With a sweep this weekend, UAlbany, at 3-2 in-conference and 3-15 overall, could move into fi rst place in the America East. UMass Lowell is winless going into the weekend at 0-5 in the league and 0-17 overall, while New Hampshire currently is in fi rst place with a 4-1 league and overall record. This is the fi rst meeting between UAlbany and UMass Lowell since Last season, the Great Danes defeated the Wildcats in all three meetings. GREAT DANES PICKED #1 IN AE PRESEASON POLL The 2012 America East regular season champion Great Danes were predicted to fi nish fi rst in the conference in the preseason poll. UAlbany received three fi rst-place votes and got 37 points in the preseason poll. 2 LAST WEEKEND: UALBANY SPLITS AGAINST AE FOES In a pair of exciting home matches, UAlbany split during the weekend, falling just short in a comeback attempt to UMBC in fi ve, then defeating then-fi rst place Stony Brook in four sets on Sunday. Samantha Brostrom earned a pair of double doubles over the weekend, fi nishing with 36 kills and 34 digs. Amanda Dolan hit.290 with 25 kills and just fi ve errors, while Mikala McCauley racked up 100 assists, 28 digs and eight service aces. DOLAN - AMERICA EAST ROOKIE OF THE WEEK The team s leader in many categories including kills, hit % and blocks, Amanda Dolan was honored as the America East Rookie of the Week for her performance against UMBC and Stony Brook. She hit.290 with 25 kills in the middle, committing just fi ve attack errors. FRESHMEN LEADING THE WAY The team s freshmen have been earning the bulk of the production this season with fi ve newcomers being among the seven UAlbany players with 37+ kills. Amanda Dolan has the top s team hit % at.248, total blocks with 48 and kills with 122. Freshmen make up 62% of the team s kills, with fi ve of the seven top players with kills being freshmen, including Olivia Schonewise with IN REVIEW After a tough start to the season going 3-10, UAlbany won its fi rst seven matches in conference play and concluded with a 10-2 America East slate to win its fi fth consecutive regular season title. Hosting the America East Tournament, the Great Danes swept New Hampshire to reach the conference title match, but fell to Binghamton in the championship to fi nish at on the year. Sara Pope was named the America East Player of the Year, leading the team with 348 kills. With a league-best 560 digs, Viktoriia Stroilo earned America Defensive Player of the Year, adding 25 aces. Along with Pope, Gabby Whitworth got on the all-conference First Team with 588 assists, 93 kills and 131 digs. MY BROSTROM S BACK After missing the start of the season due to injury, Samantha Brostrom has earned four double doubles in her fi rst 13 matches played this season. She is second on the team with 1.98 kills per set, tallying 85 kills, 114 digs and 10 service aces since her return. NEWCOMERS EARNING AWARDS UAlbany has placed two rookies on a total of three All-Tournament Teams. Amanda Dolan earned a spot on the LA Westside and the Carolina Classic All-Tournament Teams, while Mikala McCauley was honored on the Penn State Classic All-Tournament Team. The River Hawks are led by junior middle hitter Anisa Smith, who is hitting.165 with 97 kills and 42 blocks. The second option is junior outside hitter Ella Merrill, who has 81 kills and 94 digs. New Hampshire comes into the weekend on a three-match winning streak to put its conference record at 4-1, standing overall. The team s leading attacker, sophomore outside hitter Tori Forrest, has earned 208 kills and 15 aces. Senior right side hitter Destiny Tolliver is hitting.224 with 127 kills and 75 total blocks. LAST TIME THEY PLAYED: UAlbany and UMass Lowell have not faced each other in a DI match, last playing in 1998 in Lowell, with the River Hawks getting a 3-1 victory. UAlbany and UNH last met in the 2012 America East Tournament Semifi nals. After a close fi rst set, the Great Danes dominated the next two games to sweep the Wildcats at the University Gym. Dunja Prgomet led UAlbany with 16 kills and 11 digs. GLOBETROTTING TEAM... The Great Danes will be well represented this season, bringing in players from six different countries from three different continents: the United States, Canada, France, St. Lucia, Ukraine and New Zealand. Two players, Amy Hunter and Tyna William, play for the New Zealand and St. Lucia National Team respectively, while Maxence Dardelet is a former member of the France U-21 French Cup winning team....and ALL AROUND THE COUNTRY The team s eight players from the USA hail from six different states, with California having two representatives, Sofi a Furlong from San Juan Capistrano and Tatum Jungsten from Loomis, as well as Illinois have two players, Amanda Dolan and Lauren Spreen. Just one player, Mikala McCauley from Stanfordville, represents the home state of New York. The other states represented by UAlbany include Maryland, Nebraska and Ohio. LAURIE GONZALEZ JOINS TEAM PUERTO RICO Former UAlbany standout libero Laurie Gonzalez has joined the Puerto Rican National Team for the NORCECA Championships in Nebraska. Gonzalez, a professional player for the Valencian Juncos in Puerto Rico, is the only player in UAlbany history to earn over 2,000 digs in her career. She is a three-time America East Defensive Player of the Year, holds the single season school record with 583 digs in 2010 and helped the Great Danes to three America East titles in her career. Her fi rst tournament, Puerto Rico won Pool C and fi nished in fourth place in the NORCECA Championship in Omaha.

4 ENGSTROM APPROACHING TOP DI MARK AT UALBANY At the helm of UAlbany, MJ Engstrom has amassed 105 victories, winning the America East regular season all fi ve seasons and taking the title three times. She has been named the America East Coach of the Year in 2009 and Going into the season she has the best winning percentage in D-I play at UAlbany at.667 and is just 39 matches away from tying Kelly Sheffi eld for most DI wins at the school. In her coaching career she has taken three different schools, UAlbany, Nicholls State and Villanova, to the NCAA Tournament. BROOKE STANLEY JOINS UALBANY COACHING STAFF Former America East Player of the Year and UAlbany has rejoined the Purple and Gold as an assistant coach for the 2013 season. After graduating from UAlbany in 2011, Stanley coached Henderson High in North Carolina to a state championship and 22-5 record, earning regional Coach of the Year honors. She ranks second all-time in UAlbany history with 4,851 assists and seventh in digs with 1,111. She joins Rich Zwolinski, who returns for his third season as an assistant coach under Engstrom. ALISSA GIBBS INDUCTED IN UALBANY HALL OF FAME One of the top players around the turn of the century, Alissa Gibbs will be inducted into the University at Albany Athletic Hall of Fame this fall. She currently ranks third all-time in UAlbany volleyball history with 1,376 kills. She also stands fi fth all-time with 166 service aces, sixth with 3.72 kills per set and 10th with 992 digs. A two-time All-conference player, Gibbs was the America East Scholar-Athlete of the Year and received the ECAC Merit Medal for being UAlbany s top female studentathlete in HEAD COACH MJ ENGSTROM MJ Engstrom enters her sixth season as head volleyball coach at the University at Albany in Engstrom has posted an overall record of and 53-5 in America East play over her fi rst fi ve seasons. Her record includes three America East titles and as many NCAA appearances as a head coach. She previously coached Villanova and Nicholls State to NCAA tournament berths as well. The Great Danes won the regular season America East title for the fi fth straight year in Sara Pope was named America East Player of the Year as a sophomore under Engstrom while Viktoriia Stroilo was also named America East Defensive Specialist of the Year, marking the second consective year Engstrom had two players win major America East awards. Tatum Jungsten was also named to the America East All-Rookie team in Engstrom, a native of St. Paul, Minn., is on the editorial board for the International Journal for Volleyball Research and is a member of the USA Volleyball Sports Medicine and Performance Commission.
