1 HWTA Newsletter November 2017 President s Message Dear HWTA Ladies, If a doctor prescribes therapy, it is usually a treatment plan to cure or alleviate an illness or injury. How many of you took part in the HWTA Tennis Therapy? That s right, HWTA was serving up HWTA Tennis Therapy at HTC during the 16th Annual Roselyn Donnelly Memorial Tennis Tournament. The road to your happy place was paved with red wagons, clothes racks, a Lip Sense booth, raffle items, and plenty of deligh ul snacks. Happy smiles were everywhere because when you combine tennis with giving hearts and shopping, who wouldn t have a big smile. The red wagons were overflowing all weekend, and everyone was adding something to their tennis wardrobe thanks to all the generous dona ons. New shades for your lips was a big hit thanks to Thanh Boyer and your tennis sisters who were right there to help you make the right selec on. It s clear that HWTA Tennis Therapy is something we all need, so if you missed out this year be sure to save the date for October We ll Be Back! Have you ever thought how HWTA impacts and improves our lives? This year marked 50 years, and everyone had a chance to see how HWTA is progressing and embracing changes. HWTA keeps growing, we become wiser, more helpful to our tennis sisters and our community. HWTA is taking the path Here We Go! To make sure that path is successful we hope that you will consider renewing your HWTA membership each year, so remember to take ac on now to renew your HWTA membership for 2018 before December 31, Will you do that today? Most of you grew up knowing the expression Mother knows best but when it comes to the Annual Holiday Luncheon, which is also HWTA s biggest event a ended, I think we must go with Cindy Ga s knows best. Cindy is chairing this event again and her reputa on for making this party over the top is surely going to happen on Dec 5th, So, get your reserva on in mely (plus your membership renewal) to make sure you will have a spot to a end. A good gardener knows when it s the right me to plant bulbs and a chef knows how to add just the right ingredients to make that perfect dish. A long distance racer knows the pace to maintain to be the first to finish. But when it comes to determining who will become HWTA s 2017 recipients for the pres gious awards for Sportsmanship and Most Improved Player requires your vote. Check out the list and make sure to get your vote sent to Cindy Reaves. Social media is in a constant state of change and is a way to communicate within your circle or with the world if you choose, but the HWTA newsle er is all about sharing and connec ng with the HWTA ladies. What I know for sure is that if you don t read these newsle ers you are missing out on what HWTA is all about and can be. Kim McCandless President, HWTA

4 Meals On Wheels It is hard to imagine, but HWTA members have surpassed the generosity that they exhibited at the Spring Tournament. Our three li le red wagons were filled to overflowing by the end of the Fall Tournament weekend, to the point that, on Saturday, three of the boxes in the wagons had to be emp ed into bags, and those boxes were filled again by Sunday a ernoon! Every recipient of a Meals on Wheels visit one day last spring received a white bag with four different items. This me each Meals on Wheels recipient will receive a white bag with at least five different items. What a special extra small treat to accompany the meal that day. Thank you to everyone who donated items. You will bring a smile to the face of each Meals on Wheels recipient one day next week. Special thanks to Joanie Bell and Do e Robinson for lending their li le red wagons. Our li le three wagon train was a focal point all weekend. Karen Mitchell Thank You HWTA! Could you PLEASE spread the word...i wish to give a big THANK YOU to the Huntsville Women's Tennis Associa on members for being so though ul with their "special gi " bag l received today. It was greatly appreciated. You now hold a special place in my heart for being so though ul. If we all would travel the unknown road we would find more people in need. Again, thank you so much! From Tani Deaton s Aunt Liz (Elizabeth Chapman)
5 Meet Francesca Lee Have you seen this pre y smile on the tennis courts and wondered who she is and what her story is? Here are a few of the things that I discovered about her. Francesca has lived in Huntsville for more than 15 years, has a 10 year old son and a husband Mike, who is a long me tennis player. Her son, Paul, is involved in a junior tennis program. Francesca started playing tennis 5 years ago and is s ll learning (as we all are). Francesca joined HWTA because of the Wednesday League. Her quote was It is one of the best things I have done because I have met so many wonderful ladies When you see Francesca on the courts be sure and say hello. Send us your Bragging Rights HWTA would love to brag about our members being USTA local league champions and especially those winning at state, sec onals and na onals for the last five years (covering years 2012 to present date). All leagues can be submi ed - ladies doubles, combo, tri level and mixed. If you want to be included in the HWTA bragging rights the following informa on to: HWTAcontact@gmail.com 1. Team Name 2. USTA League and Year (example fall combo 40+) 3. List of Team Member Names 4. Photo ( if available) The bragging right submi als will be posted to the hwtanews.com website, HWTA Facebook page, and will be in future HWTA newsle ers when possible. HWTA needs to catch up on a few years where HWTA tennis sisters have earned bragging rights for "Winning On The Courts"! HWTA ladies are not just Champion Members they are also Champions on the Courts. So jump on this opportunity to help HWTA showcase our Champions and submit your bragging rights today! Mary Moseley, HWTA Website Lead Please pick up your 2017 Directory at HTC on the table in the lobby!
6 A very hear elt thank you to everyone, both ladies and gentlemen, who played in our Fall Tournament. It was a great win win! We had 97 players, including 25 who played in 2 events. The players enjoyed tennis, sunshine, good food and drinks that were donated by our HWTA ladies and Publix, our clothing sale headed up by Ann Creager and her team, and all the wonderful raffle prizes that were donated. The Li le Red Wagons, manned by Karen Mitchell, received lots of supplies and monetary dona ons for Meals on Wheels, our Charity for If you didn t get a chance to see it, we now have a beau ful hand painted canvas, painted by our very own talented Kimmie White, that we will use as a backdrop for our board for the Fall Tournaments. 9 Raffle and Tournament Food Gets Thumbs Up!!!! The fall HWTA tennis tournament comes right before everyone's busy holiday seasons get into full swing. But that does not stop our HWTA ladies from going all out with helping to supply treats, drinks, and raffle dona ons. Homemade cookies, Oreo Balls, sandwiches, fruit and assorted goodies supplied by Publix were just some of the items that were brought in by so many of the ladies. What a treat when Renata Limmer showed up with her famous toffee! Did you say you needed Raffle dona ons to support our charity "Meals on Wheels"? That's when our local tennis pros (Joc, Paul, Roland and Zachary) joined HWTA's cause and donated tennis lessons. Our local business also were key in contribu ng. Top spin provided gi cards, Nothing Bundt Cakes (Ayshea Patel) donated a cake, Equilibra (Athena Li le) donated a foot massage, and Beth Benefield secured gi cards from Fleet Feet and Outback. Special thanks go out to our HWTA ladies for the following dona ons: Tracey Bailey - donated an Expresso Coffee machine Cindy Younger - two tennis bags and tennis ball hopper with caps. Big kudos to Beth Benefield, she was a guardian angel who was always bringing out smiles in everyone and was HWTA's top Raffle sales woman! Who wouldn't buy a raffle cket from Beth?
