3 WTA WORLD NO.1 RANKING UPDATE: There are now three players with a chance to hold the No.1 ranking after the US Open. Garbiñe Muguruza has advanced to R16 and is in best position of becoming No. 1 after US Open. Next Match: R16 vs. Kvitova Elina Svitolina needs to reach the SF in order to have a chance of moving to No.1. If Muguruza reaches the QF then Svitolina would need to reach the final in order to have a shot at No.1. Next Match: R16, vs. Keys Karolina Pliskova needs to reach the final in order to extend her stay atop the WTA Rankings; or if Muguruza advances to the semifinals, then Pliskova would need to win the title. Pliskova would no longer have a chance at moving to No.1 if Muguruza advances to the final. Next Match: R16, vs. Brady WTA RANKING WATCH With Garbiñe Muguruza through to the R16 at the US Open, the chase for No.1 is down to three Muguruza, Karolina Pliskova and Elina Svitolina. Svitolina needs to reach the semifinals in order to have a chance, while Pliskova will need to reach the final. If Muguruza reaches the QF (R16 vs. Kvitova) then Svitolina would need to reach the final in order to overtake Muguruza. Should both Svitolina and Pliskova lose on Monday, Muguruza will be the new WTA World No.1 after the US Open (beginning the week of September 11, 2017). It is possible for both Muguruza (as runner-up) and Pliskova (w/title) to have the same ranking points total. In this case, as Muguruza would hold the tie-breaker and therefore be No.1. The tie-breaker is points earned at Grand Slams, WTA Finals, Premier Mandatory events and Premier 5s.

4 Venus Williams could return to the Top 5 for the first time since January 2011 if she advances to the semifinals. Williams could finish as high as No.2 if she wins the title and other results go in her favor. As a result of her opening round loss, Angelique Kerber will drop out of the Top 10 on Monday after the US Open. There are five players vying for a Top 10 spot: Kvitova would need to reach SF to have a chance of returning to the Top 10 CoCo Vandeweghe, Anastasija Sevastova, and Madison Keys would need to win the title and have favorable results among the rest of the draw to move to the Top 10 If none of the scenarios above transpire, then Jelena Ostapenko will make her Top 10 debut
