PENN STATE AND PCAP FORM PARTNERSHIP TO FIGHT CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE Penn State has formed a partnership with the Pennsylvania Coalition Against Rape (PCAP) and the National Sexual Violence Resource Center to extend the collective reach of their programs in preventing and treating sexual abuse and violence throughout the state and nation. The University has committed $1.5 million to fund a variety of initiatives the partnership will undertake. The funds will come from Penn State s share of this year s Big Ten bowl revenues. As a University and as people within a caring community we believe it is essential to take a deeper look at the core issue of child sexual abuse and to openly acknowledge the scope of the problem, said University President Rodney Erickson. Our own experience shows that child sexual abuse greatly impacts individuals and entire communities. It is now our responsibility to assist in raising awareness and in helping fight this insidious and often secret crime. We hope that our partnership will help break the silence that surrounds child sexual abuse and lead to better PENN STATE ATHLETIC COMMUNICATIONS: Associate AD, Business Relations & Communications: Greg Myford Assistant AD for Communications: Jeff Nelson Dir. of Comm. & Branding For FB: Guido D Elia FOOTBALL CONTACTS Jeff Nelson: jtn4@psu.edu Brian Siegrist: tbs1@psu.edu John Regenfuss: Guido D Elia: gnd3@psu.edu Office Phone: protection of our children. Erickson said there are many ways that PCAR and Penn State can combine resources and expertise to effectively combat one of society s most devastating crimes. According to national statistics, in the United States alone, one in four girls and one in six boys are sexually abused before their 18th birthdays. We believe PCAR s goals closely parallel the University s goals in education, research and outreach, and in the broader area of public policy development, Erickson said. We can and will do more to stop and prevent abuse. The Pennsylvania Coalition Against Rape, based in Enola, Pa., is a nationally recognized leader in the field of sexual assault response and prevention. PCAR s staff and the NSVRC work closely and collaborate with many external partners to identify the best expertise and resources to address and prevent sexual violence against children and adults. PENN STATE TO CREATE CENTER FOR THE PROTECTION OF CHILDREN Penn State s share of football bowl game revenues not only will be used for a newly formed partnership with an advocacy group for victims of sexual violence, but now also will help launch a center for the study, research, prevention and treatment of child abuse. Penn State officials are establishing the Center for the Protection of Children, which will eventually be home to hundreds of child abuse experts from across Penn State. We are opting to put our expertise and research power to work confronting the problem of abuse, said Penn State President Rodney Erickson. We want to be known as a University that is doing the right thing and we have committed ourselves to being the national leader on the prevention and treatment of child abuse, so that we will have a meaningful role in fighting this horrific crime. Erickson previously announced Penn State s partnership with the Pennsylvania Coalition Against Rape and the National Sexual Violence Resource Center with a University commitment of $1.5 million. The partnership will extend the collective reach of programs offered by these two agencies. Funding is coming from Penn State s share of this year s Big Ten bowl revenues and any remaining money from those bowl games -- generally estimated to be in the area of $500,000 to $800, will now go toward the new Penn State Hershey Center for the Protection of Children. PENN STATE FANS WEAR BLUE; RAISE FUNDS FOR CHARITABLE ORGANIZATIONS Penn State students and fans demonstated their support for the victims of child abuse and raised awareness and funds for the cause by wearing blue at the Nov. 12 Nebraska game in Beaver Stadium. Boise State TCU LSU USC Virginia Tech Texas West Virginia Florida Wisconsin Oregon Oklahoma PENN STATE QUARTET OF NITTANY LIONS FROM TEXAS Four Nittany Lions hail from Texas: freshman OL Kevin Blanchard (Katy/Katy), sophomore placekicker/ punter Anthony Fera (Cypress/St. Pius X), sophomore guard Frank Figueroa (San Antonio/Thomas Edison) and senior cornerback D Anton Lynn (Celina/Celina). Fera and Cougar WR Gino Collins were teammates at St. Pius X in Houston. Fera was selected the second-team All-Big Ten placekicker and first-team punter by ESPN.com. Lynn was honorable-mention all-conference. ALRIGHT WHEN IT S TIGHT Penn State is 7-1 in games decided by 10 points or less this year, its most wins in such games since going 7-0 during the 1985 season. The Nittany Lions first Big Ten games were decided by 10 points or less. Only one Big Ten team has had eight conference games determined by 10 points or less (Illinois in 1992). Penn State has not had a season with eight wins decided by 10 points or less in its 124 previous campaigns. The Nittany Lions were the first team in the Big Ten s 116-year history to win five consecutive conference games by 10 points or less. BIG TEN RECORD 10 BOWL TEAMS For the first time in Big Ten history, 10 conference teams were selected to participate in postseason bowl games, with two squads taking part in Bowl Championship Series (BCS) games. It marks the 10th time in 14 seasons that two conference teams will play in BCS contests. FINAL GAME FOR 23 SENIORS Twenty-three Penn State seniors will be playing their final game on January 2. Over the past four years, the group has been instrumental in helping the Nittany Lions win the 2008 Big Ten Championship and Rose Bowl berth, win the 2010 Capital One Bowl, earn a spot in the 2011 Outback Bowl and their fourth January bowl game with the TicketCity Bowl match-up vs. Houston. The seniors have helped the Nittany Lions earn a record since the start of the 2008 season, among the best marks in nation. Among the 23 seniors are 14 players who havebeen starters for most of the season (seven on offense, seven on defense). The 2011 seniors are: Saf Drew Astorino; T Quinn Barham; TB Brandon Beachum; DE Jack Crawford; WR Andrew Goodman; TB Stephfon Green; DE Eric Latimore; PK Evan Lewis; CB D Anton Lynn; TE J.D.Mason; WR Derek Moye; T Chima Okoli; G DeOn tae Pannell; LB ken Pollock; CB Chaz Powell; KS Jon Rohrbaugh; R Ryan Scherer; DT Devon Still; LB Nate Stupar; RB Joe Suhey; Saf Nick Sukay; TE Andrew Szczerba and G Johnnie Troutman. STILL NAMED BIG TEN DEFENSIVE LINEMAN & DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR Penn State senior defensive tackle Devon Still earned two major additions to his abundant list of accolades with his selection as the Big Ten Nagurski- Woodson Defensive Player of the Year and Smith- Brown Defensive Lineman of the Year. Still is the fifth Nittany Lion to be selected Big Ten Defensive Player of Year since The honor is named for former conference standouts Bronko Nagurski and Charles Woodson. Still and former teammate Jared Odrick (2009) are the only defensive tackles who have earned Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year since Still joins an elite group of former Nittany Lions, all of whom were first-team All-Americans, to earn Big Ten Defensive Player of Year: linebacker LaVar Arrington (1998), defensive end Courtney Brown (1999), defensive end Michael Haynes (2002) and defensive tackle Jared Odrick (2009). Since 1994, Still and Odrick are the only defensive tackles who have earned Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year. Since the Nittany Lions began Big Ten competition in 1993, Penn State and Ohio State lead all teams with five players selected for the conference s top defensive honor. Still received the lineman honor from award namesake Courtney Brown, a first-team Penn State All- America defensive end in 1999, at the Big Ten Football Awards Gala Dec. 2 in Indianapolis. STILL A FINALIST FOR BEDNARIK AWARD, OUTLAND TROPHY & NAGURSKI TROPHY Penn State standout senior DT Devon Still was a finalist for three of the nation s most prestigious honors -- the Chuck Bednarik Award, the Outland Trophy and the Bronko Nagurski Trophy. The Maxwell Football Club annually presents the Bednarik Award to the nation s defensive player of the year. The Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) and the Charlotte Touchdown Club have awarded the Bronko Nagurski Trophy annually since The FWAA awards the Outland Trophy annually to the nation s premier interior lineman. The Chuck Bednarik Award was established in 1995 and is presented in honor of linebacking great Chuck Bednarik, a member of both the College Football and Pro Football Halls of Fame. Penn State football student-athletes have won the Chuck Bednarik Award four times, more than any school in the nation: LaVar Arrington in 1999, Paul Posluszny in 2005 and 2006, and Dan Connor in Aaron Maybin was a Bednarik finalist in The Outland Trophy, presented annually since 1946, is the third oldest award in major college football. Mike Reid, a Penn State All-American and College Football Hall of Fame inductee, captured the Outland Trophy in The award named after the late John Outland, an All-America lineman at Penn and Kansas. Still joined former Penn State All-Americans LaVar Arrington (1999), Courtney Brown (1999) and Tamba Hali (2005) as finalists for the Nagurski Trophy. Devon s played great football, said interim head coach Tom Bradley. The thing that s probably overlooked is the responsibility that he s taken on this football team with his leadership. I ve leaned on him. He s done an excellent job just being a good, solid teammate to everybody. He s spent an awful lot of time in that locker room, hanging around the guys trying to express what he thinks, as a team, we need to do to get to the next level. GAME NOTES PENN STATE FOOTBALL STUDENT-ATHLETES TIED FOR TOP GRADUATION RATE AMONG BCS/AP TOP 25 TEAMS The Penn State football team is tied with Stanford for the top Graduation Success Rate (GSR) among teams ranked in the Nov. 20 Bowl Championship Series and AP Top 25 rankings, according to data recently released by the NCAA. Penn State football studentathletes that enrolled in the University from earned a superlative Graduation Success Rate of 87 percent, tied with Stanford for No. 10 overall among the nation s 120 Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) institutions. Penn State s 87 percent GSR was significantly higher than the 67 percent FBS average and was second to Northwestern (94) among Big Ten institutions. Penn State football student-athletes that enrolled in the University from earned a strong fouryear federal graduation rate of 80 percent, also No. 2 to Northwestern (86) among Big Ten squads. The Nittany Lions 80 percent graduation figure was 24 points above the 56 percent FBS average, according to the NCAA. In the NCAA s 2009 graduation data, the Nittany Lions earned the highest GSR and federal graduation rate among teams ranked in the final Associated Press Top 25 poll two years ago. The GSR is the NCAA s more inclusive calculation of student-athlete academic success. The NCAA rate is more accurate than the federally mandated methodology because it includes incoming transfers and students enrolling in the spring semester who receive athletic aid and graduate, and deletes from the calculation student-athletes who leave an institution and were academically eligible to compete. The strong NCAA graduation rate data is the latest success in a long line of academic achievement for members of the Penn State football program, who consistently are near the top nationally in academic success: - Penn State has had 15 CoSIDA Academic All-Americans the past six years to lead the nation, with 13 first-team selections. - Penn State s all-time total of 49 Academic All-America football players is third among all FBS institutions. - Forty Penn State football student-athletes earned a 3.00 GPA or higher during the 2010 fall semester, including 16 who earned Dean s List recognition by posting a 3.5 GPA or higher. 6
