2 Court Shorts RTC April Social Our first Reno Tennis Club Social for 2018 was held on a chilly Sunday afternoon (April 29.) Despite the chill in the air we had 24+ in attendance. Everyone had a super time with tennis. Food and drinks were plentiful. After three rounds of tennis, everyone visited and chatted. Several people stayed afterwards to continue the fun day with fellow tennis lovers. Thanks to everyone who attended and a special thank you to our hosts: Sandra Rolfe, Vickie Creelman and Carol Tretten. We hope to see you at our next social on Saturday, July 21 at 11 AM for more tennis, food and socializing. 3 Reno Tennis Club T-Shirts Kudos and a special thank you shout out to Janet Roll for "hatching the plan" and carrying out the T-shirt deck fundraiser! Janet & Steve joined our club last year and Janet stepped right up and got something done. Makes us wish for some more who are willing to take over a project! So, thanks again, Janet for your work and for the $450 which as profit went into the deck fund. We love it that you are here and committed to helping our little club with the best courts in town. RTC No Frills Pizza June Social Sandra Rolfe and Carol Tretten hosted a very fun Pizza Social on June 14th at Washoe. We had 16 in attendance with lots of tennis, good music, good pizza, salad, drinks and dessert. We got to know several of our new members better and appreciate their membership and attendance. Thanks to everyone who attended. Most everyone stayed late and visited after the tennis; a fun time for all!! Our Compass Tournament is coming up August 18 & 19. Mark your calendars for a weekend full of tennis (4 matches).

5 USTA Leagues USTA (United States Tennis Association) League is the country s largest recreational tennis league, helping more than 900,000 participants nationwide get on the court, have a good time, and step up their game. USTA League is organized into teams by level and gender for team match play. Teams are made up of a minimum of five to eight players, depending on the league. You must be a USTA member to play in the USTA League, see for more information. Currently the Reno Tennis Club has the following active USTA teams: James William s Adult 55+ Men s 4.0 Team James William s Adult 18+ Mixed 8.0 Team Suzanne Hodnick s Adult 55+ Women s 8.0 Team Ryan Johnson s Adult 18+ Men s 4.5 Team won their playoff and has advanced to the district tournament in August. Tennis Rules and The Code When the professionals play tennis, the chair umpire and lines people officiate the match using the official rules of the International Tennis Federation (ITF), of which the United States Tennis Association (USTA) is a member. The ITF rules can be found here. The USTA has its own handbook. But when we play for fun or even competitively we don t have officials to help us. Therefore we should follow The Code to ensure that we are playing fairly.

7 Question: During my match, I did not pick up a ball on my side of the court because it was closer to the net and out of the way in my mind. During the following point, the ball landed on the ball left on the court. I was not able to reach the ball that was misdirected as a result of hitting the ball. Can I call a let? Answer: No, you may not call a let in this situation. Because you chose to leave the ball on the court, it became part of the court for that point and you accepted the risk of the ball in play bouncing off the stray ball. Per Rule 26, you are not entitled to a let for hindrance when the hindrance is something you caused. Question: During my doubles match, I served a ball that clearly was long. My partner and I made no attempt to play our opponent s return because I was anticipating a second serve. Our opponent claimed he won the point because he made a good return. We said that the serve was out, and it should be a second serve. Who was right? Answer: Your opponent was right in claiming the point. According to The Code rule 5, players makes all calls on shots landing on or aimed at their side of the net. Even if you thought the ball was out, you must continue play as your opponent may have given you the benefit of the doubt, as described in rule 6. Recycle your old tennis balls! And help build courts for kids. When you come to the courts look for the tennis ball recycling bin on the fence. By donating your used tennis balls, you will be helping the environment. The balls are crushed, the felt removed and then the balls are ground into a 99% pure tennis crumb rubber product used in many environmentally friendly products.
