Armes set a career-high with 11 kills in a four-set win over Morehead State. She then equaled that total in a sweep of Missouri. But, the freshman has proven to be more than just an offensive threat when she tallied 12 digs in a loss to St. John s. During that week she also recorded five aces and four blocks. KENTUCKY CONTINUES STREAK OVER MOREHEAD STATE Despite falling in the second set, the Kentucky volleyball team claimed a 3-1 victory over Morehead State. Coming into the match, the Wildcats had not lost to Morehead State since The two teams were playing in the 30th match of the series, and the pesky Eagles gave everything they had for the Blue and White. The senior leadership of Queen Nzenwa and a break-out performance by freshman Ann Armes erased any upset as the Wildcats handedly won the first and final sets to stave off the instate visitors. Four Wildcats reached double-figure kill efforts including Nzenwa with 13 and Armes with a career-best 11. FIVE-SET THRILLER Trailing in the fifth and deciding set, Kentucky sophomores Blaire Hiler and Sarah Mendoza combined for five kills to help overcome a tenacious Pittsburgh squad and claim the first victory of the season by a 3-2 margin.with the Wildcats behind by three, senior Queen Nzenwa took a pass from junior Sarah Rumely and put down a hammer to begin the rally for the home squad. Pittsburgh followed with a kill of its own to take a two-point edge with the match point on the line. Mendoza came through with back-to-back match-point savers to make the score in favor of the visitors. The third Mendoza kill of the late rally knotted the score at 15 a piece. The two teams would then trade points until Kentucky took hold of a advantage. Sophomore Laura Stokowski began the serve which Pittsburgh returned into the waiting arms of an Nzenwa and Mendoza rejection to cap off the thrilling come-from-behind win. UPSET-MINDED CATS As a program on the rise, Kentucky has wasted no time in knocking off some of the nation s top teams in the past three seasons. Heading into the 2006 campaign, the Wildcats had not beaten a top-25 foe in their previous 66 attempts. In 2006, the Wildcats broke that streak by winning a five-game thriller against No. 18 Tennessee in Memorial Coliseum. Kentucky then toppled No. 20 Ohio, 3-2, in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament at West Lafayette, Ind. UK s 3-2 win at home against No. 18 LSU marked the program s third upset against a higher-ranked team in the past two years. Kentucky got their first shot of the 2008 season when they welcomed #13 Wisconsin to Memorial Coliseum. In a game that was not indicative of its score, the Wildcats fell 3-0. Last season, the Wildcats were one of only two Southeastern Conference schools to average 1,000 or more fans per match for the second straight season. In 2007, UK twice drew crowds over 1,000 fans. The Wildcats set the sixth-highest attendance record with 2,350 fans against Mississippi State in mid-september. The Blue and White then had 1,572 fans attend the Sept. 28th win over Arkansas. In 2006, the Wildcats drew 3,150 fans in a near-upset of nationally ranked Florida, marking the fifth-largest crowd in school history. That combined, Kentucky has recorded three of the top 10 crowds in school history over the past two seasons.

7 CRAIG SKINNER Year: Fourth Record: SEC Record: NCAA Appearances: 3 The Skinner Effect Three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances for the first time in school history. The school s first 20-win season since 1993 and an improvement in wins in each of his three seasons. Three consecutive 17-win seasons for the first time since and back-to-back 19-win seasons for the first time since the seasons. The team s most road victories in 2007 (9) since the 1993 campaign. The school s first NCAA tournament victory since Three upsets of top-25 foes. Prior to Skinner s arrival, the Wildcats hadn t won a match against a top-25 team in their previous 66 attempts dating back to the 1993 season. Three top-26 recruiting classes, including the nation s eighth ranked class in Nine All-SEC selections, including the 2006 SEC Freshman of the Year and the 2005 SEC Defensive Player of the Year. Also mentored the school s first SEC First Team selection in 2007 since the 2003 campaign. Seven SEC Freshman of the Week selections in the past two years. Eighteen Academic All-SEC selections. Two AVCA Second-Team Academic All-District selections. The second-best attendance in the SEC in three straight seasons, including averaging 1,000 fans per match in both the 2006 and 2007 seasons. The school s first AVCA All-Region member (Nicole Britenriker - Honorable Mention ) since Queen Nzenwa was a first-team member in The 2005 SEC Coach of the Year. UK s first All-America honorable mention selection, Queen Nzenwa, since Kentucky head volleyball coach Craig Skinner thought he was destined to be a numbers person. A 1993 graduate of Ball State with a degree in accounting, Skinner always had proficiency for figures taking the most out of what he had and profiting from it. And while Skinner realized at a young age that his calling was to work with and mentor young student-athletes, his teams have posted plenty of numbers to back up the success that he has had in his coaching career. In just his first stint as a head coach, he has been able to infuse his attitude of positive reinforcement combined with his ability to allow players to realize their full potential. And the numbers don t lie. Prior to Skinner s arrival, the Kentucky volleyball program had not experienced a winning season in the previous five years and had not made an NCAA Tournament appearance since the 1993 season. Since that time, the Wildcats have advanced to three consecutive NCAA Tournaments for the first time in school history. Skinner led the 2006 squad to its first apperance at the national tournament for the first time since Success is a relative term in sports, Skinner said. But, when coaching and building a program, it s about improvement compared to where we started. It s about understanding what it takes to have a winning mentality and not settling for mediocrity. When Skinner arrived on the Kentucky campus on Dec. 17, 2004, as the school s sixth head coach, he quickly returned an attitude of confidence to the team. He was determined that the program s timeline for success was immediate and he didn t disappoint. In just one season in the Bluegrass, Skinner returned the Wildcats to national prominence with a record and their first appearance in the NCAA Tournament. For the team s accomplishments and quick turnaround, Skinner was named the 2005 Southeastern Conference Coach of the Year. In 2006, it was a lesson in perseverance for Skinner s Cats, who overcame several obstacles to advance to their second consecutive postseason appearance. Kentucky posted a record its most wins since the 1993 campaign and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament after toppling No. 20 Ohio in the opening round. The Wildcats took perennial power Florida to five games for the first time since 1988 and knocked off No. 18 Tennessee in Lexington. The win over the Lady Vols was significant as it marked the first time UK toppled a ranked foe in 66 attempts dating back to Sept. 24, The most important thing is to keep having success and showing a brand of volleyball that s exciting, energetic and dynamic to watch, Skinner said. Our players, ever since the end of last year, have been more motivated than ever and this group really has cemented our foundation for the long-term success of this program. Skinner in his third season then achieved something no other UK volleyball coach had ever done- he led his team to a third consecutive NCAA apperance after another improved season. The Wildcats went 22-10, while posting the most SEC victories (13) and wins on the road (9) in school history. Kentucky toppled another ranked opponent in #18 LSU on national television in Lexington on their way to a fourth place overall finish in the conference. In three seasons, Skinner has led a team to three consecutive seasons of 17 or more wins with an improvement in each season. The Wildcat fans have watched an exciting brand of volleyball that has drawn the second-best crowds in the conference at Memorial Coliseum. Skinner has also led an impressive youth movement to Lexington, as firstyear players have garnered seven SEC Freshman Player of the Week awards, more than any other school. Kentucky has also posted three consecutive top-26 recruiting classes under Skinner s direction.
