10 hermann / retired numbers MAC-hermann trophy finalists Jeff Rowland 25 MAC-Hermann Trophy Finalist Lobo forward Jeff Rowland had a storybook career in his four years at UNM. He went from an non-recruited walkon, to setting the school record for points in a season (45) as a junior, to becoming the first Lobo considered for the MAC - Hermann Trophy. After scoring 16 goals and four assists in 25, he was one of three finalists for college soccer s top award, along with Indiana s Brian Plotkin and eventual winner, Jason Garey of Maryland. Andrew Boyens 26 MAC-Hermann Trophy Semi-Finalist Andrew Boyens came to UNM in 24 as a wirey defender from New Zealand, looking to make a name for himself in college soccer. Over the next two years, he became one of the top defenders in the country and helped put Lobo soccer on the national map. He was a two-time All-American and, in 26, was one of the 15 semifinalists for the MAC-Hermann Trophy. Boyens was selected with the 1th overall pick in the 27 MLS SuperDraft by Toronto FC, the highest any Lobo has ever been drafted. 8 David Robertson Midfield retired number Only one jersey number in the 26-year history of the New Mexico soccer program has ever been retired. David Robertson s number 8 will never be worn again. Robertson, who played from 1984 to 1986, was UNM s all-time leading scorer until 1994 when his records of 3 goals and 88 points were surpassed by Mike Strati. Robertson is currently fourth in career points (88), goals scored (34) and assists (2) on UNM s all-time list.

Fans were scrambling for tickets only to discover the game was sold out days in advance. They were trying to find a seat in packed sports bars throughout town to watch their team on the big screen, but every establishment with a television was filled to capacity. This was a new occurrence for the Duke city, however, this wasn t happening for football or basketball. This time it was the University of New Mexico men s soccer team that had captured the hearts and minds of Lobo fans. Led by a group of local players, the Lobo soccer team was in the middle of one of the greatest postseason runs in school history. Fans packed the UNM soccer Complex for three thrilling overtime wins on the way to the first appearance in the College Cup. New Mexico advanced to the national championship game, and despite falling to Maryland in the finals, had one of the most exciting seasons Lobo fans had ever seen. With a trip to the College Cup on the line, the buzz around town was centered on the soccer team. The game sold out more than a day in advance as 5,6 fans packed into the UNM Soccer Complex. Another estimated 1, fans watched the game from outside the stadium in the parking lot. This game also went into overtime and again it was the magic provided by senior Jeff Rowland that saved the day. Senior Ben Ashwill sent in a cross in the 94 th minute that Rowland put home for the win. Fans stormed the field and joined in the celebration as the Lobos headed to the College Cup in Cary, N.C. The Lobos went on to defeat Clemson 2-1 in the College Cup semifinals before falling to No. 1 Maryland 1- in the finals. Despite not bringing home a national title, New Mexico still had one of the greatest seasons in Lobo athletics history. Rowland earned consensus All-American honors for the second time and was a finalist for the Hermann Trophy. Senior Lance Watson and junior Andrew Boyens also received All-American recognition.
