THIS WEEK FOR THE BRONCOS Boise State opens the season at home by hosting the Northwest Challenge in Bronco Gym. The Broncos will have three matches during the Challenge starting with the Gonzaga Bulldogs at 5 p.m. on Friday to open the tournament. Boise State will also face Portland State the defending Big Sky Conference champions at 10 a.m. Saturday, followed by defending Pacific-12 Conference champion Washington at 5 p.m. The Washington Huskies enter the season ranked fourth nationally by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA). THE NORTHWEST CHALLENGE The seventh annual Northwest Challenge is a round robin tournament which features the same four teams annually in Boise State (Mountain West Conference), Gonzaga (West Coast Conference), Portland State (Big Sky Conference) and Washington (Pacific-12 Conference). The four schools take turns hosting the tournament on a four-year rotation. Portland State hosted the competition in Last year the Broncos went 1-2 with its lone victory coming over Gonzaga. Washington won the championship going undefeated. Boise State is 7-11 all-time in the Northwest Challenge: 4-2 vs. Gonzaga, 3-3 vs. Portland State and 0-6 vs. Washington. ABOUT THE OPPOSITION Gonzaga Bulldogs (0-0, 0-0 WCC) Gonzaga went overall in 2013 and 7-11 in WCC play, its best record in many years. The WCC coaches picked the Bulldogs to place eight out of 10 teams in this year s league race. Boise State leads the all-time series with Gonzaga by a 18-9 count and is 4-2 against the Bulldogs in Northwest Challenge matches. The Broncos have won four straight over the Bulldogs. Portland State Vikings (0-0, 0-0 BSC) Portland State has been a power in the Big Sky since it joined the league in The Vikings have won four titles since 2007 and are two-time defending regular season champions. Last year the Vikings went overall and 17-3 (first) in conference play, they just missed the NCAA Tournament losing to Idaho State in the Big Sky Tournament championship match. The BSC coaches selected the Vikings, who return two starters, the libero and seven letterwinners, to place sixth out of 12 teams in this year s league race. Portland State leads the all-time series with the Broncos by a 17-4 margin. However, the Broncos are 3-3 against the Vikings in Northwest Challenge play. The Vikings have won two straight over Boise State. Washington Huskies (0-0, 0-0 Pac-12) Washington enters the Northwest Challenge ranked fourth nationally, the Huskies were also picked to place third in this year s Pac-12 race. They return the reigning NCAA Player of the Year in senior Krista Vansant, six starters and eight letterwinners from last year s team. Washington went 30-3 overall and 18-2 (first) in league last season, as well as advanced to the NCAA semifinals at Seattle where they lost in straight sets to No. 2 Penn State. Washington leads the all-time series 10-5, including 6-0 against the Broncos in the Northwest Challenge. Boise State actually dominated the early years of the series winning the first five meetings, but the Broncos have lost 10 straight to the Huskies dating back to Aug. 27, Boise State Volleyball

3 BRONCO Notebook: Team Notes BRONCO NOTEBOOK: Preseason Notes BRONCOS IN SEASON OPENERS Boise State is in season openers since the 1979 campaign. The previous two seasons saw the Broncos open against Washington, which was ranked fifth nationally each year, resulting in two losses. The Broncos are looking to snap a six-match losing streak in openers. Boise State s last victory in a season opener came at home in 2007 when the Broncos defeated UT San Antonio in straight sets during the Bronco Invitational. The Broncos are 9-4 all-time when opening at home. MOUNTAIN WEST PRESEASON POLL The conference coaches picked Boise State to finish sixth out of 11 teams in this year s MW race, two spots better than their eighth-place finish in BOISE STATE S CONFERENCE AFFILIATION This is Boise State s fourth year as a member of the Mountain West Conference. The Broncos are in MW play since joining the league for the 2011 season. Last year the teams played a complete double round robin where they played everyone twice in the season for 20 conference matches. In 2014 the coaches voted for an 18 match conference season where they play eight schools twice and the other two once each. Boise State s 2014 single-match opponents are San Diego State (home) and UNLV (away). The MW does not sponsor a postseason tournament, choosing instead to send its regular-season champion to the NCAA Tournament. BRONCO SCHEDULE The Broncos have a tough nonconference schedule this year facing two teams that finsihed ranked in the AVCA top-12 nationally in Washington (#5) and Missouri (#12). Of the 22 teams Boise State will face in 2014, five finished in last year s RPI top-50 in No. 3 Washington, No. 5 Missouri, No. 23 Colorado State, No. 37 Tulsa and No. 46 Central Arkansas; 10 finished in the top 100, while 16 were in the top 150. The Broncos were 146 in the final RPI released by the NCAA. Four of the 12 nonconference opponents won their league s regular season title, Washington (Pac-12), Missouri (SEC), Portland State (Big Sky) and Central Arkansas (Southland), three others finished in the top three of the league. Four Boise State opponents advanced to the 2013 NCAA Championship Tournament in Washington, Missouri, Central Arkansas and Colorado State, with Washington reaching the national semifinals. HEAD COACH Shawn Garus is in his sixth season in charge of the Broncos where (.487) to go with a career record (.489) in 13 seasons. ROSTER NOTES What s Back: Boise State returns eight letterwinners, all of which started a minimum of 11 matches in 2013, and two redshirt freshman from last season s squad. Returning Starters: The Broncos also return four starters (all seniors) and the libero. The starters back are: Aly Duffin (middle blocker), Alyssa Gammel (outside hitter), Taylor Murphey (outside hitter) and Brittany Reardon (middle blocker). The libero back is sophomore Hannah Hubbard. Other Key Returners: There are also three other key veterans back that started at least 11 matches each, junior Sarah Baugh (setter), redshirt-junior Katelyn Kinghorn (outside hitter) and sophomore Maddy O Donnell (middle blocker). W1 L1 What s New: The Broncos added four new faces to the roster, one transfer and three true freshmen. The transfer is Erienne Barry (R-Fr., S), while the three freshmen are Jaymee-Lee Bulda (Fr., S), Sierra Nobley (Fr., OH) and Maddi Osburn (Fr., L/DS). OFFENSIVE NOTES Offensively: The Broncos return 78 percent of its kills from last fall including six of its top seven leaders in kills. What s Back: Boise State returns its top kills leader in Alyssa Gammel who recorded 286 for a 2.95 kills per set average (14th MW). Taylor Murphey was third on the team with 263 (2.37 kps) followed by Brittany Reardon in fourth with 198 (1.94 kps). The Serve: Boise State lost its top server from 2013 in then-senior Casey Rose who had 34 service aces. However, sophomore Hannah Hubbard returns after ranking second on the team with 25 for a 0.22 per set average (13th MW), followed by Sarah Baugh with 18 and Alyssa Gammel with 16. Assists: The Broncos return junior Sarah Baugh at setter a season after she finished with 630 assists, one behind then-senior Casey Rose with 631. Hitting Percentage: Boise State returns the school record holder for career hitting percentage in Brittany Reardon who has hit.348 during her first three seasons. She set the school single season record last year hitting 37.8 percent (3rd MW/35th NCAA), followed closely by Aly Duffin who hit a second-best 37.5 percent (4th MW). Maddy O Donnell, a freshman last year, actually hit 40.2 percent on the year to lead the conference, but fell just short of the minimum attempts to be ranked in the school record book. DEFENSIVE NOTES Blocks: Boise State returns 71 percent of its blocks from last season including its top five blockers. Block Leaders: Brittany Reardon led the team in 2013 with 87 blocks to average 0.85 per set. Aly Duffin was second in blocks with 64 (0.81 bps) followed by Taylor Murphey with 59 (0.53 kps) and Katelyn Kinghorn with 46 (0.42 kps). Digs: The Broncos return 68 percent of their digs including three of its top five players. Dig Leaders: Libero Hannah Hubbard led the team in 2013 with 428, the sixth-best season ever at Boise State, for a 3.82 per set average (6th MW). Alyssa Gammel was second with 241 (2.48 dps). PLAYER NOTES ALYSSA GAMMEL Top offensive returner from 2013 ranked first in kills on the team with 286, was 14th in the MW for kills per set at 2.95 kps. Enters season ranked second in the MW for career double-doubles with 24. Since transferring from Virginia Tech after freshman season, she has started in 58 matches for Boise State over the past two years as an outside hitter. Career Rankings: Total kills 685 (7th rally scoring era), 3.22 kills per set (third all-time, second in rally scoring era), 528 digs (12th in rally scoring era), 768 points (eighth all-time), 3.61 points per set (second all-time). Season Rankings: 399 kills in 2012 (ninth all-time, fourth in rally scoring era), kills per set of 3.44 in 2012 (16th all-time, fourth in rally scoring era), points 450 in 2012 (fourth all-time) and 3.88 kills per set in 2012 (sixth all-time). Sarah Baugh Has played in 62 matches to date at setter with 21 starts. Recorded a team second-best 630 assists in 2013 for a 5.68 per set average, season high was 44 against UNLV (Oct. 24). Ranked second on the team in total sets over the last two seasons with 1,216. Career Rankings: 12th all-time at Boise State for career assists with 1,216 and sixth during the rally scoring era... ranked 10th all-time in career assists per set average at 5.38 and fifth during rally scoring era. Has played in 35 matches to date at middle blocker with 22 starts, started 20-of-25 matches as a junior. Season Rankings: 2013 hitting percentage of 37.5 percent ranks as second-best single-season mark all-time at Boise State percent which ranks seventh during rally scoring era, eighth in block assists for rally scoring era with 145, 11th in total blocks and eighth in blocks per set. Season Rankings: Ranks 18th in total kills during the 2013 season with 263, 2013 hitting percentage of 24.5 ranks 16th in rally scoring era, while the 2012 percentage of 23.4 percent is 19th total blocks during 2012 ranks 16th during rally scoring era. Hannah Hubbard As true freshman played the entire 2013 campaign as the libero. On the year ranked sixth in the MW for digs per set at Second on team in 2013 for service aces with 24 on the year. Led the team or tied for lead in digs during 25 of 29 matches. Season Rankings: Has a team-high 428 digs to rank sixth all-time for a season at Boise State and sixth during the rally scoring era (2001-present). Career Rankings: Tied for 13th in career assists (100) and 14th in digs (428) during the rally scoring era at Boise State. Katelyn Kinghorn After redshirting as a true freshman has played in 54 matches since with 22 starts at outside hitter. Has accumulated 218 kills (1.37 kps), hitting percentage of 16.9 percent, seven assists (0.04 aps), 1 service aces (0.01 saps), 97 digs (0.61 dps), 63 blocks (0.40 bps) and 253 points (1.59 pps). Taylor Murphey Has played in 81 matches during her career with 31 starts at outside hitter. Has tallied a combined 494 kills (1.89 kps), a hitting percentage of.224, seven assists (0.03 aps), one service aces (0.01 saps), 108 digs (0.41 dps), 148 blocks (0.57 bps) and points (2.18 pps). Career Rankings: 13th during rally scoring era for total kills with 494 and 11th in kills per set at 1.89, 17th all-time in hitting percentage at Brittany Reardon Ranked third in MW and 36th nationally for hitting percentage on the year at 37.8 percent. Three-year starter, has started in 80 of the 85 matches played to date at middle blocker. Has accumulated 557 kills (1.88 kps), hitting percentage of 34.8 percent, four assists (0.01 aps), nine service aces (0.03 saps), 32 digs (0.11 dps), 255 blocks (0.86 bps) and 705 points (2.38 pps). Maddy O Donnell Competed in 24 matches as a true freshman in 2013 indoor season with 12 starts at middle blocker. In 2013 tallied 104 kills (1.82 kps), a hitting percentage of.402, two assists (0.04 aps), five service aces (0.09 saps), 20 digs (0.35 dps), 45 blocks (0.79 bps) and points (2.33 pps). 6 BRONCO Notebook: Media Information Media Policies The Boise State Sports Information Department welcomes your interest in Bronco volleyball and we will make every effort to assist your coverage of our team. The Sports Information office maintains information on all current student-athletes and coaches, as well as historical information on previous athletes and staff members. If you need any information about the Boise State volleyball program, please contact Assistant Sports Information Director Doug Link at: Office Phone: (208) Cell Phone: (208) Press Row Phone: (208) CREDENTIALS Media credentials for Boise State volleyball matches can be obtained by contacting Doug Link in the Sports Information Office. Credentials may be picked up at the door on the day of the match, one hour before the start time of the match. DIRECTIONS TO BRONCO GYM Bronco Gymnasium is located on the east side of campus next to Taco Bell Arena. The main entrance and media will call entrance is located at the Bronco Circle (south) entrance to the gym facing DeChevrieux Field. PARKING With the high volume of events that take place on Boise State s campus, parking options may vary on a match by match basis. It is highly suggested that you contact Doug Link in the Sports Information Office 1-2 days in advance of the match you are attending to find out where media parking is allowed for that contest. On a typical match day parking is usually available in Albertsons Stadium Parking Lot between the stadium and Taco Bell Arena/Bronco Gym on a first come, first served basis. PRESS SERVICES There are no hard wire phone lines or internet lines in Bronco Gym. It you need one contact Doug Link at least two weeks in advance to request one. Wireless internet is available at no charge in the gym. Radio lines will be installed only upon special request. Radio lines must be requested at least two weeks prior to the desired match. Media members may access the most up-to-date information on the Boise State volleyball team on the athletic department s official Web site: Game notes, official statistics, game recaps, box scores and general releases will be updated regularly. All of this information is available online. Non-Game Day INTERVIEWS All student-athlete and coach interviews must be arranged through the Sports Information Office by calling or ing Doug Link at least 24 hours in advance. The Sports Information Office will arrange an interview time that is mutually convenient for both the player and the media representative. Players home and cell phone numbers will not be given out. Generally, players are also available for interviews one-half hour before practice in Bronco Gym. Practice times may vary depending on class schedules, so contact Doug Link to check on player availability. POST-GAME interview PROCEDURE Following a five-minute cooling off period, requested/selected Boise State student-athletes will be available for interviews in Bronco Gym. Boise State s regular post-game procedure in the interview area is as follows: 1. Requested/selected student-athletes 2. Boise State Head Coach Shawn Garus Interviews with the opposing team must be made through their media representative. Opposing teams may make their student-athletes available inside Bronco Gym or adjacent lobbies. 8 BRONCO Notebook: Head Coach Bio Shawn Garus Position... Head Coach Years at Boise State Sixth Years Coaching th Alma Mater.... Cal State San Bernardino, 1995 PREVIOUS COACHING EXPERIENCE Garus holds a strong coaching background. Prior to Boise State he was the head coach at the University of North Carolina - Greensboro for four seasons ( ). There he recorded three-straight winning seasons with 20 or more victories while also leading his team to the Southern Conference (SoCon) finals twice. The 2008 season was his most successful, turning in a record while also producing a record in 2007 and a record in He turned UNCG from a team which was 0-16 in conference play in 2004 to a team that was 14-4 in He also produced five SoCon All-Conference players and 13 SoCon All-Academic honorees in his four-year tenure. Indoor Volleyball Record At Boise State: (.487) in five seasons Career: (.489) in 13 seasons Sand Volleyball Record At Boise State: 4-7 (.367) in One season Career: Same BOISE STATE TENURE (2009-present) The year marks Shawn Garus sixth season at the helm of Boise State s indoor volleyball program holding a (.487) record over his first five seasons with the Broncos. In addition, Garus helped usher in the newest sport to the Bronco family as head coach of the sand volleyball program which began in the spring of During the program s first campaign Garus led them to a 4-7 record surpassing most expectations for the first year program. BOISE STATE INDOOR TENURE (2009-present) Garus inherited a program that was struggling and had only one winning season in the previous 10 years. Since arriving on campus Garus has won more matches than any of his five predecessors. After producing an 8-22 record in his first season, Garus guided Boise State to three consecutive winning seasons from , a first since the 1992 season. Since Garus arrival in Boise, he has led the program through a series of challenges including a move from the Western Athletic Conference into the Mountain West Conference in In 2010, the last season in the WAC, Garus coached Boise State to one of its best seasons in the past two decades as the team went 21-12, the most wins in a season since 1990 (21 years). His team also earned an 8-8 Western Athletic Conference record, the Broncos top mark in 10 years of membership and best conference record since In addition, his team won 11 matches that ended in a 3-0 sweep, the most in a season since In 2011 he lead the Broncos into their first campaign as members of the Mountain West Conference going overall and 6-8 in league action to tie for fifthplace. Along the way the Broncos nearly upset No. 22 Oklahoma on the road and recorded three sweeps in conference action over Wyoming, Air Force and UNLV. The 2012 campaign marked the second season in the MW and saw the Broncos battle hard throughout, including a four-set upset of eventual conference co-champion San Diego State in Boise. The blue and orange finished the year to record the program s third straight winning season, while going 8-8 in league play to tie for fifth. The Broncos were dominating at home going 10-3 in Bronco Gym with two of the losses coming in five-sets. The team set a new school record for assists in a season with 1,565 and tallied the sixth-most kills (1,652) in program history. The campaign was capped off when senior outside hitter Liz Harden was named honorablemention All-American saw the Broncos go overall and 8-12 in conference play to place eighth out of 11 teams in the newly expanded league. Boise State recorded sweeps over conference members San Jose State and Nevada. The team recorded the eighth most assists all-time with 1,415. During the rally scoring era the Broncos set a new school record for hitting percentage at 23.4 percent, which ranked second in the MW on the year, and recorded the fifth most kills with 1,495. BOISE STATE HIGHLIGHTS Since Garus joined the Bronco program on June 30, His Boise State coaching highlights are numerous and include: three-consecutive winning seasons ( ), eight all-conference honors (three first team, five second team), one AVCA All-West Region and one honorable-mention All-American honoree, one Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-District Team award winner, one conference all-freshman team member and 29 academic allconference honors. BOISE STATE SAND TENURE (2013-present) Garus helped usher in a new era as Boise State added sand volleyball for the spring 2014 season. During the Bronco s inaugural campaign Garus team surpassed many of the expectations for the first-year program going 4-7 overall, including 3-2 wins over Pacific-12 Conference members Oregon and Washington in Portland, Ore. The program s first victory did not take long to get as the Broncos defeated Cal Poly 3-2 in its second match overall on April 4, 2014 at the Sacramento State Invitational. The second victory came two days later over Sacramento State also by a 3-2 score. Though Garus has played as a professional beach volleyball player, 2014 marked his first season as the head coach of a collegiate sand volleyball program. Garus has a solid background in the sand (beach) game as a member of the Association of Volleyball Professionals (AVP) and competing off and on for 12 years ( ) in the association s Pro Beach Volleyball Tour in tournaments such as the Huntington Beach and Manhattan Beach Opens, to name a few. Shawn (Garus) is an amazing player and will be a huge asset to growing the beach game in Idaho, said Jake Gibb a two-time U.S.A. Olympic beach volleyball player and member of the 2012 No. 1 ranked FIVB tour team. What a great opportunity for all involved. Exciting times!! Before UNCG, Garus served as the top assistant coach at the University of San Francisco during the 2003 and 2004 seasons helping the team to a record. In 2003 the Dons went 23-8 and Garus helped lead the team to their first ever NCAA tournament appearance and acquire their first ever national ranking (No. 24). Garus also spent time with the Texas Tech University coaching staff in 2002 as an assistant helping the Red Raiders to a record. His first collegiate head coaching experience came in 1998 when he was promoted from the assistant s position to the head job at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs where he remained from 1998 to During his time in Colorado Springs he led the Mountain Lions to their best record in school history with a 22-9 mark in 2001, and first ever postseason appearance, as well as a regional ranking of No. 6. Not only was Garus the head volleyball coach, he also served as the university s compliance coordinator and transportation coordinator for 14 sports programs. During his time in Colorado Garus held a handful of club and volunteer assistant coaching positions including the head coach of Pikes Peak Volleyball Club ( ) and a two-time volunteer assistant for the women s national team at the Olympic Training Center ( ). COACHING HIGHLIGHTS In 13 seasons as a collegiate coach (head and assistant) Garus has produced include: 22 allconference (10 first team and 12 second team) honorees, six honorable mention all-conference, two AVCA All-Region, one AVCA honorable-mention All-American, six conference all-tournament team members and one conference all-freshman team honoree. Academically his student-athletes have earned one Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All- American, four Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-District honors and 43 academic all-conference awards. PERSONAL The Glendale, Calif. native, is a 1995 graduate of California State University San Bernardino where he played four years on the Coyotes men s club volleyball team ( ). He earned his bachelor s degree in business administration with a marketing specialization.
