1 inside Calendar 2 Future of Turkey 2 Nutrition Tips 4 Leagues 6 Breakfast at Wimbledon 7 June The Pacific Beach Tennis Club Newsletter Court Resurfacing Complete If you ve been to the club over the last month, you ve probably noticed some big changes underfoot with the unveiling of our new court surfaces. The gorgeous blue and green color scheme brings PBTC into line with the pallete de riguer these days and offers optimal visibility for those really tough line calls. These are some courts we can really be proud of, so it s a good time to remember that it is up to all of us members to keep our club looking great through the years to come. Please keep the following rules and commonsense guidelines in mind: * No black-soled shoes * Avoid using chewing gum during play * No pets on the grounds * No glass bottles on the courts Now let s get out and have fun! PBTC Grand Ave /
2 2 CALENDAR Friday Night Drop-In Mixers 6/8, 6/15, 6/29 6:30 p.m. It s an evening of relaxed drop-in tennis. We ll pair you up with partners and mix things up as folks come and go. During the tournament, all courts will be reserved. Contact: Steve Adamson (steve@pbtennis.com) The Future Of Turkey It may seem too early to be thinking of gravy, but the PBTC Board has got the Turkey Tournament on its mind. We d like to collect feedback to make sure we re continuing to serve our members well with the way the tourney is formatted and run. So what do you think? Is the tourney good as-is, does it need improvement and should we even continue with the tradition in the first place? If you want to help answer those questions, please consider joining our Turkey Tournament Committee. Contact Events Chair Dan Taillac (dtaillac@yahoo.com, 858/ ) for more info. The Role Of Tournaments At PBTC It may seem like a pain when the club courts are tied up for tournaments or court rentals on select weekends, but these events are key to the club s fiscal success. Over the past several years, PBTC has cultivated a healthy roster of popular USTA adult and juniors tournaments that draw entrants from around the district. In addition to bringing visibility to our club for future membership recruitment, these events are respectable money-makers for the club. After paying the tournament director, profits go into our coffers to offset the differential between what we make from membership dues and what it costs to run the club. The long and short of it? Tournaments and court rentals keep all of our membership dues affordable. To avoid being turned away at the gate, keep your eyes peeled for notices about upcoming events. We ll do our best to update the PBTC website and Facebook page as events are scheduled.
3 In Memory Of Boz Bob was and always will be a close playing partner in spirit. To me I ll remember him as a private man with always a positive aura about him that let him stay positive through his challenging crisis. Those of us close to Bob, tenniswise, were all amazed at his endurance through his bout with cancer. He would seem to right himself after each session to continue to endure and play well. For his age and circumstance his serve was exceptional. The trait that always stood out to me whether a partner or opponent was his after play remarks: Wilf you re the best on the court today or Ray, you were the best on the court today. Longtime member Bob Bozynski passed earlier this year. His PBTC friends keep him in their thoughts. He never took credit for lauding his own ability to do well even though it was evident. Bob took pride in his personal surroundings maintaining a beautifully decorated household overlooking PB to the south and west with an unobstructed view as far as a non cloudy day would allow. He was gracious as a host with detail to comfort both Left: Boz with friend Bob Dunham Inset: Boz was a lively entertainer. setting and cuisine. Bob is not gone but on a tennis trip to be with others of his ilk. My sincere wish to you for a peaceful rest now. --HOWARD SEALEY UPCOMING EVENTS Breakfast At Wimbledon Viewing Party and Tourney 7/7 & 7/8 7 a.m. Come watch the Wimbledon finals at the clubhouse and play tennis, too! (Max 6 students, players) Women s Advanced Tuesdays, 5-6:30 p.m. Workout for 5.0+ players (Max 5 students) By: Page Love, MS, RD 1. Drink, Drink, Drink! Drink at least 80 oz. of hydrating fluids per day. Drink before you get thirsty. Replace a liter/hour during play. Sports beverages or water are best on the court. Fruit juices and sodas should be avoided on the court because of the high sugar concentration. Try to drink before you get thirsty! 2. Do not starve the muscles of fuel! Eating at least 8-10 servings per day from complex carbohydrate choices will create the base to maintain your muscle glycogen levels. Choose higher fiber options whenever possible. Seven a day from fruits and vegetables will meet extra carbohydrate, mineral, and additional fluid needs from food. Choose a wide variety of colors and types of fruits and vegetables daily - something citrus, something deep green, and at least one other red, yellow, or orange choice. Divide these foods into 5-6 small meals. 3. Eat breakfast everyday! After a ten to twelve hour overnight fast your muscle energy levels are low. It is unfair to expect yourself to perform at a peak without refueling with carbohydrate sources. Many traditional breakfast choices are appropriate choices, i.e. low sugar breakfast cereal, two slices of toast, glass of juice; or, pancakes or waffles, small amount of syrup, fresh fruit, 8 oz. of skim milk. Even if you have not been eating breakfast, try eating a bagel and juice in your car on the way to the court. Starting to eat something again will help to rejuvenate you hunger levels in the morning. 4. Provide the building blocks of muscle tissue everyday! Complete protein sources like turkey, chicken, tuna, tenderloin, and fresh lean deli meats are needed at at least 4-6 oz. amounts during the day. Choose alternative protein options to meet additional protein needs such as low fat milk, cheese, and cottage cheese, light peanut butter, beans, or tofu at smaller meals to aid in satiety and fullness. 8 BACKCOURT Notes From The PBTC Board Talk tennis with fellow members, share pictures of league teammates and keep up with all the latest news and events by liking the PBTC Facebook page! Please help us keep our membership strong by reminding guests to pay their court fees. When guests skate on the check it disincentivizes others from joining. Special thanks go out to City Council Member Kevin Falcouner for providing the extra funds to make our court resurfacing a reality. Thanks also go to Past President Amy Andres for shepherding the project past here tenure as a board member. Now that the courts are finished, next up are projects to get court naming plaques, bench plaques and engraved bricks installed. We re also in talks to get a gate installed with a combination lock. The board is aware of cleanliness issues with the bathrooms. We re looking for a new cleaning vendor.
