this past weekend at Lakefront Arena. Eva Fischer, Grace Bergeron and Margo Thionville all swam fantastic. Margo has done a wonderful job this year on listening during practice and working hard to improve. What really impressed me this weekend was her 50 freestyle; she had one of the best flipturns we ve ever seen from an 8 year old and didn t breathe into or off the wall. Margo also swam at districts, which will help prepare her for when she ages up. For Grace and Eva this was the first time swimming at 8 & under champs. Both of them did a wonderful job racing in their individual events and on relays. Both girls have been wonderful to have in the group this season. Every coach who has worked with them has been able to notice how talented they are as swimmers, seeing them perform so well at a meet proves it. We hope that everyone enjoys our break during the next two weeks. We are excited to get back to the pool with everyone and have a great summer. Coach Brian and Coach Chris Tsunami- Sarah Gros I am very proud of all the Tsunamis who participated in their championship meet this past month. Every swimmer in the Tsunami group, who participated in the State Championship, scored points towards our team total. Not only did every swimmer place top 16 in an individual event and/or relay, we had numerous state champions.

Coach Sarah Pre National and National- Jacque Fessel Millican The group is already getting back in the water and it is exciting seeing so many swimmers at our practice each and every day. As they learn new dry land and drills they are getting to know themselves a little better as swimmers. Both Jake and I have already seen a lot of hard work and improvement from the swimmers in the short period of time we have been together. All of the technical work with their freestyle (first stroke we are focusing on) that we are putting in now is going to take some time. If we, coaches and swimmers, keep up the work we are seeing, and continue to work hard, great things will be happening in the near future. Needless to say, I can already see in these first few days that we are going to have a great season. I look forward to the group swimming fast and having fun!
