All rooms have been renovated and all facilities have been brought to newest standards. The Resort has received several awards in the past two years. The Resort offers many on-site activities: Nine tennis courts (five lighted for night play), Two swimming pools with Jacuzzi, Fitness Center, The Grill, The Bar, Starbucks Espresso Café, shuttle to/from downtown Palm Springs, A lighted 18-hole championship putting course, Sand Volleyball, and Classic Croquet. SMTC members have in the past enjoyed great tennis at the resort. We plan on playing organized tennis all day Saturday and Sunday morning. Dinner and trophy ceremony is planned for Saturday night. The trip coincides with the Pacific Life Open Tennis Tournament starting March 08-21, 2004 at the Tennis Garden in Indian Wells. There will be sufficient time to attend some of the earlier rounds of the tournament with ticket prices starting at $15.00, lots of special events going on that weekend. Please call me or go to the tournament website for more information. So, please sign up as soon as possible, as limited number of rooms will be available. $ per person includes: 1. Two nights hotel (double occupancy - If you need a roommate we will try to get one for you) 2. All organized tennis, trophies, balls 3. Saturday evening happy hour 4. Court 1 is the Challenge Court. March 19th, 7-10 PM Come and meet some new players, bring a friend (doesn t have to be a SMTC member, yet) and socialize. Friday March 19th from 7-10 PM. at Reed Park. 3 NOTES FROM THE LADDER DIRECTOR March 2004 Every ladder is shorter this time. We had to remove those players who haven t renewed for If Andy Roddick doesn t pay his ATP dues, he doesn t play on the tour. After all the cuts on the open singles ladder, Peter Shustari is the new number one. This is something like the Speaker of the House becoming President, but don t sell him short. Since joining the ladder almost three years ago, Peter has never lost to anyone presently on the ladder. The shortening of the ladders increases your chances to climb to glory. Give it a shot! Membership cards are coming (Yes, you ll need them.) After resisting the idea for years, the club is issuing membership cards. You should receive them with the club directories in March. We have to do this because of non-members who have crashed the party at open play. Bring your card to open play and tournaments. No excuses! If you left your card in your car, go get it! Better still, keep your card in your tennis bag so you ll always have it when you play. And don t be shy about asking someone to show his or her card. Your dues pay for the courts; don t let others freeload. We ll forward them to the pro; then, pick up your next newsletter to find the answer. Q. Why are all tennis balls fuzzy? The yellow fuzz gets all over my nice tennis whites. Can t they make the balls fuzz-less? - Distraught in Santa Monica First, may I commend you on your unique name? I ve never before met someone named Distraught. But forgive me for straying from the fuzzy issue at hand. Your question, Distraught, displays a disappointing lack of knowledge of the finer points of tennis. Haven t you heard a player yell out - as you yourself may have from time to time - the score as fifteen love or thirty love? Why all this emphasis on love, even while reporting the score? Because tennis is, finally, a game about warm and fuzzy love. And that s why the balls are warm and fuzzy. -The Pro 3
